🦋Caligo Memnon

Giant Owl Butterfly (Caligo memnon) roosting on a palm.
When I went in for my interview, the internship coordinator communicated that this was an education-based internship -- not a research opportunity. Not only is this internship focused on educating me, but it also gives me the opportunity to educate others.
One of the outreach programs provided by the museum is the Bugs on Wheels program (BOW). We travel to public libraries, schools, homeschool groups, etc. with various exotic bugs. During the program, we explain the differences between insects, arachnids, and other bugs. We also provide further information about each insect such as its native habitat, ecosystem function, and behavioral habits.

I was able to attend and assist with a BOW at a public library. Since I am not equipped to lead the program, I assisted by holding the bugs during the petting session. We allow anyone at the program to lightly pet the bugs, but in order to protect them, only museum employees are allowed to handle them.
Another educational opportunity the museum offers are Backstage Pass Tours. During these tours, guests are taken behind the scenes of the museum's operations. These tours happen at least once a week, if not more.

Since my second week, I have led the Backstage tours of the greenhouses. During these tours, I provide information on nectar and host plants and why having a diverse, native garden is essential to the ecosystem. I guide patrons through the first greenhouse and showcase exciting plants. I often highlight the Goldfish Plant, pitcher plants, and the variety of epiphytes. I ask patrons questions in order to better facilitate learning and to better understand the base knowledge they have. I adjust my tour to ensure that the information given matches the patrons' level of interest and education.
Within the first greenhouse, I also discuss plant reproduction. I explain the difference between growing from seed and propagation, and I show the stages of propagation. During this section of the tour, I often highlight our variety of Begonias, and I explain that Begonias can be propagated by any portion of the plant.

The second and third greenhouses are the rearing area for the butterfly conservatory. In these greenhouses, I showcase the variety of host plants for the different species of caterpillars. I demonstrate how we rotate our Passiflora species so that the plants have ample time to recover from being stripped by the caterpillars. I also provide information on the butterflies within the flight cages. In the second greenhouse, we hold our Zebra Longwings, the longest living butterflies species at the conservatory. Most species live a short two to three weeks; however, this species lives anywhere from six to eight months.
As my knowledge has grown, my tours have developed and improved greatly. I also believe that by giving these tours, I have grown my knowledge base and cemented the information into my long-term memory. I am excited to see how much more I have to learn in the remainder of my time at the butterfly center.
