Best Film of the Day(s): New Order

Good Joe Bell: Or, The Education of a Straight White Father. What Reinaldo Marcus Green’s film lacks in depth, it tries hard to make up for with earnestness. Mark Wahlberg plays the real-life father, who was in the process of walking across America in honor of his gay son, who committed suicide after being badly bullied in his smalltown Oregon high school, before he was accidentally hit on the road and killed in Colorado, six months into his planned two-year sojourn. The story is cut up between the present, with Joe on the road, doing terse speaking engagements (as Wahlberg plays him, the taciturn Bell isn’t much for public speaking), at local high schools and churches, and flashbacks to the past, as his son, Jadin (Reid Miller), attempts to get through his high school experience while being the subject of bullying, both in-person and via the Internet, until he reaches his breaking point. The message is certainly resonant, and Miller plays Jadin with the right amount of heartbreaking pathos, but Green’s film feels unnecessarily mechanized in order to put Joe front and center of the story (using a hallucination of Jadin at the beginning, which allows Joe to interact with him feels more than a little manipulative). Bell, with his quick temper, and impatience for anything that’s not directly to do with him, is a reasonable stand-in for exactly the type of straight white male who should be watching the film (but more than likely won’t). Wahlberg is gifted at playing this sort of character, who wants to have the full attention of everyone any point in time he chooses (“Did you hear what I said?” he asks incredulously after making an announcement and not receiving the proper praise for it). He’s a complicated dude, which the film alludes to without entirely capturing: He’s ready to fight at a moment’s notice, but shies away from directly confronting any of Jadin’s tormentors; has the good intention to take action to draw attention to the problem, but doesn't seem the least bit prepared to give a speech that really makes an impact (one detail the film does make work: His manner of saying “I love you” to his wife or sons, but only as a way of getting them to say it back to him). Connie Britton plays Lola, Jadin’s mother, a largely thankless role as the nurturer of the family, loving both her sons (Jadin’s brother Joseph is played by Maxwell Jenkins), and staying supportive no matter their father’s attitude. Near the end of his journey, as Joe begins to see the true folly of his ways, he meets a Sheriff (Gary Sinise), whose oldest son is also gay, which allows the two men to sit on the front porch of the sheriff’s house and contemplate the ways in which their lives didn’t go as expected. It’s clearly meant for the kick-ass Wahlberg audience (as Jadin says earlier in the film, they’re the actual problem), but I very much doubt they will be heading in droves to see it.

New Order: Meet the new boss, only in Michel Franco’s damning portrait of a society locked forever in cycles of oppression, revolution, and new oppression, it makes no difference who you are, what your belief system is, or whether or not you subscribe to a moral set of ethics. After an ominous opening montage of imagery largely taken from the film to come, we shortly begin at a resplendent wedding held at the city manse of a wealthy businessman for his daughter, Marianne (Naian Gonzalez Norvind), and her betrothed, Alan (Dario Yazbek Bernal). As Marianne’s mother, Pilar (Patricia Bernal) happily secrets away the envelopes carrying the new couples’ gift money in her safe, and rich and powerful families co-mingle, the distant danger of a furious revolution, lead by violent rioters raising up against the economic disparities of the city, seems at first to be light-years away. Until it isn’t. As rioters infiltrate the house, with the help of an insider, chaos reigns and bullets fly. The next morning, many people have been shot, the house has been utterly pillaged, and Marianne has been taken hostage by a rogue group of military, who snatch up wealthy-seeming refugees and hold them for ransom at an undisclosed outpost. By film’s end, Franco, working from his own screenplay, leaves no man, woman, or child unmarked. The wealthy are callous and vain, the rioters bloodthirsty and cruel, the hostage takers unbelievably greedy and horrible, and the righteous vanquished by further corruption at even higher levels of power. It’s a bit like the ending of a Coen brothers picture (Burn After Reading comes to mind), in which all loose ends are closed, and few, if any, people are any the wiser for it; only, there’s nothing the least bit arch in Franco’s thrown gauntlet: We aren’t spared the worst of it by indelible Coens’ proxies. We are all to blame, it would seem, and it has nothing to do with original sin: Our conniving, violent nature will undo any and all attempts to curb it. Insatiable avarice is our continual undoing, washing over us like the green paint the rioters hurl at passing cars and pedestrians, marking them as the enemy. In Franco’s thunderous film, nobody emerges unscathed; we’re all set on fire.

Wildfire: It’s a hoary Hollywood staple to substitute individuals as emotional stand-ins to capture the direness of historic catastrophic events, scaling everything down so we care more about the couple in star-crossed love than the war going on all around them. In Cathy Brady’s Irish drama, however, a pair of sisters are reunited after a year’s absence in the North Ireland bordertown in which they grew up, products of the uneasy peace, post-Troubles, in which everyone is meant to get along as one country, though hard feelings still abound. Kelly (Nika McGuigan) returns to the staid home of her sister, Lauren (Nora-Jane Noone), after taking off on her own the year before, and, by all appearances, living as a vagabond. Initially thrilled to have her sister back, Lauren is also still angry with her for taking off suddenly and not making any contact since. When the girls were little, their father was killed in a political bombing, and their mother might have committed suicide as a result (the car accident that killed her was, apparently, suspicious). Left to their own devices, then, they developed a fierce protective shell against any outsiders, including, it turns out Lauren’s increasingly concerned husband (Martin McCann), and longtime family friend Veronica (Joanne Crawford). The film changes gears when Lauren finally accepts Kelly again, and the two reform their partnership as intense as it was before. As the film points out, in a real sense, they are all each other truly have in the aftermath of their tragic childhood. The film clicks better into focus as well in its final act, when the sisters are reunited against all comers, and the world around them is better revealed for what it is: They represent the schism still very much a part of their community that no one else wants to see. Instead, people hang about in bars, or at work, nursing the bitternesses and hurts of the Troubles in private, and putting their public energy to getting along. Kelly, with her wildnesses and significant impulse control issues (trying to teach a young boy how to hold his breath underwater is, perhaps, not best accomplished by holding him down until he begins to panic), is at least honest with her feelings, open to her various wounds, and refusing to put the past behind them. Their mother gets referred to as “crazy” in the town’s estimation, but it’s more likely she, like her two daughters, represents the clear-eyed view of someone who refuses to live in denial.

Concrete Cowboy: Philadelphia as an open prairie has a nice vibe, and Ricky Staub’s film about a troubled teen who mother takes him from Detroit to where his father, an urban cowboy, lives in North Philly in hopes to setting the kid straight, is made with genuine care and gets solid performances from its mixture of professional and amateur actors. If this sounds like faintly damning praise, it’s only because despite its strengths, it still feels like a great set-up in search of a suitable story. Based on the real-life Fletcher Street stables (and the novel from Greg Neri), in which locals on the rough streets of the city shelter and take care of a group of horses for the sheer love of riding, the story follows the difficult maturation of Cole (Caleb McLaughlin), a decent enough kid, but searching for his place in the world, and the tough-love tactics of his dad, Harp (Idris Elba), a longtime cowboy, who hasn’t been in his son’s life in more than a decade. Cole starts out hating everything about his new situation, from Harp’s barebones lifestyle (not only are the cupboards empty, and the fridge filled with nothing but Coke and Bud Light, Harp keeps one of his horses in the living room, sharing it with his son), to being forced to muck the stalls out at the stables to earn his chance to ride, takes up with an old friend, Smush (Jharrel Jerome), a charismatic kid caught up in the drug life. Naturally, Cole’s choice comes down to which sort of life he wants to have, his father’s hardscrabble but honest approach (made more attractive when Cole develops a bond with his own horse, Boo), or Smush’s push for increased market share and more money to buy his own piece of land out West. Shot on location in North Philly, and around the city — one shot, in which Cole sits astride boo in full silhouette against a mottled purple sky, the lampposts standing in for saguaros, hits just the right note -- Staub’s film has a properly gritty texture, and the use of some of the real Fletcher cowboys adds further verisimilitude, but the story moves predictably enough, beat-by-beat, that it doesn’t hit with the potency it might have been capable of with a less predictable narrative arc.

In a year of bizarre happenings, and altered realities, TIFF has shifted its gears to a significantly paired down virtual festival. Thus, U.S. film critics are regulated to watching the international offerings from our own living room couches.

The Super Bell, and Other Classy Handbell Videos

Some handbell videos are deep and meaningful. Some videos are fun and engaging. But only certain videos about handbells are classy.

Classy Whale is a YouTube channel created by Caleb Britton, an 18 year old high school student from Pennsylvania. His videos range from vlogs about homeschooling to remixes of sounds heard while traveling on trains up and down the East Coast. Caleb first caught my attention with a video he made last May. After taking a tour of the Malmark factory, Caleb turned the adventure into a dubstep tour of the factory. I instantly fell in love with this video, partly because it's an ingenious use of footage from the Malmark factory, and partly out of jealousy that I didn't think of doing this first.

"I’ve always loved to create audio/visual content for fun, starting with a tape recorder I stole from my mom when I was six or seven" Caleb said when asked how he got into video making. His video most popular video to date is entitled "How to Annoy a Handbell Director". I remember seeing it bounce around various handbell groups online for several weeks back in October. In this one, Caleb and his sister describe the many ways ringers can unintentionally, and intentionally, annoy their directors.

Also in October, Caleb reached out to me and asked for an audio recording of "Now The Green Blade Riseth". My group Tintabulations performs the piece regularly, and he apparently had an idea for a video that involved the piece. A week later, this video appears on his channel....

"To be honest I can’t remember the exact circumstances of this video’s inception - it just sort of happened" Caleb responded when asked where this video came from. "It’s kind of based on a trend from January [2016], where people would make Siri recite an incredibly long number and then beatbox over the repeated 'zero zero zero' etc." I pride myself on being hip to many internet trends, but this was one I had not ran across. Apparently I need to step up my internet game.

A couple weeks ago Caleb again reached out to me, this time asking if I knew anyone who could play some handbell solos for him. As someone who has dabbled in vlogging and solo ringing, I told him I could help. After an evening of shooting video in my living room, Caleb edited together this video. I'm especially a fan of the absolutely awful handbell puns and insults hurled about throughout the video.

What's next for Caleb and Classy Whale? If the past in any sign, I have no frigg'n idea. But I do know it will be entertaining.

Keeping up with my Yankees centric MLB preview, I wanted to continue onward and take a long look at the trade market the Yankees may be waddling into. Over the past two seasons, the Yankees have done most of their damage via trades both as it pertains to shedding unwanted salary, clearing 40 man space (Caleb Smith and Garrett Cooper to Michael King) and making big fish splash trades like Giancarlo Stanton and James Paxton. The Yankees have opted to make deals in large part because it's cheaper but also because they are just flat out good at it. So good in fact that it was reported toward the trade deadline that teams were absolutely going to get Brian Cashman to overpay because they didn't want to be the latest team to give up something for nothing. So if Brian Cashman opts to upgrade through trades, here are some names to keep in mind as we go through the late fall/early winter*

*As an aside, no Syndergaard, no DeGrom, no Bauer, no Kluber and no Lindor. For starters, I just don't see those deals as being remotely possible so I'm not going to waste keystrokes. Beyond that? I mean WE also all know WHY those deals make sense for the Yankees would be a barrel of fun so why waste time? They'd be amazing additions to any team let alone this one.

1. SP Robbie Ray, Arizona Diamondbacks 12-8 4.34 ERA 174 innings pitched 12.13 K/9 4.34 BB/9 98 ERA-

In a very chippy and controversial post season presser, Brian Cashman stated plainly that the people they were aiming at the deadline ultimately didn't get traded. We know for a fact that one of the guys that the Yankees chased up until the deadline was Diamondbacks arm Robbie Ray. According to Jon Heyman and other NY media members, the trade fell short when the Diamondbacks asked for a FOUR player package headlined by Clint Frazier. My guess is that the Yankees and Diamondbacks are going to circle back around to one another and the winter meetings will be ripe with Ray to the Yankees rumors. Robbie Ray is not the answer if you're chasing down a stud ace starter. He's a less talent but still quite good version of James Paxton. Let's discuss the positives; Robbie Ray is a strikeout machine who was somewhat fluked by the juiced ball in 2019. His xFIP is a full point lower than his actual ERA which suggests some flukiness. He was third in the MLB in K's per 9 innings and at 234 strikeouts, would easily give the Yankees a power lefty arm they yearn for. He's under contract until 2021 and is still on the right side of 30 which matters because Severino could be the only starter on the rotation now who is around beyond next year. The downside is that giving up assets for a guy who doesn't solve your desire/hunger for a #1 starter isn't normally wise business. Severino, Tanaka, Paxton and Robbie Ray is a really good top 4 in your rotation but it's not the sort of rotation you can trumpet out vs Houston's or even on the same level as Cleveland's top 3 of Klueber, Corrasco and Bieber. Ray also has crazy walk totals and like most power pitches he tends to give up flyball contact at a relatively spooky rate. Also could dude shave his beard in time before pitchers and catches report? That shit looks like it'll take a while.

2. SP Matt Boyd, Detroit Tigers 9-12 4.56 ERA 185.1 innings pitched 11.56 K/9 2.43 BB/9 98 ERA-

Sticking with the names and faces we know of that didn't get dealt, Matthew Boyd! The Yankees apparently checked in on Boyd a few times and Detroit figured the best way to start negotiations was with Gleyber Torres. Because idiocy exists in Michigan seemingly. To his credit, Boyd decided to "reward" the Tigers down the stretch for their view on him with a 5.55 ERA and a .505 slugging percentage against. With elevated walk rates and elevated contact overall, Boyd was pretty terrible in the 2nd half. The good news is that he throws for power, is under 30, has crazy K rates and is under contract into 2023. He is worth a lot if you buy into the upside but worth a whole lot less if you take in the totality of the circumstances. he was slightly better away from Detroit and the fact that he pitched to softer contact on the road might have some pitching coach figuring it's just a desire to get out of a dead situation. It would also be fair to note that every team trading for a Tigers pitcher is going to remember how they jerked around teams on Michael Fulmer only for him to completely fall apart. Matthew Boyd is the ultimate gamble; ridiculous stuff, amazing K rate, good walk rate and a penchant for loud hits with a terrible second half to send him. My guess is Detroit would probably like to hold onto him until the trade deadline and then reconsider things.

3. RP Ken Giles, Toronto Blue Jays 1.87 ERA 23 saves 53 innings pitched 14 K/9 2.41 BB 41 ERA- 1 flat WHIP

The final name on our Trade Deadline targets from July. Apparently of the three names above, the Yankees were closest on Ken Giles as an added bullpen arm before something in the medicals spooked them. Giles had a great year in Toronto and was a quality-ish arm for Houston before falling off the map and losing his confidence, eventually getting swapped out for maligned Roberto Osuna. If Chapman opts out, it's worth noting that Giles is probably going to do around 8 to 10 mil or so through arbitration which would put him below Britton and Ottavino in the financial totem pole. The guy who runs Toronto also was in Cleveland when they drafted Clint Frazier so clearly they have a comfort there on their end. Britton can close and Giles can be your 8th inning guy.

4. SS Nick Ahmed, Arizona Diamondbacks .254/.316/.437 19 HR 82 RBI 79 runs scored 93 OPS+ 92 wRC+

The general thought process is that if Didi leaves, the Yankees will just shift Gleyber Torres to shortstop full time, put DJ at 2B and have Gio and Voit round out the infield. In that case they probably will want somebody who can rotate around at a variety of spots in the infield to keep everybody fresh aka the same role they had in mind for DJ LeMehieu when they signed him. If they want a more traditional shortstop and use DJ/Gleyber/Gio as a trio of rotating infielders (or play DJ at 1st) then Nick Ahmed might make a lot of sense as a trade option. Going back to names from the past, the Yankees have inquired on Ahmed in the past; once as a potential 2B (the role went to Neil Walker) and once as a fill in for Didi when he had TJS. Ahmed had his career best year which is still noway near Didi's peak years BUT his glove is world's away better than Didi's peak years so that's the trade off.

5. 1B Daniel Vogelbach, Seattle Mariners .208/.341/.439 30 HR 76 RBI 79 runs scored 112 OPS+ 111 wRC+

The original plan in 2019 was a Greg Bird/Luke Voit platoon gig at 1st and DH. It didn't work out that and to his credit, Voit took the job and ran with it for the first half of the year. In the 2nd half, injuries and a lack of confidence in his ability to read the zone led to Voit being off the playoff roster. He's got all of the tools to be a really good hitting 1st baseman (less about the defense said then the better) but Voit remains a "Yeah but" for the Yankees. He's too good on paper to not make the team but too question marked filled at this point to be a reliable set it and forget it starter at 1st. Daniel Vogelbach falls into a similar boat as Luke Voit; both see a lot of pitches, both hit for power, both are cost controlled and both struggled in the 2nd half down the stretch. Vogelbach isn't great shakes defensively which would give the Yankees a sketchy lefty-righty platoon with bad defense but the pop and the OBP skills are tremendous and well worth considering if Vogelbach is not considered a key part of the Mariners rebuild. The argument could/should be made that the Yankees already have a Daniel Vogelbach in waiting in Mike Ford though.

6. SP Jose Quintana, Cubs 13-9 4.56 ERA 181 innings pitched 8.0 K/9 2.4 BB/9 107 ERA-

Went over this one elsewhere. For a Yankees staff that really could use the innings, Jose Quintana would provide a reliable somewhat affordable (at 11 mil) innings eater with upside. His stuff was basically the same as usual (he K'd a bit less than usual) and figures to have some bounceback ability especially if the balls are untreated this year.

7. DH Kyle Schwarber, Cubs .250/.339/.531 38 HR 92 RBI 82 runs scored 120 OPS+ 120 wRC+

So as previously stated; if Brian Cashman wants you then chances are he'll find a way to go and get you eventually. In 2016, Cashman went toe to toe with the Cubs in an attempt to get Kyle Schwarber for Aroldis Chapman. It didn't work out and apparently they tried again for the stretch run in 2017 as well. When the Yankees lineup was being wiped out with injuries, they went out and got a DH in Edwin Encarnacion with the belief being that they could hit their way by teams with no upgrades to the rotation. It didn't quite work out in the playoffs but Encarnacion was very reliable for the Yankees last year. Could the Yankees jump on a potential Cubs soft rebuild by grabbing Schwarber and using him as an occasional outfielder but mostly full time DH who mashes lefties and provides balance at the top of the line up between the likes of Stanton, Judge and Gleyber? Schwarber is an abysmal defender who mashes and then some but cannot hit lefties for the life of it. The price would probably be high despite his warts because he's still relatively cost effective and lefty power is always in demand.

8. RP Blake Treinen, Oakland Athletics 4.91 ERA 16 saves 58.2 innings pitched 9.1 K/9 5.6 BB/9

If the Yankees have to go and find some additional bullpen arms, they might find a friend out in Oakland. Blake Treinen was superb in 2018 and despite having similar peripherals for most of 2019, the results were way worse. EVEN accounting for regression to the mean, this was a hell of a decline for Treinen who ended the year on IL. At 31 years old and likely at an elevated (by bullpen standards) cost, the Yankees could take a low risk high reward flier on Treinen.

Timeline: Post-This, but before Plus One

A/N: This story wouldn’t have seen the light of day were it not for a couple of very important people. Namely @mldrgrl, who didn’t ever let me give up on it, and @sunflowerseedsandscience and @mangokiwitropicalswirl who offer their unwavering support even when I don’t deserve it.

She loses him somewhere in the kitchen department, letting him disappear from her line of sight while she lingers, waylaid by a particularly handsome backsplash. Which they absolutely do not need, she reasons after three solid minutes of arguing with herself before finally moving on. But she’d been wanting to update the kitchen since they’d first bought the house; bullet-riddled drywall, she figures, is as good an excuse as any. And their ridiculously expensive homeowners’ policy is apparently finally going to pay off, so they may as well take advantage.

By the time Scully wanders over to the dining area to check out the table they’d picked out together online, she knows Mulder has probably given up on trying to find her. He stubbornly refuses to backtrack at IKEA, claiming it only gets him more turned around. And despite his alleged accrual of Indian Guides merit badges, the proof of which Scully has yet to see, he scoffs at conventional wilderness survival skills like staying put and waiting for help to come to him whenever he gets lost. They’d agreed in the car ahead of time to meet up at the cafe on the second floor if they got separated, so Scully starts heading that direction.

She immediately suspects ulterior motives. Mulder has once again managed to plan this outing to take place around lunchtime, and Scully assumes that his timing is calculated so that he can satiate his unaccountable love of Swedish meatballs.

Meandering through a maze of living room and bedroom furniture, Scully consciously quells the urge to quicken her pace when she finds herself walking past bunk beds and brightly colored children’s rooms, college corner desks and bins of extra-long twin bed sheets.

William would be looking at colleges this year, wouldn’t he? Studying for his SATs. Maybe courting college scouts for water polo or basketball or baseball. Or maybe he’d been an academic, in math league or on the debate team or winner of the science fair. Or maybe he’d been a thespian, or maybe he’d been a loner, or, or, or...

Next to a wall of framed mirrors, Scully closes her eyes against row upon row of her own fractured reflections and breathes deeply through her nose, trying to banish the onslaught of potential iterations of her son as quickly as they apparate. Fifteen years later and he is still every dark-haired, long-limbed boy she sees out of the corner of her eye until she dares to look twice.

William has never stopped being a residual image that appears, Turin-like, in every negative space in her meticulously constructed world. But Scully has learned to allow herself to feel the ebb and flow of both her guilt and her gratitude in these moments. Cognitive dissonance, if nothing else, at least drowns out all the other voices in her head; the ones that whisper about what she did to Mulder when she left him to wrestle with their ghosts all alone in their drafty old house, instead of what she did to William when she gave him away to a future without her, perilous and uncertain.

She cannot, however, stop herself from intentionally averting her gaze when she passes by the children’s play area just outside the IKEA cafe, where a very pregnant mother is loudly compromising with her young son for just five more minutes, and then it’s time to go. Scully squeezes her eyes shut as the woman cradles her swollen belly with one hand and digs the other into the small of her back.

Some reminders still hurt more than others.

She spots Mulder near the front of the line queued to order and is just to about to call out to him when another voice beats her to the punch.

“Mulder? Fox Mulder?”

Mulder turns to the source of the voice, a woman standing several people behind him in line, and Scully sees him quirk a smile of recognition that reaches all the way to his eyes.

She freezes, watching the interaction unfold from a distance with an almost clinically detached interest. Mulder’s social circle, she knows, has dwindled over the years to just a handful of people, mostly acquaintances. As she racks her brain to place this woman, Scully realizes with a pang of regret that she has comprised the bulk of that handful for the last decade or more. And, until recently, she had been doing her level best to leave Mulder behind.

She notices the woman’s blonde hair first, a lustrous mane that falls in golden waves around slender, tanned shoulders. Not a hint of gray, Scully discerns, biting her lip so hard it nearly bleeds.

Mulder lets the few people between them go in front of him until he and the mystery woman are standing next to one another in line. He crosses his arms as they begin to converse, and Scully flushes hotly as she takes note of a typical Mulder maneuver when he dips his head and leans into her space so that he can hear her better. At one point, the woman turns into him to allow the person behind her to go ahead, and Scully catches a glimpse of her profile. A deep dimple appears in the woman’s cheek as she laughs at something Mulder says.

The two must reach a mutual decision to just order their food together because they finally approach the same register but pay separately. They then head over to a nearby table where a bored-looking blond boy of about six or seven in a baseball uniform is sitting.

Making her way closer, Scully takes in the woman’s tall, fit figure and makeup-free face. She has a wide, easy smile, which she unabashedly flashes up at Mulder as they continue talking.

As Scully nears, she begins to hear snippets of conversation.

“-eb’s little brother is already outgrowing the toddler bed, so we’re here looking at bunk beds. The boys are really excited about the idea of bunk beds, aren’t you, Caleb?”

Caleb smiles tightly and nods, obliging his mother, and throws his small fist into his baseball glove a few more times.

Mulder bends down, muscular arms resting lightly on his bent knees, looking up into the boy’s eyes. Someplace deep within Scully’s chest starts to ache, the twinge old and familiar. Mulder has always been wonderful with children, has always given due deference to their personhood no matter their age.

It was one of those things about him that Scully had always thought would have made him a wonderful father.

“What position do you play, Caleb?” she hears Mulder ask.

Caleb’s little boy voice is swallowed by the cacophony of knives and forks clinking against plastic plates and soda machines spitting ice into cups, and Scully finds herself leaning forward slightly as she continues towards their table, straining to hear.

“-na learn how to pitch.”

Mulder nods and glances up at the boy’s mother before meeting Caleb’s eyes again.

“You know, I pitched a couple of years. I used to be good at curveballs and changeups. But you’re gonna have to practice a lot if you want to be a pitcher. You think you can do that?”

Caleb nods down at Mulder, solemn.

The woman tugs gently at the bill of her son’s baseball cap. “I can’t keep him away from the baseball diamond. And if he’s not there he wants to be at the batting cages.”

Mulder’s smile widens. “I was the same way when I was his age.”

Scully sees the woman’s eyes sweep over her partner’s frame appreciatively. “Yeah, I’m sure.”

Caleb stares at Mulder now with naked admiration. “Who’s your favorite pitcher? Mine’s Zach Britton.”

Mulder chuckles. “Britton’s pretty good. I’m a Yankees fan, myself. So I’m liking Severino these days.”

The boy wrinkles his nose. “Ewwww, the Yankees? Traitor.”

Mulder and the woman both laugh.

“Well, maybe one day…” his mother cocks her head, biting her lip as she glances between her son and Mulder, “Mulder here can show you how to throw a curveball, Caleb.”

Mulder chuffs as he rises, crossing his arms even more tightly across his broad chest as a blush creeping over his features. “I’d probably end up in the hospital if I tried to throw a curveball these days, Annie.”

“Oh, I don’t know,” Annie says, reaching a tentative hand out and wrapping it around Mulder’s right bicep. “You look like you’re in pretty good shape to me.”

Scully, done observing, quickens her pace and plasters a smile on. “Mulder,” she says, still several feet away. “Here you are.”

Mulder startles, jerking his arm from Annie’s grasp. “Scully, hey. This is, uh, you remember, right? Annie. Anne. Anne Woodward. She was, uh, she was…”

A look of dawning comprehension flits its way over Annie’s face as she gauges Mulder’s stammering reaction with Scully’s sudden appearance. Annie glances down at Mulder’s left ring finger, then Scully’s, before she brings her eyes back up to Scully’s.

Subtle, Scully thinks. “No, I don’t think I’ve had the pleasure,” she says instead, smiling wider but barely unable to unclench her teeth. The woman is even more stunning up close. Glowing jade-green eyes and full lips. Gorgeous body.

Jesus.

Scully holds her hand out. “I’m Dana-”

Annie reaches out to shake it firmly. “Agent Scully. I know. You probably don’t recognize me, but I was at Agent Mulder’s house last weekend. I’m an investigative technician with the Bureau. I was part of the team mobilized to collect evidence after the Purlieu incident last week.” She drops Scully’s hand. “Crazy stuff.”

Combing through her memory of the multitudinous faces and comings and goings of all the investigators that had torn their house apart for almost 48 hours, Scully thinks she might remember a blonde ponytail poking out of an FBI cap, gathering evidence. Scully had been in and out of their house herself during those few days, giving multiple statements to multiple agencies, appearing before a review panel.

“Right. Thanks for your help on that,” Scully says. “Agent Mulder’s house,” she emphasizes, “is quite literally a disaster, as you know, so I told him I’d help him pick out some replacement furniture. And I owe him a table.”

Mulder’s brow furrows. He starts to interject, but Scully shoots him a pointed glance. His mouth slams shut, but the confused crease in his forehead deepens.

Just then, Annie’s order number is called, then Mulder’s. Scully makes a show of looking at her watch, clearing her throat.

“Mulder, I’ll just go get the stuff from the warehouse and meet you at the car, okay? You can drop me off at my place on your way home.”

Scully turns and walks away before he has a chance to respond. She throws one last glance over her shoulder and swallows past the lump that rises in her throat as Annie beams up at Mulder. Scully nearly bumps right into the pregnant mother still arguing with her obstinate son as she stumbles towards the elevators.

As she waits for Mulder in the car, the silence humid and thick, Scully’s memory calls to mind an instance when she was quite young, perhaps ten or twelve years old, when her mother had driven her daughters to the coast after picking them up from school one afternoon. Maggie had stared out the windshield at the crashing surf until Melissa had finally asked what they were doing there. Maggie had blinked, glanced in the rearview mirror, and confessed to her daughters that she was jealous. She was jealous of the sea for the sway it held over her husband.

As a girl, Scully had been stunned, and had said as much. She was surprised at her mother’s confessing such a thing, for wasn’t envy one of the seven deadly sins?

“Oh, Dana,” her mother had explained with a sad smile, as she’d turned her gaze away from her daughter and back to the green-blue curve of the horizon, “jealousy and envy are not the same thing. Envy is when you covet something of someone else’s that doesn’t belong to you. Jealousy is longing for what’s already yours.”

It’s taken years, but in the cabin of Mulder’s pickup, waiting for him to amble outof the store, Scully finally thinks she understands the distinction.

Apart from herself, Scully knows, Mulder has led such a loveless existence. But hasn’t she also done her best, even unwittingly, to ensure that his histrionic cycle of love and loss just keeps going, ad infinitum? Maybe Mulder has come to believe that a life with Scully is what he has earned, part of his unending doomed lot in life. To be loved by a woman who was not supposed to be able to bear him any children. To be loved by a woman who was destined to give him an impossible son only to give him away.

Scully is startled out of her reverie when Mulder opens the driver’s side door and slams it behind himself. He lets the silence stretch in the cab before speaking.

“What the fuck was that, Scully?”

“You tell me,” she answers, hating how petulant she sounds.

“Scully…” Mulder’s voice is low, dangerous. He twists the keys in the ignition with a jerk of his wrist and pulls out of the parking space. “Come on. You know me better than that.”

Scully doesn't respond. Does she know better? She and Mulder hadn’t really talked about where things were headed between them after the terrorist attack at the Ziggurat in Texas. She’d started staying over at the house with him more and more since her latest hospital stay, after her bout of unexplainable seizures. Remembering the surprisingly new heft of Mulder above her, the way he used their bed frame to leverage the angle of his thrusts, his head between her legs that very morning, she certainly knew where Mulder had been hoping things were heading.

But Scully had always doubted whether Mulder’s known what’s in his own best interests, especially when it came to her.

For her part, she hates herself for needing him as much as she does. He is her fatal flaw, her Achilles heel, the forbidden fruit that has been her undoing. You’d think she’d have learned her lesson by now, but here she is, twenty-five years later, still waging war with herself over him, holding him at arm’s length with one hand while drawing him closer with the other.

Mulder has pulled onto the highway before he starts talking again. There’s a plaintiveness in his voice that Scully can’t remember hearing in years, not since they first started working together. It burns, hearing him trying to convince her of something she knows shouldn’t be plausible, but probably is.

“Annie and I got to talking when she was at the house. She saw my bat and glove in the corner and asked if I was coaching Little League or something.”

Annie.

Annie is tangible. Attainable. And obviously more than willing. She could probably still give Mulder another child, a little sister for her two boys.

Scully refuses to respond, allows the silence to unspool, become uncomfortable. Mulder struggles to fill the void, like he always does.

“I just, I told her I liked baseball, and we got to talking about Caleb, and how-”

“Mulder, I think this was a mistake.”

Mulder quiets. He stares at her profile. “Okay, fine. We’ll go to Pottery Barn.”

“That’s not what I meant and you know it.”

Scully looks out the windshield. She can feel the phantom pressure of Mulder’s jaw clenching and unclenching.

“I think,” she begins, glancing at him and pressing on when Mulder closes his eyes, “I think we may be rushing back into this for the wrong reasons.”

“No, Scully.”

“No?” she asks, turning fully in her seat to look at him, incredulous. “No? When have we not been the worst possible option for one another?”

“Scully, where is this coming from?!” Mulder practically shouts at her. “Are you PMSing or something?”

“I’m perimenopausal, Mulder,” she retorts, “and maybe it’s time you started thinking about why we’re even together in the first place. And why we keep continuing to be together when it brings us nothing but heartache.”

Mulder lets another half a mile pass before he speaks again, and the gravel in his voice scrapes her heart raw.

“Are you really that unhappy with me?” he asks quietly, taking the turnoff towards her place.

“Are you really that happy when we’re together?” Scully asks. “Or are you just less miserable because you’re not all alone by yourself?”

“That doesn’t even make sense, Scully!” Mulder yells, slapping a hand against the steering wheel.

“Could you just stop being stubborn for a moment, Mulder,” Scully implores. “Just divorce yourself completely from the idea of you and me and think about it. Could you be happy with someone like Annie? Raising a family, having little boys to play catch with, someone to teach how to throw a curveball? A wife who actually stands a chance of getting pregnant again?”

Her heart feels like it’s withering in her chest, atrophied after so long without him and weary from trying so hard to hold on to what it was about him that made him so irreplaceable. But this is where she’s always failed where he has succeeded: Mulder has a knack for loving the memory of someone unconditionally, in spite of the many ways they’ve let him down.

He pulls up to the sterile, ridiculously overpriced townhouse that she’s insisted on maintaining since she moved out. It’s in a gentrified part of D.C., an industrial park that’s been modernized, and she knows Mulder hates it, even though he’s never said a thing about it. He slams on the brakes so hard that she winces when they screech. Mulder throws the car in park and stares out the windshield, refusing to look at her.

“I know the difference between losing people and watching them leave, Scully.”

Scully stares at his profile. The strong line of his jaw has softened over the years, but it’s no less dear to her now than it was decades ago, shadowed by 5 o’clock stubble and the sherbet-colored light filtering in from the streetlamps half a block away.

“I’ll see you tomorrow, Mulder,” she whispers, and she’s out of the passenger seat, slamming the door of the truck and turning the lock of her own place in less than thirty seconds without sparing a second glance behind her.

He’s been watching her leave for years, she figures, as the automated front door beeps shut behind her. She leans into it, inviting the small measure of pain when she lets her skull thud against the hard wood. The sound of his truck idling lingers until he finally puts the car in reverse and crunches back down the driveway, giving her the space he knows she needs.

One more night won’t kill them.

New York Yankees-Minnesota Twins Series Preview

6.7.22- Jameson Taillon RHP (6-1) 2.30 ERA Vs. Cole Sands RHP (0-1) 7.88 ERA

6.8.22-Nestor Cortes LHP (5-1) 1.50 ERA Vs. Chris Archer RHP (0-2) 3.89 ERA

6.9.22-Gerrit Cole RHP (5-1) 2.78 ERA Vs. Dylan Bundy RHP (3-3) 5.57 ERA

The Yankees At A Glance- The Yankees are the best team in baseball and have had a great first two-plus months. They are (39-15) and have won ten of their past twelve games. Aaron Judge is having one of his best seasons in a contract year. He is hitting .313 with twenty-one homers and forty-one RBI’s on the year. The Yankees and him didn’t come close on a contract extension and he’s proving them wrong. The Yankees have hit eighty homers in fifty-four games. Gleyber Torres is playing better at his natural position of second base. Josh Donaldson is off to a slow start with his new team. He is hitting just .229 with five homers in the Bronx. Ben Rortvedt suffered a meniscus tear in his knee and will miss a decent amount of time. Aaron Hicks is hitting just .213 on the season. Miguel Andujar has requested a trade after being sent down to AAA. The pitching staff has been one of the best in baseball. The starting staff has a 2.55 ERA, which is best in MLB. Nestor Cortes might start the All-Star Game for the American League. He has struck out sixty-eight over sixty innings with a 1.50 ERA. Jameson Taillon has been good and it’s scary when Gerrit Cole is your third-best starter. Aroldis Chapman is out with an Achilles injury and Clay Holmes is the closer for now. He has locked down eight saves and allowed just one runs in 26 2/3 innings. Clarke Schmidt and Wandy Peralta have been good surprises out of the bullpen. Chad Green and Zack Britton are out with elbow injuries. Green is having Tommy John and will miss the rest of the season.

The Twins At A Glance- The Minnesota Twins won their second series against a good team this year when they took two out of three from the Blue Jays. They have beat the Rays and Jays on the road. The team returns home for a much-needed Monday off day. Max Kepler, Emilio Pagan, Caleb Thielbar, and Trevor Megill have been activated from the restricted list. Jharel Cotton, Ian Hamilton, and Mark Contreras were returned to St. Paul. Bailey Ober has that groin injury and will miss Tuesday’s start. Cole Sands will likely get the start in his absence. Joe Ryan might need a rehab start this week before returning from Covid. Carlos Correa could come back by the middle of the week. Kyle Garlick has been dealing with a nagging hamstring injury. Jorge Alcala is hitting the upper-90′s with his fastball during a rehab assignment in Fort Myers. I feel like I’m covering the injury report for an NFL team lately. Luis Arraez leads baseball with a .358 average. Over the past couple of weeks, Alex Kirilloff is hitting .438 with five homers and thirteen RBI with the Saints. Jhoan Duran has thrown 12 2/3 scoreless innings in a row.

What To Watch For- The Yankees won six of the seven meetings against the Twins in 2021. The Twins have not won a season series against the Yankees since 2001 in Tom Kelly’s last season. They split six games in 2005 and 2006, but never won a season series. The Yankees have gone (116-47) against the Twins since 2000. Jameson Taillon is (2-1) with a 4.32 ERA in three games against the Twins. Nestor Cortes is (2-0) with a 2.92 ERA in three games versus the Twins. Chris Archer is (6-7) with a 3.08 ERA in nineteen starts against the Yankees. Josh Donaldson has three homers off Chris Archer. Gerrit Cole has allowed two runs in nineteen innings against the Twins. Dylan Bundy is (2-6) with a 6.42 ERA in fifteen games against New York. Aaron Judge has homered off Bundy three times. The Blue Jays and Rays were a minor test, but the Twins have failed by getting swept by the Dodgers and Astros this year. They get a huge test this week against the Yankees with a short-handed roster.

Spring Semester Honor Roll Announced

Jackson, Tenn (June 21, 2017) – The Office of Admissions and Records at Jackson State Community College released the honor roll for the Spring 2017 semester. On the honor roll, there were 307 full-time students who achieved a quality point average over 3.00. There were 381 students who made the dean’s list by achieving a quality point average of 3.50 or better.

Honor Roll is reserved for students who are enrolled for twelve (12) or more hours of college-level work (Learning Support excluded) and who complete a semester’s work with a quality point average between 3.00 and 3.49.

Dean’s List is reserved for students who are enrolled for twelve (12) or more hours of college-level work and who complete a semester’s work with a quality point average between 3.50 and 4.00.

Joey’s Yankees Trade Deadline

In 2016, the Yankees used the trade deadline to try and play two different games at once. Realizing that the magic had run out and four to five years of delaying the inevitable was over; the Yanks traded Aroldis Chapman, Carlos Beltran and Andrew Miller to kick off what could've been a lengthy rebuild. Those three trades on their own restocked the farm system with premier top level talent with some lottery tickets thrown in that have paid dividends to this day. At the same time, a move here and a move provided them with some proven MLB players who allowed the team to flirt with being contenders down the stretch. It was a balancing act between rebuilding and placating your audience, one that ultimately paid off across the board. Watch this:

Aroldis Chapman turned into Gleyber Torres, Adam Warren and Billy McKinnie (more on him later).

Andrew Miller turned into Clint Frazier, Justus Sheffield (who has since turned into James Paxton) and some spare parts.

Carlos Beltran turned into Dillon Tate (more about him later), Erik Swanson (another player who turned into James Paxton) and Nick Green

In 2017, the Yankees were in the midst of a "restocking" of the shelves. The rebuild took less than a season and the team rode a trio of young stars (Aaron Judge, Didi Gregorious and Gary Sanchez) with a loaded farm system to back them up. They gambled on their window and made moves to try and take what was a fun potential playoff team into a full blown world series contender. The Yankees sent a bundle of high upside low floor prospects to Chicago in exchange for Todd Frazier, Tommy Kahnle and David Robertson. They made a filler move for Jaime Garcia to give them some support on the back end of the rotation. Finally they made the decision to give Oakland a balance of high upside guys and some players who could fill spots on a major league roster in exchange for the top available pitcher on the market in Sonny Gray. The team ultimately made the ALCS.

By 2018, the Yankees story of being the fun rebuild into potential contenders was done and the Evil Empire was back. They spent their off-season swooping on key names and players. They got UNDER the luxury while adding the NL MVP in Giancarlo Stanton. By this time last year, the team had seen the likes of Gleyber Torres, Miguel Andujar, Luis Severino and Aaron Hicks all break through pretty much at once. Despite this, the Yankees felt like an empty World Series contender as Gary Sanchez collapsed, the 1B situation had eroded and as always, pitching was a premium. Despite spending most of the 2018 offseason preaching their desire for pitching, the Yankees never secured the "big" starter. They gambled on Sonny Gray rebooting and it never happened. They gambled on Tanaka being more consistent and he was a mystery. Guys like Domingo German and Johnny Loiasiga were inconsistent as pitchers tend to be. Making matters even more complicated, the Yankees had an impending roster crunch. They were full up on 40 man spots with a near limitless number of players in need of spots. As such the Yankees were active deadline players. They went out and got Lance Lynn, betting on peripherals (the same Lance Lynn who could be a key contributor to another team), in hopes he'd turn into something. Remember Billy McKinnie? Well the Yankees packaged him together with Brandon Drury to grab J.A. Happ. Happ wasn't the sexiest name on the FA market but the Yankees knew him from Toronto, respected the numbers and got him for pretty much a song. Dillon Tate? He went to Baltimore for Zach Britton. They also traded the likes of Adam Warren, Chasen Shreve and Giovanni Gallegos to create some space on the 40 man. One of the guys they got back? A "he hits the ball hard" 1B named Luke Voit. Voit went on to carry the offense when the likes of Judge and Stanton were sidelined or limited with injuries. Despite all the moves, the Yankees never quite hit their peak and the team was bounced out by the eventual world champions.

The 2019 Yankees enter the trade deadline in an interesting spot. This team is going to the playoffs and will almost certainly be the presumptive favorites in the AL. Their top opposition are the Houston Astros who like them are loaded up in the farm system with a need for pitching. Both teams stack up amazingly well against one another and the winner of that is almost certainly going to face the Dodgers. The Yankees path to a championship has never been clearer and this team is already making moves for October like trading for pinch runner extraordinaire Terrence Gore just so he can hang out in their minor leagues and show up around October. They saw a chance to make a move and got the AL home run leader Edwin Encarnacion just for further oomph in an oomphy line up. So what's the plan for July 31st? Well....

What Do They Need?

-Starting pitching

All teams need pitching but for a team with World Series aspirations? The Yankees REALLY need pitching. In a five game set, the Yankees will be able to roll out Masahiro Tanaka, CC Sabathia and James Paxton. That's more than good but it could be better. The Yankees rotation are volatile, even when you simply play the "all rotations are volatile" card. Tanaka has an elbow that could go at any time, CC Sabathia has one DL stint a half and James Paxton has never been all too durable himself. Behind those two guys you have J.A. Happ who is one of those aging arms trying to recalibrate his game in the juiced ball era and Domingo German who is likely to be on an innings limit. Despite the critiques of fans and baseball folks alike, the Yankees have found success with an opener (Chad Green starts, Nestor Cortes goes 3-4 innings) and can always rely on that. Can you do that in October? The Yankees' entire deadline is based around having a player who can start game 2 or 3 in the World Series behind Tanaka and potentially Paxton.

What Do They Want?

-Some relief help

The Yankees apparently want relief help which seems odd enough until you consider that their rotation may be five and fly come October. Tommy Kahnle, Adam Ottavino, Zach Britton and Aroldis Chapman make for four arms who can give you multiple innings but they could use upgrades elsewhere. Chad Green, David Hale, Nestor Cortes and Stephen Tarpley have all given the team some additional oomph out of the bullpen but this team could really use an additional arm in the pen. In a perfect world, the team has Dellin Betances back by September or Domingo German is in the bullpen for the second half of the year but no scenario goes 100% according to plan. They could also use a lefty primarily to buddy around with Britton out of the pen.

-Controllable years

The Yankees will eventually have to pay some folks they'd rather not lose out on (Didi, Betances) plus the likes of Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez and company will need to be paid. What's more, the likes of CC Sabathia and Masahiro Tanaka potentially do not have long term futures for the Yankees. The Yankees want fiscally responsible controllable arms with years of control to be manipulated. Doesn't mean they won't go and chase down a rental but the rental approach last year ultimately cost them in the long run.

-High K rate/soft contact

This is very much a "No shit" comment but the Yankees prioritize guys who can miss bats OR initiate soft ground ball contact. The linedrive rate is a big deal for the Yankees because they ask pitchers to throw their offspeed stuff at extraordinary amount compares to the rest of the major leagues. As such any pitcher giving up hard contact and throwing a lot of fastballs in NYS is probably not going to fare well and they'd rather avoid that mess entirely.

What Do They Have?

The Yankees have traded away plenty of assets, especially guys who were in theory "ready now" pieces. The likes of Billy McKinney, Dillon Tate, Justus Sheffield and company were sent away. Guys like Chasen Shreve, Adam Warren, Caleb Smith, Giovanni Gallegos and Garrett Cooper who were on the 40 man with no future on the roster were moved out for space and intentional signing bonus money. Most of the Yankees system depth exists on the lower levels, way down in the proverbial food chain which normally doesn't doesn't entice a GM to make moves. The BEST piece for the Yankees is outfielder Clint Frazier and that piece comes with plenty of questions. Clint Frazier is a fantastic power bat with "legendary bat speed" as Brian Cashman called it. He can hit for power AND average even if he K's a bit more than you'd like which is also why the Yankees are not going to give him away. Conversely, Frazier's defense is abysmal and it hasn't gotten better in the three years he's been on the Yankees. That's not including the questions about his make up, personality and injury history. The Yankees have a potential spot open for Clint Frazier next year but I get the feeling that he's not going to be here one way or another by the start of the 2020 season. Frazier's stock on the Yankees will forever feel like a balance between raw talent and limited patience. Beyond that the Yankees have oft injured slumping OF Estevan Florial and undersized flame throwing Deivi Garcia who has been a rapidly ascending arm who is limited by his build.

What the Yankees do have is an abundance of complimentary pieces. They're loaded with the sort of guys who ultimately find ways to contribute to teams when given opportunities and bolster trades around big pieces. For instance, a guy like Stephen Tarpley can appeal to a team as a potential LOOGY 7th inning guy if given a more consistent role. Teams collect guys like Luis Cessa (hard throwing guys who seem to lack a defined role on a team) all the time. Mike Tauchmann is a really solid 4th outfielder who plays tremendous defense, hits lefties well despite being a lefty and seems like the sort of guy teams are always looking for because . Flexy infleidler types like Tyler Wade and Thairo Estrada might be able to flourish in a more patient role and in the case of Estrada, there's high level upside for a guy who mashed pretty hard during his brief stint in the bigs. Even guys like Mike Ford, Chance Adams, Nestor Cortes and Ryan McBroom might find ways to become consistent contributors on other teams where they're not blocked by elite players. None of these guys can headline a package for a key piece but they can help amplify a deal and give teams a more instant reward while waiting for the "name" players of a trade to pan out. All a team has to do is look at how the likes of Miami and Toronto are getting some returns on talent the Yankees have given out.

The Best Case Scenario Is....

Easy enough for the Yankees, the best case scenario involves a starting pitcher arriving on their doorstep before the weekend ends. The Yankees tend to get help before the deadline crunch and with their lineup pretty much set across the board, their sole focus is on arms. A perfect scenario involves somebody like a Matthew Boyd or a Luis Castillo for a relatively modest price (can the Yankees convince a team that gambling on the upside of Florial plus some proven pieces can be a worthwhile starter point?) to give them not just an ace but a cost controlled ace under team control for a few years. The back up to the best case scenario pretty much revolves around two guys; Marcus Stroman and Robbie Ray. Both are guys a tier below the likes of Boyd, Minor and Castillo on paper with a more measured upside. Stroman in particular feels like a guy who the Yankees would more than love; still kinda young, a workhorse who is mentally tough, the sort of guy who would thrive in the spotlight who seems like he wants the opportunity to dos so. After getting their starter, the Yanks grab a lefty arm for the pen and do so without giving up Clint Frazier or Deivi Garcia.

The Worst Case Scenario Is...

There are two worst case scenarios and both feel uncomfortably realistic. The Yankees overpay out the wazoo for a guy like Trevor Bauer, Noah Syndergaard or Mike Minor; gambling big on their window being now and running the risk of overpaying for pitchers with a high level of bust potential. The Yankees go all in and give up a bunch to get one of the premier names who don't exactly fit what the long term profile of the Yankees is. The other worst case scenario is that there's NOBODY of consequence available and the Yankees are forced to accept the declining returns of a Madison Bumgarner. MadBum is an October baseball legend but he's aging with so-so peripherals who embodies the sort of rental the Yankees should aim to avoid. You're also going to wind up paying a sentimentality tax to San Francisco which when combined with the famed Yankee tax creates a ridiculous price point for this team. I also would imagine that the Yankees would cringe heavily and perish the thought of Zack Wheeler, Tanner Roark or Mike Leake as fallback options should every other key option be off the market.

One thing to remember....

The Boston Red Sox won the World Series last year with their starters averaging JUST over 5 innings a start. It's not a replica for success you want to copy but worst case scenario, there's no reason the Yankees couldn't go Tanaka-Sabathia-Paxton and some combination of Happ or German. It's not an ideal starting formula but it's also far from impossible. The Yankees could even bet on Luis Severino and German to piggyback off one another as long men in a postseason series. This is where having an insanely deep pen (with maybe a few bodies on the way) makes the Yankees different than just about any other team in this conversation except for the Rays.
