Seeing the pellet conversations got me thinking lol. My bird eats the colorful zupreem pellets bc it’s the diet she was on when I got her but nitpicks about the colors. She just won’t eat the yellow ones. Would she do better swapped over to a colorless type or would she just not eat bc she’s used to the bright colors?
I’m sure it would spare my poor floor some suffering if she wasn’t chucking one specific pellet constantly lol.
It’ll likely take a bit of time for them to observe the new pellets as food but that’s pretty standard for every diet transition. Even going from the same colour of pellet to just a different size or shape can be enough for some birds to need the whole conversion process again to recognize it as food!
You are unlikely to get that food selective consumption happening once you switch though since the vibrant colours are gone. She’ll just be taking in the flavours and texture instead which typically means they’ll eat everything from the bag- unless there happens to be a one off weirdly overcooked pellet.
If I were to recommend a few I’ve found that the caitec oven fresh bites were extremely easy for my birds to take to. I didn’t have to do a conversion at all they just started eating it like it was cookies. Roudybush took a bit of a conversion but wasn’t too bad and Harrison’s is typically pretty quick especially if they like hot pepper bc you can use the hot pepper flavoured pellets to entice them a bit more. Their texture is pretty hard though so if she’s picky on texture they might not work!

I’ve been wanting to get Sherbie on a healthier pellet than the one she’s on (Kaytee Exact Natural - Cockatiel size). It’s not that Kaytee is bad, but I feel like there’s better. Anyhow, I was also curious to see if Rupert would like them as well, so I went with the medium size. The pictures were little on the website and there wasn’t a very clear idea of the sizing on these Caitec Oven Fresh Bites, but the reviewers said they crumbled fairly easily so I figured I could just break them if they were too big.
They arrived today. H-O-L-Y COW. In what universe is that a medium? On the bright side, they smell very nice-- a bit reminiscent of gingerbread cookies. I poured some in a bag and crushed them down to what I feel is closer to their “small” size. It is yet to be determined if Rupert likes them, but I saw several of them in his water bowl along with some Roudybush pellets, so maybe? I’ll really have to smash these things in to small particles if Sherbie is to try and eat them. I have a feeling she’ll turn her beak up at them.

Ordered both the golden obles and the caitec oven fresh bites. I couldn’t find much in depth information either way, just people spouting opinions without actually listing any facts about it. Nothing particular negative about either aside from the standard people not understanding that you need to teach birds how to eat pellets so they claim they suck for the fact that their birds won’t eat them.
Still looking in to both of them but we’ll give both a try and see if we notice any differences. Golden obles may be too large for Mia but if they’re soft enough it won’t be an issue. We’ll just have to try and see really.

What brand is the low soy pellet? I’m wondering if I should try switching Rocco to a lower soy one and seeing if that helps his plucking at all.
No soy is TOPs,
lower soy is Caitec oven fresh bites pellets

In you opinion what is the best pellet to feed with chop of course
My opinion is that everyone should feed what works best for their bird with advice from their medical team.
At the moment parrot science doesn’t have any clear answers on what food is the best for them, what precise nutrients are required, or even if each different parrot species needs the same foods.
For my own birds I feed Totally Organics Pellets as the base pellet and supplement it with some caitec oven fresh bites. Mia gets both of those plus some Harrison’s high potency hot pepper pellets for variety/ to support her aging.
Then they both get UV light, a varied chop mix, sprouts and a tiny amount of seeds.

Hi, I was scrolling your blog last night and saw you mentioning you give your elderly bird very large pellets to help them wear down their beak. My family owns a ten-year-old lovebird and we're starting to worry about the length of her beak. We've already given her access to lots of sandpaper perches to help her wear it down but that doesn't seem to be helping much. Can you please let me know what brand the large pellets are so we can try them? Thanks! (Fine to answer publicly so other people can also use the resource)
I use Caitec Oven Fresh Bites (pouches)
In the medium size!
Size comparison to my parrotlet (about an inch smaller than a lovebird)

I’ve only tried using this brand for this purpose so far, I just had them on hand so I figured I’d try it out. They’re a really nice consistency for it, crumble under the tiny beak pretty well using a decent amount of effort but not so much that she gives up on it. I love the wider shape of them as it encourages her to rotate her head and use both sides of her beak to break it apart. They also tend to have whole pieces of ingredients in it so there’s usually good texture for the little beak to grip on to to more effectively break the pellet.

What is your feeding routine with your birds?
at the moment They both get given 1 tsp of food in the morning, half Caitec Oven Fresh bites and half Totally Organics Pellets. Then Newt gets a second scoop in the evening and Mia gets more if her bowl is empty (Newt will over eat if given a free feeding option, Mia regulates her weight on her own really well). Veggies are given in the morning, about 2 tbsp are offered and they can have as much of that as they want.

since you and i feed our birds the same two pellet brands, i'm wondering — do yours also devour every last speck of the Caitec before touching the TOPs? my budgie will eat the TOPs with no hesitation if it's the only thing in the bowl, but if there is one (1) oven fresh bite in there it is her first choice every time. i'm impressed by how obsessed she is with them — just curious if your birds are the same!
Definitely! Not quite that precise about their preferences 😂 but they do show that they enjoy the caitec way more. Ingredient wise I’m not surprised, caitec is way more palatable than TOPs with TOPs being very healthy veggie, organic, nutrient dense and caitec being more grain-flour-yumminess.
Caitec is definitely a go-to for picky birds now for me, by far the easiest transition and most consistency with the birds enjoying it all the way through.

Hi,Can you tell me where do you purchase your oven fresh bites? Thanks!
I order them from feathered addictions
It looks like mysafebirdstore may sell them as well however the images look like the line I bought by accident which ended up being large pieces with some broken so I can’t say for sure that it’s exactly good for teeny tiny birds if they’re pickier about their pellet size

What do you feed your birds other than chop? Have a good day!
They get pellets as the main diet (caitec oven fresh bites and Totally Organics Pellets), seeds get hidden in toys for foraging (millet and sunflower usually, oat sprays too), and sprouts (either a bean mix or a seed mix)

Is it okay to continuously feed soaked pellets? As my bird won't have them any other way.
Yes and no, nutritionally there’s nothing wrong with that. Soaking the pellet doesn’t really remove nutrients, some water-soluble contents may lose some value though.
Behaviourally you may run in to problems as they mature and still dominantly consume what is basically baby food texture. Hormones may come in to play as it resembles regurgitation, etc.
Medically there’s a higher risk for bacterial growth in the wet food so there’d be increased odds of the bird getting sick.
I’d definitely keep trying to slowly accustom them to a firmer pellet, but for the time being there’s no major problem with them eating it soaked. The caitec oven fresh bites pellets have a really good texture, it’s more crumbly like a Christie’s cookie whereas most pellets are very rock hard. TOPs also crumbles very easily but many birds are pickier about its flavour.May be worth a shot!

Are there days that Mia and Newt enjoy eating more of their pellets than others? Or are there days that they snub up their beaks? Also have they ever had preferences in which brand of pellet they enjoy eating the most?
Not really, they’re pretty consistent with how much/ how fast they eat their pellets. Outside of normal minor fluctuations (seasonal changes, etc.) they’re always really excited for pellets and eat the same amount.
We did a small pellet test when I was switching them over to new brands. When I placed all the bowls equal distance from them the birds did have preferences. Mia dove in to the caitec oven fresh bites (which shed never seen before) and Newt I believe stuck to the Harrison’s but went for the OFB or TOPs if Harrison’s was not available (I cant recall which he went for I’d have to go find the post again).
Golden Obles they will not try. It is the only pellet I have had such immense struggle with. Even getting each of them off seeds to pellets wasn’t this hard.
In either regard whatever I put in their bowl for the day they will eat. They don’t get so picky as to completely randomly avoid certain brands they used to eat. Golden Obles is the only brand I’ve had immense defiance with.
