NIA-10 Implements "Green Tech" to Boost Farming in N. Mindanao
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - The National Irrigation Administration in Northern Mindanao (NIA-10) has taken a significant step towards sustainable farming by adopting "green technology" in four areas of the region. The initiative aims to support farmers and enhance their productivity.
Solar Pumps Installed: Saving Costs for Rice Farmers
In an interview on Thursday, NIA-10 Manager Elpidio Lucernas Jr. revealed that solar pumps have been installed this year in the towns of Balingasag and Alubijid, both located in Misamis Oriental, as well as in Lala town in Lanao del Norte and Barangay Pagalungan in Cagayan de Oro City. These solar pumps offer a major advantage to rice farmers in these areas, as they can now save at least 50 percent on their electricity bills compared to their previous billing statements from electric providers.
Additional Irrigation Projects Set for Implementation
Lucernas, who manages the Irrigation Management Office of the four provinces in Region 10, excluding Bukidnon, also announced that additional irrigation projects worth PHP20 million are scheduled for implementation before the end of this year. These projects will be carried out in the towns of Balingasag and Maranding in Lanao del Norte and Tangub City in Misamis Occidental. The aim is to further enhance irrigation facilities in these areas, providing vital support to local farmers.
Challenges in Misamis Oriental: Insufficient Irrigation Coverage
While highlighting the progress made, Lucernas emphasized that NIA-10 is committed to improving its service area in Misamis Oriental. Currently, only 18.3 percent of the land in the region is irrigated, falling short of the necessary coverage for achieving rice sufficiency and providing cheaper rice prices.
Expanding Irrigation Coverage: A Critical Step
Lucernas explained that the current irrigation rate covers approximately 2,114 hectares of farmland out of the 5,000-hectare service area, resulting in a yield of only 3,910 kilograms per hectare. To achieve rice sufficiency in Misamis Oriental, it is crucial to expand the irrigated land area. However, the process of irrigation development is still underway.
Project Implementation Speeds Up
To address these challenges, NIA-10 is expediting its project implementation, which has already reached 90 percent completion for cycle 2022. This proactive approach will help accelerate the region's progress towards achieving a more efficient and sustainable irrigation system.
Promoting a Sustainable Future for Northern Mindanao
As NIA-10 continues to prioritize the adoption of green technology and expand its irrigation projects, the prospects for enhanced farming productivity and improved rice sufficiency in Northern Mindanao are expected to grow. The sustainable initiatives undertaken by NIA-10 are not only crucial for the region's agricultural sector but also for promoting a greener and more environmentally conscious future. It was martial law, and soldiers shot and killed many young Tausug men in Jolo on mere suspicion of being rebels, [Amroussi “Cheng” Rasul, a grandson of the late Hadji Butu, the first Muslim Filipino senator] recalled. Among them, he said, was his classmate, Alfred Chang.
Rasul’s grim memory harked back to the government’s military crackdown on the historic town, as it sought to suppress the uprising of the Nur Misuari-led Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), then a new group that emerged to challenge the martial law imposed by the late strongman Ferdinand E. Marcos more than a year earlier and started the struggle for Moro independence.
Five decades later, the events of the February 4-11, 1974 siege in Jolo remain largely forgotten, and neither the local governments nor the National Commission for Muslim Filipinos (MCMF) has arranged commemorative activities for what has been dubbed the “Jolo-caust.”
The Battle of Jolo, also called The Burning of Jolo, was a significant but often overlooked event in the country’s history in that it was the strongest resistance against the martial regime of Marcos at that time, said retired judge Soliman Santos Jr. during the live-streamed “The Siege of Jolo 1974” forum at the University of the Philippines in Quezon City on Monday, February 12.
At the same time, the event signaled the beginning of a growing movement for Mindanao independence, according to Santos, author of the book The Moro Islamic Challenge: Constitutional Rethinking for the Mindanao Peace Process.
As the military fought against MNLF forces, intense battles spread throughout the city. Military ships bombarded the pier, a gas station exploded, and napalm bombs were used. After days of fighting, the military regained control, but about two-thirds of the Jolo burned to the ground and lay in ruins.
Amina Rasul, lead convenor of the Philippine Center for Islam and Democracy (PCID), said it was a “devastating blow to the fabric of Tausug and Jolo society resulting in immeasurable human suffering, economic hardships, and destruction of our political structure… and represented a very painful part of our history.”
“People in Manila think we were always poor. No, we were very well off even though we were neglected by the government,” she said.
“Because of the complete destruction… the money that made Jolo relatively rich went to enrich Zamboanga, General Santos, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Manila… And because there was capital flight and the destruction of infrastructure, the best and brightest had to leave because there were no opportunities and they had to support their families,” she said.
The Marcos administration then, concerned about possible consequences from oil-producing Muslim nations, took steps to address the humanitarian impact in the predominantly Muslim province. It established a government task force to lead Jolo’s recovery, which included actions like stopping loan repayments to banks, providing significant loans to residents, and pausing tax collection temporarily.
Elgin Salomon, an assistant history professor at UP-Visayas in Iloilo, said the government then initially concealed the situation in Jolo and later framed the narrative that it was fighting “Maoist rebels” in Jolo through its controlled media.
The MNLF subsequently abandoned its pursuit of independence and forged a peace agreement with the Ramos administration in the 1990s. The accord led to the establishment of the now-defunct Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), the precursor to the current and expanded Bangsamoro region.
Five decades later, what lingers is a sense of nostalgia, with many survivors still longing to witness the return of Jolo’s former glory, said Agnes Shari Tan Aliman, a survivor and author of the book The Siege of Jolo, 1974.

Manila, Philippines, 5 May 2023 – AirAsia Philippines is on a clear and strong path to recovery after posting a 92% load factor in Q1 2023, among the highest in all AirAsia airline operations centers.
Overall, AirAsia Philippines’ flight frequency, seat capacity, and the number of passengers carried from January to March 2023 increased to almost 84% compared to pre-pandemic levels. The World’s Best Low-Cost Airline also sold 1.4 million seats in Q1 2023, 8% higher than the previous, while sales on international seats increased by 70%.
The full recovery of the Philippine domestic market and stronger demand for international destinations were seen as the biggest contributing factor to this milestone.
AirAsia Philippines Communications and Public Affairs Country Head Steve Dailisan said, “AirAsia Philippines intends to sustain the momentum by opening more international destinations this Q2 and Q3. We expect these developments to encourage more guests to fulfill their travel plans as we impact the speedy recovery of the travel and tourism industry. To sustain our momentum, the airline continues with the push to return to service more aircraft which will be assigned to our Cebu, Clark, and Kalibo hubs.”
With the full restoration of AirAsia’s domestic and international routes, destinations such as Puerto Princesa, Tagbilaran, Boracay, Narita, Osaka, and Macao have become the top-performing routes coming from the Manila Hub. AirAsia’s Cebu Hub also performed well in Puerto Princesa and Boracay routes.
To entice more guests to fulfill their travel plans, the World’s Best Low-Cost Airline is offering a PHP 55 one-way base fare from its Manila, Cebu, and Clark hubs to domestic and international destinations such as Davao, Cagayan De Oro, Seoul, Kaohsiung, Guangzhou, and Tokyo for flights booked until 7 May and utilized until 30 November 2023.
The World’s Best Low-Cost Airline is also enticing guests to maximize their travel experience by making use of airasia Super App’s mobile check-in capabilities. AirAsia self-check-in kiosks are also available at the airport for guests who’d like to avoid queues at the check-in counters.

Pandemic Thoughts # 174
I have been in the cosplay community for 12 years and all I can say is that these are the years in which I am very grateful that I had experienced being an otaku who also portrayed various characters. I had met a lot of people along the way and the extroverted side of mine really shows most of these events, well, kind of experiencing minor pains but it is part of the package if you are a cosplayer. Well, for my future plans in this community, aside from laying low for cosplaying on competitions, I would like to take part in organizing an event itself and to also compete in future competitions. My dream cosplays are still far from reach but I know in myself I would learn to innovate and to find ways to bring my aspired cosplays come to life. The friends and acquaintances that I made in the cosplay community here in our city in Cagayan De Oro and also in other provinces made me feel that I am part of something. A family. Also, I had built confidence along the way in participating in various cosplay events that happened here in Cagayan and made great connections with people who has the same interest as mine. I know for others this is a hobby but for me, it has been my passion to cosplay. I really wanted to step up in the cosplay playing field, from being a staff to competing in various competitions in any events. Like I give a damn if my pictures has least number of likes or comments, I'm not here to please them but to enjoy my hobby and in the same time, my passion aside from writing. Truly, cosplaying help me to outgrew myself from being in the sides into someone who loves to walk on the runway being a different character for a day. This has been one of my outlets to release my artistic expression about myself, the side which is creative and jolly. I just realized it that I had outgrew myself from every year of my life because of cosplaying. I had more confidence with myself, I had manage to form great connections with different people, and I had found a community and a place in which I truly belong. I know that other way of fun are not truly meant for me and it's fine for me either way because I felt that somewhat I had fun but clubbing and nightlife are not my cup of teas. I really know in myself that I am still an adult with a childlike heart and I love to cosplay. I hope for myself that in this community, I would step up little by little and to enjoy the moments of being in this community. From con-going, to cosplaying, to being a staff, and to take memories in every character I hope to portray. For the future aside from anime characters, I am considering cosplaying movie or game characters which always piqued my interest.

Since June of last year, I've heard life-changing stories from the leadership of Cong. Mujiv Hataman and Mayor Sitti Djalia "Dada" Turabin Hataman in Basilan from my good friend JL. The Basilan that we know today is a different era from what it used to be, and is a product of compassionate, people-centered, and consultative governance. Quite honestly, I'm a lowkey fan of this couple.
I am continously amazed that these kind of people exists — coming from very influential families in Mindanao, they decided to dedicate their lives to advocating for indigenous people’s human rights, and breaking norms for progressive changes in Basilan, and in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
I first met Cong. Mujiv in Cagayan de Oro. He was really simple, but he has this commanding aura. He can make the crowd go silent and listen to him. He can make the mood light, but can still his convey his thoughts with conviction. He is a damn good public speaker. Anyway, fanboying aside, I really admire him for bringing the change he envisioned — making Basilan a self-sufficient province, giving it the fortitude to withstand and recover quickly from any conflicts.

Week 3 Blog: Menardos Aquatics
Maynard Egie Dumaguing is the owner of Menardos aquatics, He lives in NHA Phase 1 kauswagan Cagayan de Oro City. He started this business in 2017 as a hobby because fish keeping keeps him relax and stress free. He learned breeding some of his fishes and came up with an idea of selling it in order to have a small income. He only uses some of the spaces in his house in order to place his aquariums and ref tubs, then suddenly in the middle of 2018 he stopped breeding and selling fishes due to schooling and lack of space.
He manage to have enough profit in order to buy his needs and wants, he also experience failure throughout the process because business is always risky and every entrepreneur should expect this kinds of problems through his/her journey in business.
On December 2019 he decided to start again fish keeping up until the pandemic came. He suffer loss of income and the only thing that only he thinks of having an income is through opening his business again, then all of a sudden some buyers manage to buy his products. Here is a picture of a taxi driver that bought a good quality goldfish of his breed product.
The taxi driver said that he saw his posts online where transactions are mostly on facebook because in that time safety protocols are so strict but still he manage to deliver while following the Governments rules.
He also has a mud pond for his koi fish where it is located at pigsag,an Cagayan de oro city. It is a province behind opol where fresh water is abundant and it is a great water choice for keeping koi. Mud pond also is a good quality type of a pond due to micro nutrients that can be consumed by the fish. His business failed on breeding it due to dry season. His fishes was transferred to another pond because it doesn’t have enough water to supply for his own pond and that is why he decided to get it back and keep it in his house. Failure really strikes and test you to your limit, but still he will continue and learn from it. No matter how big or small your business it, it has to be tough and enough to face the challenges in that situation.

Books for Marawi: Malaysian Generosity Enriches Mindanao
A Beacon of Hope for Marawi Schoolchildren
In a heartwarming act of solidarity and support, the Malaysian government and the renowned book retailer Big Bad Wolf Books have extended their hands across the sea to Marawi City, Lanao del Sur, donating more than 1,000 books to the city's schoolchildren. This generous initiative aims to foster good relations between Malaysia and the Philippines and significantly boost literacy rates among the youth of Mindanao.
Strengthening Literacy and Relations
A Partnership for Education Malaysian Ambassador Dato Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino emphasized the initiative's role in strengthening bilateral ties. Moreover, he highlighted its focus on educational enrichment in Mindanao. With the symbolic turnover of books to the Mindanao State University's King Faisal Center for Islamic, Arabic, and Asian Studies, hopes are high for the expansion of this project to encompass more schools across Mindanao. Engaging the Community The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has joined forces in this noble cause, identifying schools and children in Lanao del Sur who are most in need of educational support. DSWD Undersecretary Fatimah Aliah Dimaporo highlighted the plight of many children in the province, particularly orphans housed in boarding schools known as "torils," who rely heavily on private donations for educational materials.
A Milestone Event for Cagayan de Oro
Big Bad Wolf's First Sale in the City This donation coincides with Big Bad Wolf Books' inaugural 18-day sale in Cagayan de Oro City, marking a significant milestone for the company and the local community. Furthermore, founded in Malaysia, Big Bad Wolf aims to ignite a passion for reading among the youth, believing in the transformative power of books to inspire minds and change lives.
A Chapter of Hope
The collaborative efforts of the Malaysian Embassy, Big Bad Wolf Books, and local Philippine agencies underscore a shared commitment to education and literacy. Breakfast was excellent, Located beside the malls is a nice convenience, Price was very resonable for the quality of the hotel. The Mallberry Hotel is excellent all the way around except, no hot water. Since this is a common issue in the Philippines it wasn't a big deal to me but my wife sure was disappointed. Location beside the mall is fabulously convenient and security there is very good. All the employees were friendly and courteous to our needs!! I highly recommend this hotel & will stay there again when visiting City "O"!!

Location, food and staff I have in the past stayed at Seda Hotel when i am in CDO(at about twice the price). This time I was planning on reeling in my expenses and what a windfall I had. The staff were on the whole excellent. The waiter in Rosso (Jey i think) was outstanding - polite, friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. The prices in Rosso were about 250-350 php for a lot of the main meals...about 8-11 $Aus. Outstanding value and great quality. The staff in the Blue Duck bar were of a similar standard. Now for the bad bits - WiFi in my room was pathetic! The best reception was in the bathroom, so i ended sitting on the toilet to get average reception. Even on the 2nd floor in the business lounge, the staff said the WiFi there was poor also - this is why the lobby bar is full during the day..the only place for good reception (and this is a business hotel?). My only other complaint was the choice of breakfast for Westerners - scrambled eggs and pancakes only! (I get that this is a primarily Filipino business hotel). Will I return...definitely YES!!

Mallberry hotel is a wonderful oasis in the busy and tired heart of CDO. The hotel has so many dining options that it's difficult to choose my favorite as they're all good. Great spa with wonderful staff and truly soothing massages. Rosso is a great little resto right off the main lobby - try the Gamba Quattro appetizer. Mallberry is your best bet in CDO - you won't be disappointed.

I checked in with my husband and after checked in, he went outside for a gig. Upon returning to the hotel, it is already dawn and no one is in the front desk. he cannot contact me too since i ran out of battery and my charger was left in the car with him (yes very unfortunate). As a result, he cannot use the elevator without me bringing the key card so that thw elevator will work. So as a piece of advice, ask for 2 key cards if there's more than one who will stay in this hotel 😁 It will also save time for you don't need to fetch your family everytime they will go down the hotel to buy something or whatever.

The location is great, though it is away from downtown area, the place is near the mall and there are lots of convenience stores outside, a massage parlor, restaurants etc. The place from where we stayed (9th floor) is also quiet. The room is just enough for a couple, the facilities are nice, there are plates, pans and cooking utensils provided, even a washing machine. Free Wifi is working but the TV has only 2 or 3 channels working. All in all, good value for money, we will recommend this to our friends and won't hesitate to stay here again if we are coming back to CDO again.

"Great value for money!!” Super love this place!! Location of the hotel is perfect! It is at the city center and a less crowded place than the one in Cogon. It is just a few steps away from Redtail too. A famous shrimp/seafood restaurant in CDO!! Also close to other fast-food chains like Jollibee, Mang Inasal, Burger King and a lot of coffee shops, and other restaurants nearby. There is a convenience store in front of the hotel too. The room is surprisingly nice and really clean. My first impression is that the hotel is already old so it won't be that nice but the room was clean, CR is clean and actually nice too. I love the bed because it looks like the whole mattress is made from memory foam!! So soft but not painful in the body. I love their bed so much. Airconditioning is cold too. So cold there was a time we turned it off for a few minutes then turned it back on again. Staff or the receptionist is not that friendly though. They answer your question but not as friendly as other kagay-anons we’ve met.

Bike Touring the Philippines
Bobby Lagsa
For most of his life, Melchizedek "Merky" Aranas Garcia have been dreaming of traveling the entire Philippines-each of the 81 provinces, there is. His dream came true in 2019 when he biked around the country for the first time.
Merky is just one of the growing numbers of Filipinos who are taking the extreme length to pedal their ways around the country, exploring places most Filipinos can only dream of.
On February 24, 2021, Merky, along with fellow adventure bikers, Romeo Llante of Cavite and Valeri de Guzman of Baguio City started their journey to bike tour the archipelago all the way to Davao City where Merkey lives.
Garcia is a seafarer by profession and when he arrived in the country following a 14-months work onboard, he planned that he will bike his way home to Davao City.
Like Garcia, Llante is an engineer working in the Middle East for almost 10 years while de Guzman is a social entrepreneur.
This is not the first time for the trio to bike their way around the Philippines. Garcia did his first in 2019 right after getting off the ship. Llante also did an extended bike tour in 2019, spending six months on the road alone. de Guzman is also a veteran long-distance biker.
They left San Pedro, Laguna on the 24th of February, and for the next 45 days, they would pedal their way to Southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
Garcia said that bike touring is an entirely different approach than just doing the Philippine Loop. “With bike touring, your aim is to tour the country rather than just passing by, doing the Maharlika Route all the way to Mindanao and taking the RORO (Roll-on, Roll-Off) ship to cross the island,” Garcia said.
"The goal is to tour, not just speed your way around the country, without even stopping to enjoy the destinations," Garcia said.
“When I was growing up, I dream of biking my way around Mindanao. When I had my apprenticeship on board, I saw how beautiful the Philippines is,” Garcia said.
Garcia added that back then, he had no money and thought of just biking his way to get to places.
For Llante, it was an outlet to get away from the hustle of life in Cavite and from working overseas for an extended period.
OPEN TIME, OPEN BUDGET
What open time, open budget means is that they have no formal plans of what route they are going to take. “Anytime we can change our plan, we can change our route, we can change how long we are going to stay in a place,” Garcia said.
The trio agreed to their plan. They can spend as much time on the road as they can. They passed by countless tourism destinations during their 45 days on the road.
“I wanted to climb mountains,” Llante said. In his 2019 tour, he climbed 11 mountains including Mount Apo, Kitanglad in Bukidnon, Hibok-hibok in Camiguin Island.
They have crossed muddy road, climbed mountain roads just to get out-of-the-way waterfalls, rivers, and communities they wanted to explore.
“Our longest stay was in Samar, where we spent 2 weeks exploring the two provinces,” Garcia said.
They camped out in Huplag Adventure Camp in Bantayan Cliff, Ando Island, Borongan City where they get to experience sleeping on a hanging hammock with a 150 meters drop to the seas.
“We waited for the replica of Magellan’s ship the Juan Sebastián Elcano to arrive in Guiuan, Eastern Samar,” Llante said.
When the El Cano arrived in Homonhon Island, they rented an outrigger to get closer to the ship. “Sadly, we were not allowed to go on board because of Covid protocols,” Llante said.
After the El Cano crossing, they spend the next 2 days in Homonhon and Suluan Islands before heading back to the mainland and off their way to Leyte.
Along with their ways, they were met by fellow bikers who are only too eager to host them. “Sometimes, I informed friends who I met during the 2019 tour that I am passing by,” Garcia said.
“Sometimes, when they met us, they would bike with us to destinations, and when we get there, foods are already prepared for us,” Garcia said.
The trio, along with other bike clubs that hosted them, also held community engagement programs like feeding and giving school supplies for children.
LOGISTICS, PREPARATIONS
Biking for an extended period of time can be a difficult task and it takes determination and courage just to conquer steep climbs and muddy roads to get to their next destinations.
“Before I arrived from my work onboard, I already planned my bike tour, told some of my friends I’m doing a bike tour again,” Garcia said.
Garcia wanted to invite friends so that it will be more fun. “It is more fun to share the road with friends who share the same passion as you are,” Garcia said.
Llante and de Guzman rise to the challenge of Garcia.
“My bag only consisted of 3 short pants, shirts,” Garcia said. On his backpack, he carries his drone that would prove to be very useful in getting dramatic, scenic shots.
“You only need to bring light materials, all our clothing are quick-dry,” Llante said.
Their daily budget is only 500 pesos per person per day, except for destinations that they would need to spend more, 500 was their daily budget which include foods, hotels, drinks.
"On the road, you need to eat well and hydrate well," Llante said.
“The plan really is to set-up tents by sunset,” Garcia said.
“We would sleep in barangay halls, beaches, gasoline stations, roads with trees we can hang our hammocks,” Llante added.
But mostly, Filipinos welcomed them to their homes, offering sleeping spaces. Experiencing the hospitality of the Filipino people was a humbling experience. "We are strangers and yet they welcome us, provide us shelter and food as we share our stories with them," Garcia said.
“When there is nowhere else to sleep, we would pay entrance fees to resorts and just camp on the beach,” Llante added.
There were days also that they do really need to take a good sleep to recover physically and had to spend nights in resorts or inns. “We need to rest, but hotels are our last resort,” Garcia said.
They also agreed never to travel during nighttime, except for one instance during the first few days of the tour. after pedaling for almost 18 hours, they arrived in Naga City around 11 pm raking in almost 200 kilometers.
“We agreed to pedal only during daylight, where sunset catches us up, we would set up camp for the night, we are not in a hurry anyway,” Garcia said.
200 kilometers is the most the pedaled in a single day, after that, their average is just about 80 kilometers per day.
There are times that they would need to rest at noon for an extended time as the heat of the sun becomes almost unbearable. “We rest where we wanted to, we don’t plan of getting to this town or that town, we stop at sunset,” Garcia said.
When they arrived in Davao City where Garcia is from, de Guzman had to make her way to Cagayan de Oro and left the two. De Guzman could be in Cebu as of this writing, doing her Cebu loop on and on her way to Negros Island.
THE PHILIPPINES IS A BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY
Garcia and Llante eventually pedaled their way to this city, spending two days along Sayre Highway, exploring Bukidnon. They arrived here on May 1 and spent 4 days here exploring and meeting with fellow Philippine Bike tour loopers.
Words on the biking community here were that de Guzman was met by an all-female bikers group and was given a warm welcome.
Bike touring the Philippines was a humbling experience for Garcia and Llante. They have pedaled almost 3 thousand kilometers and visited most provinces along the Maharlika Highway.
Garcia’s count crossed out 63 out of 81 provinces since he started his bike tour in 2019. Llante crossed out 11 mountains, and almost visited each province in the Philippines.
They have seen most of Filipinos can only dream of- touring the entire Philippines, learning cultures and traditions, meeting people, and experienced lgendary Filipino hospitality and conquering their own selves.
Garcia and Llante is a testament of achieving dreams even if it means just being armed with just bare necessities.
Garcia and Llante is now planning their next bike tour, hoping that more bikers would join them.
NOTE:
all photographs were provided by Merky Garcia
FOR THEIR 2021 Philippine Bike Tour, Garcia spent 35 thousand while Llante spent 50 thousand.
Since Valerie de Guzman was already in Cebu, she was not around for the interview.

Did you know that the enchanting Balite Tree is more than just a myth?
Balete tree in Siquijor, a province in the Visayas (Photo by Belle Piccio)
This plant species is commonly known as Balite tree (Ficus balete Merr.)
Do you happen see this plant?
Or as you pass by the bridge did you always see this plant present?
For you, do you find this as important animate object in the City?
Well, when seeing balite tree, people usually think horror stories. In my twenty-two (22) years residing in Cagayan de Oro City, I always encounter this kind of plant and I wonder even it is not planted intentionally this species grow naturally in the backyard. Even though the community tried to remove a huge balite tree in our barangay wherein instance people avoid as possible this tree by which mostly influenced by their superstition beliefs from legendary urban stories and not as much appreciated as one of the important tree in our environment. Also, the other reason was to plant other native tree they planned that would contribute to the community in times of flood control and to promote green urban space. Which indeed sounds reasonable at all, since planting native trees is one major factor that contribute in our environment today and becomes a vital protection for communities against floods and water pollution.
However, did you know that this enchanting balite tree is more than just a myth?
Balite trees are plant species endemic in our country, a native tree as shelter of indigenous flora and fauna that depends on their food, soil will not erode by grappling the strength of this tree, and the community itself benefited as their extra shade as well as refreshing air that could not be altered by any kind of air condition unit. In addition, balite trees provides the community valuable natural resources and can utilizes as herbal medicine of its root, bark of root and leaves.
Moreover, planting trees that was not adaptable in the area does not necessarily to introduce other kind of plant instead planting trees that are present already in the area is advisable to address specifically endemic species that will survive is a great advantage in the community and of its term endemic species aside from providing oxygen, this trees help recover and expand habitats in the forest for threatened native species of flora and fauna. Also, develops the continuity with the local natural landscape.
Before the total lockdown in Cagayan de Oro City caused by the spread pandemic of Covid-19, I also experienced doubts of balite trees that I found in our community because this looks like nothing to help in the environment aside from trees releases oxygen by photosynthesis and can store and absorb large amount of water that helps to alleviate against flood and are anchored deep down into the ground that are not easily get toppled by strong winds. Eventually, as I moved up to college currently a student taking up as an environmental science I grow to find it interesting to explore information about this plant and by the help from our instructors my thoughts were then gradually learns fundamental significant of this trees as well as in other organizations that promote green society and supporting native flora species.
Photo taken in Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental, Philippines. 2021.
This balite tree grows in our backyard, the old huge balite tree was cut down three (3) years ago yet this plant still grow in our community and was decided to regrow naturally where an advantage of seminars that educate people of how these tree contribute not only for its shady effect but how this help in flood risks and promoting sustainable green urban forest. And thus, there is nothing wrong to stand of what people believed after all we have our different opinions and as part of Filipinos known of its legendary urban stories. However, limiting ourselves ruins our chance to change productively thereby educating ourselves about the environment this enhanced our actions to maintain healthily of the biodiversity. Also, engaging planting trees activity this strengthens inside the community, so let us support planting native trees and forest conservation in our community!

AirAsia destinations set to thrive during the holiday season
No more COVID-19 test for Boracay and General Santos City guests
Manila, 12 November 2021 – AirAsia Philippines considers the removal of the COVID-19 RT-PCR tests for inbound tourists to Caticlan (Boracay) a welcome development, in time for the expected pent-up demand for air travel during the holiday season.
Beginning 16 November, fully vaccinated guests flying to Boracay via Caticlan will only have to present their vaccination cards as entry requirements, as announced by the Provincial Government of Aklan. The announcement comes after the successful inoculation among tourism workers which is now at 94%.
AirAsia guests will still be required to submit requirements such as hotel booking and upload digital copy of their vaccination card to secure a QR code
Similarly, the local government of General Santos City has also decided to do away with the negative RT-PCR test and the mandatory quarantine for fully vaccinated returning residents.
AirAsia Philippines Spokesperson Steve Dailisan said, ”As cited by our guests, the cost of COVID-19 tests hindered their plans to travel before. Now that most destinations support enhanced mobility for fully vaccinated individuals, we are looking at increasing our frequencies to sustain market demand.”
“This significant development allows us to end Q4 2021 with high hopes of recovery and in turn, empower micro and small medium enterprises to thrive again as we embrace post pandemic recovery.”
9 out of 11 AirAsia Philippines destinations are now open for leisure travel. These are Caticlan, Cebu, Bohol, Puerto Princesa ( El Nido and San Vicente), Tacloban, Bacolod, Iloilo, Cagayan De Oro and Davao.
A recent research conducted by AirAsia Philippines revealed that 96% of Filipinos will push through with their travel plans. 35% meanwhile revealed they plan to travel this Q4 while 60% plans to travel within the next 6 months.
The survey also revealed that 56% will travel with family and friends while 57% will travel for relaxation and 44% will travel to explore new places.
“While more and more destinations are opening and travel restrictions lifted, we would like to assure our guests that health and safety remain AirAsia’s topmost priority, and that all these measures are hassle-free and digitally convenient for all”, Dailisan added.
AirAsia Philippines continues to operate at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 in Pasay City until further notice.
AirAsia was recently awarded as AirAsia awarded Asia’s Leading Low-Cost Airline 2021 and Asia’s Low-Cost Airline Cabin Crew 2021 at the 28th World Travel Awards, the Business Innovation Award at the 2021 World Airline Awards from the aviation experts at Flightglobal, Best Low-Cost Airline in the world and in Asia for the 12th consecutive year by international airport and airline review and ranking site Skytrax. AirAsia Group is also among the top airlines worldwide to achieve the top 7/7 rating for being Covid-19 safe by the aviation experts at Airlineratings.com.
