Downsized Commonwealth Games 2026: A Heavy Cost for Indian Sports
The passing of Queen Elizabeth II seems to have influenced the Commonwealth Games 2026, particularly concerning the venues and the reduced number of sports featured in this major event. Originally, the host city was to be Victoria, Australia, but rising costs associated with hosting 22 sports have compelled the city to withdraw. The Commonwealth Games have always held a special place for the late queen, who played a significant role in popularizing this event among the 74 Commonwealth nations, home to nearly 2.5 billion people—about one-third of the world’s population...click here to read more

[ad_1] Narendra Modi Stadium It’s official. India wants to host the 2036 Olympics and Paralympics, but the big question is when and where. On Tuesday, news flew thick and fast, with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports being quoted first, India had submitted an official letter through the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). It was addressed to the International Olympic Committee’s Future Host Commission. By late evening on Tuesday, the news was confirmed through a video posted by PT Usha, president, IOA, attesting that the National Olympic Committee had written in October 2024 to the IOC. To start with, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had attended the IOC session last year in Mumbai. He had spoken about India’s keenness to host the Summer Olympics as well as the Paralympics. He had again mentioned it to the Indian diaspora in New York a few months ago. India is very keen to host the Games. This is, indeed, fantastic news, but there has to be a proper bid document expressing intent and where the Olympics is to be held and how the host city will go through the process. A mere three-page letter sent by the IOA would serve very little purpose. Anyone who has followed the Olympic Movement and how nations bid for the Summer Olympics is aware that the bid is made by a host city. There are elaborate plans, detailing how it will work and what will be the infrastructure put in place. More importantly, legacy value, how the Olympics will address climate change and more contentious issues like carbon emission levels are discussed. Above all, there is a strong push to cap the cost of the Games. If these are fine details, right now, nobody knows which city in India will be the host. It cannot be like this. Since the time Motera in the outskirts of Ahmedabad was refurbished and rechristened as the Narendra Modi Stadium in 2021, right in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, there have been murmurs that Ahmedabad will be the host city. Indeed, the renovated cricket stadium can be converted into a main stadium for the Olympics. There is plenty of real estate around, which can be developed for more stadiums as well. But the point is, nobody has officially mentioned Ahmedabad, or even Gandhinagar, as the host city. This lack of clarity on the Olympic host city is now being questioned abroad by those who have taken note of India’s interest. Mind you, nobody is mocking India’s intent to host the Olympics. A lot has changed since the time India hosted the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. The CWG was delivered well, but lawsuits, corruption cases, officials going to jail and more dirt grabbed the headlines after the Games ended. Even now, the Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, which hosted the opening and closing ceremonies plus the main events like track and field makes news for the wrong reasons like the venue had been rented out for a music concert. Debris and dirt were left behind which came in for flak. Surely, hosting an Olympics means the city has to be identified first. Take the case of Australia, when it wanted to host the Games in 2000. They came to know in 1993 that the showpiece event had been awarded to Sydney by the IOC. Indeed, Sydney did a great job, with public participation at an all-time high. Again, despite political differences in Brisbane, the stakeholders are planning in detail how they will host the Olympics in 2032. Australia is a sporting nation and plans well in advance. For that matter, even when the Victoria state decided it was not going to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, it informed the CGF (Commonwealth Games Federation) in 2023 itself. India has the will to host an Olympics but no time can be wasted in identifying which city will be the host. This is the first question which the world is asking at this point of time. Unless there is clarity in this regard, there can be no movement forward. Again, this decision cannot be taken by the IOA, it has to come from the highest office. The good part, many athletes and Para-athletes
have already sent in best wishes that India hosts the Summer Olympics and Paralympics successfully. What needs to be done right away is to name the host city. That will surely create a buzz. Hockey, cricket, wrestling, badminton, squash axed from 2026 CWG in Glasgow
In a major blow to India’s medal hopes in the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the organisers have dropped hockey, cricket, wrestling, badminton, squash, and table tennis, among others, from the sports programme for the coming edition.
In most of the sports which have been dropped from the Games, India finished on podium in the last edition in Birmingham in 2022.

Commonwealth Games 2026 Drops Key Sports Like Cricket and Shooting: A Setback for India?
The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) recently made a tough decision to exclude some major sports like cricket, hockey, shooting, and badminton from the 2026 Commonwealth Games (CWG), and this has raised eyebrows, especially in India. These are sports where India has historically excelled, and their removal is seen as a big blow to the country’s medal prospects. But what’s the real reason…

‘One-bout selection for Bajrang, Vinesh unfair’
Antim and Sujeet’s coaches respect elite wrestlers but feel two-stage selection trials do not provide a level playing field; one of them plans to meet IOA’s ad-hoc panel to lodge their protest
CHENNAI: In an extraordinary move, wrestlers, their parents and coaches have come out in the open and spoken up against the alleged biases in the selection trials being held to pick up the national team for reputed tournaments. The two-stage Asian Games selection trials proposed by the ad-hoc committee to accommodate protesting wrestlers seem to have infuriated others as they plan to protest against the move by approaching the panel and registering their complaints. They felt this would put them under more pressure to perform. Moreover, the coaches felt the wrestlers will have to wait till August to know whether they would be part of the India team.
As reported by this daily a few days ago, the ad-hoc committee has decided to give six wrestlers — Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sangeeta Phogat, Sakshi Malik, Satyawart Kadian and Jitender Kinha — a chance to qualify for Asian Games as well as World Championships by competing in just one bout against the winners of the selection trials in their respective weight categories.
As per the proposal, others have to win trials in their respective weight categories before taking on these wrestlers, who had protested against the sidelined Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, in August.
“This is unfair. The same was the case in the past and now the panel, which was formed with the objective to remove such flaws, is following the same practice,” Vikas Bhardwaj, Antim Panghal’s childhood coach from Baba Lal Das Kushti Academy, Hisar, told this daily. Antim, India’s first-ever U-20 world champion, competes in 53kg, the weight category two-time Olympian Vinesh has made her own with her consistent show over the years.
And her coach is not the only one to raise his voice against the trials that may give undue advantage to the elite wrestlers. Dayanand Kalkar, father and coach of Sujeet, who is the 2022 national champion in 65kg, is also not pleased with the decision. It’s the same weight category wherein Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist and multiple medallist at the Worlds Bajrang competes. “If the ad-hoc panel wants to continue the malpractice then give Sujeet a bye as well since he is also the reigning national champion in 65kg,” Dayanand told this daily. Sujeet last year won U-20 Worlds bronze apart from winning gold in the Tunisia Ranking Series.
Apart from being the closest rivals of Vinesh and Bajrang in the country, both Antim and Sujeet are termed as India’s future. They had already faced off against the experienced duo in the past with Antim losing to Vinesh twice including the 2022 Commonwealth Games selection trials. Sujeet had competed against Bajrang once in the CWG trials closely losing the bout.
“During the CWG trials as well Bajrang was given direct entry into the semifinals. Sujeet had to win three bouts before competing against a relatively fresh Bajrang. We are not afraid and ready to take on Bajrang once again but by doing this (one bout for selection) the panel is not setting the right precedent. We will speak to the panel and lodge a complaint if needed,” added Dayanand.
Antim’s coach Vikas explained how such privileges given to senior wrestlers can affect upcoming grapplers both physically and mentally. “Antim will first have to overcome challenges from other wrestlers in the first trials. She will have to maintain her weight before the first trials. If she wins there, she has to do the same before the trials against Vinesh later. It can affect her physically as there wouldn’t be a big gap between the two trials. Besides, even if she wins the first trial, she will be under tremendous pressure as she knows she has to win another trial more than a month later against two-time Worlds medallist Vinesh.”
Antim and Sujeet have been training at their respective centres despite the ongoing turmoil in Indian wrestling ever since the protest began against Brij Bhushan in January. Given the hard work they have been putting in for months now, the coaches’ only demand is a level playing field. “Let the best wrestler win but for that to happen, you need to be fair to everyone irrespective of reputation and past laurels,” the coaches signed off.

[ad_1] Glasgow to host Commonwealth Games 2026 (PC: Commonwealth Sport) Just 10 disciplines at the 2026 Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2 is bad news for Indian sports. After Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) president Chris Jenkins came to India recently and met Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha, it became well known that the Glasgow Games would be a condensed affair. In one swoop the Glasgow Games hosts knocked off cricket, badminton, hockey and wrestling from the programme, and it hits India badly. Reactions have started to come from athletes at home but nothing can be done about it. As Indian men’s hockey team coach Craig Fulton said: “It is what it is.” That’s the best way to sum it up. Officially, India had written a protest letter last week to the CWG hosts when they got to know major disciplines were being removed. But then, nothing could be done about it as the event is held after financial support had been promised in substantial sums from Victoria State in Australia. They had refused to host the CWG in 2023 and for the CGF, it had become embarrassing as no nation wanted to host it. Glasgow was finally chosen as the host after hectic parlays and a promise that the Games would not cause financial distress. In fact, it was surprising, Jenkins came to India and started speaking about the 2030 edition of the CWG which needs to be hosted by more than one nation. There are just no takers for these Games. From the Indian athletes’ point of view, a reduction in events and important disciplines being knocked off will hit the medal tally for sure. In 2018, when the CWG was hosted by Gold Coast, Australia, India won 66 medals. Four years later, in Birmingham, the medal tally came down to 61, of which 12 were from wrestling alone. India did win medals in athletics (8) in Birmingham, despite Neeraj Chopra’s absence. Indian boxers won seven medals and badminton provided six medals. For the Latest Sports News: Click Here Commonwealth Games. Source: X A definite reduction in India’s projected medal tally in Glasgow is just one part of the story. There are some sports like weightlifting where India has no depth at all. Mirabai Chanu has been part of Indian campaigns for so long, there is no new face who can be showcased by the Indian federation. Solid work has to begin now. Maybe, it will make sense for the sports federations which still have a role to play in Indian sports vis-a-vis the 2026 CWG to get back to the drawing board and chalk out details. More time is being wasted on the IOA politics at present, which has come in for flak even from the IOC (International Olympic Committee). There is already heartburn among some Indian athletes who will not participate in Glasgow. A similar situation had arisen after the highs of the 2018 Gold Coast CWG, when Birmingham said it will not keep shooting in the programme. India protested, threatening to pull out even. However, all that was just tough posturing. If anyone says India should protest at the exclusion of key sporting disciplines, it will be meaningless. It is well known, Glasgow has finalised the Games plan with enormous budget constraints. The more drastic view would be to scrap the CWG, but if that be the case, India would not have been cozying up to the CGF bosses in New Delhi just after the Paris Olympics. It is also believed the CGF bosses are even looking at India as part hosts of the 2030 Games, though it is not on record. Viewed from another angle, the CWG has served as a precursor to the Asian Games for India. In 2022, the situation was different as Hangzhou had postponed the Asian Games due to the Covid pandemic to 2023. India did compete in the Birmingham CWG where the women’s cricket team won a silver medal. Cricket has been junked by Glasgow, though it will be a medal sport at the Olympics in 2028 in Los Angeles. Ideally, those who plan sports in India need to accept the reality of Glasgow and plan for the 2024 Asian Games in Nagoya as well.
There are 22 months to prepare for and it will be defining. From the 2026 Asian Games to 2028 LA, there will be need for more detailing and to see how India can win quota places. Rather than crying over what Glasgow has done, Indian sports needs to stay positive.
