2023 KTM 1290 Super Duke RR - Limited Numbers, Unlimited Fury

Following the roaring success of the KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE RR in 2021, 500 units of the 2023 KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE RR will go into production, promising the same levels of ferocity but with a meaner, darker look. The KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE RR will once again rip into the Tarmac, leaving a deep, lasting impression as the ultimate limited-edition Hyper Naked motorcycle in the KTM stable. The numbers tell the story – 1,301 cc, 180 hp, 180 kg and 140 Nm, with a phenomenal 1:1 power-to-weight ratio, making it every bit as beastly as its predecessor, but with a darker shadow. Sporting a gloss black and matt carbon base, contrasting white graphics and striking orange accents, the 2023 KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE RR casts an ominous shadow with menacing intentions. This is further exaggerated with a collection of unique custom-made components which are specific to the RR, adding more aggression and attitude. With the KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE RR being 11 kg lighter than a standard KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R EVO, it is equally at home decimating lap times as it is carving up mountain roads, providing riders with the ultimate Hyper Naked package. However, it’s the collection of WP Suspension’s finest components worn by the 1290 SUPER DUKE RR that take it from a backroad brawler to accomplished track day terror. Upfront, a fully adjustable WP APEX PRO 7548 closed cartridge fork has been tailored specifically for the RR, while a custom-made WP APEX PRO 7746 shock takes charge of the rear. The WP APEX PRO 7117 steering damper keeps things in check, offering 30 clicks to dial it into your specification. Carbon fibre is used extensively, with the subframe also receiving the lightweight carbon treatment, creating a unique single-seat unit. The market for luxury hard-bound journals has been well established by a number of bigger brands - of note, Moleskine and Leuchtturm are the major contenders locally in this format. I���ve never really been a fan of the paper Moleskine uses (it’s not terribly fountain pen-friendly and overall it’s quite expensive for what you get) and despite recommendations for paper quality and FP-friendliness, I’ve been putting off trying Leuchtturm1917, also for reasons of cost.

So, lately, I’ve been trying some of the close alternatives. 

I was holiday shopping today when I came across the ‘Picasso Fine Journal’ offered by CTG Brands at Best Living (an Asian furnishing shop in Toronto) and had to check it out. 

This is a 4.5x6.5″ hardbound notebook with 80 sheets of 80gsm lined paper. Like most books in this format, it’s got a soft faux-leather cover (also available in black, white, purple, blue and i *think* pink? Will need to check.), elastic enclosure with pen loop, marker ribbon and expandable inner pocket. From what I recall, there was one smaller size and two larger, although offhand I don’t know what those sizes would be specifically.

It opens reasonably well and is generally unobtrusive under the hand from side to side but, as a somewhat small book, it does not lie flat on its own. The paper is cream-coloured and the lines are thin, grey, unobtrusive and present no obvious resist issues under application of ink. 

Overall, I am quite pleased and surprised at the quality of the paper and the build of the book.

The binding uses a quality fabric base that holds together stitched booklets and the whole thing is seated securely within the cover. 

The paper has some tooth to it, but takes to fountain pen ink quite well. I used quite a few pens, ranging from extra-fine to stub nibs, plus a couple pencils, gel roller-ball & Sharpie, and experienced relatively few problems. 

The bulk of my writing on this paper during testing was done with an extra-fine Wahl Eversharp #2 flex nib, which is rather scratchy to begin with. The paper held up well and didn’t feather as I feared it might. Edges for most of my inks on this paper have been pretty clean and crisp - Even deAtramentis Magenta Red-Gold and Heliogen Green-Copper (which i’ve had significant feathering problems with in the past on other reputable paper) behaved quite well in swab tests. 

CTG is generally more known for budget supermarket/dollar-store grade stationary, so I was very wary that I might have another stinker on my hands, but coming in under CA$6,  this was a welcome bargain I’ll likely take advantage of again soon. 

After doing a little research online, it’s not clear to me whether CTG is doing much to promote these. They did have their own display in the shop I bought from, but there is no specific site where these can be found otherwise. I do not know what sort of distribution these books see. Might be hard to find, but if you see these and wonder whether they’d be helpful, I’d say give them a try.

For the Aesthetics: Indigenous Models in Pop Fashion

A few weeks ago, a famous Bangladeshi fashion and lifestyle influencer shared on her page how she feels awkward when indigenous staff at beauty salons speak among themselves in their native language. This influencer is one of the many people who have over the years shared their disapproval of indigenous service staff speaking in their own native language, calling it unprofessional and impolite.

The CTG Hill Tracts in Bangladesh are home 12 different ethnic communities, who are commonly known as upojatis (sub-class/tribe). The term has recently been rejected by scholars and activists due to the violence the term indicates – a process of reducing these communities to sub-tribes and its people to sub-humans. Over the past two decades, many indigenous communities have been displaced, its members abducted and murdered to make space for tourism. Bangali settler colonialism has not merely caused bloodshed but continues to systematically oppress these people in their native lands and in other parts of Bangladesh.[1]

The fact that most of the service staff at beauty salons in Dhaka are indigenous women is not due to them holding some secret knowledge of beauty (they are exoticised and mystified for their beautiful skin; indigenous skincare products are popular among Bangalis). It’s specifically because over the years, the racialised workings of the state has naturalised limited positions for indigenous people to hold, beyond which the Bangali nation is unable to imagine them. Needless to say, class implication plays a vital part in the intersection of gender, class, ethnicity and race. The more privileged of the kind receive education and land amazing jobs, but that is only a handful.[2]

While reading the chapter by Rachel Alicia Griffin, Black Feminist Spectatorship as a source of interdisciplinary and intersectional approach to studying Black women in media sparked my interest to think about Bangladeshi indigenous women. While their media representation is very limited (I personally have not encountered them on television, at least not as leading roles), recently I have seen indigenous women modelling for a business on Facebook. The brand does a very elitist and invasive representation of Bangali culture, rickshaw painting on fabrics is one of their many products (as is common with Bangladeshi popular fashion). It is interesting to note how carefully curated the model line-up is – it is one of the ways tokenism works through tropes of inclusion (in this case, indigenous women being models for a capitalist venture that profits off by seeming woke while using indigenous women for aesthetic purposes). Indigenous inclusion in popular fashion basically adds the exotic element.

But this is just my two cents on the matter, and I am, in the end, a Bangali. I wonder how long till, let’s say, we have a Chakma Feminist Spectatorship to unveil these layers, many of which are possibly invisible to me due to my own privilege.
