As promised, here's that separate post about the BMW art cars. Well, I elected to make a reblog of this post, but I feel like it can count as a separate post. Or rather, separate posts, because even discounting the more unofficial entries in the series there are too many for just one. Whatever.
Please hop on down the Read More and vote your favorite! Don't worry, I'm not gonna make another essay down there :)
BMW Art cars, pt.1: The Race Cars
1. Alexander Calder's 1975 BMW 3.0 CSL
Well, rather, French racer and auctioneer Hervé Poulain's, but I think when I write that you understand that I mean the man asked American sculptor Alexander Calder, most famous for hanging shit off of shit hanging off of shit hanging off a roof, to paint up the car he would race at the 24h of Le Mans achieving the historical placement of broke down. The following year Calder followed suit by dying, which I'm sure did wonders to the value of this car.
And I'm delighted to announce that yes, that enormous rear wing was included in the roadgoing 3.0 CSL, it being homologation version of the racecar. And I mean "was included", not "was on" - it was so damn big BMW wasn't even allowed to sell the car with it, so buyers just found it in the trunk for them to install.
2. Frank Stella's 1976 BMW 3.0 CSL
BMW seemed rather fond of this idea of racing at Le Mans with a BMW 3.0 CSL a famous artist painted up (well, drew up a livery for anyway, this and Calder's designs were materially painted by a BMW guy), seeing as the next year there Frank Stella was making a livery inspired by "the technical basis of the object itself", hence the graph paper-looking base.
This one, however, was in a faster class. Like, 750 horsepower fast. If y'all think that is any less than jaw dropping for 1976, please have another look at the power figures of the two fastest street cars of a decade later. Cars that were significantly heavier than this.
3. Roy Lichtenstein's 1977 BMW 320i Turbo
Third time being the charm, this "landscape-reflecting" 3-series snagged a win! Well, in its class, anyway - but a 9th place overall is nothing to scoff at when it comes to Le Mans. And Roy Lichtenstein is no one to scoff at when it comes to the art world, either. Nor spelling, really, but I think I've done it. R-o-y, right?
Ah, tho, the good ol' days when turbochargers were so cool and exotic even racecars would brag about them. Because this wasn't a "we're making a 320i Turbo racecar to sell the 320i Turbo road car" kinda thing, the 320i Turbo was the racecar version of the 320i. Like "it's the turbocharged one, i.e. the racecar". Makes sense they'd push this idea, of course, having been the first in Europe to put that tech in road cars with this car's predecessor a couple years prior (ʞγʞγi).
4. Andy Warhol's 1979 BMW M1
The yearly cadence dropped with this one, unlike the weight, which Warhol's paintbrush upped by six kilos (for the yankees, that's 53 hamburgers). Not that it stopped the thing from reaching sixth overall, though, so whatever.
Fitting though, isn't it, that an artist as eclectic as Andy Warhol would end up working on the car BMW broke into Lamborghini to steal the means of production of. That's not, like, a metaphor, or hyperbole, for those wondering. But hearing details of such stories is what the follow button's for, isn't it ;)
5. Michael Jagamara Nelson's 1989 BMW M3 Group A
Michael Jagamara Nelson, of the Aboriginal Walrpiri tribe, paint-stakingly (har har) created a representation of an areal view of a landscape over the course of seven days - and said he included a kangaroo and possum as well! :)
This second generation of the 3 series was the first to receive an M version, i.e. a high strung, sport version tuned by BMW Motorsport, legally separate entity from BMW that created the aforementioned M1, hence the name: M (sorry, ///M) version of the 3 series, M3. The M1 was not a version of anything, it was just the first-
wait.
Is this...
Are all these descriptions...
Awh, I'm doing another essay again! Dammit!
6. Ken Done's 1989 BMW M3 Group A
Nope. Not doing it! I am shutting right up, and you can just look at (look for?) the parrots and parrot fish this Aussie guy painted on there seeking to represent modern Australia (well, 1989 Australia at least), bask in the immaculate good vibes and not wade through any more of my ramblings. There. Isn't that much better?
7. Sandro Chia's 1992 BMW M3 GTR Racing Prototype
A car is a coveted object in our society. All eyes are upon it. This car reflects their gaze. -Sandro Chia, roughly
Yep. That's all. And if you think that's paring down the descriptions:
8. Jenny Holzer's 1999 BMW V12 LMR
Why even say anything about the paintjob when saying things is what the paintjob does? More specifically:
MONOMANIA IS A PREREQUISITE OF SUCCESS
YOU ARE SO COMPLEX YOU DON’T RESPOND TO DANGER
LACK OF CHARISMA CAN BE FATAL
In the headrest, WHAT URGE WILL SAVE US NOW THAT SEX WON’T? [editor's note: infodumping?]
and, most importantly,
youtube
9. Jeff Koons' 2010 BMW M3 GT2
Yep, the guy who made the Haruhi'd balloon dog (or, well, the guy whose entirely uncredited workshop did) and a series of works that was literally just porn of him and his wife also came up with this livery which he claims to be representing "a stream of life energy" or thereabouts.
Given what I've gathered to be the platform's sentiment towards the dude, I feel like this is a good moment to kindly ask y'all to separate the art from the artist with your vote. For one, if you lament that the people working under these artists deserve more credit, then surely you should want better for their work than being spat upon by proxy. For two, casting your vote based on the artist would just be unfair if there are artists here you know nothing about. For all you know they could be even bigger assholes! I mean, what do you know about Michael Jagamara Nelson, besides that he comes after "Ooh-e-ooh-a-ah"? (Well, we also know that about Koons, but I digress.) And for three, the artistry involved in the creation of the work may be completely separate from how well it works on the car. A very bad artwork can still be a very good livery.
And vice versa.
To be clear, this is a call for impartiality rather than an outright support for Koons' car. Though I must say I like how it screams "fast" and uses bright colors in a way that makes it recognizable even from a helicopter. Which, conveniently, were also goals of the next artist.
10. John Baldessari's 2016 BMW M6 GTLM
I mean. That's not not doing that. But, you know, most Art Cars seek to represent something - be it about their own backgrounds, the context the cars are in, or the very cars themselves. Does this car do that? Does Baldessari's work represent the car it's on?
There was also this one made with AR in 2017 but I did not include it on principle because I do not believe digital swirls you need an app to see can woo their way into counting as a livery.
what do you like about cars?
I think you knew, upon asking this, that I could only ever have answered with either an ironic one-liner or a dozen-part novel. And unfortunately, this is already the second line, so novel it is. So then, without any further ado than the literal half year that’s gone by since this was asked, let's go.
1. Engineering matters
At the end of last year (aka when I started writing this, yikes) my dear old iPhone 6S moved on to a new home because it simply wasn't keeping up with me anymore. (And again, I was using an iPhone 6S in 2023. If I say a phone is too slow, it's too slow.) I had plenty of criteria for the replacement: a smallish screen not overboard on resolution, ideally a physical media control button and/or vibration toggle, repairability, a FUCKING AUX JACK... Something like the Sony Xperia 10, whose only real issue is marketing so trash you've only just now learned Sony never stopped making phones.
And yet...
This fancy wallpapers-sporting foldable is a Motorola RAZR 5G, a phone whose too-big screen already broke (though at the edge due to adhesive issues) and those who dared try warn repairing it will be as hard as phone repairs get. Why the fuck did I buy this? Well, because it has something more important than the aux jack, proper sizing, and good cameras: it made me go “That’s so cool!”, and when’s the last time a phone made you say that? It's the cusp of a new technology, and whether it becomes the future of phones, a future of phones, or just a weird footnote, it is an island of interesting in a sea of boring. And sadly, even this island is rapidly sinking. The drive for new form factors has already boiled down to the same two phones and their evolution is sinking into the usual millimetric proportion tweaking, camera rearranging, touchscreen expanding, case material switching, fingerprint sensor moving, and spec improvements not even manufacturers can come up with use cases for. I mean, seriously, how does the iPhone 15 differ from a software-updated iPhone X (which is apparently not pronounced "x", so I guess the iPhone Twitter)? Nothing is new. Nothing is tackled differently. The user experience does not differ. And why should it, when iPhone users will get a new one out of habit anyway and many are so tech illiterate moving a button could hospitalize them? Five generation newer and 150% faster are numbers you basically have to trust, because they don't make a difference that matters.
But in cars? 150% faster will matter alright. Even just looking at it. Cars are a visceral experience to even witness, let alone ride in or drive, and the frantic engineering pursuits for performance and overall capability actually have impactful real world implications beyond "some pockets will bulge 1mm less". And their engineering involves so many fields that there’s always a breakthrough going on somewhere - which leads to another reason their engineering is so interesting: there’s simply so much of it that anyone interested in engineering will find something for them, no matter their level or sector of expertise! Interested in mechanics? Well, obviously you’ll have a field day! Aerodynamics? Don't even get me started! Electronics? You're getting more goods by the year! It spread from engine management to safety assists to infotainment to ergonomic adjustments to even suspension and aerodynamics! Sound design? Even just working on the way engines sound is a profession of its own, let alone making these barrels of metal and glass propelling themselves at triple digit speeds through hundreds of explosions a second things you can comfortably have a conversation in - and that's not even mentioning horns and chimes! Hi-Fi? We’ve spent most of a century trying to get concert hall sound from a tiny tin can where everyone sits off-center and everything bumps and shakes around and you have maybe room for two components* a third the normal size and speakers can only be in a handful of places you wouldn’t want them which may well be the next room over**!
And this is just engineering.
*Like everything in the car world, there are exceptions to that
**For those unfamiliar, subwoofers, the speakers dedicated to, indeed, sub-bass, due to their frequent humongousness are often installed in the trunk.
#sorry for taking *checks post* HOW MANY DAYS???#i just kept getting busied up#pesky life#know that any single day i am not posting on here someone has physically prevented me from doing so#bmw art cars#bmw 3.0 csl#bmw 3 series#bmw e21#bmw 320i turbo#bmw m1#bmw e30#bmw m3 group a#bmw e36#bmw m3 gtr#bmw e92#bmw m3 gt2#bmw 6 series#bmw f13#(TIL the code for the last gen of 6 series)#bmw m6 gtlm#hopefully people don't see the amount of tags and get scared off thinking there is going to be one car for each lmao

When it comes to racing, shedding weight is one of the best ways to get faster lap times and dominate the track. Contrary to popular belief, weight savings outweigh power upgrades as it permits better handling and grip in corners making the car more agile. The VR Aero CSL trunk saves about 20lbs compared to your factory trunk while featuring stunning looks.
The 2×2 twill carbon fiber weave paired with the glossy clear coat makes the CSL trunk a true piece of art. Since the trunk is already equipped with a clear coat finish, it can be exposed or painted to match the aura of your vehicle. Nicknamed the 'Batmobile', which has now become the almost official model designation, the original @bmw 3.0 CSL is a mythological car that has graced countless bedrooms walls of the young while featuring prominently in automotive bucket lists of the young-at-heart. Based on the standard 3.0 CS model, the CSL spec received significant engine and running-gear upgrades making the discrete 2-door supremely quicker, sharper and lighter, hence the L, which stood for leicht, German for light. However, it was the aggressively styled aerodynamic package that resulted in the Batmobile moniker. All 110 CSLs produced adorned a large front air dams, fins running along the top of the front fenders, a spoiler on the trailing edge of the roof, and an unmissable rear wing. Interestingly, the rear wing was never installed at the factory, but it was left in the trunk in three parts for the owner to install, as during time of production wings were illegal on German roads. 2019 BMW M4 CS Specs And Price
2019 BMW M4 CS Specs And Price
2019 BMW M4 CS Specs And Price– Released in 2013, the 4 Series is one particular of the company’s most new nameplates and marked the end of the 3 Series Coupe, which it substituted in the brand’s catalog. Reader’s Corner: Sakhir Orange BMW M3 F80 Project
David Zhou, a reader of BMWBLOG, is sharing with us his Sakhir Orange BMW M3 F80 Project which received a wide range of performance upgrades.
As we all know, the F80 generation is coming to an end and we are eagerly awaiting for the G80 M3 to come out. For me, this give me an opportunity to make something very special with the F80 as most modifications are out for the car already so that I have so many options to play around with when making this build.
Having owned a Dinan tuned M235i in the past, this is my first true M car. I have always dreamed about owning a M3 not only due to its legendary history but also how aggressive the F80 looks compares to its competitors. As to choosing between a M3 or a M4, to me it was a no brainer as M3 looks much more masculine with the wide hips where as the M4 looks more fluid, also, having four doors makes it very practical for daily use, this M3 was not going to be garage queen.
By the time I decided to purchase a M3, BMW Canada was no longer taking new orders so I had to do my research and see what I can find out of the existing stock. Luckily, I was able to find this 2017 F80 M3 at BMW Sherbrook with the combination I was looking for – ZUP package, DCT, Sakhir Orange exterior with full merino leather interior. And the best part, I am the first owner as this was a showroom demo.
Not long after getting the car, I got in touch with Ryan at IND Distribution and we started making a list of the upgrades that I wanted to do to make this car into a showcar level. Matt at RW Carbon was kind enough to work with me on getting most of the exterior carbon pieces for the car and Prapan at NVD Autosports for the interior carbon pieces. Along the way, I also dealt with other vendors online that helped me to make this project possible.
Most of the parts were installed at the Budds BMW dealership and Budds collision for the paint job with the help of Stephen, Paolo, Ian and the team. Stephen helped me with my Dinan parts for the M235i and we went with Dinan again for this M3 as well. Of course, with an investment like this, we can’t skip out on protection as well, so a full XPEL wrap was done by Sekanskin to give that extra satin look and protection.
Going forward, I am looking forward to doing a bit more for the interior, doing a bit more personal touches to it and make it even more unique. I am also looking forward to taking it to different car shows to share the love with fellow BMW drivers, with a build like this, on the road and sharing the love/displaying it with fellow drivers is where it belongs.
There are so many people that are involved in this project, I just want to give a quick shootout to all my online vendors – Active Autowerke, BlackboxMyCar, Dinmann, EAS, IND, JBSpeed, ModBargin, NVD Autosport, RW Carbon, Studio RSR. Also to my local shops – Alloy Wheel Repair Specialists, BMW Sherbrooke, Budds’ Collision Services Ltd., Budds BMW Oakville, Fanshawe Motors, Scotty’s Shine Shop, Sekanskin.

Hotter BMW M2 To Carry CS Suffix; Production Starting March 2020
It’s expected to serve as a last hurrah for the current-generation 2 Series / M2.
By nicknaming the next-gen 2 Series the “Drift Machine,” BMW has effectively confirmed the coupe will retain the tail-happy rear-wheel-drive layout. It also likely means there will be a new M2 at some point in the next decade, but the current one still hasn’t been dialed to the maximum. Just a couple of days ago we shared a batch of spy shots with an amped-up M2 prototype, with the rumor mill pointing towards a future CS or CSL derivative.
Fast forward to present day, our friends at BMW Blog claim the model in question will go by the name of M2 CS. Their sources have revealed production is going to begin in March 2020, so we’re expecting an official reveal to take place either by the end of next year or early next decade.
If you can’t wait until then, the M2 Competition is totally worth buying:
The decision to slap the “CS” badge on the car’s trunk lid makes perfect sense taking into account BMW already has the M4 CS and M3 CS in its growing portfolio of performance cars. Details about the forthcoming M2 CS are murky at this point, but reports are indicating engineers will shave weight over the current M2 Competition, which tips the scales at 3,655 lbs (1,658 kg) with the automatic transmission and 3,600 lbs (1,632 kg) with the manual.
It wouldn’t be too far-fetched to assume power will be up from the 405 horsepower (302 kilowatts) and 406 pound-feet (551 Newton-meters) of torque you get from the S55 engine underneath the M2 Competition’s hood.
The new BMW M2 CS is expected to serve as a last hurrah for the current-gen 2 Series and will allegedly be offered for only about a year as a limited-run edition. Time will tell whether there will also be a CLS version, but we wouldn’t count on it.

New Post has been published on https://www.vividracing.com/blog/announcing-new-products-specials-and-info/introducing-the-new-agency-power-carbon-fiber-trunk-and-hood-for-bmw-m2/
Now Available: Agency Power Carbon Fiber Trunk and Hood for BMW M2
As the BMW M3 has gotten larger and larger over time, enthusiasts have been craving for another small M car. When BMW released the M2, enthusiasts, included us, fell in love with it. We actually just built one recently for SEMA that featured a whole bunch of Agency Power carbon fiber parts that weren’t available to the public at the time. Since then Agency Power has completely finished developing these parts and they’re now available to the public. These parts consist of a double or single sided carbon fiber hood, and a double or single sided CSL style trunk.
Back when BMW released the M3 CSL, pretty much everyone fell in love with the style of the trunk. Since then many BMW enthusiasts have installed CSL style trunks on their cars. The CSL style trunk features a large, built-in duckbill style wing which not only looks awesome but should also provide downforce at high speeds. The single-sided version of this trunk uses a lightweight composite on the underside and carbon fiber on the top side. This helps keep cost down while still providing a lightweight design. For the enthusiasts who want nothing but the best, Agency Power has the dual-sided version. This version uses carbon fiber on both the top and bottom part of the trunk for the strongest and most lightweight construction possible.
With the release of the E9X M3, BMW introduced a large bulge in the hood. Once again many BMW enthusiasts fell in love with how this looked, and now tons of 3-series owners have an aftermarket budged hood on their car. Agency Power incorporated this bulge into their design as well as three large vents which will help extract heat from inside the engine bay. This will lower intake air temperatures, coolant temperatures, and help prevent heat soaking. Just like the trunk, the hood is available in a single-sided and dual-sided version.
We featured these parts, as well as a ton of other Agency Power aero parts on the M2 we built for SEMA. Not only will these parts help reduce the weight of your M2 and keep engine temperatures under control, they look absolutely amazing.
