I've been reading CS Forester's Hornblower series, and in several of the volumes, burned bread crumbs boiled in water was used as a substitute for the Captain's coffee.

Was that an actual thing?

Yes it was; it also gets mentioned in Patrick O'Brien's "Aubrey-Maturin" series, where IIRC it was made from ship's biscuit (i.e. hardtack) toasted almost black then smashed to crumbs and stirred up in boiling water along with sugar, molasses or treacle and I suspect a generous tot of issue rum.

The concoction was called "Scotch coffee" - nothing to do with Irish Coffee made using Scotch, which here is usually called Gaelic Coffee anyway.

I think it got the name in the same way as toasted cheese - which also appears in the "A-M" series and even the movie - was called "Welsh Rabbit". These might have been racial slurs (the Scots are stingy, the Welsh are dim) but equally they might have been fancy names for poverty food so they could be mentioned in public without embarrassment.

Burnt-toast coffee has no appeal whatsoever, but toasted cheese on not-burnt toast is rather good, especially if it's a well-flavoured cheese. A dash each of Tabasco and Worcester sauce doesn't hurt either, and if you use a dusting of cayenne and a splash of Watkin's Mushroom Ketchup, that's even more in-period.

What Should I Know About Assisted Living?

Almost everyone awaits retirement as a time to relax and enjoy life. However, often we get too busy with daily responsibilities to fully enjoy the free time we've worked so hard to earn. That's where a change to assisted living can make a big difference.

Although Massachusetts assisted living communities tend to be very well regulated and of unusually good quality, there are certainly big differences between them. People who are familiar with many communities tend to prefer those that stand out by putting much more emphasis on helping keep residents active, busy, and involved than most other facilities. This philosophy can often be manifested by a very warm and personal feeling that is easily conveyed to prospective residents who stop by to speak to current residents and ask about their feelings about living in New Horizons. In fact, one of the most important considerations for anyone considering assisted living is to speak directly to existing residents of any particular facility.

Most seniors who consider this shift to assisted living are very concerned with maintaining their dignity and independence. Their ages usually range between 65 and 100 years, with an average of 80 to 80 years. Moving to a good residential environment with quality accommodations, good neighbors, and a solid program can often be a great benefit to older people who have previously lived alone. In fact, very often "they come back to life once they no longer have to worry about the burdens of living alone."

One of the most common sources of confusion for those seeking to retire is the challenge of correctly understanding the difference between independent retirement and assisted living. The first is typically a residential apartment living arrangement where the elderly share a common space, but can maintain their independence with little or no help. Typically, the best facilities provide three meals a day for all residents, plus utilities, some transportation, housekeeping, etc., as well as reservation assistance, if needed, and a wide variety of social activities. In Massachusetts, communities often combine independent living and assistance options in one facility.

Similar to independent living, assisted living is a housing option for older adults who need help with activities of daily living such as dressing, eating, bathing, wandering, or using the bathroom, but who do not require 24-hour nursing care. They can still live independently with some help, but that assistance is generally necessary on a daily basis. In many ways, assisted living can be viewed as "independent living with an added bonus!"

MA assisted living retirement communities and retirement homes for senior citizens are among the best. Many people deeply seek and appreciate the opportunity to enjoy their "golden years" in a very caring and convenient assisted living environment near Boston, Worcester, Southboro, Hudson, Northborough, Westboro, Framingham and Fitchburg, Marlborough and Woburn, MA. Other well-populated nearby communities with quality assisted living options include Sudbury, Wayland, Wellesley, Waltham, Weston and the other cities along Route MA 128. Often the majority of older people looking in these communities prefer the many benefits of a large community, with the intimacy of a small assisted living home where everyone knows your name.

Assisted living facilities should not be confused with a nursing home, but with a busy Massachusetts retirement community. Most of these communities are non-sectarian senior communities in the Boston area that could offer frequent on-campus religious services and easy access to others. Some include at least weekly Protestant and Jewish services on site and a daily Catholic mass. Enjoying assisted living in the western metropolitan area with elegant, low-cost and affordable gourmet meals can really make a difference in the lives of older people.

Thanks for always helping- I am a junior and need advice. I will barely make 4.3 weighted by the end of junior year (hopefully). Do colleges see my grades for qtr 1 in senior year as I really need a boost? What colleges do you recommend with a 4.3 with excellent extra-curricular's/internship....looking at Engineering or Econ

That GPA is definitely fine. The colleges you're applying to Regular Decision will see your GPA after 1st semester senior year, while the colleges you apply to Early Decision/Early Action will generally only see your junior GPA. This is good to know as you're choosing whether to apply Regular or Early somewhere. Personally I knew my GPA would be higher after 1st sem senior year so I put most of my applications in the regular round.

If you're interested in engineering, some great schools you could check out are Grainger at UIUC, Rochester Institute of Technology, UMD (early action), some of the UC schools, Rose-Hulman, and Virginia Tech(!!!!)! I'm sure other mods will have other suggestions (Penelope?) so feel free to add on!

If you're interested in Econ, you could check out University of Wisconsin, University of Rochester, and Penn State! I think UVA is also really good for Econ.

Northeastern — I always recommend taking a look since they're so different from every other school with the co-op program; it may not be the best ranked or most famous but the program is a great idea and career placement is good

UT Austin — if you're CS/CE/EE it might be wild trying to get in but they do have a pretty good engineering school

Strong winds are then forecast for much of England, Wales and Northern Ireland on Saturday, reaching 70mph in coastal areas and up to 60mph inland. The Met Office’s chief meteorologist Paul Gundersen said further flooding is also possible with rain forecast to fall on already saturated ground. Flooding along parts of the River Severn, which has reached close to its highest levels in some areas, is likely until at least Sunday, the Environment Agency said. A severe “danger to life” flood warning covering the river at the Wharfage in Ironbridge, Shropshire, remains in place on Thursday, while 82 flood warnings and 125 flood alerts had been issued. Storm Jorge, which was named by Spanish meteorological services, is forecast to track across the North West of the UK before clearing on Saturday afternoon. Yellow weather warnings for rain are in place for the North West and South West of England, parts of Wales and Northern Ireland between midday on Friday and 9am on Saturday. The Met Office has also issued a yellow wind warning for a 24-hour period from midday on Saturday covering most of England, Wales, Northern Ireland and south-west Scotland. On Thursday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson declined to say whether he would visit those made homeless by recent flooding. Speaking in central London, he instead focused on how the “massive issue” of flooding “presents an opportunity” for job creation. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has previously accused Mr Johnson of being a “part-time Prime Minister” due to his absence in affected areas. Mr Johnson said on Thursday: “There’s a massive issue about flood defences, and we have put £2.6 billion in and we will be investing another £4 billion. “This is something that is absolutely critical for our country to tackle. England has received over 200 per cent of its average February rainfall, according to the Environment Agency, with some areas experiencing a month’s worth of rain in 24 hours. Toby Willison, executive director of operations at the Environment Agency, said: “Our operational teams continue to work night and day to protect communities alongside the River Severn, which is experiencing record levels. “River levels will remain exceptionally high on the Severn for some time and communities, in particular Shrewsbury, Bewdley, Bridgnorth and Ironbridge, should prepare for potentially ongoing severe flooding.” Operational teams have put up more than 6km of temporary flood barriers across the country and flood defences have protected more than 34,184 properties over the last week.
