Today is National Crown Day 👑
I made this piece back in 2021 (crazy!) and I’m glad it has continued to aid in sparking conversation around TCA and the importance of Natural Hair in the workplace. (When used ethically-plz don’t see this save it and make a post- just share organically unless making a post of multiple pieces of art etc)
My original caption:
All beautiful, all you, all professional.
Studies show that black women with natural styles such as fros, locs, braids etc are perceived as less professional than their straight haired counterparts. Still ridiculous and I hope The Crown Act passes everywhere.
One shouldn't feel the need to straighten their hair for an interview or for every single important event.
Straight hair is fun and awesome but the keyword here is "need" versus a non biased preference.

"SACRED CROWNS"
by Journey Allen
"People will discover the best portion of themselves through their "expression of" and "interaction with" creativity. It's not the level or skill of creation that brings about change. Rather it's the willingness to share the colors and scribbles of ones imagination, and the engagement with the creativity of another, that ultimately brings about the awe inspiring change that we each long to experience at our heart's center." —Journey Allen
Once told she "could never learn to paint well enough to become a professional artist" Journey Allen now operates a thriving art studio in New Orleans’ 7th Ward where she grew up. In 2022 Arts New Orleans invited Journey to join this collaboration with Dove and JOY Collective and create this mural celebrating the CROWN Act—a law prohibiting discrimination based on hair texture and style.

Texas Judge's Ruling on Dreadlocks Raises Questions About CROWN Act Protections
A Texas judge's ruling on dreadlocks raises questions about the effectiveness of the CROWN Act. What are your thoughts? #CROWNAct #HairDiscrimination #BlackLivesMatter #FierceEmpowerment #FierceConfidence #FierceMillennial #TexasTeen
A recent ruling in Texas has sparked renewed conversation about the limitations of the CROWN Act (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair) and its ability to protect against hair discrimination based on race. In the case, a Black teenager was suspended from school for refusing to cut his dreadlocks, which the school deemed a violation of their dress code policy. The judge ruled in…

The Crown Act: The Business of Black Hair
The CROWN Act stands for “Create a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair.” It is a law that prohibits discrimination based on hairstyle and hair texture. On July 3, 2019, California Governor Gavin Newson signed into law the inaugural act, which took effect on January 1, 2020. As of July 2022, twenty states have passed The Crown Act, including New York, making race-based hair discrimination illegal.

In 2017, 3M told me I had to chop off my hair. I have had long hair most of my life. I did cut off more than 4 inches, but refused to chop it all off, sighting 3M's grandfather clause (I started working for them in 2006), as well as religious, and cultural beliefs. Plus, my hair was out of my face, with a hair clip.
Under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, an employee is not required to cut their hair if it opposes their religious beliefs, unless it causes the employer undue hardship.
I am very grateful the Crown Act passed into law in Minnesota.

So Grateful for my beautiful crown, we’ve been through a lot #crownact -Celebrating black hair independence. Let your crown shine and #PasstheCrown Crown Act, -a law prohibiting discrimination against textured hair & protective styles. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been told my hair is unprofessional. 📸1 My Locs especially suffered bad judgement that was uncalled for. 📸2 When I had my Afro I remember a woman at BBC clutching her pearls with alarm as I walked by her in the corridor. As she gathered herself she looked at my hair before giving eye contact. May be it was the perception of black power that frightened her. Maybe she thought I was a student of Angela Davis. Who knows. 📸3 I’d spent hours having my hair braided, to arrive at school & told my hair breaks schools rules & I must take it out immediately. I refused & faces suspension & a whole big drama occurred before they finally conceded with lots of scoffing. 📸4 And then as a youngster someone always wanting to touch my hair & just doing so without asking. #crownday everyday #melaninqueen #blackhair #blackgirlmagic #beyourself (at Brooklyn, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRDV4X6hcGZ/?utm_medium=tumblr

I want to discuss hair, black hair specifically does hair texture discrimination exists yes of course? Just 2 years ago a law in California was the first state to ban discrimination based on one’s natural hair which sounds ridiculous this even had to happen. A few months ago I had a falling out with someone because they’d make comments about my hair & it made me extremely uncomfortable and insecure so I decided to finally tell them and when I did shockingly instead of apologizing and understanding how it made me feel this person played the victim which was truly disappointing. Lately I’ve been getting a lot of messages regarding my hair and people are telling me they don’t like my hair in a certain style. This is extremely triggering and uncomfortable especially if we’re not the same ethnicity. I don’t care how outgoing or bubbly a person might seem please stop giving your unsolicited opinions about what you don’t like my hair or someone else’s. At the end of the day this is my crown, which represents my identity and I’ll choose how to wear it. 🤴🏾 #CrownAct #blackhair #afrohair ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #4chair #healingofblackhair #naturalhair #blacklivesmatter #amplifymelanatedvoices #amplifyblackvoices (at Chicago Downtown) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNIo9MhL5Fh/?igshid=1g8r9z9t8k6yk

Okay, what infuriates me is that these huge companies (Dove, adidas, etc.) have partnered with good organizations to end huge societal problems. That’s not what makes me mad though; what makes me mad is that it took me extensive research and actually doing the programs to learn about it. For example, I only learned that adidas and Estee Lauder were involved with Kode With Klossy (A program, founded by Karlie Kloss, for young women to teach them coding in order to get them interested and involved in the field, therefore giving them more chances of getting a job in it) while I was learning in the program. I find that just completely insane; well-known companies helped it get off the ground, and I only learn about it after I got accepted. Another example, Dove being involved with the CROWN act. Why have I never heard of this before? I learned this on tumblr, actually. I learned it on this site rather than Dove themselves. Here’s my point: these companies seem to have made minimal effort. They could publicize, donate, inform, and instead it’s a one-time thing and I never hear of it again. To these big companies/corporations/whatever, keep on talking about it until it passes. I know you have enough people following.
#they just partner and help one time#and get their pretty name on the website#and then they do nothing else#Kode With Klossy#CROWNAct#i apologize if this sounds ranty and incoherent but im tired and mad#time to actually do my homework
