So Grateful for my beautiful crown, we’ve been through a lot #crownact -Celebrating black hair independence. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been told my hair is unprofessional. 📸1 My Locs especially suffered bad judgement that was uncalled for. 📸2 When I had my Afro I remember a woman at BBC clutching her pearls with alarm as I walked by her in the corridor. As she gathered herself she looked at my hair before giving eye contact. May be it was the perception of black power that frightened her. Maybe she thought I was a student of Angela Davis. Who knows. 📸3 I’d spent hours having my hair braided, to arrive at school & told my hair breaks schools rules & I must take it out immediately. Happy #CrownDay 👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑 Here today marks the first anniversary of the signing of the Crown Act in California. This prohibits discrimination based on hair style, texture, and preference, all based on race. It’s always because of race in the workplace. Since then, laws have also been passed in New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Colorado, Washington and Maryland in addition to municipalities in Cincinnati as well as Montgomery County, Maryland. National Crown Day marks this anniversary as a day of solidarity for human rights. These rights for Black men, women, and children to not fear this discrimination. This discrimination that attacks their beautiful natural hair that they have been entrusted to wear proudly and boldly. To all the people who endure the labor and difficulty to maintain these locks, we hope to have this state stand by you. Let your crown be as free as the wind. Thankfully hairstylists would tell me I only need one once “every six months”. A decade later I realized I didn’t need one at all and would just get blowouts. Finally one day I decided to wash it and just—go. It was frightening but I decided to go out into the world as God made me and my hair. It was the most liberating feeling. Yet why is this STILL an issue? The brainwashing of what “good hair is” still exists. Beauty is a state of being. I am my hair. I can’t say it isn’t. To accept my hair is to accept me. It grows from my scalp! How dare I or anyone deny the importance of its existence. For those who have lost theirs you truly are not your hair! That’s different. Let’s make that the distinction. If you have hair don’t deny your crown its glory. The grass always looks greener on the other side when in actuality the grass is greener WHERE YOU WATER IT! Next: showing up for contract meetings with Caucasians then showing up in client offices, courtrooms- yes, even law offices with my natural hair. This is who I am—beauty, intelligence and love walking with radiant hair full of vitality and the strength of my ancestors. It took me decades to finally unapologetic accept myself as I was created. If I decide to straighten it now it’s not to look like “them” or come out of a phase I’m going through but to just show and enjoy just how real my “shrinkage” is. My hair is versatile, ever evolving, curly & coily plus wavy in a few places by God’s design. I love and embrace it all. You think you just see a big curly Afro when you see it in its “rested” state! I challenge you to look again. There’s length, depth, wisdom of the ages and the life of God in this hair. My hair is good hair! It’s healthy and ever-growing! This post is for anyone having a not so perfect hair day. We all have them but just don’t post them. Enjoy the journey! Be grateful every time you run your fingers through your curls/coils/strands! Happy CROWN Day, friends and neighbors. In two years, 11 states have passed CROWN or something similar. Eleven. Only eleven. Wondering if we need such a thing? Well, I did have a boss ask me if I really thought my hair was "professional." We still see Black kids being kicked out of school and having their hair forcibly cut because they have the nerve to ... have their hair be so clearly, visibly Black. And just the other day, the swim cap designed for Black folks with natural hair was banned for use at the Olympics. Banned because, as far as the rulemakers could figure, "the athletes competing at the international events never used, neither require to use, caps of such size and configuration." Right. Because swimming isn't for the kinky-haired coloreds. Obviously. So do we need the CROWN Act? Oh, it's just hair, right? Yet my hair needs legislation in order to be allowable in all settings. Yep.
