Recently I watched this TED Talk by Hayley Levitt called "Who decides what art means?" Her y'all was very interesting and talked about the two possibilities of how to interpret art. One philosophy is that only the artists intentions are the correct interpretation and the other philosophy is that there is no one intention and it's left up to the observer. Art scholars have taught me to put a message behind my art, and I feel that if the authors intention is ignored, no one will ever hear or accept the message they are trying to send. Just like Art scholars, this TED Talk has showed me that there is much more to art than the beauty it holds

☀  Quarantine  ☂ 2020  ☀
My sister's noticed that I've been stressed the past couple of weeks so she set up a projector in her room and we had a movie and paint night. We started off watching Sleepover, which is my favorite terrible movie from the early 2000s. That movie has not aged well, but it still makes me laugh. I had started the evening thinking I would paint too, but I mostly ended up as a model for my sister. (You can see the painting above.) After watching Sleepover, we didn't want the night to end so we transitioned into watching another fan favorite: Miss Congeniality. It was a great time and I will always appreciate late-night film experiences because it always ends up with my sister and I discussing themes of sexuality, femininity, and cinematic tropes. I'll be sure to watch some more movies while in quarantine as a way to destress!

“The Same Sky Overarches Us All” is an art exhibition by Lia Halloran that is currently being showcased at the University of Maryland Art Sociology Galley. In her exhibition, Halloran explores the roles that early women astronomers have played in modern astronomy. Halloran used cyanotypes to examine how “perception, time, and scale inform the human desire to understand the world and our emotional and psychological place within it.”
I found this exhibition very intriguing. The pieces were created using a printing process that resulted in a beautiful blue. The eerie/interstellar sounding music in the background was chilling, especially when viewing the cyanotypes of womens’ silhouettes.

Convocation, August 29, Clarice
This event was inspiring because of the slideshow that asked us to lift up our lights to questions.  It made me realize how similar we all are, and how we all have our own goals.  This event was a way to get amped up for the upcoming school year and to make us feel welcomed to UMD.  The large amount of people there was a real representative of our big scholars community.

I went to see Kyle Kogut’s False Monarchy exhibition in Stamp Gallery. At first glance it looked to me like merely an exhibition about religion and occultism in America. While the exhibit does feature occult symbolism, it had art pieces by the artist in response to heavy industrialization in America for the false idea of economic growth. His exhibition is a commentary of his own experience growing up in the working class with multiple large poster paintings, sculptures, and installations of televisions. The larger paintings had the most obvious occult symbolism and were also simple in black and white but were also very detailed upon closer inspection. I thought it was an interesting and different approach to themes of class and labor as well as marketing and propaganda in America as it added a unique element of occult imagery and mortality. The exhibit could also be viewed with a soundscape as well as with written poetry that was collected into folders.

For this pentathlon event, I watched the movie “The Core”, about a group of scientists who travel to the center of the earth to restart its core. The science behind this movie is complete unfeasable, but the movie was nevertheless still entertaining with multiple twists and turns that keep you on your feet

The Visit was a play I had seen with my friends and it was very different from anything I had expected. This play was shown at the Clarice so it featured fellow students which was a new feeling for me. It was interesting that they could perform like this on the weekends then I see them in class the next day. The play discussed slightly sensitive topics such as justice, prostitution, and betrayal. However, I enjoyed the characters and the humor of it all. I was surprised at how nicely the play was put together and hope to see more in the future.

On Thursday, May 2nd, from 6:30-8:30 pm in the CCC, the Arts Advisory Board (AAB) held their last coffeehouse of the semester. The event was two-pronged: there was both a music and a painting aspect. Although there was a small turnout, the event was still fun and I thought those who showed up were happy to be there. This event really tried to target those in the Arts Scholars Program, which is why water coloring and karaoke were chosen as the fine arts that people could participate in. In the past, we have had success with both of these topics, but I think because of the location that we were placed and being so close to final exams, most people did not attend in the numbers we were hoping for.

This weekend, I went to see the Forward Motion Dance Company’s Spring Showcase. I really enjoyed it. My favorite piece was called, “Dont Shoot,” and was set to a poem performed by William Lohier pertaining to the topic of gun violence in schools. It was an incredibly powerful piece. They really expressed their frustration and fear that accompanies the threat of gun violence that many students have been forced to become accustomed to. I thought it was really captivating how they used light and shadow to add an extra element to all their pieces. This was especially true in their piece named, “Sweet Dreams,” where they were all cast in an eerie red lighting. I also enjoyed their song choices. I thought they perfectly embodied their dances. I completely enjoyed their showcase and look forward to seeing what they do in the future.

“The Visit”, October 5th at the Clarice
This play was very special. It served a purpose in making its audience feel out of place and uncomfortable. The point of this was for the audience to feel like the main character felt in his own town. Seeing this play inspired me because before this, I thought of art as mostly physical; observing the art of theatre taught me that art forms such as this one has an even more powerful and secretive way of sharing a message. It gave me a new perspective and appreciation for at forms such as theatre and dance.

☜ September 26th, 2019  ☟  The CCC  ☞
Last Thursday, I was apart of Art Advisory Board’s first Art House. We lead different crafty exercises including lanyard making, friendship bracelets, and bead creatures. The picture above shows me making a turtle (Herbert.) I lead the presentation on friendship bracelets and taught some people how to make some with cool designs! It was a lot of fun.
(I was going to write this as presentation initially, but I’m saving my second presentation for the John Mulaney comedy show!)

In October, the Arts Advisory Board hosted an Artober Spookhouse where students were able to perform. The performances ranged from singing, piano, guitar, and violin playing, to literature presentation. My favorite performance of the night was Joshua Qiu’s classical violin piece. I have not seen many violin performances by students and I really enjoyed being able to see different art forms of students inside and outside of the Arts Scholars program. This is a photo of the Mario Kart contestant in the costume contest held at the event!

January 29, Joker
The joker had an impact on the way I view poverty, general attitude of society, and mental health.  The many visceral reactions I felt through the shootings and fights had a serious effect on my, the way a well composed film should.  The way we hated the Joker for what he does, yet feel pity and some understanding for this murderer tapped into my own thoughts on morals.  There were some beautiful shots through the film, usually of him dancing in an interesting composition (like up the stairs) that are inspiring to me as a photographer.

I saw Mat Kerekes perform (second pic) with Jetty Bones (first pic) as one of the openers. This show was on 3/8/2019 and took place at Songbyrd in DC. There was not a show title but it was to showcase his new album, “Ruby.” Mat Kerekes is an incredible and talented artist who is also the frontman for a band called Citizen, and I saw him perform his side/solo project. Jetty Bones is a solo project by Kelc Galluzzo, and she focuses on self expression and creating a safe space for everyone. This was such a fun concert because their individual solo works are so creative and are acoustic, and Mat’s acoustic work is beautiful, and Citizen’s full-band sets are generally heavier. It was interesting to see this change of pace! This inspired me to get more into writing my own songs, which is applicable to my Arts Scholars workshop.

For this pentathlon event, I decided to draw one of my favorite villains. It took a couple days but I drew it outside as a form of art therapy. It was a fun way to relax and get in touch with nature while working on art. This helped relieve some anxiety and stress, as it was able to take my mind off my troubles and focus on drawing.

Terps After Dark: Craft Night series.
This event was related to arts because we created Glow in the Dark mason jars. It was very fun because it was something I had never done before. It inspired me because I’d love to do it again, even in a series to make larger art with multiple jars. This reminds me of the frame making because it was also an arts & crafts event.
