Fic Extract

Judy stood on the pavement, staring up at the quaint little townhouse settled a few steps above ground level. V’s heart was in her mouth. The journey had been great, but this was the destination-the end goal- and it’d only now dawned on her what that actually entailed.

“This is it! Cute huh? Looks like they’ve re-painted...” Judy said, spinning around and gesturing to the house like some cute little salesperson. She paused, spotting the look on V’s face. “Wuh-oh! You doin' all right V?” She shook her head. Judy giggled.

She stood eyes transfixed on the steps to the door. They almost seemed to grow taller the longer she stared. Judy stepped in front of her, breaking her eye line.

“V?” Judy asked, eyes now filled with worry. Perhaps thinking her mind had ghosted.

“I’m here, I’m fine... I’m. Freakin’ nervous...”

“Don’t be! Just be yourself, ya gonk!”

“You sure? They gonna like me?”

“Totally. Let’s go!” Judy yelled, excitement spilling from her lungs. She raced up the steps and rang the buzzer, spinning around and gesturing excessively with both hands. Her enthusiasm was contagious; part of her was excited to meet Judy’s Grandmother. Their brief text chat seemed to go off smoothly and she was keen to meet the people who practically raised her. V joined Judy on the steps just as the door swung open, and Ainara Alvarez appeared in the threshold.

“Ranita! Mi ángel!” She beamed, bringing Judy into a big hug. The height difference was noticeably, Aimara stretching up to kiss her cheeks. “Oh, it’s so good to see you, mi amor!” She rubbed her back, eye closed in happiness.

“Mamá Abuela! It’s been too long! Te he extrañado mucho!” Judy said lovingly, as V’s soft proving her the translation- ‘I’ve missed you so much!’. After an extended hug, Judy added, “OK... OK!” Urging her along. She relented, instead setting her sights on V. On instinct, she raised a hand a waved feebly.

“Hi... Abuela. Lovely to finally meet you!”

“Oooh, you call me Abeula!” She said beaming, “Gracias, V! Welcome to mi casa! Come here!” She pulled V into an equally long embrace. A very warm welcome.

They went through into the sitting room, removing their shoes in the hallway. V grabbed Judy’s arm and whispered in her ear.

“Wait, wait... Ranita is ‘Little Frog’? Is that translation, right?” Judy blushed, and V squeaked. “Oh my F’in G! That is adorable!”

“It’s her pet name for me! I like it!”

“I LOVE it!” V cried, hysterically, “Did you like hanging out on lily pads? Eating bugs?” she teased, getting a rise out of her increasingly deep flush on her cheeks.

“No, you gonk! But I did used to hop around a lot as a little girl...” V smiled, feeling her own cheeks burning now. “I also could not keep still- proper fidget bum!” Still is, V thought, smile widening. “Plus, I was slimy in the sense that I was hard to catch and would wriggle out of situations easily...” V beamed, stifling a full-blown laughing fit.

“Where’s Papá Abuelo?” Judy said changing the subject out of spite.

“Where you think he is? Al lado, tinkering away como siempre.” Abuela said tutting- next door, as usual. “Will you go fetch him Ranita?”

“Sure! V can stay here!” Judy said with a wink. Payback for the teasing. V’s eyes grew wide, a desperate plea to not leave her on her own, she was her strength, she couldn’t abandon her so soon!

"Don’t leave me little frog!" She whispered giggling. But she did, whipping off down the corridor out of sight. In a moment, the sound of a door closing.

Abeula was pottering about in the kitchen, tea towel draped over her arm and humming to herself. “V!” She called suddenly.

“Yes, Abeula?” She was getting used to calling her that, felt only right under the circumstances. She stood up and leant on the island that abutted the open kitchen. “You have a beautiful home by the way...” she added, admiring the warm vibes and cosy, consistent colour matching throughout.

“Gracias, Querida!”-dear one. She beamed, holding a spoon out towards her, “Taste this and tell me what you think.” V reached out and wrapped her mouth around the spoon.

Her mouth erupted; a smooth but lively flavour, chock full of a perfect blend of herbs and seasoning, each one playing off the other. A tangy blast of sweet sour and with a subtle spicy after kick.

“Fuck me!” V reacted after swallowing the best thing she’d ever tasted. Ainara roared with laughter.

“Good then?”

“Hell yeah! Blew my brains out! Tastiest thing I’ve ever had!”

“Oh please...”

“No, I’m serious! What was it!”

“The filling for the Empanadas, old family recipe. Plus, we’ve got some chilli, croquetas, and some albondigas!” V’s mouth fell open and began salivating as her eyes spied the spread around the kitchen island.

“Oh gosh, Abuela, I hope you’ve not gone to too much trouble for us!” V said, feeling a slight pang of guilt, which admittedly were overpowered by the rumbles of her ravenous stomach.

“Nonsense! Es lo menos que puedo hacer”-It’s the least I can do. She was so sweet, it warmed V’s heart.

She heard to slam of a door and approaching footsteps. “Hey!” Judy smiled, strutting over to her. “You being good?” she winked.

“I am. Your grandma has been cooking up a storm for us!”

“No doubt, I’m starvin’” Judy beamed, and turned to shout down the corridor “Yo! You fall down out there old man?” She said playfully. A fairly spry but clearly elderly man entered the room, beaming.

“I was putting on my slippers!” he called out waving at Judy in a dismissive gesture.

“Yeah, super slowly!” She retorted like a bratty teenager. He approached her and grabbed her playfully, scrunching his fist into her hand.

“Honestly, the mouth on this one...” he said casually to V as if talking to an old friend. Then realised he wasn’t.

“Oh! Who do we have here then?” He beamed, holding out his hand, “Hector Alvarez, pleasure to meet you!” V reached out to shake his hand, but a yell from the kitchen interrupted them.

“Dios mío! Hector! I’ve been through this already!” Ainara yelled waving a wooden spatula. Realisation dawned on him.

“Ah you must be the new compañera?”-partner. “You treatin’ our chica right?”

“Madre de Dios! Hector, this is V! I told you! We like V!”

“Oh, V! Welcome! So good to finally meet you!” He cried, pulling her into a big hug, whispering in her ear, “I knew who you were, I just love winding her up!” He chuckled, kissing both her cheeks and rubbing her face. “You’re pretty! You know she was pretty, mi amor?” He called to Ainara, smirking at both youngsters.

“Yes, Judy sent us pictures!” she cried, stirring a pot of something delicious. This was new information to V- the pictures, not the delicious food.

“Uh... Pictures, what pictures are these?” Turning to Judy, who was chuckling, which faltered as she knew she’d been rumbled. V twisted her head, awaiting an explanation.

“Uh... well... You know when we went to dinner in Japantown... sushi place?”

“Yeah...” V said cautiously, vaguely remembering and desperately recalling the events that transpired.

“And uh... you know when bit into that huge dumpling?”

“Yes!” V said, not liking where this was going.

“Well, when you were recovering from the overuse of spice powder, I snapped a quick one then!” Judy said, pulling out her phone and swiping a little until she held it up- a pic of V choking hard, red-faced and eyes shut, crying and Judy, taking a winky-faced selfie.

“Are you kidding me!” V cried, “You sent that!” Her face began to heat.

“Yeah, was hilarious!”

“But not my best moment though...”

“We enjoyed it!” Hector laughed. V was so embarrassed, before remembering.

“Pictures. There were more than one?”

“Uh, yeah... there was one, where you’d fallen asleep while watching a flick and you looked so sweet, so I sent that over too...” She held out her phone and showed the pic. She was curled up on Judy’s coach, leaning on Judy’s shoulder.

“OK... that one I like.”

“And I took one in the air!” And she showed the selfie that they took on the Dirigible on route. Both looking super happy sat by the window, arms around each other. It made V smile.

“OK...” she said, cooling off, “You’re off the hook!” she said sticking her tongue out and kissing her nose. Ainara was watching and beamed at them both.

“Ok you love birds, dinner is ready, help me set the table!”

Holocalls Avatars : Canon Owners

Did some more digging and actually found a really interesting thing (imo!)  A lot of those avatars aren’t used at all in game BUT they are coded in, meaning they have an OWNER! And I found them ;3

Edgerunners and 2077: Breaking Cycles and Finding Happiness Together

So I just finished watching Cyberpunk Edgerunners, which is a seriously AMAZING show that I super recommend, even if you haven’t actually played Cyberpunk 2077 or even know the first thing about the franchise. However, the one thing I really want to talk about right now is how the story of Edgerunners relates/reflects the story of Cyberpunk 2077, and more specifically how the story of David Martinez and Lucyna “Lucy” Kushinada makes for an especially interesting foil to what most people will agree is the ‘best’ or at least most hopeful/optimistic ending option available to CP77 protagonist V, and one specific version of that ending in particular.

(WARNING: I will be massively spoiling both the ending for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and at least one of the endings for Cyberpunk 2077.)

Now as you can probably guess if you’ve played the game, the ending I am referring to is the Nomad-focused ‘The Star’ ending of CP77, wherein V leaves Night City for good with the Aldecaldos Nomad Clan after successfully extracting Johnny Silverhand’s personality construct, hoping to find some solution to their condition, or at the very least live out what few months of life they have left with their new family. More specifically, I am referring to a Fem!V (whom I will be referring to with their full name; Valerie) who has romanced Judy Alvarez.

The thing is, I think Valerie’s and Judy’s relationship makes for a very interesting parallel or FOIL to the one between David and Lucy, depending on which ending of the game the player chooses.

To start, I think it’s pretty easy to see the parallels between David’s story and the ‘Street Kid’ Life Path leading to ‘The Sun’ ending for V. Both have our protagonists as natives of Night City growing up in the shadows of legendary mercenaries and dreaming of greatness and eventually growing into a legend of their own who ultimately dies in a blaze of glory. Assaulting Arasaka tower and battling Adam Smasher for David, and raiding the Crystal Palace orbital hotel for V. David’s story also has some notable nods to V’s ‘Corpo’ Life Path and ‘The Devil’ ending, with his enrollment in an Arasaka academy at the start of the series and when Adam Smasher offers to preserve David’s mind with Soulkiller at the end of his story.

However, that also leaves one Life Path/Ending for V that David doesn’t have any connections or nods to.

The Nomads.

Now in context, this makes perfect sense. David spent his whole life in Night City and never had anything meaningful interactions with any Nomad Clans during his time at an Edgerunner. The closest is his friendship with Falco, who only has a Nomad background and is no longer part of a clan. There’s no reason David’s story would have any parallels or nods to V’s potential Nomad story.

But I think that entire lack of parallels from David serves to highlight the significance of ‘The Star’ ending being the most hopeful/optimistic one, and why it’s the proverbial and literal ‘Third Option’ for V.

A big theme of Edgerunners that runs through to 2077 is that the whole ‘Edgerunner’ lifestyle is one long cycle of violence, pain and trauma. Of mercenaries chasing the glory of their predecessors, only to destroy themselves in the process. We saw it with Maine’s descent into cyberpsychosis in the first half of the show, and saw David repeating the cycle in the second half. And a ‘Street Kid’ V who follows ‘The Sun’ ending is simply continuing that cycle. And the worst part is that David’s alternatives really weren’t any better, as shown by the nods to the ‘Corpo’ Life Path and ‘The Devil’ ending. At the end of the day, David really only had two options: Become a slave to the corporations or destroy himself fighting them, representing the dichotomy between ‘The Sun’ and ‘The Devil’ endings.

And THAT is what makes ‘The Star’ ending so important for V. It’s the Third Option that David never had. It shows V doing what David couldn’t. It shows V breaking the cycle that destroyed David, Maine and so many others before them. Or at the very least, escaping the cycle. Instead of becoming a slave or destroying themself, V simply LEAVES Night City behind with genuine hope for a longer life. Even if they’re unable to find a cure for their deteriorating health, it’s clear they will be genuinely happy with whatever time they have left with their new family.

Now, with the broad significance of V’s Nomad path in contrast to David’s story established, let’s talk about Lucy and Judy, and their respective relationships with David and Valerie.

Out of the prospective love-interests in CP77, I’d argue Lucy has the most in common with Judy Alvarez. Admittedly, a good chunk of this is simply due to process of elimination. I think we can agree Lucy has more in common with Judy than she does with an estranged nomad, an aging rockstar or a cop. If nothing else, while she may not be a top-tier Netrunner like Lucy, Judy does clearly have some skill with breaching and hacking, notably the only LI in the game to do so.

Where the parallels become a lot more noticeable is when we start looking at Judy’s actual prospective relationship with Valerie. If we’re looking for the version of V’s story that most closely parallels that of David Martinez, then I’d argue that would be a ‘Street Kid’ Valerie who romances Judy and ultimately follows ‘The Sun’ ending. Just compare Valerie and Judy in this version of events to how David and Lucy turned out:

We have two people who clearly mean the world to each other but whose relationship ultimately ends on a tragic note due to one partner’s failing health and drive to push themselves past their limits and achieve greatness. Both David and Valerie go out in a blaze of glory while Lucy and Judy leave Night City for good, mourning the loss of the partner they loved.

And this is where ‘The Star’ ending representing the ‘third option’ becomes so damn significant. Because if Valerie romances Judy and chooses this ending, then Judy leaves Night City WITH Valerie and the Aldecaldos! In fact, ‘The Star’ is the only ending wherein Valerie and Judy are able to stay together.

In short; a romance between Valerie and Judy wherein Valerie follows ‘The Sun’ ending effectively represents the tragic story of David and Lucy repeating itself. While a romance between Valerine and Judy wherein Valerie follows ‘The Star’ ending represents these two actually finding the life happy together that David and Lucy were never able to reach.
