Since Biden’s declaration, more than 3,800 Americans have died from Covid-19. They, and those who went before them, are the only group for whom the pandemic is over.
Yes, we’re in a different place than we were in March 2020. Some parts are better: there are no refrigerator trucks stationed outside hospitals right now; we have incredibly safe and effective vaccines; we have learned how well high-quality masks and ventilation help prevent the spread of all respiratory illnesses. At a moral level, however, some parts are worse: We now know exactly what works to stop the spread, yet we’re not doing it. We know how to save lives, but hundreds of people continue dying every day.
“We have the tools, and now we’re setting up the entire system so that we cannot use those tools,” said Esther Choo, professor of emergency medicine at Oregon Health and Science University. “We just created this vacuum of information so that we can’t even pivot intelligently as the next surge comes.”
What’s actually “over” is the funding and sense of urgency for addressing the pandemic. If we continue on this path, “we’re not funding long Covid trials, wells are drying up for Covid relief funds, public health departments do not see an influx of a public health workforce that’s funded by Covid dollars, and we’re going to see no more Covid funding relief bills,” Josh Barocas, associate professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, told me. “We are now behind again.”
In June, the Biden administration reportedly discussed how many deaths from Covid are acceptable. That number appears to be more than 200,000 so far this year. One runs out of ways to describe such an intense wave of loss. That’s almost 500 jumbo jets crashing so far this year—almost two every day. It’s more than the entire population of Little Rock, Arkansas, or Salt Lake City, Utah, or Grand Rapids, Michigan. It is nearing half the population of Wyoming. And the year isn’t over yet.
The death tally doesn’t take into consideration the work and school hours lost from at least 40 million Covid cases—a number that is extremely under-counted—this year. It doesn’t account for those who go on to experience long-term symptoms—numbers that, shockingly, aren’t even tracked. If only 5 percent of people infected develop long Covid, that’s still 2 million people and counting who have a new chronic illness or disability in 2022. And the tally doesn’t include the mounting medical bills or the evictions or the missed births and graduations and weddings. It certainly doesn’t count the health workers being crushed under wave after wave of preventable cases and complications.
We seem, instead, to have decided that this is an acceptable rate of loss and disruption; this is our new normal. As soon as we leave the acute emergency phase, we believe the crisis has passed. But that means it’s only going to go on longer—and winter is coming.
Biden’s words weren’t surprising for anyone who has followed the administration’s approach to Covid. His chief medical adviser, Anthony Fauci, said we were exiting the “full blown” pandemic in February, as more than 2,500 Americans died from Covid every single day, and in April he said the U.S. was not currently in a “pandemic phase.”
“If they truly believe this,” said Barocas, referring to the Biden administration, “then I think that a lot of us were duped. He ran on Covid, he ran on science, he ran on listening to scientists.”
Even if the administration’s dismissal of the pandemic is a political move to gain momentum for the midterm elections, it will be difficult or impossible to walk back from the stance in a few months. “I just don’t see a way that [Biden can] then say, ‘Oh, no, no, guys. We were just kidding. We were just doing this politically,’” Barocas said. “We have to claw our way back after these sorts of comments, and it’s incredibly damaging to public health.”

Where is the country-destroying migrant surge that was supposed to come after Title 42 ended? Why has no one taken your guns? Why isn't Hillary Clinton locked up? So many questions.
By Rex Huppke
Last I checked, there are approximately 3,756 Republicans running for the GOP presidential nomination, and the vast majority of them – particularly the Donalds Trump and the Rons DeSantis of the world – want voters to know they should be terrified.
Terrified of what, you ask? Oh, I dunno. Socialism. Marxism. “Radical” teachers. Mickey Mouse. Drag queens. “Others.” Pretty much everything, it seems. All the fears. (I’d add spiders to that list, but that’s just me, a liberal scaredy cat.)
Fearmongering is a tried-and-true Republican Party tradition and with the 2024 election cycle about to kick into full gear, it’s mongering season.
REPUBLICAN FEARMONGERING, AND SOME QUESTIONS ABOUT WHY FEARS ARE NEVER REALIZED
So I have a suggestion for GOP voters, from the MAGA loyalists to the (three remaining) moderates to everyone in between. The first GOP presidential debate will be Aug. 23 in Milwaukee. At that event, you should demand answers to the following fear-related questions:
Why is “her” – the Hillary Clinton character in the “Lock her up!” chant – not locked up? Former President Donald Trump was supposed to do that, yet “her” walks free.
Why haven't we been literally invaded by umpteen South American migrant caravans?
Where is the country-destroying migrant surge that was supposed to come after Title 42 ended?
Why aren’t there violent MS-13 gang members on every street corner?
Why haven't the tyrannical Democrats taken our guns?
Why hasn’t Obamacare been repealed?
Where is the GOP health care plan? (Coming in two weeks, I’m sure of it!)
Why, with godless, devious Democrat Joe Biden as President, are Americans still allowed to say “Merry Christmas”?
Why did the COVID-19 vaccines work? Why did they not contain tracking chips that allow the government to monitor us?
Why has the economy not collapsed and why has the American way of life not been destroyed?
Why is there not, as Michigan gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon promised in 2022 before not becoming Governor, “a drag queen in every classroom, indoctrinating our children”?
Why haven’t drag shows turned all Americans into drag queens?
YEARS OF FEAR, WITH SO FEW RESULTS – IT'S ALMOST AS IF THEY'RE MANIPULATING VOTERS
Why are America’s big cities not actually dystopian hellscapes?
Why is the murder rate declining when we’ve been told repeatedly that crime is spiraling out of control?
How come our children are able to watch Disney movies without turning gay?
Why are Americans still allowed to speak English?
Why are we still able to hold dear all the things we hold dear?
I WAS SPECIFICALLY PROMISED WIDESPREAD SOCIALISM. WHAT THE HECK?
Why has nobody come to confiscate our guns? We have actual buckets filled with guns in the basement and bullets everywhere and not a single damn Democrat has come to rip them from our hands, cold and dead or otherwise.
Why has virtually everything a Republican candidate or Fox News talking head ever said to instill fear in our hearts wound up being either total nonsense or, at best, an almost bizarre overexaggeration of a relatively minor issue?
Why has America not been transformed into a socialist wasteland?
Why, for the last time, do we still have all of our guns?
You deserve answers to these questions, my Republican friends. Because often, in this big and confusing world of ours, there are inescapable signs that suggest you’re being lied to.
Learning to spot them is an important life skill. Off you go.

Great news for uninsured adults in the USA who want a COVID-19 booster! It now appears that ALL CVS locations are now active participants in the Bridge Access Program. The Bridge Access Program gives out free Covid-19 vaccinations to 18+ adults who otherwise can't afford one, so if you have a CVS near you, please go get one! For others who don't have a CVS near them, please go to vaccines.gov, click on "Find Covid-19 vaccines", fill out which vaccines you prefer (you can mix different vaccines if you have to so i reccomend just marking all of them for the age groups you need), and when the next page loads mark the "Bridge Access Program Participant" option to see only locations that are Bridge Access Program participants. Hopefully, other places that aren't CVS will start participating soon, so just check back every so often to see if there are any updates. The CDC Bridge Access Program website also has more details on what locations will be participating, but only CVS is appearing as an active participant on the vaccines.gov location finder at the moment.
