Conventionally Yours Review
Conventionally Yours by Annabeth Albert - 5/5 - Gay New Adult RomCom
Sometimes we find the perfect book, the one that reads like it was written specifically for us. I experienced this feeling when I finally read Conventionally Yours by Annabeth Albert. Queer enemies-to-lovers, card game nerds on a road trip to a convention, mental health rep, and a Jewish romantic lead. I loved every word of this book and I'm looking forward to reading its spin-off and potentially other books that Albert has written.
Conrad and Alden are known for being rival players of a game called "Odyssey" on the "Gamer Grandpa" vlog. Due to the vlog's popularity, the professor in charge scores tickets to a Vegas convention for all of his players. If any of them win the convention's tournament they'll have a chance to play in the pro tour. Conrad is close to homelessness and Alden is being forced to follow his parents' dream. A win could be good for either of them. On the road to Vegas, they'll push past the misconceptions they have of each other and realize they might like what they see.

Ok, page 73, on one of the books I'm currently reading -- it's "Out of Character" by Annabeth Albert, sequel to "Conventionally Yours" (which I'd just finished reading) -- the line is "What about you?" (top of the page).
Ofc I'm linking them so y'all don't have to Google it:
So, what about you? What's your current read?
Fic or book, it's all good to me - though AO3 is the best site for fic imho.
Is it as fun as these two? Tumblr rec'd me the author and her books, so it's only fair that I rec them while I read them 🤷
I've actually bought a few of hers, they're all shaping up to be really good.
Book divination be upon ye!
Pick up the nearest book or access what you’re currently reading on your e-reader. Go to page 73. Point to a place on the page at random. What does it say about your day?
Reblog this post with the line, phrase, or sentence you landed on. Add the book title in the tags if it feels good. Or don’t, and just embrace the chaos! Up to you!
We’ll go first.
Like we know something other people do not.

Bookworm Will Review #8
Title: "Conventionally Yours"
Author: Annabeth Alberts
Rating: 4/5
Review: (MILD SPOILERS)
This was my first time reading anything by Albert and overall, this was a very cute slow-burn enemy-to-lovers story. The biggest draw for me was the geeky/nerdy plot that focused around a card game, so myself being a huge Magic The Gathering & DnD player, I was very interested.
I am a little sad that Odyssey isn't a real game because it was written with really quirky descriptions, so I do wish I could play it for real haha!
The limited setting of making it a road trip and having characters bond is one trope that really worked for Conrad and Alden. The overall pacing of the journey could have been shortened, but I wasn't totally against the length of their trip since it technically was across the country. To get to see the two open up to each other was a little predictable only because I felt like there was too much crammed into one of their backstories.
Alden was dealing with overbearing parents as well as navigating through some forced stereotypes of being neurodivergent (which I think was handled decently). Meanwhile, Conrad seemed to have a bit too much going on and while I recognize that there are some people who have a lot going on like abusive parents and homelessness, it just kind of felt like a lot at some points. Yes, they did have a direct impact on each other that led to Conrad's current situation, but that's just what I felt while reading it.
The bond between them was still enjoyable to read and the way that Albert wrote out their expressions for one another made me feel all warm and fuzzy. Plus there is a married couple who were just too cute: I loved Julio and Gus so much!
I will definitely be checking out the next in this series, 'Out of Character' which I believe is where we'll get to learn more about Jasper who had a developing side plot in this first book.

Conrad: Does anyone want to be my cousin? I'm starting a new family from scratch

Note
I’m looking for a mlm travel romance. Like two friends on a trip or journey and falling in love type of deal. I prefer happy endings if possible!
Try these:
Conventionally Yours by Annabeth Albert
Trust the Focus by Megan Erickson
How to Repair a Mechanical Heart by J.C. Lillis (YA)
Deep Dish by L.A. Witt

Oh yeah I’m 20% in right now and I clocked that shit so fast bc he and I relate way too much for him to not be autistic. Even if you take comparisons to my experience out of the equation, the signs are all there.
EVERYBODY SHUT UP
I'm reading Conventionally Yours by Annabeth Albert, and I've decided to highlight all signs that Alden is autistic.
I'm only on chapter 5 of 37, but I've already gotten so many hints. This is my favorite thing currently.

TEN PEOPLE I WANT TO KNOW BETTER (10 sounds ambitious 😅)
Thanks for the tag, @sc0rpiflow3r ❤️
Last Song
"Scout Lace Harding" from The Dragon Age Inquisition soundtrack because The Veilguard reminded me how much I love the Inquisition soundtrack.
Favourite Colour
PURPLE, but a lot of colors are "contextual" for me. For example, I love yellow cars even though I hate yellow otherwise :D Purple is a staple, though.
Last Book
I re-reread Conventionally Yours by Annabeth Albert for the tenth time.
Last Movie
Deadpool and Wolverine - I'm not much of a movie girl. I prefer series.
Last TV Show
Agatha All Along and loved it!
Sweet/Spicy/Savoury?
ALL. ALL is good. Like, salty peanuts coated in honey and chili. Delicious. But I do have a sweet tooth, so if I had to pick, sweet.
Relationship Status
Very married. (For 20 years.)
Last Thing You Googled
Fodmap diet.
Current Obsession
THE VEILGUARD! I did my waiting, all ten years of it, and now I'm very much enjoying the reward.
Looking Forward To
Christmas and being done with this crappy year.

Queer Book List
I've just updated my complete list of LGBT+ novels ever read (as far as I can remember). Not including short story collections, comics, non-fiction, or things I've completely forgotten.
I'm not including books where a main character's sexuality was only implied (it's got to be clear on the page), and this list contains queer main and secondary characters only, not background characters that play little part in the story.
I don't read a lot of Young Adult, so assume these are all adult-oriented unless otherwise stated.
I'm not judging nor rating nor recommending any of these; it's purely a list of books I've finished.

Top 5 books? 🩵
This sat in my inbox for a while, cause it feels impossible 😂 Thank you for asking and sorry in advance haha ❤️
Heartstopper Comics + Novellas - Alice Oseman (I have to mention these as a unit, cause otherwise we’d be over the 5 book limit already)
Here The Whole Time - Vitor Martins
Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda - Becky Albertalli
Red, White & Royal Blue - Casey McQuiston
Conventionally Yours - Annabeth Albert
A couple of honorary mentions (books that belong on that list. it would physically pain me not to mention them):
All boys aren’t blue - George M. Johnson
The Black Flamingo - Dean Atta
Les 1001 vies des Urgences - Baptiste Beaulieu
The Normal Heart: A Play - Larry Kramer
The Perks of being a Wallflower - Stephen Chbosky
One Last Stop - Casey McQuiston
My Policeman - Bethan Roberts
They both die at the end - Adam Silvera
What if it all goes right? - Sophia Soames (beautifully written mmf poly relationship)
The Lord of the Rings - J.R.R. Tolkien (the entire series, duh)
I have so many more I want to mention, but I already hijacked this and accidentally turned it into a Top 15 oopsie 😭 Sorry not sorry 🤷

Top three queer books for sleepover Saturday? xoxo MJ/kiwiana-writes
MJ you have no idea the can of worms you've opened because my initial response was "but what genre" so i'm running with it because books are my most favorite topic.
adult
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
The Charm Offensive by Alison Cochrun
Conventionally Yours by Annabeth Albert
special mention: Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston (included because it's obvious, but also because it led me to reading more queer books and landed in my lap exactly when needed it)
young adult
Darius the Great Is Not Okay by Adib Khorram
Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli (i also enjoyed the movie adaptation)
Anger is a Gift by Mark Oshiro (not queer MC, but still queer rep & author is queer)
memoir
Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies by Michael Ausiello
Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel
Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body by Roxane Gay
let's do sleepover saturday!
#kiwiana-write#I cannot express exactly how much Anger is a Gift is special to me#all of these are based on either (1) how much fun I had reading them and (2) if they stuck with me long after

These are some of my favorite authors, and I absolutely adore their writing. Tal Bauer’s action romances are one of the best I have read, “The Executive Office” series is so good and will keep you on your toes. Keira Andrews made me cry reading “Semper Fi” because the emotions are so good and “Christmas Deal” is a Xmas book I’ll read anytime during the year. Annabeth Albert writes too some good books! All of them are so active, and “Conventionally Yours” is a book I’ll keep thinking back too ’cause it’s so sweet! These authors have written some of my favorite books, and as a writer myself I look up to them ’cause #1 their writing is just so good, #2 they let themselves write a bunch of different stories with different tropes and sub-genres which is awesome! #3 Reading their books makes my publishing dreams feel possible!

@trensu tagged me in 9 people you want to get to know better so here it goes:
Last song: Don’t Look Back in Anger by Oasis (forgive me, it was on the work radio)
Currently watching: The Bear (Jeremy Allen White is so talented and a work friend was desperate for someone to talk to about it so I gave it a shot. I love all the characters and I will definitely be looking for it on here once I finish season 2)
Currently reading: Conventionally Yours by Annabeth Albert (I’m really struggling to get through it, it’s not bad I’m just not super into it)
Latest obsession: Barbie, all the way. Do I need to explain?
I only just got back on tumblr after literally years away, most of the blogs I used to follow are gone but here are eight people I want to get to know better: @eldesperadont, @adamjf, @orange-catsidy, @infiniteeight8, @incogneat-oh, @ralkana, @faggotmox, and @lectorel
