"The COCKNEY REJECTS must be one of the most earthly, solid punk bands to have arisen in the last couple of years, and one of few to present punk in the way it should be heard. Nowadays bands use all sorts of gadgets which detract from the spontaneity asnd simplicity of the music. THE REJECTS, however resist this and are writing and playing songs in the way groups did some three years ago. This is what they had to say after their set supporting SLAUGHTER."

GRINDING ZINE: "Is the new single (Greatest Cockney Rip Off) a reference to Jimmy Pursey?"

Micky Geggus: No, well it's a bit of a piss take really, like he goes round calling himself the great cockney cowboy and all that but he never goes near the  place,y' know what I mean?

GRINDING HALT: "Did you have an argument with him?"

MG: "Yeah, a bit — let's drop it though 'cos he isn't really worth it. l've had enough of him."

GRINDING HALT: "How did you feel about the press the album got?"

MG: "Well, I was happy with the album and that's all that really matters to me. I reckon it's a good album, and that's good enough for me, the press ain't all that important —  Gary Bushell gave it a good write up though."

GRINDING HALT: "How did the Gary Bushell link come about?"

MG : "Well, basically I sent him a tape and he liked it and it all went from there. But he had to choose between writing and managing and he chose writing 'cos you can't do both properly at the same time."

This Seems To Encapsulate Events ...

'Congratulations' to West Ham United and their scummy hooligan fans on finally winning something since the dreadful Cockney Rejects (the pound shop Sham 69) did their 1980 FA Cup Final song (it wasn't official, but the club forgot to do one and so co-opted it) by murdering their fans best known chant.

Yeah, and like too much of the British media this morning let's just pretend their vermin supporters didn't split the head open of the Fiorentina captain during the match with sharpened coins - a common 'hazard' for players when against certain clubs in European football.

No one should have to put up with this shit in any job, let alone a game of bloody football (pardon the pun).

If this means all the English clubs, never mind West Ham, get banned from Europe yet again, that's sore, but so be it.

(And yes, Fiorentina's fans weren't exactly angels either)

Sick to death of grunting neanderthals who think wearing a football top makes them part of some sort of master race for real life's losers, secure in the knowledge the police will do nothing until its already too late. Grow the f**k up.

(And don't start the 'tiny minority' bullshit - most mass audience sports fans manage to go to and from matches without turning everywhere they go into impromptu flash mob meetings of The Sealed Knot ...)

George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion

Pygmalion, is a romantic play in five acts by George Bernard Shaw.

Henry Higgins, a phonetician, accepts a bet that simply by changing the speech of a Cockney flower seller he will be able, in six months, to pass her off as a duchess. Eliza undergoes grueling training. When she successfully “passes” in high society—having in the process become a lovely young woman of sensitivity and taste—Higgins dismisses her abruptly as a successfully completed experiment. Eliza, who now belongs neither to the upper class, whose mannerisms and speech she has learned, nor to the lower class, from which she came, rejects his dehumanizing attitude.

The play became famous as a motion picture in 1938 and later as the stage musical My Fair Lady (1956), with a musical score by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe. A 1964 film version of the musical featured Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn.

Jere Torkelsen has been a member of the San Francisco Opera chorus since 1987. During his tenure he has performed many roles including, Gen. John Rawlins in Philip Glasses Appomattox, Melisso in Handel’s Alcina, The Imperial Commissioner in Madama Butteryfly, and The Journalist in Berg’s Lulu, among others. He is also active in musical theater. Recent performances include Tony in ‘The Most Happy Fella’ and Fred in ‘Kiss Me Kate.’ He sang Firman and Bouquet in Weber’s ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ while on the national tour.

Margaret Genovese is originally from the Washington D.C. area. She received a Bachelor degree and Artist Diploma from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University where she was a two-time winner of the Liberace Foundation Scholarship. She was a finalist in the Metropolitan Opera Pacific Regional Auditions and first place winner of the National Symphony Orchestra’s Young Soloist Competition. Ms. Genovese made her first professional operatic debut in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, appearing as Papagena with the Baltimore Opera Company. She also performed at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as a soloist and toured Sydney Australia as Christine in an adaptation of Phantom of the Opera.

Sally Porter Munro is a native of London, England and a graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, England. While living in England she sang with the English National Opera, Royal Opera de la Monnaie in Brussels, and as an oratorio soloist in Europe. She also performed with the BBC Singers on radio and television. She relocated to New York City to continue her studies. She is a full-time member of The San Francisco Opera Chorus and has covered and sung a number of small roles. She enjoys collaborating with contemporary composers and has performed premiers by Thomas Ades, Ian Venables, Allen Shearer, David Irving, Marge Wheeler, and Peter Dyson.

A San Francisco native, Claudia Siefer has actively performed as an opera and concert soloist throughout the Bay Area. In 1980 she participated in the Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Program. San Francisco Opera soloist highlights include Slave (Salome), Assistant to Chairman Mao (Nixon in China), Maria (La Forza del Destino), Fourth Maidservant and The Overseer (Elektra), and a Woman (Katya Kabanova). Ms. Siefer performed The Witch (Hansel and Gretel) and Santuzza (Cavalleria Rusticana) with Marin Opera Company, and the title role of Madama Butterfly), Mimì (La Bohème), and The Countess (Le Nozze di Figaro) with SF Opera’s own Brown Bag Opera.

MICKY GEGGUS: "We formed after the original punk explosion in 1979, and got a deal relatively quickly with a small indie label who released our debut "Flares n Slippers" EP, which stayed in the indie charts for months, and got us headhunted by majors such as Warner Bros and EMI.

Being QUEEN fans, of course we fancied seeing our debut album on the same hallowed label, so we plumped for a 5 album deal with them. Life in the East End of London was never quite the same after that..."

After the much-hyped filth and fury of the initial punk movement almost instantly combusted or codified, things got much more interesting. In the halcyon pre-internet days, regional scenes were allowed to grow and develop their own identifiable and often highly idiosyncratic sounds, word of one another’s development spreading slowly through fanzines and small mail order distributors. Lucky for us, there were also cameras laying around, and the rare films in this series provide an invaluable snapshot of one of the most exciting – and one of the most loosely-defined – periods of music in the 20th Century. I CAN SEE IT AND I’M PART OF IT: San Francisco Punk Portraits 1978 - 82 The time between Richard Nixon's resignation in 1974 and Reagan's ascent from CA governor to U.S. presidency in 1981 marks a prolific surge of artistic and creative production across California, often taking a sharp trajectory from the 60s utopian idealism as a strong sense of distrust and disillusionment cast its long, dark shadows and was reflected in music – once again, the natural channel for response, reaction and outrage. In San Francisco the thriving music scene developed its own punk conceit, an arsenal comprised of bands, filmmakers, artists, clubs and the ever-supportive denizens along for the ride. Gender factors largely into the equation as women were not merely audience members, but forceful contributors driving the scene. The boundary between the spectator and performer was often blurred as audience members were inspired to pick up instruments, form bands and be on the stage the very next week. The DIY aesthetic prevailed… and the cameras were rolling! I CAN SEE IT AND I’M PART OF IT is a unique glimpse into SF’s punk past – an archival treasure trove comprised of moving and still images, both amateur and professional. This portion of I CAN SEE IT AND I’M PART OF IT includes a slideshow presentation of Conner’s legendary portraits of individuals and performance shots, a primary element of the history of SF punk. BUZZ OR HOWL UNDER THE INFLUENCE Despite the heavy regionalism we’re focusing on in this series, these bands did not exist in a bubble. Through various magical combinations of guile, luck, stupidity and very hard work, plenty of bands got in the van and relentlessly criss-crossed the nation, serving as Johnny Appleseeds of the underground. Once the van was back on the road, a new scene had sprung. Thanks to the Hugh M. Hefner Archive of the Moving Image, we’re tapping into an unimagined motherlode of live footage from the likes of Public Image Limited, Black Flag, the Avengers, Suicide and many more, much of it shot for regional television programs or personal collections. 16mm/35mm/Digital. 1978 – 1982.
