CIPAM-DIPP launches IP competition for college & university students
The Cell for IPR Promotion and Management (CIPAM), Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), in collaboration with ASSOCHAM and ERICSSON India, has launched a one of its kind Intellectual Property (IP) Competition ‘IPrism’ for college and university students. This competition invites students to submit films on piracy & counterfeiting under two categories of 30 and 60 seconds. Another category in the competition is a mobile gaming app on IP. The last date for receiving entries is 31st March 2018. Cash prizes worth INR 4 lacs will be given to the winning teams along with mementoes, certificates and recognition on the official CIPAM website (www.cipam.gov.in). The competition aims to foster a culture of innovation and creativity in the younger generation. It will provide young creators with a unique opportunity to see their creations recognized on a national platform. Counterfeiting and Piracy cause significant loss to the industry and pose serious safety threats to the consumers.Generating awareness can help in tackling such crimes since limited knowledge about their adverse social and economic impact leads to circulation and consumption of pirated content and fake goods. You may visit www.iprism.co.in or follow CIPAM on Twitter at @CIPAM_India or Facebook at CIPAM India for complete details and regular updates on the competition. As it may be recalled, the National IPR Policy was adopted on 12th May 2016 to create a vibrant IP ecosystem in the country. Creating IPR Awareness through outreach and promotional activities is the first and foremost objective of the Policy. CIPAM, a professional body under DIPP, has been actively involved in many activities including a nation-wide IPR awareness campaign. Webinar on Intervention & Support of MSME through IPR post COVID-19: 11th May 2020
Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) are important instruments to foster a culture of innovation. IPRs essentially protect brands, inventions, designs, creative, and literary works from being copied and commercially exploited by third parties. They grant exclusivity to the creators or owners of IPRs to commercially exploit their works. The exclusivity and potential gains by commercial exploitation of the IPRs act as an incentive to promote innovation in various fields. IPR protection grants legal rights in favour of the rights owner who may restrain third parties for using his IPRs and also claim damages.
MSME sector is one of the largest contributors to the Indian economy, however, awareness about IPRs is lacking in Indian MSMEs. IPRs include trademarks, copyrights, patents, geographical indication and industrial designs and protecting them enhances the competitiveness of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Intellectual Property Awareness Scheme was launched by the Cell for IPR Promotion and Management (CIPAM) in association in association with the MSME-Development Institute, Kolkata under the Ministry of MSME, Government of India with an objective to enhance the awareness of IPR in the MSME Sector by conducting seminars/workshops covering topics like international filing procedures, impact of counterfeiting and piracy, promote government schemes for filing of IPRs and how to use IPR as an asset to grow business.
During this global pandemic, these small scale enterprises have shown tremendous economic potential in the form hosting their businesses on online platforms to increase consumer outreach. A business that has a trademark or a logo or any mark that distinguishes them from their peers, among their customers/clients, and registering it can just ensure that nobody else in their trade or industry is able to use that mark anymore, and this exclusivity allows the MSME to attach goodwill, of quality product/service, to that mark at lower costs. This is the time to advertise these protected assets to the masses in order to gain recognition and demand in their respective industries.
Some examples include- Copyright on any original literature, from regulatory to marketing literature such as brochures, pamphlets, package insert, product manuals etc, restraining anyone else in their industry from using that patented product, machine or process in their (competitors’)factories, Geographical Indications (GI), held by a collective such as an association of industries or handicraft makers like Banarasi Silk, Darjeeling Tea, Chanderi Fabric, Udayagiri Wooden Cutlery, allow the MSMEs of that geographical region by which these GIs are identified to use the related marks and/or logos on their products, and preclude MSMEs of other regions from branding.
Besides, the various speakers from MSME Department, Govt.of India and the Federation of Associations of Small Industries of India, the eminent IP Attorney Biswajit Sarkar who is widely regarded in the industry circles will speak for the program. He is having wide experience of handling complicated matters in IPR and successfully completed two world-renowned cases, such as registration of a particular address as trademark of 6 Ballygunge Place and creating copyright protection for Missionaries of Charity founded by Mother Teresa. Mr.Biswajit Sarkar is empanelled with different Embassies, Consulates and Chambers of Commerce.
To give back to the society, his firm regularly takes interns from law institutes countrywide. Mr.Sarkar is regularly invited by Universities, Law Colleges, National Judicial Academy, Government  Bodies and various Chambers of Commerce to give lectures to spread awareness of the role of IP in modern business.

Recently, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) announced that it had developed a mobile application and website on Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs).
Launched by the Modi government on 14th October 2019, the dedicated website and app are aiming at making Indian startups and SMEs learn to protect and maximize their innovations.
According to a government press release, these dedicated tools have been developed by Cell for IPR Promotion and Management (CIPAM), DPIIT along with Qualcomm and National Law University (NLU), Delhi. By playing a remarkable role in enhancing the competitiveness of the businesses and opportunities to take technology products to market, Intellectual Property (IP) can be a road directing startups and SMEs to a successful destination.
Guruprasad Mohapatra, secretary DPIIT, explained that as both the app and website will be useful to communities that hold a considerable promise for the country and its economy, this project appears very significant. Startups and SMEs are more harmonized into investment and risk-taking due to lack of legal knowledge, and today, when the nation is on the threshold of the fourth industrial revolution, the interface between law and technology is growing and therefore, it is crucial to be available with a specialized app and website to help enterprises with the IP processes.
The press release also mentioned that the e-learning platforms – L2Pro India IP e-learning Website and the L2Pro India Mobile App are expected to help not just startups but even entrepreneurs, innovators, and small and medium industries to understand IPRs for their protection, integrate IP into their business models, and obtain value for their R&D (research and development) efforts.
The L2Pro has been successfully implemented in various nations, like Italy, UK (United Kingdom), Germany, and France benefiting from close collaboration with IP Firms and public research institutions. The learning app has been customized for India to ensure that innovations are protected, managed, and commercialized.
The L2Pro India IP e-learning platforms will be available with 11 modules for three different levels, covering Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced. Each module would comprise e-text for understanding concepts, links to additional resources on the subject, short animated videos of the ideas, and quizzes for grading the learner’s knowledge and insight into the subject.
People can access these e-learning platforms through their desktop, laptop, mobile browser, and mobile app (on Android and iOS), and on successful completion of their e-learning modules, they will receive e-certificates by CIPAM-DPIIT, NLU, and Qualcomm. ✅   For view source: https://bit.ly/2NjWWic

The Modi government, on 14th October 2019, has launched a dedicated mobile app and website to assist Indian startups and SMEs with the Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs). DPIIT, the Department for the Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade along with Qualcomm and National Law University, Delhi has developed these dedicated tools.
Guruprasad Mohapatra, secretary DPIIT, said that startups and small companies are more tuned into investment-making and risk-taking, but lack legal knowledge. The recently launched website and app, which aim at aiding startups and SMEs to learn to safeguard and maximize their innovations, would be useful for enterprises and startups holding great promise for the nation and its economy. In the present age, where we are at the inception of the fourth industrial revolution, the interface between technology and law is continuously growing. Therefore, it is essential to have a specialized site and app that could help startups and SMEs with the Intellectual Property (IP) processes, he added.
Like the Start-up India scheme, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi three years ago, the site and app launched now would also encourage the culture of innovation in India. At present, there are over 20,000 recognized start-ups running in all 28 states. Although IPRs obtained by Indian startups are considered imperative for the success of the fourth industrial revolution, the lack of knowledge regarding legal provisions turns it difficult for newbies to capitalize on their innovation.
IPR Protection for Not Just Start-ups
The e-learning platforms – L2Pro India IP e-learning Website and the L2Pro India Mobile App will help not only startups but also innovators, entrepreneurs, and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in comprehending IPRs for their protection and ownership. Besides, the individuals and organizations can use this mobile app and IPR learning portal to integrate IP into their business models and reap benefits of their research and development (R&D) efforts.
The L2Pro has already been implemented in several foreign countries, including Germany, UK, Italy, and France. In India, the learning app and portal have been customized to make sure that the innovations of startups are protected, managed, and commercialized.
Different Modules for Different Levels
The L2Pro India IP e-learning platform holds eleven (11) modules for three different levels, ranging from basic to intermediate and advanced. Every single module out of these 11 includes e-text, short animated videos associated with the concept, links to additional sources on the subject. It also covers quizzes for assessment and grading the users’ knowledge and understanding of the subject. Learners can access the L2Pro IP e-learning platforms on their computers (desktop, laptop, etc.)  and mobiles (Android and iOS), and they will be given e-certificates by CIPAM-DPIIT and NLU, Delhi and Qualcomm on successful completion of the e-learning modules. For view-source: https://www.kashishipr.com/blog/india-launches-mobile-app-to-help-startups-smes-protect-their-iprs/
