Hayao Miyazaki Interview with Ninomiya Kazunari (2010) part 2
Tumblr media
Ninomiya: “My Neighbor Totoro” didn’t do very well in theaters, did it? Miyazaki: Not at all. Ninomiya: Though it’s hard to believe it now.
Miyazaki: When you’re doing something new, it always comes with risks attached.  So even though I thought audiences wouldn’t really come to see it, by making what I wanted to, it opened up the path for me.  I met people who allowed me to do it, and well, I had good luck.  I said it earlier, that the audiences didn’t abandon it and came to see it, and I was relieved (lol).  I’ve just repeated that and have gotten to this point.  And all we could do was believe we were the ones on the right path, and keep going like we were.  So then we quit doing CG and said, “We’re doing it all with pencils and brushes!”
Ninomiya: That decision is incredible.  To stop doing CG.
Miyazaki: Actually, CG erodes away at the painter’s brain.  I think drawing is a way to express your own feelings, and you can’t stop doing that work.  There are now more people that use computers to draw backgrounds than by hand.  I’ve heard is about 90% of them.
Ninomiya: 90%! Miyazaki: A while back, we had a young man from Korea come, and he said that in Korea there is now not even one animation that has the backgrounds drawn by hand anymore.  He came to Japan because he wanted to train, and I asked him to show me his drawings, but when I looked, I saw that it was totally done on a computer (lol).  Even if you use a brush, a computer is a computer.  (The skill) was already eroded away.  So, with things this overtaken by computers, I thought it would become a rare value to continue being particular about using brushes and pencils.  Like there must be at least one geta specialty store (TN: geta are traditional Japanese sandals) that survives sometimes.  If you line up the things that are being sold everywhere, and start comparing which is cheaper or more expensive, soon you’ll have no idea what’s what, so I figure it’s better to just stick with doing only the geta.  But actually, when you turn what you’ve drawn with pencil and brushes into film, it requires really amazing technique to do so.  Technique that only people who get it will appreciate.
Tumblr media
Ninomiya: I see~.  Lastly, for you, what kind of person is the producer, Suzuki Toshio-san? Miyazaki: I can’t say it all in one word.  There are times I get mad at him, and other times I want him to pull it together, but he’s a person you need when making a movie.
Ninomiya: Do you work together with him the whole time? Miyazaki: The trick is to not work together the whole time.  While we’re working on a project, we wind up spending many more hours together than we do with our wives even.  And then, at first I see nothing but good things about him, but soon I wind up starting to see only the bad things.  Then, I just can’t stand him anymore, and he can’t stand me either.  I don’t even want to see his face.  So it’s better to separate after that.  Sometimes I hadn’t seen him in a year and a half.
Ninomiya: Eh! Miyazaki: By doing that, the next time we need to team up for something but in a different way, it’s possible to do so.  We can’t pair up in the same way as before though.  Relationships with people can be completely used up.  When I’ve used them up, in order to maintain them long term, I try not to see them as much as I can.  By doing that, I can start thinking over time that they’re good after all when I compare them to a random stranger

What If?
If "Welcome Home" were to be made into an actual show, I hope it would look either something like this ...
Tumblr media
#1 CGI Anime Style: This GIF is from the anime "Girl Band Cry." In my opinion, the combination of 3D and 2D would suit Welcome Home a lot better. You can get away with those cartoony expressions without it looking uncanny.
However, I don't want it to be made by Toei (the same studio that made GBC, Dragon Ball and One Piece) considering how they tend to copyright strike anyone who uses or makes references of their shows.
Tumblr media
#2 Full CGI: I remember watching "Lupin III: The First" and immediately falling in love with the look of the movie. At first, I thought Disney had worked on this film but no! It was made by TMS Entertainment and Marza Animation Planet.
If you grew up outside of America, you would know that the original Lupin III franchise is actually a 2D anime series based on a 1970's manga of the same name by Monkey Punch. It's amazing how they manage to translate it to 3D seamlessly.
If Welcome Home were to be made by a Japanese studio, it would be a blast! However, you might have to wait for a year before they could release it internationally. I hope they also release the series for free on YouTube so many people can see it.

Exploring the Fascinating World of the Jungle Book Cartoon
Tumblr media
The Jungle Book, a classic children's story by Rudyard Kipling, has captured the imaginations of generations of readers with its vivid portrayal of the animal kingdom. In recent years, the tale has been brought to life in the form of an animated series called The Jungle Book, which has captivated audiences around the world with its stunning visuals and engaging storytelling.
The Jungle Book cartoon, which first aired in 2010, takes us on a journey into the heart of the jungle, where we meet a young boy named Mowgli, who was raised by a pack of wolves after being abandoned by his parents. The show follows Mowgli as he navigates the dangerous terrain of the jungle, encountering a host of unforgettable characters along the way.
One of the most fascinating aspects of The Jungle Book cartoon is its use of computer-generated imagery (CGI) to create a visually stunning world that feels both realistic and magical. The animators behind the show have created a jungle that is both lush and vibrant, filled with detailed textures and intricate details that bring the environment to life.
But the real heart of The Jungle Book lies in its characters, who are brought to life with incredible depth and complexity. From the fierce and protective Bagheera, the panther who serves as Mowgli's mentor, to the mischievous and unpredictable Kaa, the show is filled with characters who are both relatable and entertaining.
Perhaps the most memorable character in The Jungle Book, however, is Shere Khan, the Bengal tiger who serves as the show's main antagonist. Voiced with menacing charm by veteran actor Sherman Howard, Shere Khan is a formidable foe for Mowgli and his friends, constantly scheming and plotting to bring them down.
Despite its dark themes and intense action sequences, The Jungle Book is ultimately a show about friendship, loyalty, and the power of nature. It's a story that reminds us of the importance of treating others with kindness and respect, no matter how different they may seem. It also highlights the importance of staying true to oneself, even in the face of danger and adversity. Above all, The Jungle Book celebrates the beauty and majesty of the natural world, reminding us of our connection to the planet and the animals that call it home.

Shaonian Ge Xing, Highly Recommended!
Hello! I just want to talk about a show I've been brain rotting over. It's so nice! It's a show about a martial arts band of teenagers trying to prove themselves to the adult world as a whole. The premise is two dudes becomes begrudging friends and get dragged into this strange mystery and a rupal drag race looking monk takes them on a strange pilgrimage to his home. The effects and animations look really cool for a cgi show and I really like how the cgi people look way prettier then uncanny valley. They put a lot of focus on creating realistic looking fabric and extremely beautiful eye appealing characters. The action is very scrumptious and the humor is slapstick based at times. The show name is "Shaonian Ge Xing" and the english name is more rough "Youths and the Golden Coffin", "Great journey of Teenagers", or "Legend of Legendary Youths". This is also hosted on BiliBili and I think you can probably watch it subbed through them on possibly youtube!

Just to introduce a few of my favorite skrunkies in the show I'll explain a bit about them and how to pronounce their names!
First off is Xiao Se (Zhe-OW She-e), I love him so much. He's one of those 5D chess kind of dudes but he's also a cripple who's got a secret identity. He's just really interesting and poised and grade A simping material.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The duetro-tagonist of this show is also Lei Wujie (Lay Woo-Gee), He's a lil red dude. He's pretty passionate and friendly. Something I really like about him is he's not a total stereotype of an action hero. He's funny and nice but also admits his frustration on always losing! He tries not to be a burden and tries to do right by everyone around him. He's a 10/10 sweetie pie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next character in the series who's like a third protagonist?? He's mainly in season 1 but comes back later in the show, his name is Wuxin (Woo She-e-Nh). His name means "Heartless"! (according to my show translation) It can also mean "No Mind". He's a monk with a mysterious past and for some reason or other everyone also wishes to kill him! The story changes into the two main protagonists Xiao Se and Lei Wujie escorting Wuxin to his former home. Over time, they make a deep friendship and it's really beautiful. I won't go too much into him other then his past is really interesting and season 1 is all about him and solving his mystery!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's hardly findable in the USA but if you can find anything about it I highly recommend checking it out. It's got a donghua, mobile game, and a live action from what I can tell. It's a great experience and so much fun to just turn your brain off and watch!
