Back again hehe! (Not anon now tho) Literally adore this page sm! Content is so heartwarming I can’t get enough of it and is easily one of my new fav accs to look through :3 Maybe some MK1 caregiver Reiko and Regressor General Shao Hcs? TY✨
Awhhhh, thank you!!! I love your account as well!!! It's so wholesome and so fun to go through 🥺 (Also the emoji's I used are: 🗡🛡!!)
<3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
CG Reiko w/ Regressor Shao Hcs
🗡 Shao regresses kinda young, about 1-3
🛡 This is probably mostly because he holds back his regression for a super long time because he's busy, he's the general, he doesn't need relaxation time, this, that, etc, etc
🗡 So when he does regress, he's a baby that just wants to be held and loved 🥺
🛡 I like to think Shao involuntarily regressed for a super long time before even knowing what age regression was
🗡 But also never really fully slipped and was probably stuck in between headspaces without knowing
🛡 It was too scary, feeling fully small and fuzzy, what if someone caught him snuggling his blanket or babbling to his favorite stuffie!!
🗡 It was a deep secret he had where he'd find some time to relax and snuggle with his blankets and hide from all his big kid responsibilities
🛡 The first time Reiko ever saw Shao regressed was when they were doing reports together and Shao started getting frustrated because the words were getting too hard and the acts on the page were too horrid and too big for his tiny mind
🗡 Since Reiko already knew of regression, he kinda just went with the flow
🛡 Said that Shao was too tiny right now to be doing any kind of big kid files and they should take a break and do something fun! Like sword fight or wrestle (Reiko's personal favorite little activities)
🗡 Instead they just kinda cuddled in bed because Shao doesn't like doing those things when he's tiny
🛡 He already has to do them when he's big, don't make him do it while he's small 🥺
🗡 Shao doesn't fully regress regress without Reiko
🛡 He can't, it's too difficult and scary
🗡 Plus what is someone walks in? Or he forgot to lock the door? Reiko's big and strong, he can protect him!!
🛡 One of both their favorite activities is story time
🗡 Reiko has a lot of war experience, and he can use some of his victories into great outlandish tales he's done!!
🛡 (^ keeping most of the gore and stuff to practically nonexistent, and maybe fabrotacting a few things here of there, gotta keep the baby entertained!!)
🗡 You know those big dogs that think they can jump on you and sit on your lap like they're the smallest thing in the world?
🛡 That's Shao, 100%
🗡 What do you mean he's gotta be careful when he's trying to get cuddles? He's just a baby 🥺
🛡 (^ Don't worry though, Shao gets all the cuddles he wants, Reiko’s super strong!!)
🗡 Does have to be careful of his horns though, he doesn't wanna poke someone by accident, that'd hurt :(
🛡 If he did accidentally poke Reiko with them, he'd probably just get a gentle reminder that we gotta be careful when we have super cool horns because sometimes we can hurt others
🗡 Please do not yell at this man, he will cry
🛡 Or, more have tears weld in his eyes and start blubbering when you turn away
🗡 He's a big boy, he doesn't cry!! >:(
🛡 . . . Lier
🗡 Positive reaffirming and gentle redirecting work best with Shao
🛡 He doesn't like getting yelled at, or going to a naughty step, or any type of punishment
🗡 He already has to bark orders all day, deal with people he despises
🛡 Luckily, Reiko can turn very soft when he can read a room
🗡 He gets very patient when Shao does something naughty, leading him in the direction rather than yelling
🛡 Will rarely have to every put his foot down because Shao doesn't actually break too many rules
🗡 Most of their rules are for safety anyhow, although he still doesn't understand why he can't draw on the walls 😒
🛡 When Shao feels a little bit older and not baby baby, he's very bossy
🗡 What does Reiko mean he has to write one more sentence on his paperwork? No he doesn't! He can come cuddle him right now!! That's an order!! >:(
🛡 Stomps and huffs when he doesn't get his way (and Reiko has to finish his job, stupid paperwork)
🗡 Doesn't like feeling tiny and Reiko's not there, its scary
🛡 Reiko's got a full time job on his hands, bossy baby on his hip 24/7, fr
🗡 Doesn't like others babysitting him either, right now only Reiko knows and he has no plans on changing that
🛡 Reiko doesn't mind, they'll move at his pace
🗡 Horn scratches are must!!!
🛡 Well, any scratches are a must, lightly on the arm, back scratches while cuddling, almost anywhere Shao has scales
🗡 For being a lieutenant, Reiko has really nice nails that are perfect for scratchies
🛡 Reiko's favorite CG nicknames are Papa or Bubba (when Shao's really small 'Ko cause Shao will repeat it and it makes Reiko feel all big and proud)
🗡 Shao's favorite little nicknames are Little One, Fierce Guy, Tough Cookie, Baby-Bear
🛡 I could probably see Shao being a dragon regressor too??
🗡 And that means he steals all of Reiko's nice shiny stuff for his blankie nest, its his now, Reiko doesn't have a choice >:(
🛡 He's also much more active in this headspace and will play more games like tag or hide and seek
🗡 Shao also likes being called Hatchling when he's a dragon
🛡 Overall, he's either a very cuddly baby, or a little bossy baby (still super cuddly though)
<3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
I know they're mostly focused on Shao but I hope you like them!!! :D

The difference between 🌧️CG!Rain and 🫀CG!Havik babysitting 🗡️Little!Reiko is that Rain is more stern & firm—knows when to put his foot down and say no when Reiko is going to go cause a wreck. Havik on the other hand actively encourages them and would let him join in on his chaos (that doesn't hurt anyone, of course! Just pranks. No bloodshed here).
Cue Rain shooting Havik the Dissappinted™ glare, but of course he just sighs and smiles at Reiko—he's little and tiny and who was he deny listening to Reiko's ramblings about what pranks he did while cleaning him?
(Havik, stop grinning, you are banned from inviting Reiko to your pranks)

DAY 1 || HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!
The character randomly chosen today (or 2 days ago for me now lol) is Reiko Ozaki! Present in Dearly Stars, Reiko is Eri’s Producer. She is a strict, hardworking woman who works alongs Eri to help her become a real idol. I really don’t know how many dearly stars spoilers I want to disclose but I guess you could say she has a deeper history with idols than one may think.
FUN FACT: She is the first iDOLM@STER character to be named Reiko. That shouldn’t be interesting but Reiko Takahashi became a character 2 years later. yay
It’s kind of funny that I get Reiko because I’ve been playing Eri’s route on Dearly Stars lately. I enjoyed drawing her decently enough, still getting used to drawing in concepts as it is a vector based program.
Oh yeah also this really isn’t every iDOLM@STER character who I’ll be drawing. I wanted a number close enough to 365 as possible so I didn’t put in characters with little screentime. The wheel I’m using does not include every specific anime producer nor does include adaptation exclusive characters like Yoshizawa. It also doesn’t have every puchidol. However, I might reconsider and add some of them later in some type of way.
The wheel has 368 characters and I take off the one I do for that day. The three extra are the Korean exclusive mobamas idols, but the listing I used didn’t list them with the CG roster so I had to add them in when I was making sure everyone was there (and make it so I draw one of them+another character I roll). I would create separate posts for each of them but I would draw both on the same day. I might roll an extra character on one of those days and make it so that two other characters that aren’t the KR mobamas 3 are drawn on the same day. Sorry if this doesn’t make sense I just don’t want to single those three out. There will likely be times where I miss a day and will do two anyways though.
Anyways enough yapping, I hope you have a great day.
here are the bonus photos:
please let me know if there’s any formatting issues, this is my first time posting on tumblr.

just off idolized visuals, who looks interesting? I know you could look at the wiki character page but they all show the initial moment that you meet them instead of how they present as idols
there are 190 but there are two cards for most girls here so you will see repeats
https://tiermaker.com/create/cg-perm-ssr-tier-list-438675
I do know a decent number of cinderella girls! I watched the anime they made. but if I'm just skimming these the ones that interest me are ai, yukari, tokiko, akira, megumi, natsuki, reiko, aki, chiaki, seira, rumi, rena, noa, and kanade

Okay so I finished watching the Ring, let's get this fucker started
So the beats of the movie are pretty similar, so if you read my play-by-play of Ringu, you more or less know the idea, and I'll be working more on the parts that the American version changes.
Awright.
First thing I noticed was the blue-greenish twilight filter. I swear to god, it looks so much like twilight especially right out of the gate. The whole film is washed out and the brightness of Ringu really doesn't echo here. I kind of don't like it partially because the darker atmosphere is a stereotypical horror movie thing, and to be honest, that's kind of my problem with a lot of The Ring. It's such a horror movie. I feel like they kept having to stop and go 'wait, this is a horror movie' during the script. It's shoehorned in, in a lot of places, and a lot of the shots are technically good but just don't... fit. Or at least, they feel like they had a quota to hit, instead of actually deciding that this was the best way to shoot the movie.
Anyway, the opening isn't quite shot for shot, but it's close. One note - no one in this movie seems to like each other. Especially at the beginning, it was jarring because all the characters in Ringu feel alive and connected to each other. In The Ring, everyone feels like self-centered douchebags.
The two girls from the beginning didn't feel like friends, they felt like Mean Girls extras. Rachel (Ringu's Reiko), the main character, is introduced yelling at her boss and coming late to pick up her kid Aidan after school, AND ignores the concerns her kid's teacher voices. Noah, Rachel's ex (I think boyfriend, not husband) and Aidan's father, treats Rachel like shit for the opening, clearly doesn't believe her about the tape, and acts like it's all no big deal and she's being an anxious bitch. Rachel's sister, the mother of the victim from the opening, doesn't even seem to really grieve her daughter's death - it feels like she skips the grief and goes straight to suspicion and anger. It's subtle, especially in some places, but the whole tenor of the movie shifts because of this characterization. It's such an American horror movie experience. They just don't like each other. It feels like everyone is in the line at the bank, tapping their foot impatiently for their turn at the counter.
There's still the same 'kid wanders the house alone' scene, and here, it's much more explicit that he's on some level following the girl's footsteps. The problem is, I don't think he's supposed to be psychic in this. I never got the feeling that Aidan had anything like that going on. It just felt like he was a weird kid, and all the strange occurences around him were Samara's (Sadako's) doing. And there's the same smash cut to the face of the victim, but it comes earlier, and it's just not the same because again the mother doesn't have the grief. It's not unsettling, it's just a jumpscare, and I think partially it doesn't hit as well because I just watched it this morning, but also the victims in The Ring have this pallid, distorted, bloated look to their bodies that just doesn't hold up. There's more CG, there's more effects, and it doesn't look as good because it's twenty years old. Ringu looks better again because it's makeup and practical effects, not filters or processing overlaid on the actor.
There's a recurring bit in The Ring where people who've seen the video start unconsciously drawing long hair over women's faces, and there's a lot of foreshadowing put into the movie. I know I asked for a little more in Ringu, but I felt that The Ring did too much here. Again, I'm sure if I hadn't just watched Ringu it would hit better, but it's also so on the nose. The cursed video, for example, is much more just straight evocative shots of weird things, like a box of fingers or a centipede crawling around, or a bunch of wriggling maggots, and also again just super on the nose shots of like, Samara's mother jumping off a cliff. I don't think it's bad, but especially at the beginning I kept going 'holy fuck we're 40 minutes into this 2 hour movie and they're already on day 5.' It just felt like they were speedrunning so much of the plot so that they could, again, fill the horror quota.
Rachel goes to the cabin, watches the tape. There's a super long scene in the office with a guy who I at first thought was Stephen King trying to do a magic trick at her. I will say, the cinematography when she's sitting down to watch the video is great, with the sunset creating a red patina over half the cabin.
She calls the ex over to look at the tape, he acts like she's worried over nothing and tells her not to worry. Oh yeah, he's a video analyst in this one, not a researcher/professor. The phone rings, and she doesn't answer it, and deletes the voicemail. He asks her to make him a copy and leaves.
She brings him the copy, they watch it together again, they're scrubbing through the video, and a woman shows up who's clearly dating Noah, and it gets real weird real fast, because Rachel's obviously jealous about it. This woman comes back in like one other scene, that doesn't feel important at all, and I'm left wondering why they had to include this beat.
Rachel goes to the hospital (read: asylum) that the other girl from the beginning was put in, and asks her about what happened to the victim. It's not great partially because I think the way mental health patients are used in horror movies is gross and exploitative, but also it's just kind of flat. The girl basically goes 'you're gonna die, and it's four days now,' and I go 'why the fuck do you know that'
There's a good scene where Rachel is scrubbing through the video again and pauses on a scene with a fly in it, and she notices that despite the video being paused, the fly is moving. She pinches her fingers on the screen and pulls the fly through by the wing. It's a good shot, it's a good touch, I'm very positive on the fly.
Rachel researches some of the things she's found in the video and tracks down the woman brushing her hair as Anna Morgan, a horse breeder on a small island. Her storyline is that she really wanted a kid but kept having miscarriages, she and her husband went off somewhere and just kinda came back with a kid, and then everything went to shit. All the horses kept drowning themselves, she jumped into the sea, etc.
Rachel asks her sister to watch Aidan for a few days, and while she's on the phone she starts gagging and pulls what I originally thought was black hair but is actually a sensor electrode thing out of her mouth. It's a scene that again feels like they went 'wait fuck this is a horror movie' and jammed in quick to get the gross-out.
Rachel travels to the island while her ex goes to the asylum where Anna was treated before she killed herself. On the ferry to the island, Rachel fucks around with a horse in a trailer and it panics and breaks loose, eventually jumping off the ferry and into the water. It's not a clean jump, either - the horse catches a foot on the railing and tumbles hard. It's either great prop work or effective CG because it looks good, and it also looks organic and nasty because it's such a clumsy fall.
Rachel finds Anna's husband while Noah breaks and enters into the records room. Anna's husband is a piece of shit, he's far less interesting than the old man in Ringu, but he does get a good line. He says "What is it with reporters? You take one person's tragedy and force the world to experience it, spread it like sickness" which y'know, themes, but also it kind of falls flat because he's just not worth the screen time. He rebuffs Rachel's questions and sends her away after she admits to having seen the video.
Rachel goes to the island's doctor to ask about Samara, and mostly it really is just 'why do we bash deadbeat dads when maybe the kid just sucks?' The doctor basically says 'the kid sucked, and we're all happy she's dead', and I felt like this whole character and scene was wasted.
Except, there's a really good exchange here that really doesn't hold water in the context of the scene, but it was such a good moment I have to praise it -
Rachel: "Was there anything wrong with [Samara]?"
Doctor: "You mean medically?"
Rachel: "I mean whatever you mean."
Rachel goes back to Samara's family house and snoops around. She finds a video of the 'treatment' Samara was getting that was like, prison solitary confinement vibes. They really put that little girl in an empty all white room with nothing to do for 14 hours straight. I found it much harder to sympathize with Samara in this one, but still, I was like 'man this poor fuckin' kid.'
As Rachel is watching the film of Samara in the psych ward, the father comes up behind her and hits her, before going upstairs and electrocuting himself in the bath. Again, it's a dumb scene, it feels forced, I don't get why he's trying to kill himself, and honestly I don't know why he's still alive! Out of anyone in the fuckin' world, why did Samara not kill this fucker as fast as she possibly could?
Noah shows up and he and Rachel go into the barn to find a little attic area with a bed and a shitty TV that apparently Samara's parents made her stay, instead of like, letting her sleep in the fuckin house???? They see a burned depiction of a tree on the wall and realize that they need to go to the cabin instead of being here. I think in both versions it's not really clear why the well Samara/Sadako is in is so far away from her family home.
I will say, at this point in the movie, there's like 30 more minutes to the movie and I've completely lost track of time. I'm not sure what day it is, I'm not sure how much time Rachel has left before her seven-day-deadline, and I don't think the characters know or care either! Her looming death seems completely sidelined in favor of the rapid-fire reveals, and I think it's a pacing issue because they really shoved all the important information into the last few days. In Ringu, there's a pretty steady feed of information over the days, and by the time they reach day seven, there's not much to do except go to the well and start searching.
Anyway, they get to the cabin, which is a full ferry ride away and who knows how much longer of an overland journey, it was night in the last major scene, and now the movie is reminding us how Rachel watched the movie at sunset. Again, I've lost the time frame, and I'm not worried that they're going to run out the clock because no one has been watching the clock for like the last half hour of the movie.
They break through the floor to find the well, open it up, and all this time, the nails in the floor are starting to rise up, there's water pooling, and the TV comes on. I'm sitting here thinking to myself, uh, Samara, you DO remember that Rachel's safe, right? What's going on here?
And then the whole fucking thing comes apart and I get so mad.
The floor drops and the TV rolls down into Rachel's back and knocks her down into the well. She doesn't choose to climb down, she's effectively pulled in. She opens her eyes and struggles to the surface and I'm struck by how fuckin' clean the water looks. Like, when she's above the surface, it looks grimy, but there's a number of shots where things in the water are crystal clear as soon as they're anywhere close to the surface.
Once again, Samara's fingernails are stuck in the wall, it looks good.
Rachel messes around in the water for a second and comes up with a handful of black hair. Samara's hand comes up and grabs her arm, and throws her into a flashback.
A flashback of Samara, standing in front of the well, singing, and Anna (which I was like, huh, not who I expected) comes up behind her and says 'isn't it beautiful. All I ever wanted was you' and THEN takes a piece of plastic and smothers Samara. She drops the girl into the well, and as Samara hits the water and eventually opens her eyes, she sees the lid of the well covering it up and blocking out the sunlight, showing us the titular ring.
Samara's body floats to the surface and Rachel scoops it up as the mark on her arm fades. Samara's body looks like a normal human, until Rachel strokes her forehead and says 'it's okay,' at which point the girl's body dissolves in a pretty bad CG effect. Looked not great.
At this point, Rachel's holding the skeleton, and she lets it fall back into the water.
I'll get mad about this later.
She stands there shivering in the water as Noah shouts down at her.
The cops show up, they're outside in blankets, and the worst fucking dialogue of the movie starts.
Rachel says [Anna] wanted that child more than anything else in the world, and says [Samara} just wanted to be heard, and then says "sometimes children yell or cry or draw pictures." And then she says "I want to go home."
And I'm like.
Damn.
Sometimes children DO be yelling or crying or drawing pictures. Not sure what the fuck that has to do with anything that you just experienced, but y'know.
They also explicitly say shit like 'I wonder how long you could survive down there,' beat, 'seven days.'
Again, too on the fucking nose for me.
And then they go home, and it keeps getting worse, because Aidan and Rachel are in bed and wake up and Aidan asks 'what happened to [Samara], is she still in the dark place' and Rachel says 'no we set her free' and Aidan sits up all freaked out and goes 'you helped her?' and Rachel says yeah and he says 'you weren't supposed to help her' and she says 'don't worry she's not going to hurt you'
And she pulls up his sleeve to see the hand mark on his arm and he says 'don't you understand Rachel she never sleeps'
And I'm like... I don't understand. The whole thing is that it doesn't matter if they went down into the well or not, because the video's still cursed. It's not like they reactivated the curse by setting her free or some shit. It's a beat that feels like they forgot? what the movie was about? Or at least, that they put in because they were worried you might have otherwise gotten up and left thinking the movie was over?
Anyway, Noah dies, it's a scene that again just doesn't hit because it's twenty years old, man. They have this overlay on Samara's actor, there's this glitch-teleport-jump she does that doesn't look good any more, and she just kind shrugs her shoulders as she walks? They should have put makeup on her, and they DON'T SHOW HER HANDS
Rachel shows up, finds Noah's dead body, cries and asks what she did that he didn't, and realizes that it's the copying and showing the tape to someone else.
She takes Aidan to make a copy of the tape, he says 'it's going to keep killing isn't it' and Rachel says 'it's okay you're going to be okay' and Aiden asks 'what about the person we show it to? what happens to them?'
And she just kinda... looks? at him? And then the movie ends?
Which to be honest, is better than what was supposedly in the original script, which was that Rachel sent the copy of the video to a convict on death row? But also apparently the DVD release ends with her taking the copy of the video and putting it in a video store, which at least is something real to end on. This ambiguity just doesn't feel good, and that's without even making the comparison to Ringu's ending!
I think overall, The Ring is a solid 6.5/10 horror movie. It's technically sound, it's gross and consistent, and every time I was like 'oh damn this is cool' it was always tempered with the feeling like, well, i watched the good one already.
I think it's fine? It's one more American remake that strips a lot of the soul and passion away for effects and thrills, and I think fundamentally fails to understand a lot of what I enjoyed about Ringu. It's the bones of the same story but Rachel drops the skeleton, and Reiko cradles it and lays her cheek against the skull.
None of these people care about each other.

OMG JUST FOUND THE SHAO HCS CAN WE GET SUM MORE OR A CONTINUE FROM THEM PWEEZ? 🙏
I got you!! :D (I'm gonna use Reiko as main CG still :3)

CG Reiko w/ Regressor Shao Hcs pt 2
🛡 As I’ve said before, bossy, bossy baby
🗡 He's very dependent on Reiko, but swears that Reiko's just clingy when Shao's small >:/
🛡 Shao's race isn't deliberately said, but i'm pretty sure he has some sort of dragon blood (not much but enough to give him some scales on his body)
🗡 This scale fact (hc) makes him very happy whenever he's dragon regressing
🛡 But means he probably has some sort of shedding thing he goes through for a small while once a year
🗡 He becomes very fussy during this time because while its not painful, it's really uncomfy >:(
🛡 Will require bathtime to help soothe and soak the skin
🗡 Also just loves bath time itself
🛡 But it has to be his bath because he's too big for normal ones 🥺
🗡 Sometimes he actually gets really upset over how physically big he is, thinks hes too tall or too old for age regressing
🛡 During these times, Reiko will let Shao sit on his lap and he’ll talk about how he’s just a baby, and he doesn’t need to think of all these icky thoughts, and that age regression is for everyone no matter how big or small, young or old someone it
🗡 To help emphasize the point, he’ll carry Shao around with princess or on his hip, he’s strong enough!!
🛡 He might even try to swaddle Shao with his blankie (Shao actually really enjoyed it, and he got a bunch of cuddles)
🗡 One of Shao’s biggest secrets is that he’s always wanted to try out diapers but is too scared to try (he has a reputation, he can't risk it ruined if someone found out)
🛡 The first time someone other than Reiko ever saw Shao regressed was when Shao’s blankie ripped
🗡 ^ My goodness, it was a mess . . . a disaster fire really
🛡 He was playing peek-a-boo with Reiko by throwing the blankie over his head and pulling it off, and it got caught on his thorns and ripped!!
🗡 There were a few seconds of silence before Shao bursted into tears (Reiko completely panicked, and no matter how much he tried, nothing calmed Shao’s crying)
🛡 Eventually Reiko got Rain (I like to believe they’re childhood friends), who knows how to sew, a secret skill of his Reiko uses whenever his clothes get damaged in battle
🗡 Shao sat teary eyed on Reiko’s lap as he watched Rain help his blankie feel better (and Reiko scratched Shao’s horns because they hurt a bit from being pulled by the blanket)
🛡 Shao doesn’t like Rain babysitting him, but he can be in the room while he’s small (Reiko MUST be there though!!! He does not like not having his protector)
🗡 Might be willing to have a playdate with Rain when Rain’s also small
🛡 Not when Rain's in middlespace though, he's scared Rain will be mean
🗡 Shao likes watching Rain make small shapes with his powers (Rain doesn’t like using his magic for ‘silly’ things, but he likes how happy and amazed Shao and Reiko get by it)
🛡 I said last time that Shao was a dragon regressor and I stand on that
🗡 Reiko has a lot of shiny things (mostly war trophies) and Shao will steal All. Of. Them.
🛡 The only things he’s not allowed to grab are very specific items that Shao gifted Reiko over the years, he cherishes them too much for them to be taken and will freak if he finds them missing or moved
🗡 Shao is usually a softer baby? Bratty and bossy, but likes calmer activities
🛡 But dragon Shao is more active, playing hide and seek with Reiko (he’s really bad at hiding because of how big he is so Reiko will purposely act like he can’t see him to make Shao happy), playing tag (which almost always ends horribly . . .)
🗡 Shao likes curling onto Reiko’s lap (and suffocating him) and receiving headpats :3
🛡 Shao has stolen some shiny things of others (Sindel’s earring, a necklace of Kitana’s) and Reiko’s taken the blame everything
🗡 Reiko personally lights rougher activities (like wrestling and
🛡 ^ Shao was wrestled him once and only once, and it was more just rolling on the ground because Shao wasn’t giving much energy because he’s too little (Reiko told him he was so strong for beating him!!)
🗡 Has decided that if Reiko suggests it again, he’ll play wrestle again (he likes the praise)

Mortal Kombat 2021 Movie Review (w spoilers)
Just wanted to get this off my chest now that the movie’s been released in America. I watched this on 8th April when it was first released in Singapore, and two more times the following week.
So, overall I give the movie about a 6.5-7/10 or C+. Acting: Decent Story: Average at best Action: Above average to Good Gore: Graphic but not as often or much Best highlights: Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Costuming
I’ll be referencing some comments by others about the movie, but this’ll all be my opinions. I reviewed the movie based on my understanding that it’s a low budget film before even watching the movie. I am also a fan of the game (though I do not play, I watched most of the lore)
-------
When I first watched the movie, I was excited. The intro showing Hanzo Hasashi’s backstory would be something familiar to fans of the game. As expected, his wife and child were killed, but as we know it, they have an extra baby girl who later survives and carries on the bloodline. At this point, I was already ‘eh’ because it was so predictable what happens next. I was already disappointed that they named the son ‘Jyubei’ in the subtitles, when the wife didn’t even utter his name in Japanese. In the game, Hanzo’s son is called Satoshi. But one can say that’s something petty.
Anyways, as it goes on, we meet Joe Taslim as Bi-Han. He’s menacing, he’s cocky and has the presence that fills the screen. Already, I was smitten. While some people were saying the movie is rushed, I’d say this part of the intro felt a little draggy. But, the fight scene after is great, and we see Hanzo and Bi-Han throw hands.
I’d have to say at this point: ALL fight scenes including Bi-Han/Sub-Zero were great. They’re the best. Every other fight scene with the other characters were decent but not great.
Then we get introduced to Cole Young. From the get go, I do not like new characters not in the lore. I’m that type of person who does not like original characters in fanfiction. And his story further made me feel that a lot of time was wasted on him. Mortal Kombat has story elements around family, yes, but it’s not central, and it made the movie too wholesome and not in a way that I feel implemented well. In my opinion, it made the movie a little cringey at times. I like Lewis Tan who plays Cole but unfortunately he’s been given a role that was completely unnecessary.
A Youtube reviewer said it best: Why make up an entirely new character when there’s a plethora of characters to choose from? Heck, if you want him related to Hanzo, you could have used Takeda or something (though yes i know he’s not related to Hanzo, but he could be like a distant cousin relative whatever, with Takehashi on one of this other parents side).
There’s Jax and Sonya - why not just use Sonya? She’s the one gathering all the information. They could have used her.
Anyway, moving on. We also meet Kano. He was good and I see a lot of people loved him. Personally I thought he was okay, but he was too comedic in my opinion and felt underwhelming. While funny quips and mockery are appreciated, he felt like what Liu Kang called him: A small, angry little bunny. Not at all what I’d expect of the leader of Black Dragon.
There was... it that supposed to be Reptile? I honestly do not know, but I don’t believe that’s the Reptile we know from the game, and more of a mindless monster that has Reptile’s abilities.
I loved Sonya in this movie. Jessica McNamee was amazing as her. One - she’s attractive as hell, and Two - she felt far more relatable than Cole Young. From her being a soldier living in her ‘shithole’, to her curiosity in trying to find out more about the Mortal Kombat tournament.
They look for Raiden’s Temple in the desert. This was a little slow and again, I say Kano just felt like a chump here. A try-hard doing his best to appear intimidating but failing.
Liu Kang appears. Kano won’t shut up. Liu Kang’s introduction was interesting and I liked it, but later on his monologues and exaggerated actions were so odd and ‘extra’ to me that I was cringing. I don’t know why they don’t just make him a normal guy who’s a Shaolin monk lol.
Raiden is as cranky as we know him in the game. He’s kinda dull here, but to be honest, so is he in the game, so I don’t mind it. I saw someone compare him to the 1995 version which while I enjoyed and appreciated, did not think he suited the game and movie. So Tadanobu Asano’s Raiden is fine to me! Also, shut up to the people who get on others’ case on the way they pronounce Raiden. In Japanese it’s Rai-den, not Ray-den, like they say in the game. Both are correct, so shut up.
Sub-Zero makes an entrance again, menacingly running down the hall and making me sploosh, and Kung Lao also makes an entrance. Here you can see how poor the CG is. This is where you can tell the budget is low and realise that all the sets we’ve seen so far is pretty small and closed.
The ‘arcana’ thing that they made up to explain their powers was honestly pretty smart and I quite liked it. It then becomes a training arc, which while understandably can be seen as slow, it’s quite needed for the story.
The villains in this story were sadly underutilised. Admittedly I am unfamiliar with Nitara and Reiko, so them being throwaway characters did not affect me. Kabal, while very charismatic, died but I felt it was a decent end. I personally wish they could have included him more. However, for Mileena and Goro, I could see the moment I watched it that people were gonna be mad. I’m not fans of either of them but I understood that they are major characters in the game. So for them to be offed that easily was... tbh very disappointing and quite insulting. I sincerely hope they will bring back Mileena for the next movie, experimented on and brought to life using Kitana’s blood or something.
But best villain? Obviously goes to Bi-Han/Sub-Zero. Honestly I went into the movie expecting to root for Scorpion but I ended up being so in love with Joe Taslim’s menacing and chilling portrayal of Sub-Zero. He’s soooo good. People said he was like a slasher film villain and I think they made a great choice doing so!
As for Cole - I’m still not a fan of him or his powers. I like they used tonfas, but as some called it - he has literally plot armour which, tru. Hahahhaa.
So finally after all that, we finally get to the last fight.
Sub-Zero is about to kill Cole then Scorpion is summoned. They both fight and actually one can see Scorpion is winning? He got more hits in than Sub-Zero (two stabs, a side slash and a throw from Scorp, meanwhile Sub got one slash and a throw) so I don’t understand why people thought he actually needed help from Cole.
Also, this is another major complaint about the ‘wholesomeness’. Why was Hanzo’s family killed but Cole’s family spared by Sub-Zero? Why couldn’t they just killed them off for extra weight to the story instead of making it so safe? I felt that would have redeemed Cole’s character as more of Mortal Kombat character if they did so.
But I really enjoyed the fight here. As I mentioned all fights that involved Sub-Zero are amazing and people not giving the credit to this fight scene are blind. I also saw a comment that said they were expecting ‘John-Wick level’ of fight. Both fair and unfair comment because: It’s a low budget movie and they are two different styles of movies. John Wick is more realistic while this one is more fantastical. Though for them to call this a Marvel level choreography... I’m not sure bc Marvel put a lot of money, so that means for their budget the MK movie did well? So IDK but I believe the fight choreography was good in this most especially in the Sub-Zero/Scorpion fights.
Fatalities were great, costuming were great and for the sets while small and enclosed they did good.
Story could have been better and I cannot stress how much I find Cole’s role completely pointless. Pacing wise I actually do not find a problem with it. I only wished for more fighting and less about ‘family’.
From the movie overall I understood it as to be a set up, and even before watching it, from the trailers, I somehow knew it was not going to have a tournament so I don’t know why all these people in comments are lamenting about the lack of a tournament. It feels clear to me that this is a set up movie and more are to come.
So while I have a lot of issues with this movie, I do think it’s a fun watch which is why I give it a pretty generous score imo.
Hopefully we’ll have more to come, improving everything in all aspects with hopefully a bigger budget!

Mortal Kombat!!! | REVIEW
Mortal Kombat has been a long-time favorite of my life. I can remember playing Mortal Kombat on the SNES when I was four and watching the 1995 movie for the first time when I was six. I was hooked. I continued to play the games and follow the crazy history that unfolded over the years. I was mainlining The Immortals’ Techno Syndrome for a week straight leading to opening weekend. Can the 2021 Mortal Kombat live up to the hype or will it be another Fatality for video game movies?
Mortal Kombat as a franchise has a long and overly complicated story, but luckily enough the movie only adapts the first game. Short synopsis of MK 1: Earthrealm is in hot water as Outworld looms with nine consecutive wins of the Mortal Kombat tournament. With a tenth win Outworld has the justification of invading Earthrealm. Protector of Earthrealm, Raiden, brings together Earthrealm’s champions to stop the looming invasion.
The 2021 film takes the overall story and plays around with its history to bring this world to life. Shang Tsung is set to win the tenth tournament even if he must cheat to do so. He sends his forces to Earthrealm to take out their champions. From the characters’ powers to their backstories, things are adapted to suit the new story. One of the major tweaks is the addition of a new kombatant Cole Young, played by Lewis Tan (Into the Badlands and Deadpool 2). His fish-out-of-water perspective gives the audience members who are not familiar with this world an easy way to get up to speed on his situation, and what the cost is if Outworld wins. His journey of finding his “arcana” and the will to fight makes him into one of Earthrealm’s warriors.
Arcana and the dragon marks are introduced to help explain how characters can shoot fireballs or lasers out of their eyes. The dragon mark claims them as champions and that gives them their unique superhuman abilities, arcana. It makes sense as to why people like Sonya Blade can fight against ice manipulating ninjas or reptilian humanoids.
From the fight choreography to the costumes, the movie goes to great lengths to ensure that the nearly 30 years of Mortal Kombat history is there for fans of the games. You can find multiple easter eggs splashed around the film from mention of characters like Bo’ Rai Cho to pictures of Kotal Kahn and Nightwolf. It gives spotlight to lesser-known characters like Nitara and Reiko and fanboy moments of “Oh, he did the thing! He did the thing”. Not to mention the main attraction of Mortal Kombat, the thing that created the ESRB rating system, Fatalities. It heartily deserves the R rating for how far it is willing to take to bring them to life in all its bloody glory. It is a far cry from the PG-13 and simple fight choreography of the 1995 version.
The story itself is good, but not the best. What can you expect from shoving an 8–10-hour game to two hours of runtime? The first and final thirds of the film are great, filled with action and story beats. The middle is kind of slow and bogs the momentum carried on from the first third of the film. The writing is a bit tongue in cheek with quotes and jokes, however they do not seem too corny or forced. Some slight CG special effects are a little wonky, but most of the time it is spot on and looks great.
The actors bring every character to life and make them feel incredibly special. Hiroyuki Sanada (Avenger: Endgame and The Last Samurai) brings that fiery fury to the hell wraith Scorpion. Joe Taslim (The Raid and The Night Comes for Us) brings that cold and cruel personality of Sub-Zero/Bi-Han. Finally, Kano, who steals about every scene he is in, is played by Josh Lawson (House of Lies and The Little Death). He brings out the best of the egotistical and thuggish leader of the Black Dragon crime syndicate.
The movie is a definite watch. It clearly shows a reverence for the source material while bringing some well-crafted additions to the expanding universe. The little details and rich history it's drawing from makes it all worth the price of admission, or if you already have HBO Max then add it to your list. Not a flawless victory but a great addition along with the 1995 film. Just forget about Annihilation. If you want more, do not worry, it heavily implies a sequel filled with more kombatants and more gory fun. Also, Joe Taslim is signed-on for like four more.
SCORE: 8/10

Mortal Kombat (2021) Review
Mortal Kombat is back in live-action with the beginning of a planned franchise of films. Following a slightly altered storyline to the lore new character Cole Young is a descendant of legendary warrior Hanzo Hasashi. Upon coming into contact with an old clan enemy he is forced into the Mortal Kombat tournament with the Earth and his family at stake.
Mortal Kombat is a 2021 video game film, it is produced by New Line Cinema and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. It is in theaters now and HBO Max until May 23.
Editor’s Note: Near complete to complete spoilers for Mortal Kombat and potential spoilers for the source material may be present in this review.
Mortal Kombat pays respect to it’s deep lore.
Video game movies are making a wild comeback and the latest among them is Mortal Kombat. While the film follows most of the plot of the video game it also inserts additional lore and characters. On the surface this isn’t too much of a problem in of itself. However it more often than not feels like the film chickens out of said originality midway through.
Historic characters take a backseat to new ones.
THE GOOD: Mortal Kombat opens with the historic war between Scorpion & Sub-Zero’s families in 1400s Japan. Sub-Zero kills Hanzo Hasashi’s wife and son leading to a battle in which the former wins. As Hanzo dies Raiden retrieves his surviving child in an effort to preserve the Hasashi bloodline for the future of Earth realm. The film then cuts to Cole Young, a family man and former MMA World Champion. Now he’s fighting in smaller independent circuits where he routinely loses. After his latest fight Jax introduces himself to Cole questioning his decision to fight in underground MMA scenes. While out with his family Cole is attacked by a very much alive Sub-Zero. Who has become much stronger since we last saw him.
Jax saves Cole and his wife & daughter and informs him of the truth of the Dragon imagery on his chest. He allows Cole and his family to escape while telling them to find Sonya Blade who has more details. As Cole & his family leave Jax fights Sub-Zero, but is easily beaten to near death with his arms severed. Cole sends his family off to a cabin as he meets Sonya. Sonya who has captured Kano (a black market criminal for hire) reveals to Cole that the symbol is an invitation to Mortal Kombat a deadly tournament with worlds at stake. She also states that Kano earned his invitation by luck killing the previous invitee. The three are attacked by Syzoth, but Kano kills him with Cole and Sonya’s help.
The trio travel to Raiden’s temple where Liu Kang awaits. He explains that the Mortal Kombat is an ancient tournament where control over worlds were put on the line. With each world having a team of Champions defending them. He introduces them to Kung Lao who like Liu is also an Earth realm Champion. Liu Kang tells the others that they need to train to unlock their unique power which will aide Earth realm. Sonya and Cole are reunited with Jax who’s healing from his injuries. During dinner a hostile Kano unlocks his power after being egged on by Kung Lao.
Raiden expresses doubt for the Champions being successful and Cole who’s worried for his family gets sent home. Returning to the cabin his family was held up in he’s suddenly attacked by Goro one of Outrealm’s Champions. Meanwhile, Shang Tsung the leader of Outrealm arrives at Raiden’s temple with several of his Champions. Including Sub-Zero, Milenna, Nitara, Reiko, and Kabal. Kano betrays Earth realm joining Outrealm and fights Sonya. She & Jax unlock their powers during battle with the former defeating Kano. Kung Lao kills Nitara with his hidden blade hat and Cole after unlocking his power kills Goro returning to the temple. Raiden reveals that Cole is a descendant of the Hasashi family angering Tsung & Sub-Zero.
Kung Lao sacrifices himself to save Cole as Raiden teleports Earth’s Champions to a safe zone. Cole suggests a plan in which Outrealm and Earth have a pre-tournament. Outrealm’s Champions are killed and Cole & Sub-Zero face each other at the MMA gym which Sub-Zero has incased in frost including his kidnapped family. Cole’s blood resurrects Hasashi who now goes by the moniker of Scorpion & they work together to defeat and kill Sub-Zero. Scorpion leaves telling Cole to keep their bloodline safe. Shang Tsung vows revenge taking the corpses of his warriors back to Outrealm. Raiden states that he is gathering more Champions for Earth and tasks Cole with finding Hollywood actor Johnny Cage.
Josh Lawson’s Kano is a scene stealer & it’s one of the film’s biggest issues.
The action of Mortal Kombat is some of the coolest you’ll see this. I may be reaching a bit, but there were times when the normal hand-to-hand combat reminded me of some of the fights in films like The Raid. I didn’t mind Cole’s character it made sense for the movie’s direction. Cole being an MMA expert was a nice modern touch up for the martial arts aspect of the franchise. The special effects were excellently done too. You know how these lower budgeted type of films tend to have CGI that looks noticeably like CGI (aka bad)? Even at a budget of $50 Million, of which I can only imagine went to the CG I never really saw any of it that just looked awful or wonky. Except for maybe a single instance with Syzoth. It’d have been easier to just use a humanoid ninja version of Syzoth honestly.
The story is fine, I like the idea of the unique powers having a backstory instead of just existing. That’s a neat layer that adds some sense into the world. Granted, it’s not necessary to do so, but the fact that they did it is kind of appreciated. And yes Kano ruled in this movie. His quips and jokes were almost always on. I do feel bad for most of the cast who felt like they were playing catch up with Lawson’s energy. I also have to commend the writers for going out of their way to feature Scorpion & Sub-Zero’s backstories. They were spread across several games and it was done fairly well here for a two hour film.
All the Mortal Kombat gore you can handle and then some.
THE BAD: Mortal Kombat some some good ideas, but it seems the movie loses confidence in itself quit a bit. For example, I mentioned earlier that I like Cole in the sense that him existing doesn’t bother me. However, Cole’s character direction kind of falls flat. Like him being there is cool, but there’s literally no reason why his role couldn’t have been given to Scorpion or Johnny Cage like in the original film. The former probably would have made for a much better movie honestly. Lawson as mentioned is awesome here, but it gets to the point where he completely outclasses the rest of the cast. And it really makes them look bad and dry. I also feel I have to say this respectfully as a fan of the source. I don’t like the idea of turning Liu Kang and Kung Lao who are arguably the main characters of the first handful of the games background characters. They could have given Jax’s role of informing Cole about the legend of Mortal Kombat to Liu, and they oddly do in the second act. It was also weird for the film to be called Mortal Kombat, but not feature the actual tournament. They do some makeshift pseudo-tournament.
Mortal Kombat is a decent video game movie that still has time to be a great one.
OBERALL THOUGHTS: While on the surface Mortal Kombat is probably what you’d expect from most video game films there is a lot to like about it. It follows the story closely enough even with the original direction effecting it. The action, fighting, and special effects are strong and well done. Unfortunately, the film suffers from unbalanced character direction and the impact said original story has on the future of this reboot’s franchise intentions. If the issues can be looked on in earnest I think Mortal Kombat has a genuine shot of being a good video game movie franchise. And I say that, because we’re undoubtedly getting at least one sequel. Otaku Dome gives Mortal Kombat a 70 out of 100.

Majutsushi Orphen Haguretabi Cast & Staff announced!
So last night, we saw the release of a new PV for the Haguretabi anime adaptation that is slated for January 2020. I have a few things to say about it and idk if anyone cares, so instead I’ll start with a list of the staff and cast that was announced alongside of it:
CAST
Orphen: Morikubo Shoutarou (Twitter) Cleo: Ookubo Rumi (Twitter) Majic: Kobayashi Yusuke (Twitter) Volkan: Mizuno Marie (Twitter) Dortin: Fuchigami Mai (Twitter) Childman: Namikawa Daisuke (Twitter) Azalea: Hisaka Youkou (Twitter) Leticia: Itou Shizuka Hartia: Ban Taito Komikron: Yasuda Rikuya Forte: Maeno Tomoaki (Twitter)
STAFF
Director: Hamana Takayuki Script: Yoshida Reiko Character design: Yoshida Takahiko Color design: Katsuragi Konzato Production design: Arai Kazuhiro CG: Kawatani Keisuke
So, it’s a very nice mixture of younger and more experienced seiyuu, I really like the selection! A bit sad that with the exception of Shou, nobody else was coming back, but after the drama CD(s) going a similar route I kind of expected that. And if you’re having a Fire Emblem mind like me, it’s also a little funny, like... Canas is teaching Byleth while he’s also old friends with Ferdinand and Líf. Okay then. Also, Komikron is a magical boy.

Review: ZOMBIE LAND SAGA
“ In 2008, high school student Sakura Minamoto is on her way to audition for an idol group when she is killed in a traffic accident. Ten years later, she discovers that she, along with six other "legendary" girls from various eras of Japan's history, are resurrected as zombies by Kotaro Tatsumi to save Saga Prefecture as the all-zombie idol group Franchouchou. “
Now this is the show I needed. Oh wait, I said I wanted to watch a romantic comedy? Well apparently this is the show I really needed because 10/10 would watch again, I adore this show to no end (let me enter the rap battle please). I do have a few nits to pick but let’s save that for...
Criticism:
The eye placement in this art style drives me straight up a wall, everything else about the art is cute but I just can't get use to those eyes....
DON’T JUST SKIP OVER HOW SHE BECAME A ZOMBIE! AT THE SHOW TAE BIT PEOPLE!!! ARE THEY GOING TO BE ZOMBIES????
Sakura has been dead for 10 years???? Did... did they bury her in her school uniform?? Where'd Kotaru get that from??? Also I learned 99% of Japanese burials are via cremation..... So... how does he have a body from the 19th century.... The old man he talks to in the bar in episode 11 "A One-of-a-Kind SAGA" acted like he knew Yuguri... How old is he??? How old is Kotaru??? Wasn’t he in high school with Sakura as Inui-kun??????????????????
Can't...cant they just say they are wearing stage makeup??? People in this world are very very eager to accept that zombies are real, like too eager...
....wh...what...the fuck.... why was the actual performance in CG? It looks...so bad.... eugh I already am not a fan of the idol genre and this really kills it for me more. Not to mention that no one in the crowd is CG!! What a fucking bizarre decision. WAIT, and then in episode 7 "But It's Zombiemental SAGA" Iron Frills’ performance is not in CG, BUT THEN FRANCHOUCHOU’S PERFORMANCE IS?!?!?!? AND EVEN WEIRDER ALL OF FRANCHOUCHOU’S PREFORMANCES ARE IN CG EXCEPT FOR THE ONE IN EPISODE 8 "Go Go Neverland SAGA" ???????????????????? AT LEAST KEEP IT CONSISTENTLY BAD!
I don’t understand why Romero goes from cute to scary. The girls do it when people see them as zombies, but Romero will just do it random from scene to scene...
How is that the same dog?!?!?!
That thing on Lily’s chest is supposed to be a heart??? They don’t even call it a heart until episode 7. It doesn’t look correct as a cartoon or anatomically correct heart....
I love the attention to detail and how each of their bows in the finale represents them but why is Junko’s bow all messed up??? Does that represent her???
Also while I love love love Lily’s episode, I don’t like her song at all, the talk singing at the beginning was just hard to listen to. My partner was listening while I was watching that episode and even he was like ‘eugh what is this song?’ The melody comes together in the end though!
This is a costume?????? YOU ARE TELLING ME THIS IS NOT A REAL ANTHROPOMORPHIC CHICKEN??????
Oh and I hate this guy
he’s a shitty manipulative asshole cop.
I am sorry what is this...
Is it supposed to represent Saki arising from the flames and being reborn as a zombie (or later doing the same stunt that killed her and then rising from those flames BECAUSE she was a zombie) either way this hair is too much and should stay in a show like Cromartie High School.
Positives:
Wow I wrote a lot of criticisms.... don’t take that to heart and a ton of them were lighthearted. Please let me reiterate here that this show is 10/10 must watch.
I really love how they just jump into it. Unlike School-Live! where they wait till the end of the first episode to do the crazy zombie reveal this show is like nah let’s do it a minute in!!!
The real opening sequence with the dark beginning and then fucking power rangers is hilarious.
Mamoru Miyano deserves the best voice actor role of all time as Kotaro Tatsumi. I usually don’t notice voice acting unless it’s really bad or if the character delivers a really emotional speech and I can feel them truly crying, but Mamoru Miyano gives one of the most insane voice acting performances I have ever heard.
Ugh I love how when they move their bodies make that gross zombie rigor mortis flesh sound, it sends shivers down my spine in the best creepy-cool way. Great attention to detail!!!
THEY ABSORB LIGHTNING AND SHOOT LASERS
Kotaru...made the horn blow noise in episode 8, they didn't have a sound effect for the horn...... true voice acting brilliance.
I fucking adore that all the bumps are promoting real Saga products and places! It took me awhile to realize that is what they were doing. They are truly trying to revitalize Saga. The attention to detail is so great!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reiko had Saki’s Tamagotchi this whole time.... I’m gonna cry (though she did not keep it alive). Speaking of which this show does some of the best balancing between it’s beyond out there comedy and it’s heart-wrenchingly sad moments. For example, when Sakura is in her depression at the end of the show; I totally understand where she is coming from and don’t disagree with her feelings in any way. Who wouldn’t give up in her position?
Speaking of which this show is downright beyond hilarious, sometimes I can’t believe how they pull it off so well....
Lily’s slippers <3
Junko’s singing voice is insane, the most beautiful int he show. It’s hard to look up if that was her real voice actor (Maki Kawase)? I only question it because Junko’s speaking voice is so much higher then her deep beautiful singing voice that its hard to believe.
Lily Hoshikawa is a real trans girl. This is no fucking trap bait here folks. The dream is now tangible and I LOVE it!!!
I feel like a lot of idol shows really die for me because all their girls are just the boring same. There’s 50 million of them and I don’t care about a single one but in this show all these characters are so different and unique that I love all of them.
Verdict:
GO WATCH THIS SHOW
