My Blackened Fingertips & Metalocalypse!
Posted: October 6, 2006 Archived from BonnyTymePyrate’s Journal Archives
Greetings my Muffin Loves!
Did you know that you can vote for little ME on the Orkus website? One sweet fan just told me about this, and of course you ought only to vote for me if you wish to, but you CAN let Orkus know what your top three albums and songs are, whomever they might be, and remember that you can’t complain about the music scene unless you participate in making it better! I can tell you first hand that Orkus is one magazine the REALLY gets it, so do give them your feedback.
VOTE FOR YOUR FAVE MUSIC AT ORKUS!
A quick thank you to all of you who have purchased my poetry book/CD, I had no idea poetry was so popular these days;)…really, thank you for reading my rhymes (and rants).
I’ve been shredding for 6 hours straight…there’s something sneaky I’m working on that I shall finally be allowed to announce to you on the Euro Chat, Oct. 15…but in the meantime, all I can show you is the evidence…look at my poor blackened fingers…I LOVE IT! It’s sadly true - I do estimate my self-worth directly by the fucked-up-ness of my fingertips.
Oh, and documented by my new camera that I have AT LONGEST LAST obtained to replace mine that was stolen in the infamous robbery, so I can now resume the task of documenting the remotest details of my life;)…
Love & Bloody Crumpets from the Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls, EA
PS! Did you know that I’ll be on METALOCALYPSE again this Sunday night? And that you can see the complete episode online TONIGHT? I’ve got a rather large part (I AM the London Philharmonic) and even a credit, aren’t they sweet! I’ll tell you more about this tomorrow if the Asylum permits, because you’ll never believe what violin I recorded this on!

Any recommendations for a person trying to learn Greek?
Yes, definitely! I also wrote a post on learning Modern Greek online.
I am not sure what your native language is or if you know any other languages. I studied German before Greek, and so I found Greek grammar very easy in comparison.
To start with, it's slightly more complex than Spanish for English native speakers since it uses a case system (changing noun, adjective, and article endings). But I found the patterns fairly regular and easy to remember! So it is not stressful at all. And since many words are similar between English and Greek, you will find it easy to pick up vocabulary.
For learning, this was what I did:
A1/A2
Timeframe: 9-12 Months, Depending on how fast you go
Tools:
Duolingo: 5-6 lessons/1 crown a day, or 30 minutes
Rosetta Stone: 3 lessons a day, or 30 minutes
Language Transfer Greek: 1-2 lessons a day, 10-20 minutes
LingQ: Free reading, when chilling out
When you finish Duolingo and Rosetta Stone materials, watch Eisai To Tairi Mou on Youtube. The wonderful George has subbed the whole series in English.
For textbooks, I used Take Off In Greek. I did 1 lesson a week after completing Duolingo/Rosetta/etc. This takes about 3 months. There is an audio CD, which you may need to buy separately. I'm not sure.
I also started tutoring while working on the textbook. I meet with Georgia on Italki, who is amazing.
B1/B2
I'm still working on this. 😉
Colloquial Greek is a good textbook here. It's very fast, though. Lots of vocabulary. Routledge also has a Modern Greek Reader, which is advanced but quite good.
But if you want in-depth resources, look at "publications" from Omilo.
Lydia is a good review of A1/A2, all dialogues. They also have workbooks on verbs, Greek music, podcasts, etc. Their B1/B2 book is Fiyame, and it's all in Greek.
At this point, I would work through either Colloquial or Fiyame while working with a tutor 1-2x a month or more.
There is also a Greek Mastodon server - https://kafeneio.social/explore
I am not on this server, but I follow and interact with many people on it. I also use Greek as my default language. 😊
University of Athens
I want to point out that there is an affordable learning course from the University of Athens. It is an online course. They have multiple language courses, but they have a good deal.
Their basic level course is 150 EURO, but you can get it for less. If you buy one of their culture courses, many of which are 100/120 EURO, you can get the Greek course free. The culture courses are taught in English.
I hope this is all helpful! I find Modern Greek rather fun and easy to digest. So far, the grammar is not very difficult. And many of the A1/A2 resources are free or low-cost. Rosetta Stone can be bought for $167, I think, and be used for multiple languages.

Random Rolo Ramblings 6: Kururugi and Canon
My intention was to write a few lines about the relationship between Rolo and Suzaku and post them around Suzaku's birthday. Well, it did not happen quite like that, but here they are. Admittedly, there is not really much to write about as far as the series canon goes, and here I would already like to digress a little: By '(series) canon' I mean everything that is officially part of the Code Geass story (people, places, events) as it unfolds in the TV series, not the recap films, which divert from the series canon and partly tell a different story. You can consider them a form of Code Geass elseworld or parallel universe/alternate timeline (apparently Genesic Re;CODE did that) or just see them as a separate movie canon which includes Lelouch of the Resurrection. (Correct, 'canon' is the second main topic of this article.)
As far as the Geass series canon goes, it certainly includes R1, R2 and also Akito the Exiled. I would also add the picture dramas, but that is a matter of debate and one could argue that their canonicity is not on the same level as that of the series' episodes. There are also the drama CDs, but, like I wrote before, these are just too far out there to be part of the official story. There may be official books that Sunrise considers canon, but my personal philosophy is that when we talk about films or TV shows, only what's on the screen is canon.
So what about Suzaku and Rolo? If we follow the show's internal chronology, they first meet in the final scene of Akito the Exiled. We get two reaction shots of Suzaku's face, first when Rolo enters the room, accompanied by the two Geass Order guards, then after he tells him that Charles has 'granted' 'Julius Kingsley' another audience. (By the way, look how tall he is in comparison to Suzaku. Must be the boots.) In both cases, Suzaku looks both quite angry and extremely wary. In the first case, Suzaku even makes a hard-to-define moaning sound that sounds both apprehensive and annoyed. In other words, he does not seem happy to see Rolo at all. He might be uncertain at first whether the rescue party are friend or foe, but even after Rolo has made it clear that they are on his side, he looks as happy as an employee who hates his boss and is told that he can go back to work now. This may have nothing to do with Rolo as a person, but with the unpleasantries that await Suzaku and Lelouch, but to me this look also says "Who's that creep they've sent to pick us up?"
Luckily, there are no hard feelings between Suzaku and Rolo in R2 despite this encounter, and this is obviously because R2 was produced before Akito. There is only one conversation between Suzaku and Rolo (and Villetta) in the OSI's secret control room, (which I have covered before, more than once, actually). While Rolo and Villetta have more or less always treated each other as equals, Suzaku clearly acts as the one in charge. Everyone is very polite, but Suzaku seems to be doubtful about the effectiveness of their surveillance, which triggers a response from Roll that makes him appear a little offendes, but secretly he is certainly worried that Suzaku might find out that Lelouch has regained his memories (and that he has changed sides). In a different world, to Star Trek, they may be friends, at least they don't hate each other, but in this situation, Rolo mostly regards Suzaku as a threat, which is why he even offers Lelouch to kill him. When Suzaku arranges a phone call with Nunnally to figure out whether Lelouch has regained his memory, Rolo thwarts his plans with his time-stopping powers. Apart from that, we see him giving Suzaku wary sideways glances, and that, to my knowledge, is about it. Not much, given the fact that older official artwork often shows Lelouch, Suzaku and Rolo as a kind of love-hate-whatever triangle.
What I would really like to know is what happened between the trio's journey home from Euro Britannia and Rolo's/Suzaku's arrival at Ashford. Didn't they have any conversation about 'Julius' resp. Lelouch? It would have made sense for Suzaku to brief Rolo about Lelouch's character traits so that he knows how to handle him and how to play the role of the little brother convincingly. Moreover, the Vincent's design is based on the Lancelot's, would Suzaku not be the perfect tutor for Rolo as a Knightmare Frame pilot? That would also explain Rolo's piloting skills. (Wouldn't it be fun if Lloyd was also involved? Maybe Rolo had a reason to call him "pervy four-eyes" in that infamous sound episode.)
Of couse there is that slightly weird scene in the second recap movie where Bismarck introduces Suzaku to Rolo (who is dressed like an accountant and looks as if he hadn't had any sleep for a week and not seen any daylight for a month, quite the contrast to his Akito outfit and posture) and Villetta. Here it is made more obvious than in R2 that Suzaku is in charge of the operation. In this scene it is also acknowledged that Suzaku and Rolo have met before, and maybe Suzaku's bad memories are the in-story explanation for Suzaku's so bluntly (and rudely) addressing Rolo's faulty Geass, which is one of the things I hated about this scene, the other one being Rolo's new alias ('Nebiros'/'Neblos'). Rolo's resentful look is more than understandable. I know why the writers made Suzaku say that: they needed a quick way to establish Rolo's weakness, but it still seems so out of character for someone like Suzaku. (I like Suzaku thanking Rolo for rescuing them better, even though he did not look particularly grateful when Rolo freed him and Lelouch from prison.) Villetta's defending Rolo and praising his skillfulness, on the other hand, is perfectly in character for her. Anyway, this scene does not contradict series canon, so I can potentially accept it as "this is what happened" to fill a gap in the story, I'm just not sure if I want to.
Which is why I am now turning to the readers. How do you personally deal with the canon problem, in Code Geass and otherwise? After all, reboots, recaps, remakes etc. are a pretty common phenomenon in the world of anime and elsewhere. Do you want to have a rigid canon or do you like to see alternate/new/fresh versions of the same story? What is your personal Code Geass canon, the two seasons of the TV show, Akito, the recap films, Lelouch of the Resurrection, the mobile games? Please let me know and thank you for reading all this, these articles are called "ramblings" for a reason.
P.S. Sorry for mostly using screencaps that I have used before.

ARCA. SIRACUSA - Associazione Rinascimento Culturale Archimedeo
Euro Med Festival - 2024 Tonino Accolla
Nona edizione del Premio Tonino Accolla. Siracusa/Noto 29 – 30 giugno e 1 luglio 2024.
************************************

The new Spanish Collector's Edition release of Mirai Nikki is chock-full of goodies
It was just last August that the first Spanish dub of Mirai Nikki was first announced by SelectaVision (alongside the first Spanish dub of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and its follow-up film). And now those Spanish dubs are available on blu-ray and DVD in Europe... along with a really impressive Collector's Edition for Mirai Nikki!
BEHOLD! It's crazy how fast SelectaVision went from announcing this set to fully releasing it. I actually missed the entire announcement window and then BOOM, it was already out when I learned about it.
Items #1 and #2 in the above image are just the box and the actual disks, which actually include the test OVA that predates the series. And while that's a neat inclusion, I think the most compelling content is the rest of the items included in the set.
#3 is a soundtrack CD with 20 tracks from the series.
#4 is a "mini-container box" for the disks (for some reason).
#5 is a series of 9 "Maxicards" — Sakae Esuno illustrations printed in a large size.
#6 is is a 68x48 poster with different artwork on each side.
#7 is a set of die-cut character stickers.
#8 consists of 19 trading cards (made from 9 'card models,' whatever that is).
#9 is a replica of Yuki's signature beanie, of course.
#10 is a 40-page booklet containing character sheets, background information, soundtrack details, and an image gallery.
At a price of 120 Euros, this doesn't come cheap... but I still feel tempted to get one for myself. That asking price actually feels justified (IMO) in light of all that's included! I'm not sure if I'll take the plunge, but either way? I hope we ALL get to see the contents of that 40-page booklet one day.
By the way, the standard edition has different cover art than the collector's set. It looks like this:
I admit I don't care for SelectaVision's cover choices. I think Japan, the U.S., and the UK have all produced better cover art for the series. But hey, what does that really matter? It's the content that's the meat of the package — not the box.

Service sector union PAM has issued a warning of a large-scale strike if negotiations with the Finnish Commerce Federation regarding worker's wages fail to reach an agreement.
The strike could affect some 20,000 employees and 185 locations across Finland, tabloid Ilta-Sanomat (siirryt toiseen palveluun) (IS) writes.
"Companies in the retail sector are making good profits and at the same time their workers have to cut corners to make sure their wages are enough to live on. Workers are entitled to a decent pay rise," union leader Annika Rönni-Sällinen said in a PAM press release.
The union is calling for a pay rise of roughly 200 euros per month, according to IS.
If no agreement is reached, workers will commence a three-day strike in 25 supermarkets from 6 February, followed by another strike between 9-11 February in 160 locations.
"The Finnish Commerce Federation has remained reluctant to discuss a wage increase that would ensure workers' purchasing power. We hope that the strike warning will now speed up negotiations," Rönni-Sällinen said.
The Finnish Commerce Federation reacted to the strike warning by refuting the claims.
A release published by the lobby organisation read: "We had only discussed the draft texts. The next step in the negotiations would have been a discussion on salaries. Contrary to PAM's claims, the Finnish Commerce Federation had promised to respond to PAM's wage increase proposal during the next scheduled meeting on Thursday."
Unused Covid medicine supplies
A number of papers carry an STT report on Monday morning regarding the sparsely-used Covid drug Paxlovid.
Tampere-based Aamulehti (siirryt toiseen palveluun) writes that of the 15,000 packages delivered to Finland, only about one fifth of supplies have been utilised since the drug was taken into use last summer.
Paxlovid is the first oral Covid medicine to earn marketing authorisation from the European Medicines Agency, the paper writes.
Currently, only adults belonging to certain risk categories are eligible for Paxlovid in Finland. Meanwhile, the number of received Covid vaccines can also affect eligibility, according to Helsingin Sanomat (siirryt toiseen palveluun), who also reported on the story.
Helsinki and Uusimaa Hospital District's (HUS) deputy chief physician Eeva Ruotsalainen told STT that the target group should be expanded to also include fully vaccinated at-risk people.
"International research has shown that vaccinated people also benefit from the drug when they are at risk of certain diseases. The Finnish policy is not fully in line with European guidelines," Ruotsalainen said, adding that guidelines and communication about the guidelines regarding the use of the drug in Finland should become clearer.
MP injured
Tabloid Iltalehti (siirryt toiseen palveluun) (IL) reports on an incident involving MP Sari Tanus (CD), who tripped, 'chin-first,' while climbing the steps of the Parliament House on Thursday afternoon.
The 58-year-old suffered a concussion after the accident and will be on sick leave at least for a week, according to IL.
"It could have been much worse. With such a strong force, chin-first…" Tanus commented to the paper, adding that "next week I have a lot of important things to do and it would be good to be at work, but for now I'm getting myself in shape."
She added that she only suffered some mild pains and was recovering at home.
Tanus was elected into parliament in 2015. She will be running as a candidate in next spring's parliamentary elections.

Look, there was a time in my life when my mental health was so bad that I couldn't take care of anything, so eventually my bank account run dry and couldn't apply for social security stuff due to not being able to do much of anything. I'm to this day glad that my landlady at the time didn't throw me out. But back to topic. No money meant, no food. So I was literally starving for a while there. Getting by with maybe a Euro per day, scrunched up by selling CDs/DVDs of my collection, every little cent I've ever stuffed into my piggy bank and the occasional money gift by (in the dark, because I masked my problems until I really truly couldn't anymore) family. One Euro a day back then got you two small cans of tomato paste and a 6 pack of pre-backed bread rolls at a discount store. Or a 1 kg pack of rice. Or a ready to assemble thing of spaghetti. I had some onions in the pantry which I added here and there to whatever I scrunched up. Vitamins, you see. Some dried herbs and spices from the pantry for added (imagined or not) nutrional benefit. Until everything was gone. I had a normal weight before. Maybe a bit on the upper end of that scale. At the end, I was down to underweight. From the outside I was looking snatched, fit. But the truth was that my menstruation cycle was at the point of barely existing anymore. Think 1-2 day periods. My stomach had shrunk down to basically hold nothing anymore, to deal with the hunger. I was constantly freezing. My physical energy levels were basically non-existend. Whenever I had something to eat, my body rebelled with diarrhea. My mental health, well, I had basically given up already, just slowly wasting away. And then my landlady had enough of waiting for my rent and due to me being in the same apartment ever since I finished school, she had the phone number of my mother. Who then came and kicked me back into shape. Not necessarily a healthy way to deal with it, but fast and efficient. Also thanks to the German social security system. I had a loan for my rental debt, and a debt councellor for the rest. I was able to feed myself again. But my body remember the starvation. It does to this day. I have gained so much weight as a result, because whateve I not immediately need my body stores as fat. So the point I'm trying to make is: Thin people are just in a lot cases just as unhealthy, if not more so, than fat people. Because weight basically only tells you if you have fat stortage or not. That's why the BMI as a concept is bullshit and isn't used in a lot of countries. And doctors/nurses mistreating you because of your weight need to give it to you in writing, so you can kick their ass.
Diet companies won’t tell you this but starving yourself is a lot worse for your health than overeating
