Dimethyl Ether: A Versatile Fuel for a Sustainable Future
Dimethyl ether (DME) is emerging as a key player in the pursuit of sustainable energy solutions, offering versatile applications across various industries. This clean-burning compound holds promise as an alternative fuel and a critical component in transitioning away from conventional fossil fuels. In this article, we delve into the properties, production methods, applications, and environmental benefits of Dimethyl ether, exploring its potential to reshape the global energy landscape.
What is Dimethyl Ether?
Dimethyl ether, with the chemical formula CH3OCH3CH_3OCH_3CH3OCH3, is a colorless, odorless gas at standard temperature and pressure. Its molecular structure consists of two methyl groups connected by an oxygen atom, giving it a unique combination of chemical stability and reactivity. DME is highly flammable, liquefies under modest pressure, and possesses physical properties similar to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
Production of Dimethyl Ether
DME is synthesized primarily through two pathways: direct and indirect synthesis.
Direct Synthesis: This process involves reacting synthesis gas (syngas), a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, in the presence of a bifunctional catalyst. The reaction simultaneously forms methanol, which is then dehydrated to produce DME.
Indirect Synthesis: This involves a two-step process where methanol is first produced from syngas and subsequently dehydrated to form DME. This method is widely adopted due to its simplicity and existing infrastructure for methanol production.
Innovative technologies are now focusing on producing DME from renewable sources such as biomass and municipal waste, enhancing its sustainability profile.
Applications of Dimethyl Ether
DME's unique properties make it suitable for a range of applications:
Fuel Alternative:
Transportation: DME serves as a clean alternative to diesel fuel, offering high cetane numbers and eliminating soot emissions during combustion. Vehicles designed or retrofitted for DME are gaining traction in regions focusing on decarbonization.
Cooking and Heating: DME can replace LPG for domestic cooking and heating purposes, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Aerosol Propellant:As a non-toxic and ozone-friendly alternative to traditional propellants, DME is widely used in personal care products, paints, and pharmaceuticals.
Chemical Feedstock:DME acts as an intermediate in the production of valuable chemicals like olefins and dimethyl sulfate, contributing to the industrial sector.
Power Generation:In power plants, DME can serve as a substitute for natural gas or coal, reducing harmful emissions and supporting cleaner energy production.
Environmental and Economic Advantages
One of DME's standout features is its environmental friendliness. When burned, it produces minimal particulate matter and significantly lower levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx) compared to conventional fuels. Moreover, its sulfur-free nature ensures no formation of sulfur oxides (SOx), a major contributor to acid rain.
Economically, DME offers cost-effective benefits, especially when derived from abundant or waste-based feedstocks. Its adaptability to existing fuel infrastructure, such as LPG storage and distribution networks, further reduces implementation costs.
Challenges and Future Prospects
Despite its potential, widespread adoption of DME faces hurdles such as production scalability, storage, and transportation challenges. Investments in renewable DME production and government incentives for green energy adoption could accelerate its market penetration.
Conclusion
Dimethyl ether stands at the crossroads of innovation and sustainability, offering a cleaner, efficient, and versatile energy solution. As technological advancements refine its production and applications, DME has the potential to significantly reduce humanity’s carbon footprint, paving the way for a greener future. By embracing this promising compound, we can move closer to achieving global energy sustainability goals.

From “USPS is Falsifying Safety Docs As Its Workers Die Of Heat” by McHam Investigative Reporting Fellow Josephine Lee, in the Texas Observer:
USPS MAIL CARRIER HEAT-RELATED FATALITIES 2012-2023 (SOURCE: OSHA)
July 24, 2012, Independence, MO: John Watzlawick died delivering mail when the temperature hit 102 degrees.
July 6, 2013, Medford, MA: James Baldassarre died from a heat stroke. The temperature was 94 degrees; the heat index was 117.
July 11, 2017, Charleston, WV: Ronnie Bowles died after experiencing heart problems induced by heat stress. The heat index was 88.
July 6, 2018, Woodland Hills, CA: Peggy Frank died in a non-air-conditioned mail truck. The temperature hit a record-setting high of 115.
July 22, 2020, Washington, D.C.: A mail carrier died in a non-air-conditioned vehicle. The high temperature was 94 degrees, and the heat index was 104.
June 17, 2021, San Jose, CA: Dalvir Bassi died from a heat stroke. The temperature was 94 degrees.
June 20, 2023, Dallas, TX: Eugene Gates died when the temperature hit 98 degrees with a heat index of 116.
After Watzlawick’s death, USPS agreed to a limited heat-illness prevention program that would only include Independence, Missouri. The program wasn’t instituted nationally until May 2018. By then, 62 more USPS carriers around the country had been hospitalized for severe heat-related illnesses, according to the Observer’s analysis of OSHA records. At least two others had died.
In the summer of 2020, mail carriers were dealt a blow after USPS won an administrative law judge decision that overturned an OSHA penalty of $511,000 for five heat-related injuries. Without a specific OSHA standard for heat safety, judges decided that the mail carriers’ unprotected exposure to extreme heat did not qualify as a “hazard likely to cause death or serious physical harm” under OSHA’s general duty clause, which requires employers to provide general protections for a safe workplace.
But, according to OSHA records, from 2015 to 2022, heat-related injuries accounted for 173 of 1,200 severe injuries—16 percent—among USPS carriers that required hospitalization. This does not include the heat illnesses experienced by mail carriers during the extreme heat this summer. According to the data, Texas mail carriers experienced the most hospitalizations from work-related heat illnesses. The state had 28 recorded incidents, compared to 10 in Nevada, which came second.
Notably, even though USPS is not the largest employer in the United States.—it employs roughly half the workers at Walmart, Amazon, or McDonald's—its workers reported the highest number of severe workplace injuries overall, 1,200 over that same time period.

All the elements of the periodic table in the Kichwa language
Jose E. Andino-Enríquez, Manuel A. Andino-Enríquez, Francis E. Hidalgo-Báez, Sisa P. Chalán-Gualán, Santiago D. Gualapuro-Gualapuro, Simone Belli and Michelle B. Chicaiza-Lema recently published in the Journal of Chemical Education a proposal to adapt the names of the 118 elements of the periodic table to Kichwa (Adaptation of the Periodic Table to Kichwa: An Ecuadorian Native Language; J. Chem. Ed., 2022 99 (1), 211-218, DOI: 10.1021/acs.jchemed.1c00383).
The authors explain that the Kichwa lacks scientific tools to respond to educational needs, triggering the gradual loss of intercultural diversity. To adapt the periodic table to Kichwa, they took into account the different linguistic variations of the language and the opinion of the speakers. This is the adaptation compared to the Spanish version, the language most widely spoken in Ecuador:

DAILY SCRIPTURE READINGS (DSR) 📚 Group, Tue July 09th, 2024 ... Tuesday of The Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time, Year B
Reading 1
------------
Hos 8:4-7, 11-13
Thus says the LORD:
They made kings in Israel, but not by my authority;
they established princes, but without my approval.
With their silver and gold they made
idols for themselves, to their own destruction.
Cast away your calf, O Samaria!
my wrath is kindled against them;
How long will they be unable to attain
innocence in Israel?
The work of an artisan,
no god at all,
Destined for the flames—
such is the calf of Samaria!
When they sow the wind,
they shall reap the whirlwind;
The stalk of grain that forms no ear
can yield no flour;
Even if it could,
strangers would swallow it.
When Ephraim made many altars to expiate sin,
his altars became occasions of sin.
Though I write for him my many ordinances,
they are considered as a stranger’s.
Though they offer sacrifice,
immolate flesh and eat it,
the LORD is not pleased with them.
He shall still remember their guilt
and punish their sins;
they shall return to Egypt.
Responsorial Psalm
---------------
PS 115:3-4, 5-6, 7ab-8, 9-10
R. (9a) The house of Israel trusts in the Lord.
or:
R. Alleluia.
Our God is in heaven;
whatever he wills, he does.
Their idols are silver and gold,
the handiwork of men.
R. The house of Israel trusts in the Lord.
or:
R. Alleluia.
They have mouths but speak not;
they have eyes but see not;
They have ears but hear not;
they have noses but smell not.
R. The house of Israel trusts in the Lord.
or:
R. Alleluia.
They have hands but feel not;
they have feet but walk not.
Their makers shall be like them,
everyone that trusts in them.
R. The house of Israel trusts in the Lord.
or:
R. Alleluia.
Alleluia
---------
Jn 10:14
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
I am the good shepherd, says the Lord;
I know my sheep, and mine know me.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel
---------
Mt 9:32-38
A demoniac who could not speak was brought to Jesus,
and when the demon was driven out the mute man spoke.
The crowds were amazed and said,
“Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.”
But the Pharisees said,
“He drives out demons by the prince of demons.”
Jesus went around to all the towns and villages,
teaching in their synagogues,
proclaiming the Gospel of the Kingdom,
and curing every disease and illness.
At the sight of the crowds, his heart was moved with pity for them
because they were troubled and abandoned,
like sheep without a shepherd.
Then he said to his disciples,
“The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few;
so ask the master of the harvest
to send out laborers for his harvest.”

FOCUS AND LITURGY OF THE WORD
It is early July, historically my favorite time of the year. Although I would not qualify as a fireworks enthusiast (I’ve had too many pets for whom this tradition is torture), I do love the sentiment of freedom and independence to pursue the best for our relatively short lives on this earth. God gives us this one amazing life. We can never know when it will end. Our task is to challenge ourselves with what we might do with it.
Today’s reading from Hosea is thus challenging. Hosea is one of two prophets recorded in the Old Testament who lived and worked in the northern kingdom of Israel shortly after the split between the northern and southern territories of what was the united kingdom of Israel in ca. 920 BCE (the other is Amos). The Old Testament teaches that God’s covenantal relationship with the Israelites extends through the Davidic covenant in the southern kingdom of Judah. As a prophet, Hosea speaks for God and, thus, represents the opposition to the reigning party in the northern kingdom, which he understands to be off base from God’s plan.
In today’s reading, God speaks through Hosea to ask us to beware of those who pursue power for power’s sake. Such leaders tend to construct idols as red herrings; i.e., what we might today call false flags, to advert attention such that we do not grapple with the real issues at stake. Hosea challenges us to think critically and discern true motives and aspirations before we make our decisions. God calls us to break through the rabble and find God’s true voice—and sometimes there is a lot of rabble!.
The reading from Matthew’s Gospel tells us just what God’s true voice is. In Matt 9:32–39, Jesus heals a man who has been ravaged by “a demon.” Many are amazed, but others, the Pharisees, the leading teachers of the time, are suspicious. They wonder if all this is a plant to advance the work of evil. Matthew tells us that Jesus continues his ministry, unencumbered by what we might call “the Haters.” Instead, moved with compassion for the people, he followed God’s call. In a paraphrase of Maya Angelou’s wisdom, “nevertheless, he persisted.” And his faith in God’s plan eventually changed world. How cool is that?
Jesus laments the scarcity of laborers for the harvest. That’s our call to step up. What might we do? Vote? Serve? Pray? Volunteer? Unlike our biblical forebears, we have so many options. As some would say, “You do you!” Listen for God’s voice, explore your calling(s), find what that is, and do you! God’s plan includes every one of us contributing in all the myriad ways our gifts provide.

SAINT OF THE DAY
Saint Augustine Xhao Rong and Companions
(d. 1648 – 1930)
Saint Augustine Zhao Rong’s and Companions’ Stories
Christianity arrived in China by way of Syria in the 600s. Depending on China’s relations with the outside world, Christianity over the centuries was free to grow or was forced to operate secretly.
The 120 martyrs in this group died between 1648 and 1930. Eighty-seven of them were born in China, and were children, parents, catechists, or laborers, ranging in age from nine years to 72. This group includes four Chinese diocesan priests. The 33 foreign-born martyrs were mostly priests or women religious, especially from the Order of Preachers, the Paris Foreign Mission Society, the Friars Minor, Society of Jesus, Society of St. Francis de Sales (Salesians), and Franciscan Missionaries of Mary.
Augustine Zhao Rong was a Chinese soldier who accompanied Bishop John Gabriel Taurin Dufresse of the Paris Foreign Mission Society to his martyrdom in Beijing. Not long after his baptism, Augustine was ordained as a diocesan priest. He was martyred in 1815.
Beatified in groups at various times, these 120 martyrs were canonized together in Rome on October 1, 2000.
Reflection
-----------
The People’s Republic of China and the Roman Catholic Church each have well over a billion members, but there are only about 12 million Catholics in China. The reasons for that are better explained by historical conflicts than by a wholesale rejection of the Good News of Jesus Christ. The Chinese-born martyrs honored by today’s feast were regarded by their persecutors as dangerous because they were considered allies of enemy, Catholic countries. The martyrs born outside China often tried to distance themselves from European political struggles relating to China, but their persecutors saw them as Westerners and therefore, by definition, anti-Chinese.
The Good News of Jesus Christ is intended to benefit all peoples; today’s martyrs knew that. May 21st-century Christians live in such a way that Chinese women and men will be attracted to hear that Good News and embrace it.

Dauer(nd)Regen

Description: As a 26-year old Marine radar intercept officer (RIO), Fleet Lentz flew 131 combat missions in the back seat of the supersonic F-4 B Phantom II during the wind-down of the Vietnam War. Overcoming military regulations, he and his fellow Marines at The Rose Garden (Royal Thai Air Base Nam Phong) kept sorely needed supplies moving in while moving combat troops out of Southeast Asia. His personal and accessible memoir describes how pilots and RIOs executed dangerous air-to-ground bombing missions in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos—quite different from the air-to-air warfare for which they had trained—and kept themselves mission-capable (and human) while surviving harsh circumstances.
Review: This book should actually have been called A Frontseat View of Nam Phong. The amount he wrote on flying and being in the air and in combat is miniscule - barely a footnote - when compared to his detailed rememberances of people, what they did at the bar, what he did as a building inspector on base, and details on scrounging for stuff at Cubi Point and elsewhere. But to really get a feel of what it was like to fly combat in Laos and Cambodia and both South and North Vietnam, you'd better get a different book because this one barely mentions any of that. Definitely a 2 star book simply because of the misleading title and description. If this was supposed to be a book about life at an Air Base, it'd be a 3 at least, but NOPE.

The Notebook
2. Nếu bị từ chối, đừng bỏ cuộc. Bất kỳ việc gì cũng cần phải kiên trì mới thành công.
So it’s not gonna be easy. It’s going to be really hard; we’re gonna have to work at this everyday, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, forever, everyday. You and me… everyday.
3. “Life starts at the end of your comfort zone” (Cuộc sống chỉ thực sự bắt đầu khi bạn vượt qua nỗi sợ hãi của mình).
4. Đừng giam mình trong ngục tù mang tên Quá Khứ & Tương Lai. Hãy tận hưởng mọi khoảnh khắc tươi đẹp nhất của cuộc sống ngay bây giờ.
Summer romances begin for all kinds of reasons, but when all is said and done, they have one thing in common. They’re shooting stars, a spectacular moment of light in the heavens, fleeting glimpse of eternity, and in a flash they’re gone.
Allie: Do you think our love, can take us away together?
Duke: I think our love can do anything we want it to.
Duke: I love you.
It’s not about keeping your promises, and it’s not about following your heart. It’s about security.
That’s my sweetheart in there. Wherever she is, that’s where my home is.
Cô ấy là trái tim bé bỏng của tôi. Dù cô ấy có đang ở bất cứ nơi đâu thì đó sẽ luôn là nhà của tôi.
I am nothing special; just a common man with common thoughts, and I’ve led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me and my name will soon be forgotten. But in one aspect I have succeeded as gloriously as anyone who’s ever lived: I’ve loved another with all my heart and soul; and to me, this has always been enough.
