Trichocereus atacamensis (Leucostele atacamensis)

Though long known as Trichocereus atacamensis (or Echinopsis atacamensis when it was proposed that all the Trichocereus species should be merged into Echinopsis), this cactus has recently been moved into the genus Leucostele, along with its closest relatives. By any name, it is an impressive cactus, growing to as much as 33 feet tall (10 m) over the course of its very long life span. It comes from the Andes mountain range in northern Chile, northwestern Argentina, and southwestern Bolivia. This is its first flowering here at the Ruth Bancroft Garden, and we are surprised to see it blooming so late in the year.
