Robot Wars - Now Closed
Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. Introducing Star Iliad!
We’re happy to announce our next game, “Star Iliad”! Now in development.
Star Iliad is a retro-futuristically themed Metroidvania that takes place inside a giant star whale.
See the teaser trailer!
youtube
In the game, you’ll play as Blythe Braves, a Star Ranger who patrols a remote region of the interstellar frontier. Heeding a distress signal, she investigates to find a curious large rock formation in the shape of a whale. Shortly after landing and locating a couple of castaways, her ship is destroyed by unknown alien creatures. Stranded and surrounded, but not outgunned, she joins forces with other castaways in a bid to escape. A big adventure ensues!
Where Phoenotopia had more Zelda-style leanings, Star Iliad dives deeper into Metroid territory with a larger, interconnected map and a stronger focus on gun combat. We’ve learned the correct lessons from Phoenotopia— which is… Guns are Good 👍 Bats are Bad 👎 (joking!)
The story won’t be taking a backseat. While Phoenotopia featured a large ensemble cast, Star Iliad narrows its focus to a smaller group of more thoroughly explored characters.
(Characters can leverage expressive portraits to drive emotionally charged scenes)
Some additional in-development pics. We have both very finished & very unfinished looking areas.
Legacy of Phoenotopia
Since Phoenotopia’s development concluded, we’ve received some really encouraging emails from fans expressing how much they enjoyed it and even sharing their concern about whether we were doing alright. This meant a lot, especially considering Phoenotopia was not a strong seller.
For a while now, I’ve felt the need to allay those fears and let everyone know that we’re alive and hard at work on something new. With Steam’s fourth anniversary for Phoenotopia approaching, it felt like the right moment to finally share an update.
True, Phoenotopia was not a strong seller, but it would not turn out to be as bleak as I previously believed. Long after sales should have dwindled to zero, the game found a small, but steady threshold—a lifeline that has kept us funded. We’ve also been able to rely on family (and the occasional side job or two) to stay afloat.
Lastly, I think the game got some organic word of mouth, so there would be random times here and there where a youtuber or renowned streamer covered Phoenotopia and we’d get an unusual sales spike out of nowhere.
So, to all the fans who supported us, whether by buying the game, spreading the word, or just sending us kind messages—thank you! You’ve sustained us in ways you may not even realize, and we’re incredibly grateful 🙇
Chronicling Star Iliad’s development with a new Dev Log! (on wordpress)
After Phoenotopia, there was a bit of wandering around and thinking about what was next.
I wanted to settle into a quieter pace of development for a while. With Phoenotopia, I had been doing long form dev log updates. I wanted to try something different – a smaller, but more frequent form of dev logging. And it appeared that the new dev blogging meta was social media like Twitter & Instagram.
But there was no point in starting right away. Because 4 years back, we didn’t know what we were working on. It would take about a year of exploring & feeling around before “Star Iliad” developed enough shape and form that it could be talked about. Then we started twitter (@StarIliad) and instagram (@StarIliad), and started posting. Not as regular as I thought I would it turns out – short form updates have their own unique challenges and dev logging is always easy to neglect.
Still, if you’re curious, you can look at the StarIliad twitter account and enjoy the past 3 years of short form dev log posts (it may keep you entertained for all of 10 minutes).
As for the instagram account, it never quite took off, basically dying right out the gate >_>
In any case, we’re in the midst of development. It’s difficult to see the finish line from here, so I can’t announce a release date. What I can announce is the return of the dev log, where like times of yore, I will be chronicling our thoughts and tribulations until we reach the finish line. I invite you to join us by subscribing to the new dev log on wordpress.
(Also, please wishlist on Steam! It helps with the algorithm)

Shopify has a blog problem, this creates a really simple and straightforward opportunity for freelance designers/programmers

Earlier this year I settled the editorial decisions I needed for a lot of blogging going forward, and recently I've experimented (repeatedly) with the idea of having a blog on a separate platform, or using Shopify's system.
Having two sites would allow me to blog on a WordPress site, but creates... two sites, therefore complicates everything more. More maintenance, design, etc. etc.
I am actively seeking to make my life easier so I am foregoing two sites and learning to live with the limitations.
A personal struggle to the surprise of no one.
You can use WordPress and thread Shopify through it via the "buy" button, which is a shortcut for small stores and/or larger stores where you are very comfortable in WordPress.
You cannot use Shopify and thread WordPress through it.
Which is a shame.
Because Shopify's native blog platform is fucking horrible.
An independent graphic designer who can program, or a programmer who can design, cannot solve Shopify's problems.
They are inherent to the system and likely built on legacy code Shopify doesn't want to update because it'll cost a fortune.
I'll just be mad about this until the market forces them to address this opportunity and they revamp their blogging platform. That's fine.
Or maybe decades will pass and they won't. That's... fine too. I guess.
I am rambling this out because if I were in the business of freelance graphic design and/or programming I would jump on this immediately. I used to be and always shared opportunities with friends and it was fun and I kinda miss that aspect of the life.
I'm not in that business, and I have in-house programming, please don't pitch me, but do consider pitching... pretty much everyone with a Shopify site and a blog as Phase 01 of your plan, and everyone who has a Shopify site and does not have a blog as Phase 02 of your plan.
Here is what I would tackle:
Shopify blogs have two structures: "blog" and "blog post".
A blog in Shopify is essentially a category in WordPress, with more limitations, such as, a blog post can only be in a single "blog". That sucks but it means your life as a designer/developer gets more interesting.
Most Shopify themes come out of the box with 1 "blog" and 1 "blog post" template. They are exceptionally simple, usually. I would build a few test templates and offer them to clients "these will be modified to fit your direct style."
For some reason -- I'm guessing focus -- most blogs in Shopify have the image on top. If you structure "image on the left, image on the right" as options you can offer clients, you've just tripled their layout capabilities.
For another reason, I don't know why, but almost all shopify blog post templates I've seen do not have sidebars. Which is insane?! You can control that from the fucking "blog post" template so it would be an easy win.
You could work around the "a post can only be in one blog on Shopify" issue by having a sidebar that pulls the latest 3 (or 5 or whatever) posts as links for other blogs on the site: TEST SITE has 3 blogs. When you're looking at a post on BLOG 01, in the sidebar, you see a link to the latest post on BLOG 02 and BLOG 03. Similarly, when you're looking at a post on BLOG 02, the sidebar has the latest post from BLOG 01 and BLOG 03 (and so on)
The template I use, off the shelf, uses the Shopify's user name and details for the author of the blog. Once a blog post is created, in Shopify, you cannot alter the author. This is dumb as fucking rock salt on slug popcorn. But, again, systematic, I'm pitching ideas on ways around it -- exclude this and just use a CUSTOM DATA field to allow the Shopify owner to pick the relevant author. This cuts down on the need for extra Shopify users, tremendously, and builds in the opportunity for WordPress-style author footers on blog posts.
Emulate the very common filtering on products -- dropdowns, sorting mechanisms -- with tags on a sidebar on BLOG templates. This will be tricky because you cannot hook into the Search & Discovery function, but it's absolutely no where near impossible. And would be amazingly useful.
Overall Shopify is a decent platform with significant advantages.
There blogger apps but holy shit that is so unnecessary. If they were a one-time-fee, it would be fine, but they aren't, they're generally $20+/month.
I'm not interested in paying for a service that ties me into another tech system that I am fucked if they go out of business, jack up their prices, introduce a feature I don't like, or remove a feature I do like.
For something like a blog system.
Which relies HEAVILY on very structured, single-built, near-infinitely-reused templates.
A low effort, high yield opportunity exists for independent designer/programmers to come up with a suite of designs and say "hey with some very simple modifications, we can take 1 of the following, apply it to your store, and dramatically increase your in-site blogging opportunities."
You start with a base "blog post" template and a base "blog" template and then every time someone hires you to add a feature to theirs, using Shopify's core tech -- you're just applying paint -- you now have a second set of templates.
Recycle forward.
One time fee per client -- likely low, but again effort is low since 90% of the code is re-used -- and each time you secure a client, you have opened a networking door.
Just make sure you include instructions and/or a premium service for when the customer upgrades their theme version -- "occasionally your theme author will upgrade, and this may get lost... so do the following to bring it back and/or we'll handle it for you for $X and Y-days notice."
Business opportunities are everywhere.
Good luck!
I repeat don't add me to your pitch list, I have a programmer in-house, but use this idea to make a business or extend yours!
This isn't financial advice, it is annoyed rambling!

Hi I also do not have time for web dev* but since reading your post about Patreon-Memberful being terrible and Ghost looking appealing I can't stop thinking about the migration sounding kind of fun. What's your current hosting situation and if you went to ghost would you keep it or switch to their managed hosting Ghost Pro offering or is that all as yet undecided?
*My job is web dev and this ask is at least 90% procrastinating at Job web dev with Daydream web dev, but since it's sticking I figured I might as well try to make the daydream web dev mildly useful
i'd love to do ghost's managed hosting BUT i need custom themes since none of the defaults are geared toward multi serials. and i don't trust them to be cool about smut long-term.
my current cheapo shared hosting for wordpress can't handle ghost so i'd probably do a digitalocean droplet since. that seems like something i can manage lmao. my original plan was to Make A Theme but it turns out i don't want to. so instead i'll probably buy a docs theme (i like the table of contents functionality) and hope for the best.
#original#not that i won't theoretically eventually make a theme for real#but right now it's just a roadblock keeping me trapped in memberful hell#i'd loooove to be able to make a theme that like. friends could use.#i know i'm not the only bitch out here writing multiple serials that could benefit#hell it would even make sense for podcast creators with multiple shows#AND YET NO ONE MAKES A THEME FOR THAT

Hey sweet girl! I just wanted to say at the top that I LOVE your blog! It's so helpful and inspiring 💞
I was just wondering if you had any tips on how to start a blog? I'd love to try but have no idea where to begin or what to do and would greatly appreciate any help from you. ILYSM 🎀
Hey lovely!
Thank you SO much for the sweet words, I’m excited for you to start your blog!
Starting a blog can feel like a lot, but what makes a blog successful is actually staying true to your words. People can tell when you FEEL what you are saying.
Pick a niche you love & can talk about for days. Within that niche, talk about things you wanted to learn/ needed to hear, because other people might be looking for the same thing. Without a niche, it's very hard to attract the right audience because people wont feel like they can connect.
When I started this blog, It was when I had started a business and I wanted to document my journey and feelings. I am actually insanely vulnerable here with you guys than I am with most my friends IRL hahahha But I am so grateful for putting myself out there because I thinks thats what really helped me connect and find people who "get me" on this platform.
As your blog grows and people interact, you will see what subjects they are most interested in and can format your contact towards that. But most important is to first put A LOT of content out there. Even now, I post 5-10 times a day even though my blog has grown so much by the grace of God.
Pick a blog name thats cohesive with your niche and catchy.
Pick a platform you want to use to post in... Substack, Blogger, Wordpress, Blogspot, tumblr
Pick a theme you like that feels cohesive.
If you aren't using tumblr, you will need to buy a DOMAIN name and a HOSTING plan. I use Godaddy for everything.
You will also need to create key pages: About page, Contact page, Blog page, Privacy Policy
Then once everything is set up, you can start writing :)
If you need writing ideas, search for posts on instagram, x, tiktok, answer the public etc in the niche you are interested in, see whats popular and then write your own thoughts and opinions since you know its a popular subject.
SEO helps people find your blog through Google. To optimize your content, make sure your posts include relevant keywords, meta descriptions and other SEO basics. When you are writing quality content, the SEO will naturally follow tbh.
You can promote your blog on social media platforms, I don't do this.. but it definitely helps drive traffic!
Stay consistent with your posts. Don't put a lot of pressure on yourself, maybe bulk create and schedule them... but being consistent is very important.
In Short.. pick a name for your blog and start writing. If you don't start, you won't know how to optimize & make it better.
You’ve got everything it takes to make your blog a beautiful space for inspiration and connection. Don't overthink it. Take it one step at a time and enjoy the creative process.
I am so excited for you! 💞

John Green's Thoughts on Adulthood: A Post-Mortem Analysis
So I was thinking about the time years and years ago, back when writer John Green was more active on Tumblr. Someone asked if he would ever write a book about adults, and his perspective were that adults were boring.
There's mixed physical evidence online. I remember seeing it, the first line of the ask was captured on a Buzzfeed article from 2013. I couldn't find the actual ask, because from what I've heard at some point John Green was torn apart with such intensity that he is now just a collection of atoms. And I don't hate John Green. I liked his books when I was also young. I watched the VlogBrothers. If I met him in an author space I would thank him for introducing me to NaNoWriMo when I was in middle school.
And then I would ask if he was doing okay. Like - emotionally? Because the shit she said in that ask is some of the saddest I have ever heard in my life. I'm using this Wordpress post as a reference of the rest of what he said and I just want to go through why it's just such a fucked and dangerous thing to say as an author who advocates for young people.
Follow me!
“Would you ever write a YA novel where an adult plays a key role? I know you like to leave the focus around the teenagers and their “peer relationships… but I was just wondering if it had ever crossed your mind.”
That was the ask. Fairly reasonable! And John Green responded immediately with the following:
I mean, to be totally honest with you, I don’t really give a shit about adults.
This on its own is a massive self-report. Not to any sort of crime or character flaw. In my mind, it's part of the reason why I feel like a point where big enough online figures, writers included, either need a PR team or a LOT of therapy. But he continues.
Like, all of my friends are adults. My spouse is an adult. My parents and brother are adults. I know and like many adults. But I don’t want to write for them. Or God forbid about them. They’re just so…boring. It’s like, “Oh I have a mortgage. I buy six pairs of identical khaki pants at a time. I take care of children and watch the television program CSI.” I admire people who can make that crap into the stuff of interesting fiction, but…yeah. No.”
I am angry. I am very angry. If someone said this shit to me in person I would make a face. If we were sharing a space with anyone under the age of 21 I would immediately say "you need to shut the fuck up right now jesus christ".
The thought of a writer who really made his whole brand caring for youth telling them that their future is inevitably dull and unremarkable, especially when you deal with themes of suicide and mental illness, is actually one of the most artistically unethical things I can think of at the moment. I understand that John Green struggled with untreated OCD for very long time, so there's a chance this could actually just be him voicing an intrusive thought that honestly terrifies him.
But he's wrong. We know this, right? Including the adults on here who complain about the tedious aspects of adult life? We know that in a majority of cases it is generally better to be a legal adult than a minor? If you are someone who would go back to being in high school because you maybe had less responsibilities, are you really prepared to lose bodily/legal/societal autonomy?
Like I struggle in life. Sometimes I've struggled a lot. But at my worst, when I was unemployed and flat broke and I couldn't even sell my blood because I took Lithium, if someone told them they could magic me back to being 16 years old again I would scream in their face until they left.
Also, I have a mortgage. It's not boring. Mortgage and insurances are, in fact, pretty confusing and something you have to learn and research. The most boring part about my mortgage was the thirty minute meeting I spent signing paperwork, and once I did that I owned a house with my wife.
Young people who see this - there are going to be boring parts of your life. That's a thing that happens, and sometimes you'll actually be grateful for it. You aren't boring for being thrilled that there's a sale on khakis if you're buying them for a theatrical production, or donating them to a war relief effort, or you're using the fabric, or if it allows you to save money and time in a way that means you get to have a smoothie or something later.
I cannot speak for the experiences of people with higher support needs than I have. But I did talk about this to a friend with higher support needs, and they agreed that being an adult rules. There is a point in which you are no longer an extension of your family or upbringing and it is your life.
It's not always fun. It's scary and confusing and lonely. I had to learn a lot of what my parents never taught me. Adults are always learning things. But since I graduated high school, the only boring period of my life has been the times where I overworked myself into a breakdown and was forced to recover.
And, considering where John Green is now, that kind of explains his perspective a lot.
I hope he figures stuff out. There's no age limit to having to figure stuff out. We're all going to have to do it a lot in our lives.

Sul Sul!
| hi my loves,
i’m elinora, or el. i’ve been playing the sims for 25 years (what), and this is the first time I’ve ever joined the online community. *deep breath* HI!
the sims is a passion, as we all know, and it can be a labour of love (and hate lol). i’m an audhder, and although the sims has been a special interest since i was around 6 years old (yikes), the dopamine hit sure runs dry sometimes! i recently took a year off playing with some yucky burnout - joining tumblr is a big part of renewing my love for ts4.
this simblr is for sharing the journey of my ultimate passion project: creating a custom save from a fully empty world.
the plan is to kinda post the journey as it unfolds and hopefully end up with a fully populated custom save file (featuring my own creations, alongside builds from my favourite creators) that you can download if you like when i've completed it! Warming: this might take actual years lol.
i am sUper excited to share my progress with you guys! i’ve never shared any of my Sims life publicly before but i’ve seen so much love and connection in this awesome community - i honestly can’t wait to get to know you all more here on tumblr.
feel free to check out my pinterest board for this project, too! you can also find me on the gallery @eliwils. i also run a wordpress blog for my non-sims art and poetry.. if you’re into that kinda thing check it out here :3 it's.. sporadic at best rn lol.
| dag dag fn. <3
WCIFT?
You’ll find pages for my resources (mods, defaults, etc.) and downloadable tray files for all my personal builds and households here.
My builds (and lots by other Simmers on the gallery) will not contain CC. Despite my experience, I am still learning to build more creatively. I’ll be using real world architecture as inspo and IRL floorplans as a guide to give a sense of realism and 'liveability' aha. Hopefully during the course of this project my build quality and aesthetic will continue to improve!
My Sims, however, will showcase my favourite CC and the creators I adore. I aim to include lookbooks for each Sim in a household and links to download individual CC items as well as feature my favourite/most used creators.
If you see something you love and I haven't mentioned it - please shoot me a message!
ETC..
I try to create Sims with varied personalities, styles, and individual stories relevant to their home world/neighbourhood! Hopefully this means the population will be vibrant and diverse, with a little whimsy and excitement thrown in for gameplay fun.
I mostly use maxis match CC, but there are some alpha textures in my game too, particularly for hair. I try to keep styles fairly consistent so the blend of MM and alpha isn’t jarring - but I am trying to transition more towards MM only CC.
I’m aiming to keep to the 'original’ intended themes for each world as much as possible, but making them more stylised, detailed, and interesting, with some cross-pack elements included to update the worlds slightly and create a more cohesive overall .. universe?
There will probably be quite a long list of CC required for the households in this save once it’s complete. I get that it might be a bit of a pain to get everything I've recommended.. but this is a save I actually intend to play with, and it’s my personal love letter to the game I grew up with.
I’ve always been a huge fan of the creator community. They are incredible, generous and talented humans, and I’ve been an avid CC shopper since The Sims 2. I’d like to show my support for creators I adore in a CC Finds tag. I’ll also post about build/buy items there from time to time even though I'm not using them in this save specifically.
