Tips and tricks for travelling in Africa. Ultimate guide
written by Makaojr
April 14, 2019
You’ve finally taken the plunge and booked that ticket for an epic African adventure, you’ve planned a rough itinerary, picked your safari, and soon you’ll be on your way – hooray!
From the incredible natural environment to the rich cultural history, the friendly locals to the vibrant markets, Africa has everything, sometimes all at once. There’s just something about this fascinating continent that pulls you in and keeps you wanting to return over and over again. But there’s no denying that it can also be a daunting place to travel for even the hardiest of explorers!
We recently spent 4 months travelling through southern and central Africa, and we compiled all the things we either learnt along the way (through misfortune or trial and error!), or wish we’d known before we left for you, so you can focus on having the stress-free African adventure of your dreams!
Tumblr media
How to speak the language
If you’re worried you’re going to get stuck at the airport in Tanzania forever because you can’t direct your taxi driver in fluent swahili, stay calm.
You’ll be mighty relieved to discover that despite the 1,500-2,000 local languages spoken in Africa, English is actually an official language in many countries (along with German or French in a few countries!).
Don’t miss out by being lazy and relying solely on English though; learn some key phrases. The locals will appreciate it and you’ll have a much richer experience for it – like the time a friendly Malawian fruit stall owner threw in a few extra pieces because we attempted our best Chichewa with him!
What the locals are like
Tumblr media
Forget what you’ve seen in the movies; collectively, Africans are some of the friendliest people on the planet. It’s common to be greeted with a huge smile and hello, and most are keen to learn your name, where you’re from and why you’re visiting.
You’ll probably encounter the phrase ‘Mzungu’ being thrown your way – often by locals smiling as they wave out of car windows or pass you on the street. The literal translation from Swahili is ‘person who wanders without purpose’, though these days it’s used to describe any white foreigner. It’s mostly said in a friendly, joking way – so try not to take offence.
It’s also important to remember that Africa as a whole is very religious (Christianity and Islam are widely practiced) and quite conservative so be respectful of this in your speech and dress.
How to avoid border hassles
Unfortunately corrupt border processes are one aspect of African travel that can be seriously frustrating for travellers.
Most of the time you’ll pass with no issue, other times you may have to wait hours for your passport to be processed without explanation, or be asked to pay a corrupt official a bribe. Then there are the touts offering to exchange your money at rates that are totally ridiculous, or trying to sell you anything from bangles to samosas (side note: always buy the samosas, guys).
Thankfully, we managed to make it through eight different border controls with minimal hassle, and you can too, by following these tips:
Be informed: Know your visa requirements before visiting any country in Africa. Get in touch with your local embassy before travelling, or pay a visit to Project Visa for answers to all your visa-related questions.
Be organised: While you can get most visas at the individual points of entry, arranging them ahead of time saves a tonne of hassle (and sometimes, money!) later.
Be money smart: Always carry spare US dollars just in case. If you need to change money on the border, always know the exchange rate before you get there and bargain hard.
Be stubborn – if someone looks like they’re deliberately holding things up to make you pay to “rush it through” firmly (and politely!) ask to have your passport back. If you’re certain that your visa meets all the requirements but you’re being asked to pay more to get it approved, decline and ask to speak to another official.
Above all else: approach the process with a smile and have a laugh. It’s easier that way!
How to travel around
One of the best things about travelling in Africa is no matter where you are or where you want to go, getting from A-to-B is always possible. How you get from A-B however, is another story altogether.
Taxis, tuk tuks, mopeds, rickshaws, you name it… If it has wheels and appears capable of travelling some distance, you can probably travel on it. You might find yourself sitting on a flight or bus, crammed into a local mini bus with 25 other people (and the odd goat or chicken!), or hitching a ride in the back of a pick-up with half a village heading home from the markets.
For the record: travelling by mini-bus is an African rite of passage and we totally recommend embracing the uncomfortable seat and cramped conditions for this insight to how the locals live!
For a journey you can relax into, our tips are:
Always travel by day. Always.
Always wear your seatbelt
Don’t expect to leave or arrive on time – things run on Africa time here!
You may, or may not, get a seat. You may sit in the aisle of the bus for 5 hours with a chicken pecking at your head. Roll with it – it’s all part of the adventure!
For most mini bus journeys, you can negotiate your fare
Never pay a “bag storage fee” on large buses. It’s a scam – your ticket price includes your baggage.
Accommodation
From tailor-made luxury safari tents where you can live like Prince Harry, through to your standard backpacker dorms where snore-proof earplugs are a must – the options of where to lay your head in Africa are many and varied.
Many travellers actually choose to camp their way through Africa (we often did!), because the camping facilities are accessible, safe, full of good amenities, and super cheap. Plus, what better way to make new friends than by sitting round the campfire swapping stories about your day?!
Larger cities have all the usual accommodation options, the further into the countryside you venture, the less options are available. Don’t fear though, you’ll ALWAYS find somewhere to rest up after a hard day’s adventuring!
Things to consider:
Always book accommodation well in advance during peak season (May – October). Places like Namibia are extremely popular, with very limited accommodation in desert areas.
Use guide books, online reviews or local recommendations. Does it get good reviews?!
Does your accommodation have a safe, lockers or locks?
Is there a night watchman/security to make sure you and your belongings are safe overnight?
How to stay healthy
Medication & health: Check with your GP about what vaccinations and medication you’ll need before you depart.
Hot tip: Most countries require Yellow Fever vaccination proof just to enter the country.
We also packed the following to keep us fighting adventure-fit on the road:
Anti malarial medication
Antibiotics
Painkillers
Antihistamine
Iodine tablets
Hydrocortisone cream
Insect repellent: DEET is your new best friend!
* Sadly, though the lakes in Africa look inviting, many are home to a horrible parasite called Bilharzia. We’re not in the business of horror stories, so we’ll leave you to investigate the delights of that one yourself – but you DO NOT want to get it. Always check with locals before taking the plunge.
Water: There’s a pretty common misconception that there’s no clean drinking water in Africa, but we’re here to tell you it is possible to drink water straight from the tap in South Africa, Namibia, and parts of Zambia and Botswana. Head north and you’ll need to be cautious, but carry iodine tablets and you’ll be fine!
Food: All you really need to know is that food in Africa is delicious. It’s also mostly high quality – though perhaps avoid meat in remote areas due to a lack of proper refrigeration.
How to stay safe
We actually felt more safe in African countries than we did in other regions of the world we’ve visited. However, as always it pays to do your research before you go.
Keep the following in mind and you’ll have a stress-free trip!
Leave the flashy jewelry and designer labels at home – they’re not practical, and make you a target instantly.
Wear a money belt OR only take a day’s worth of cash out with you.
When taking money out at an ATM, be aware of your surroundings. If something seems suspicious, move along quickly.
We’re photographers, which means we always travel with big cameras and even bigger lenses. But you’d never know, because they’re safely locked away in our bags till needed. Don’t make yourself a target by waving yours around!
Don’t walk the streets at night by yourself, especially in larger cities or towns. If you’re out late, take a taxi or Uber, every time.
Pickpockets exist here as they do everywhere, so if you’re visiting markets, bazaars, train or bus stations be extra careful.
Going it alone
Africa is a wonderful place to travel solo. If you’re open, you can have wonderfully rich experiences while meeting incredible people. You’ll also find that it’s pretty safe – any dangers that exist for both males and females are pretty the same as anywhere else you’d travel to.
Where possible, follow these tips and you should have no issues:
Be cautious when travelling to remote regions
Don’t travel alone at night
Register your travel plans with your government
Keep in regular contact with members at home
Money matters
Africa isn’t a cheap holiday by any stretch – generally the daily costs for a traveller are much higher than in Asia or even South America.
Budget around $100USD per day per person for transport, accommodation and food. Safaris and adventure activities bump up the cost substantially, so you’ll need to allocate more for those.
There are 54 currencies in Africa, so things can get tricky if you’re travelling to multiple countries. Here are a few tips to handle it all:
Most southern African countries have ATM’s or credit card facilities. If not, it’s best to find a local bank and stock up on currency.
If you have a large amount of currency left over when leaving a country, exchange it at the border with a reputable source. Only in extreme circumstances should you use street vendors
Always hide at least $200 USD somewhere safe in case of emergencies
Credit card fraud is big time in Southern Africa, so be wary. We had our cards skimmed in South Africa and temporarily lost AUD$1500!
Tipping is generally expected, though it varies region to region
Staying scam-free
Our general rule of thumb is “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is”; live by this in Africa and you should be okay.
Here’s what to avoid:
People offering a good or service (e.g. tour) for free, including tours, only to charge exorbitantly at the conclusion of the service
Fake products or tickets being sold at inflated prices
Payment for stored baggage on bus rides
Insisting on carrying baggage at airports or bus depots, then demanding a large ‘tip’
Over inflated taxi or bus rides – always agree on a price first!
People posing as refugees, students or orphans begging
Other ‘payments’ at border crossings, including health assessments or for bogus documents
Be mindful of resources
Electricity, or lack of it, is big issue in Africa. Many areas have it, yet over 600 million people still go without. As technology develops so does access, however if you are travelling, please take this into consideration. Switch those lights off and unplug your chargers!
We recommend carrying a worldwide travel adaptor and a solar charging device (not all rest camps will have consistent access to power!).
Same goes for water – Africa is a dry continent, and has long-suffered droughts. Short showers = benefit for all.

The Use Of Malachite In Jewelry
Malachite is a semi-precious stone that is primarily sourced from copper ore deposits. Though softer than most gemstones, it is often set in jewelry due to its attractive green hue and striking vein patterns. Malachite was first used by the ancient Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks to adorn the body. It was believed to protect wearers from the dangers of the evil eye. Evidence exists of its usage as far back as 4000 BC.
Malachite has become quite rare, with new stocks not entering the market so often. The primary deposits were believed to be in the Ural Mountains in Russia, but these have now been seriously depleted. The most famous specimens are perhaps those found in the Winter Palace of the old Russian Tzars. This magnificent building features a room which has been entirely decorated with malachite, including columns, vases, trimming, and pilasters.
Today, most malachite is sourced from Australia, Chile, and Zaire, with smaller deposits found in Zambia, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Israel, France, the US, and the UK. As with all gemstones, quality does vary, those specimens with the most color variations usually command the highest price. When buying malachite, or jewelry that features this stone, it is important to be aware of current market rates. The country of origin does impact on price.
The most beautiful and expensive examples of this mineral are typically those that feature combinations with other gemstones. For example, there are deposits of malachite that are embedded with azurite, chrysocolla, and cuprite. The finishing is also a factor which impacts on the beauty and price, as does size and shape.
Due to its softness, malachite is more fragile than other gemstones. When buying pendants and necklaces that feature this stone, it is important to protect from sharp blows and scratches. A resin can be applied to minimize the risk of damage. To preserve the stone's luster, large temperature ranges should be avoided. What's more, chemical based cleaners should be avoided. When setting or repairing malachite jewelry, be wary of using excessive heat as this can also result in damage.
If planning to purchase wholesale jewelry that features malachite, it is important to know that the stones are authentic. Fortunately, it is relatively easy to identify the real stones from cheap imitations. Malachite remains popular today with people from all walks of life. It's relatively low price and innate beauty make it one of the most interesting gemstones that is used in jewelry.

Google Fi
Travelers. Adventurers. Expats. Wanderers. Digital nomads.
As much as we’d like to think that we are a form of the new evolved mankind, refusing to be boxed in by any government, border, or the antiquated notion that one and only one place on earth is where we belong, we are still not free.
That’s because, for the vast majority of people who undertake a trip abroad that constitutes more than one or two weeks of vacation, we’re still anchored by one inconvenient necessity: we need to work.
Unless you’re independently wealthy, that’s the harsh reality, as you need to somehow eke out an existence by the fruits of your labor even while you travel or live abroad.
Sure, you can just relax and enjoy it for a while, but that gets old very quickly (trust me – I didn’t earn income my whole first two years living in Costa Rica and Nicaragua while I was writing my first two books) and the savings account dwindles even faster.
The good news is that over the last few years, virtual work has been on the rise, gaining widespread popularity and acceptance as people can work online for a whole host of different jobs and tasks. However, whether you have a cushy corporate job that allows you to work from home – or the beach in a foreign country, you’re an entrepreneur not tied to a retail location, or you work in the digital trades like design, content creation, virtual admin, affiliate marketing, or drop shipping, etc., you still need one thing above all else: access to the internet.
Without it, you’ll lose your source of income, your clients, and probably your sanity pretty quickly.
For me, I’m still shackled to the internet even though I live abroad in the Philippines and Southeast Asia. That may seem enviable, but I often find myself living in cities and restricting my sojourns to more built up places where I think I can get internet.
I always want to visit the more remote islands, beaches, and countryside destinations here in the Philippines, but I’m seriously restricted by internet access. Even super popular places like Boracay island (voted the top island in the world) have wifi. However, the signal can be so weak, it’s effectively unusable.
I remember when I lived there in 2013-14, I would literally run from coffee shop to coffee shop and restaurant to bar all day in search of a wi-fi signal that was good enough to get my work done. Of course, they would tell me that they had wi-fi so I’d order a coffee or something and sit down, only to find that the signal did connect but was so weak it was worthless. And it wasn’t like video conferencing or something that required a high-level signal, just social media posting and posting blogs. Well, almost five years later and it hasn’t really improved there. I’d visit amazing places like Leyte, Siargao, Batanes, Batanes far more often – and stay longer – if I could get an internet signal.

The map of Google Fi coverage – 170 countries and counting!
A post shared by AllWorld.com (@allworldonline) on Jan 10, 2019 at 10:01am PST
In my utopian scenario, I dream of the far off places I’d go in the four corners of the globe if there was just one universal internet that could be accessed from anywhere, without depending on local infrastructure, towers, and providers – like a satellite internet whose signal would be just as strong in Timbuktu as it would be in New York City.
While there has been talk of such a service (come one, Elon Musk!), we’re not there yet.
But the next best thing may be Google Fi.
Google has doubled down on Google Fi, there long established but somewhat forgotten world (or almost) internet and calling plan.
To be clear, you still will be dependent on accessing internet signal no matter where you go, but there are some huge advantages to Google Fi for travelers and those who want to live or explore abroad.
For instance, you can connect to one of three mobile 4G LTE networks around the world, and automatically connect to over 2 million secure wi-fi hotspots globally. That happens seamlessly when you are using Google Fi, so you don’t need to start monkeying with your settings or try to log in to something that works with passwords. You also don’t need to worry about buying local SIM cards and paying for international plans anymore – which is a huge plus for travelers who country hop.
Here are the other highlights, according to Google:
Google Fi covers 170 countries around the world. Considering that there are approximately 196 countries officially (rogue nations/disputed states etc. make up about 10 more), that’s pretty much the whole globe.
Those nations span from Afghanistan to Zambia and a whole lot in between, including when I checked for the countries I’ve lived in over the last seven years: Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and the Philippines.
However, I saw that they exclude the nations of Syria, Iran, and North Korea, etc.
How much does it cost?
For $20 per month you can access unlimited calls and texts.
For $19 per month you get 1.9 GB of data to surf and use the internet. That can easily be expanded at a rate of $10 per 1 GB.
Their most popular and flexible plan is only $20 per month plus taxes and fees, with free calls and texts, and free (slower) WiFi that’s easy to increase in $10 increments, if I’m reading their website correctly.
Voice calls using Google Fi’s network (not wi-fi) are only 20 cents per minute.
One of the highlights is also that you don’t need to sign a longterm contract – or any contract at all. Instead, you can just pay month to month, and you even get your first month free.
One of the big problems when you travel abroad with your U.S. phone is figuring out the roaming and international charges. Of course, they make those purposely confusing, so you come home from your trip to face an $800 cell phone bill.
For that reason, Google Fi offers their own unique Bill Protection. After 6 BG of data, the internet speed slows down but is free. Google also reports that 99% of their users use less than 15GB of data every month.
Now, here’s the caveat – you need to use either one of Google’s phones or a phone compatible with Google Fi (and the list isn’t expansive).
Here are the phones that will work with Google Fi:
• LG G7 ThinQ • LG V35 ThinQ • Moto X4 (Android One version) • Moto G6 • Nexus 6 • Nexus 5X • Nexus 6P • Pixel and Pixel XL • Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL • Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL • iPhone 5S and later (Beta)
But, if you have one of those phones, you can easily add on the Google Fi service.
I may just have to sign up for Google Fi soon and test it out here in the Philippines. Out of curiosity, I checked through Google Fi’s network finder feature to see if Boracay was included, and was pleased to see it is!
That’s good news – but the proof is actually using it! Stay tuned for that review coming soon!

Give Good, Get Good: Gifts that Give
Gift giving is my love language.
Seriously. I LOVE to find the perfect gift for the people in my life. I love to surprise them and see the look on their face when I get it right.
But there is a little something else I love to do: give back.
I have a fairly robust list of people I gift –  between family, my tribe of friends, colleagues and people I like to surprise spoil. That means I’m constantly on ‘gift alert’…..what would they LOVE? But I also ask myself another question, “Is it possible to spoil the people I adore (or surprise them) AND make the world a little better at the same time.
Why yes, it is.
Because this matters to me, I’ve curated some of my FAVORITE places you can buy for the people you love AND give back at the same time. You’ll find jewelry, t-shirts, accessories and a slew of options your family can commit to – from easing the burden of a family with a sick child, to sponsoring a child in another country to helping to feed little ones right here in the United States to supporting the efforts of a family in a third world country to pull themselves from poverty.
Give Good, Get Good: Gifts that Give
Brave New World Designs– Have I told you that I have brilliant, kind, compassionate friends who are working DAILY for a better world? My friend Christine Koh is one of them. This past year she started Brave New World Designs. I will allow her beautiful words to describe her mission, “Brave New World Designs is on a mission to make the world a little better each day by giving voice to the virtues of creativity, humor, wisdom and love. Our work is part poetry, part adventure, part advocacy and part silly.” I have three of her t-shirt designs in my closet and my small girl has a favorite as well. She wore her ‘Love Fiercely’ shirt to school for picture day and it is PERFECT.
Shop Compliment – I have a personal policy of complimenting ANYONE I find deserving. Have a kind heart, beautiful eyes, lovely manners? I will tell you. My friend Melissa has built a beautiful business with the same mission. She and I actually found each other here online and I’ve been addicted to her heart and commitment to offering education for girls ever since. 5% of each purchase from ShopCompliment goes to a scholarship fund for girls. It is magic. And so are Melissa’s products. She started with jewelry – and each piece comes with a personal ‘compliment’…but she has expanded to inspirational coffee mugs, candles, notebooks and so much more.
Pura Vida – Have a cause that matters to you? I’m fairly confident Pura Vida has you covered in their charity bracelet collection. You can support animal awareness, education, mental health, cancer, diabetes, the military, Parkinson’s disease and SO MUCH MORE. Each and every bracelet is handcrafted by artisans from all over the world. The bracelets are worn by millions of people around the world (I have a few dozen!) and provide full time jobs to more than 150 artisans around the globe. They are partnered with more than 190 charities around the world and have donated more than $1.5 Million dollars. And they have more than just bracelets. They are a go-to for gifts for me. Ohhh – and they have a subscription service!!
Chavez for Charity – I have told you I know extraordinary people, yes? Julie Marie Chavez is a fellow University of San Diego Alumni and someone I knew in my time at the University. She graduated and created the magic that is Chavez for Charity. As with Pura Vida, you can support some of the causes and organizations that mean the world to you. From the Matthew Shepard Foundation to the Malala Fund and Erin Brockovich Foundation (and so many more) – the purchase of each and every bracelet means you are making a difference. And the options are gorgeous. I regularly give them as gifts.
I am Just One. – If you have  ever thought, ‘but I am JUST ONE PERSON…how can I better the world?” – you aren’t alone. I AM JUST ONE is built on the premise that yes, yes! you can make a difference. Just One has the beautiful goals of offering hope, raising awareness and creating advocates. They are offering fair trade jewelry that subscribes to the notion of a ‘hand up’ not a ‘hand out’ so that you know, with each and every gorgeous purchase you are helping to allow a beautifully talented artisan to support themselves and maintain their dignity.
Cause Box –  You know I LOVE subscription boxes. This is one that offers not only a series of gifts for the receiver, but each and every item in the box has a story and makes the world a better place. The boxes are curated for women and each item you receive is either in partnership with CauseBox or comes as a limited edition product from a socially conscious company. Boxes arrive quarterly and subscriptions are about $50/quarter if you pay annually. I LOVE MINE. The products may be jewelry, art work, fashion, apparel, accessories or beauty products. There also have a limited edition box for men for the holidays.
Intangible Giving
The benefit of giving the intangible – you are blessing someone you love (and possibly that ‘person who has everything’) with the gift of having helped someone in need by your gift in their honor.
No Kid Hungry – I have long been committed to ending child hunger. It shouldn’t even be A THING. And yet, it is. ONE in SIX children in the United States don’t get the food they need. That makes learning, living, just being a kid nearly impossible. Share Our Strength is an organization working to make sure all kiddos get the food they need where they live, where they learn and where they play. I’m happy to join friends like Tim McDonald who have been advocates for this cause for years.
Additionally, through its Cooking Matters program, the No Kid Hungry campaign educates and empowers low-income families to stretch their food budgets so their kids get healthy meals at home.
Take a look at their work here.
Unbound – This is a gift you can do as a family – sponsoring a child in need in another country. A portion of Unbound’s mission is to ‘see potential, not poverty’. By sponsoring a child as we have (Karen and Jacqueline both live in Guatemala), my small people are learning not only about another culture as they can communicate with both girls, but also what is means to truly give to someone else.
In order to qualify for sponsorship, Jacqueline and Karen, (like all other children) must be enrolled in school. Dropping out at any time prevents them from being sponsored. Now that my family has committed to both of them, the folks at Unbound sit down with the family and determine how the sponsorship could most benefit them – food, clothing, school supplies and items that can help them break the cycle of poverty – like pigs, chickens, seeds for farming and trees for growing fruit – are all options.
The $60 ($30 each) we spend each month to sponsor these two girls clearly provides much needed financial assistance for their families, but it is equally beneficial for us: My children are seeing good works and love in action, they are learning about another culture, and they have a connection to another child who is opening their eyes to an entirely different way of life.
St. Jude – You are likely not a stranger to St. Jude’s Research Hospital in Memphis. I bet you know it is committed to saving the lives of children living with rare forms of cancer. But did you know the doctors, nurses, and staff treat each child and each parent like family?
The atmosphere is warm and inviting, it does not smell like a hospital (despite being a thoroughly sterile environment), the walls are painted with kids in mind and decorated with heartfelt art work created by the kids living there.
Though there are only 78 beds on campus, there are three different housing options available based on how long a child will need treatment – from a week to a handful of years.
No matter how long a child receives treatment, no matter how long their family must live in St. Jude’s housing, no matter how far they must travel for the life-giving, life-saving treatment they need, they will never receive a bill – not for medical care, not for housing, not for food and not for travel.
It costs $2.2 MILLION dollars A DAY to keep this miracle in Memphis open and saving lives…and it all comes from donations. (That’s SIXTY-SIX million dollars a month for those of you doing the math). Here’s another fact that just might blow your mind – 75% of the money that comes in is from individual donors and the average gift is a beautiful and heartfelt $35. Think about this fact the next time you head out to dinner, or pay your monthly gym membership.
$35 is life giving.
Power of 5 – Two years ago, I visited Zambia, Africa as part of the Power of 5 Program and that experience has never left my soul. There is so much I take for granted. My small people have enough food to fill their bellies every day. They have electricity and education. I sat with mothers who worry daily their children may not make it to the age of five. They worry….are their children getting the nutrients they need to grow and thrive?
It is heartbreaking that in many cases, that answer had been no, but Amway™ and its Nutrilite™ Power of 5 Campaign are making great strides, one child, one family at a time. As the largest vitamin distributor in the world, Amway provides a micronutrient supplement to families with great need in five different areas around Lusaka (as well as ten other countries around the world.)
This micronutrient is mixed with a child’s food once a day in order to provide the nutrition they need.
Every 30 days, the families I met, along with 200+ other families trek to one of five distribution centers in Lusaka, Zambia to listen to an educational talk, see their children weighed and measured for tracking and pick up their monthly nutrition, their Little Bits, for their little ones.
Amway is doing this work in nearly a dozen countries – with a commitment to continue expanding.
Consider supporting them?
Heifer International – This is a beautiful way to gift a tangible item that is life-changing for a family in need. For 70 years now, they have been working to combat poverty in some of the areas that need it the most (125 countries around the world) – but not simply by  – if you will allow the adage – giving men and women fish, but actually teaching them how to fish. Their goal has long been to provide farmers with the opportunity to learn skills and change their circumstances rather than strictly benefitting from gifts from others.
A goat can be purchased for $120 and once given to a family, not only will it be a source of food for them – milk, cheese and yogurt, but these products can be packaged and sold at market, helping the family to earn an income they so desperately need. Other animal gift options include a heifer (naturally) for $500, an alpaca for $150, a pig for $120, rabbits for $60, honeybees for $30, a flock of chicks for $20 and so many more. If the amount you would like to give is less, you can also gift a portion of any of these animals. They also support women’s empowerment and there are ways you can give specifically to this category.
As part of their core mission, Heifer supports Passing on the Gift – this means the families who are gifted don’t allow that gift to stop with them. They share the training they receive and pass on the first female offspring of their livestock to another family.
Check out their gift catalog.
How do you give back this time of year? I would love to hear any additional ideas you would add to this list.
Happy Holidays! And happy giving.

Traveling by Train
My friend and colleague Forrest and I haphazardly travelled across east Africa to Zanzibar in July of 2017 using any and all available means of transportation. This particular segment of our trip was by train.
In part to poor planning, and part from a complete submission to the present moment, we shelved our itinerary in Zambia. Our original thoughts on reaching Dar es Salaam, Tanzania - the country’s largest city, and Zanzibar ferry hub - combined boat, train, and bus. However the uncertainty of transport in rural Africa, if anything, impressed upon the casual disregard for time. We knew the TAZARA (Tanzanian-Zambian Railway) had a station near us in Kasama, northern Zambia, and that it left twice a week for Dar. It seemed reasonable and straightforward enough, and simplified our travel through a country that neither of us had any practical experience with. After a brief discussion we both agreed to take the train east.
We arrived at the station at 2:00am, a comfortable time between the 11:00pm and 5:00am window the train “could be expected to arrive,” according to the desk clerk. The terminal smelled of sweat and urine and intensified in nauseating waves. Sleeping bodies and luggage were piled indistinguishably against the wall at a distance from the bathrooms. The smell of human feces was wounding, and naturally, all available floor space had been taken farthest away from the toilets. Four indignant drunks harangued about the plight of sobriety, which adverted my attention from the sordid bathroom affair. I wanted to believe it was their right by occupation to be given beer, and getting drunk provided a civic service commensurate to extinguishing fires or educating children. The terminal’s big box architecture amplified the drunks’ tirade to pernicious levels, testing the limits of my patience for sleeping on cold ground and breathing shitty air. We slept as much as irritable, sleep-deprived foreigners could in a cold defunct train station, and hoped that we didn’t have to use the toilets.
Tumblr media
Buying an class ticket granted us exclusive privileges to the VIP waiting room in the station. The room was furnished with sagging couches, a broken television, and an empty bar; outwardly extravagant but structurally broken. The one functioning perk however was a heater. The details described herein are meaningless because the room remained locked for the extent of our time at the station. We stayed put in the terminal overflowing with growls, cries, drunks, piss, shit, goats, birds, old women, young boys, and a restless desire to get on the tracks. The train was dependably late, looking like a warhorse withered from attrition, and it drove me up the goddamn wall.
The single engine pulled ten assorted carriages identifiable from the amount of humans piled in them. Economy was boisterously overloaded with children and elderly, the dining car sparsely populated with delicate but eager travelers, and first and second class timorous with locked windows for fear of thieves. The engine pulled strongly and the heavy jolts betrayed the state of the rail. After the first 24 hours of travel however, I felt adequately acclimated to the steely undulation of steel on steel. I had my proverbial sea legs for the sway of train across the country.
Tumblr media
We had purchased second-class tickets wanting first class. Our failure to acquire first class was a blessing however, realizing after boarding that second-class accommodation was in a newly renovated train car, compared to the outdated and unmaintained first. Our cabin was no larger than a bathroom found in a modest American household, but it comfortably slept six grown men. Leave it to the Chinese to economize space on trains. The four others in our cabin were a general cross section of central and east Africa. One was a Zimbabwean by nationality but lived in Zambia and did business in the DRC. Another was Zambian but spoke more Kiswahili than his Zambian mother tongue (Kiswahili is one of the official languages of Tanzania and the lingua franca used throughout east Africa, but rarer in Zambia). While quietly absorbing these personalities in confinement I couldn’t help but think, when juxtaposed, our monoculture, monolingual melting pot in the US appearing more shibboleth than monolith. The average amount of languages spoken by a sub-Saharan African is three, and it embarrassed me that these very respectable and intelligent men spoke my language, but I did not speak theirs.
Tumblr media
I began this trip with two expectations: to see another part of Africa and form a working understanding of the language Kiswahili. Hesitant at first to take a train because of the limited exposure to the language and culture, I considered the predominantly local demographic of the TAZARA, and the ease of making conversation when confined and restive. The close proximity to Kiswahili and its speakers on the train was at a sacrifice though. We traversed the entire country by train, rendering the experience to what began to feel like a prepackaged safari by train rather than Land Cruiser, observing people instead of big game. Although I was learning about Kiswahili, it felt decontextualized like learning Spanish from a textbook rather than over tapas.
The conductor in Kasama told us the trip would take one day, but online reviews said expect two to three. The bulk of those 47 hours traveling across continental east Africa were spent in a rumbling dining car smelling of burnt oil and fish. The kitchen maintained a steady output of beer and coffee keeping us caffeinated, buzzed, or both for the hours we had our eyes open. Head throbbing from last night’s cocktail of stimulants, we’d watch the passing hills and make small talk with English-speaking Africans and an occasional European on vacation. At lunch and dinner hours the tables would fill with patrons bantering in Kiswahili, Chinyanja, or Ichibemba, all unfamiliar to me beside a fleeting word-in-common with Sierra Leone’s Krio or Temne. Immediately after crossing into Tanzania the various languages used amongst the crowd dwindled to only Kiswahili, as did the accepted currency, the Tanzanian Schilling. “I’m not Zambian, I’m Tanzanian,” rebuked a TAZARA employee after I greeted them in Ichibemba, a widely spoken Zambian language. “And we only take Schillings now.” What little working vocabulary I had of the Zambian language was lost at the Tanzanian border, as was my pocketful of Zambian Kwacha.
Tumblr media
The real observations were made not of the countryside but of the mercurial temperament of people stuck on a train for three days. For the majority of passengers, sleep was grasped vertically, and often on the shoulder of a stranger. Tickets insured entrance onto the train, not for physical seating. One European traveler boarded mid-way through the trip with a first class ticket in hand, soon to realize all first class rooms were full. The self-entitlement of the west’s customer service culture doesn’t translate well in Africa, and little sympathy was given for his predicament. It was one of many signs that purchasing second class tickets was the right decision. The closer we crawled to Dar es Salaam, the more congested the train became. At one point I could not reach my cabin because of the unrelenting line of women in wait for the bathroom, and the growing heaps of luggage and cargo that doubled as beds for children. Any and all available space was utilized, and in typical African fashion, the discomfort was inured as an immutable reality.
Tumblr media
Wikipedia states the current state of the railway is “minimally operational and near collapse,” which seems drastic after riding. Perhaps by western standards, yes, however the train connects over 100 stations, most of which are rural communities to larger urban centers that lie across international boundaries. The railway is a lifeline in many ways, moving not just freight and people, but capital. At every station we’d stop and await the local vendors selling fruits, nuts, meats, trinkets, phone minutes, bags of rice, chickens, fish; a ramshackle market enlivened for a mere 5-10 minutes twice a week simply because of access to disposable income. These stops are what protracted the trip to 47 hours, but they are what made the experience unique. For me, the raucous, invigorating dysfunction that I’ve come to love and admire in many African communities was incorporated and reinvented in my conception of America’s tradition of locomotive travel. Would I ride the train again? Probably not, but I am glad I did when I had the chance.

What is Emerald Stone? Emerald Stone Properties – All About Emerald Stone Many of People want to know what are the Benefits of Emerald Stone? Before wearing or using Emerald Stone Must to Know how Emerald Stone are Good For Luck and for Health. We’re trying to Discuss what is Emerald and what are the Benefits Please Read this Article and Leave a Comment. If you have more Knowledge about Emerald Stone Please Share with Us 🙂
Diamonds are the traditional choice for engagement rings and other fine jewelry purchases, but they are not the only option out there. When a splash of rich colors is desired, emeralds are the precious gemstone that shines. These medium-to-deep green stones are among the most valuable gemstones in the world. Known for being a little more delicate than diamonds, emeralds are found naturally in deposits located in countries all over the world. While emeralds today come primarily from Colombia and Zambia, ancient mines were located in such places as Egypt and Austria. (Read: Uses of Ruby Stone)
A traditional gemstone often associated with royalty in the past, emeralds remain highly sought after today. They are often worn on their own in gold or platinum settings in earrings, rings, necklaces, and bracelets. They can also be used to offset diamonds and other precious gemstones or be offset by them in varying jewelry designs. The “emerald cut” is one of the most frequently used for this stone. This rectangular cut earned its name because it is one of the most flattering options for displaying this stone’s natural beauty. Depending on the quality of the emerald in question, the prices attached to these precious gemstones can rival diamonds. An emerald’s value is determined by its color and clarity, among other factors. The highest quality stones tend to have a slightly cloudy inside texture, which adds to natural beauty.
(Read More: Uses of Sapphire Stone)
When selecting an emerald, the color and clarity will matter if a quality stone is desired. Understanding these characteristics can help explain why some emeralds sell for thousands, but others may only fetch under $100. Color – Emeralds can technically present with hues that range from a yellowish-green to a blue-green. The main hue in a quality emerald must be green. For beryl (the stone that emeralds come from) to be called an emerald, it must have a medium to dark tone. (Read: Uses of Peridot Stone)
Clarity – Since emeralds are quite a bit softer by nature than diamonds, the clarity of this type of gemstone is not quite the same. Whereas a jeweler must inspect a diamond through magnification to see cracks and fissures, emeralds are graded by the naked eye. The fact is a flawless emerald is an extremely unusual find. To improve clarity, emeralds are often treated with oil. Like diamonds, however, the fewer imperfections found in stone, the higher the value is likely to be. While diamonds are a classic choice for jewelry, emeralds provide a rich, colorful alternative. These precious gemstones are favored by many for their stunning appearance when worn on their own or in combination with other stones. (Read: Benefits of Topaz Stone)
Emerald Engagement Rings
There many kinds of engagement ring available in the market today. Some of these are designed to use diamonds, emeralds, and other gemstones. The only setback when buying these rings is that it is hard to find a unique one since most of these rings in the market today are produced in mass and thus not really unique in their design. Having a ring, created and designed uniquely for you by a crafted artist is of course much more expensive than what you find in most jewelry stores today. Emeralds are best for engagement rings. Emerald rings give out a classic elegant look. If you want a modern design in your wedding set of jewelries then emerald certainly is a beautiful stone that complements modern or classic designs today. Most often emerald stones are used with stones like diamonds which can create beautiful settings in engagement and wedding rings. Emeralds are cut the same way as diamonds. These stones are quite hard too but must be properly taken care of to maintain its splendor.
n emerald ring in princess cut is best for an engagement ring set with the emerald sone. This is the best option for diamond princess cut rings which are quite expensive. Besides, emerald when properly maintained can last you a lifetime. You can purchase it online for easy and convenient shopping or you can go to your favorite jeweler and purchase it there. When buying one, make sure to set up a maintenance plan already to take care of it. Taking proper care of your investment can bring you a long way.
