When we were in Atlanta last weekend, we found ourselves in a Gorjana jewelery store. I’ve bought Gorjana jewelry for years, since before they had any in-person stores at all. They used to have these ridiculous semi-annual sales where their jewelry would go 50-75% off, but they haven’t done that in a long time, since establishing themselves as an expanding national jewelry chain. I don’t buy from them very much anymore because I’ve been trying to buy mostly fine jewelry instead of demi-fine, even though it is difficult for me to justify the price. But I’ve found that while vermeil works great for earrings and bracelets, it’s not good for rings and necklaces because the gold finish wears off so quickly.

But Gorjana came out with a fine jewelry line a while back, so I took a look at it while we were in the store, and then it occurred to me that it might be special to buy a slender little ring for my left hand ring finger. I have two beautiful diamond wedding rings, and both (BOTH!) irritate my finger if I wear them all the time. But I wear a variety of these kinds of slender little gold rings (from Catbird and Mejuri) on my other fingers all the time and they don’t bother me. And I dislike not wearing a ring on my ring finger. So I bought one for myself. Or at least technically Dominic bought it because I had gotten mugged the night before. It has the teeniest little diamonds on it. Very cute! And now I can wear my big flashy diamond eternity band when I want to be fancy and wear this little gal the rest of the time.

Lately I’ve been trying to buy a few real gold pieces of jewelry so that I can keep the jewelry longterm. For a while now I’ve been buying vermeil or demi-fine jewelry, and that’s been an affordable option for jewelry (especially earrings) that lasts longer, but ultimately, no matter how much I try to care for these pieces the gold plating wears away and they don’t look nice anymore.

For our anniversary Dominic gave me a platinum diamond eternity band. They’re lab diamonds, but it’s still an incredibly nice ring--nicer than my diamond solitaire wedding ring. I can no longer wear that ring in its current setting because something about the white gold has worn away or changed and now it causes an allergic reaction if I wear it for more than 24 hours at a time. I just haven’t worn a wedding ring for the past several years, so it’s nice to have the eternity band for that finger now.

A few months ago I also bought myself a teeny tiny white sapphire pendant on a delicate gold chain. When I won the poetry contest for my department, I used the prize money to buy a small plain emerald ring and little emerald hoop earrings. And that’s it. That’s the extent of my fine jewelry. But these pieces, as small as they are (excepting the eternity band) bring me a lot of joy. Truthfully, they’re so delicate that I don’t know how long they’ll actually last, but hopefully they’ll last a long time and I can keep enjoying them.

Good art didn’t exist. It was all about the meaning. “A painting, a drawing, oh, food! Jewelry… It’s. It’s a little piece of their heart and mind that they’re giving and opening up to you. That’s so magical.”

I also think that being told you’re kind or caring is very sweet too, you can’t fake those things, you can’t buy them.” Cheeks flushed as they realized how starcrossed they probably sounded. “I think maybe, hm. Anything that could help me grow. Maybe helping me with a class, inviting me to a workshop, showing me that they care about me and my happiness now and in the future.”

“So my worst nemesis is my alarm, it’s such a non-graceful way to wake up, don’t you think? A day where I’m woken up by the sunlight and get to start my day when it decides it’s time, for starters. I’d love to be anywhere back in California, traipsing along the beach, painting all day, then watching the sun fade away until I count the stars. I know it’s nothing earth shattering, but it’s a day of being one with the world, letting it inspire you and become you.That’d be pretty special, and I can’t say I’ve ever been able to do it.” Bee let out a small sigh at the image in her mind.

When would they stop being so afraid of what others thought? That was the first question that came into their mind. “Choosing art as my forever path is new, I was trying to be more on the marketing comms side for a while… and it’s scary, you know? Putting yourself out there. I’d like to know if this was the right path. To be reassured that it’s worth it… That this isn’t just me being selfish or anything, that it’s real. That this is meant to be.”

“𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐨𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩?”

Clearly, they hadn’t thought of that question before, head tilting in thought. “I think the most valuable friendship or relationship is when you can bring different perspectives to the table, it’s nothing if you can’t learn from them. Being similar is amazing but being different is beautiful too.”

“𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚 𝐜𝐚𝐭 𝐨𝐫 𝐝𝐨𝐠 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧?”

“It depends what I’m doing! I grew up with cats. It’s nice to have someone to lounge with and be lazy, and cats definitely are magical. No, I won’t take any questions, there’s something special about them.” Shrugging, she followed up with the second part, “Dogs are great for being out and going places. They’re the adventurer. They’re the calling back to our caveman times, again, no questions.”

“Me…” Bee trailed off, “I’m sorry, that got heavy. I just, I think. There’s always this part of me that’s questioning everything I do, even with people I’ve known forever. I want someone who’s going to be able to be comfortable with me as I figure out me.”

“On my own? I think I had a little breakdown in the studios the other day, it was like nothing was going right, blue was looking red, black was looking white, nothing made sense and I broke. I didn’t know what to do or how to fix it,” Bee admitted. “With someone else…Uh, probably the last time I called my sister, I missed her so much, missed the fact that I had to miss her birthday, a lot of missed chances and a lot of tears.”

“𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮?”

“Mildly, it’s nice to have someone to break your walls with, someone to hold hands or cuddle… but I do that with my friends too. I guess that’s intimate? But not what you’re asking, is it?” Waiting for some clarification, Bianca continued either way. “It’s a nice way to connect, but it’s not the only way.”
