Lately I’ve been trying to buy a few real gold pieces of jewelry so that I can keep the jewelry longterm. For a while now I’ve been buying vermeil or demi-fine jewelry, and that’s been an affordable option for jewelry (especially earrings) that lasts longer, but ultimately, no matter how much I try to care for these pieces the gold plating wears away and they don’t look nice anymore.

For our anniversary Dominic gave me a platinum diamond eternity band. They’re lab diamonds, but it’s still an incredibly nice ring--nicer than my diamond solitaire wedding ring. I can no longer wear that ring in its current setting because something about the white gold has worn away or changed and now it causes an allergic reaction if I wear it for more than 24 hours at a time. I just haven’t worn a wedding ring for the past several years, so it’s nice to have the eternity band for that finger now.

A few months ago I also bought myself a teeny tiny white sapphire pendant on a delicate gold chain. When I won the poetry contest for my department, I used the prize money to buy a small plain emerald ring and little emerald hoop earrings. And that’s it. That’s the extent of my fine jewelry. But these pieces, as small as they are (excepting the eternity band) bring me a lot of joy. Truthfully, they’re so delicate that I don’t know how long they’ll actually last, but hopefully they’ll last a long time and I can keep enjoying them.

Good art didn’t exist. It was all about the meaning. “A painting, a drawing, oh, food! Jewelry… It’s. It’s a little piece of their heart and mind that they’re giving and opening up to you. That’s so magical.”

Anything that could help me grow. Maybe helping me with a class, inviting me to a workshop, showing me that they care about me and my happiness now and in the future.”

“So my worst nemesis is my alarm, it’s such a non-graceful way to wake up, don’t you think? A day where I’m woken up by the sunlight and get to start my day when it decides it’s time, for starters. I’d love to be anywhere back in California, traipsing along the beach, painting all day, then watching the sun fade away until I count the stars. I know it’s nothing earth shattering, but it’s a day of being one with the world, letting it inspire you and become you.That’d be pretty special, and I can’t say I’ve ever been able to do it.” Bee let out a small sigh at the image in her mind.

When would they stop being so afraid of what others thought? That was the first question that came into their mind. “Choosing art as my forever path is new, I was trying to be more on the marketing comms side for a while… and it’s scary, you know? Putting yourself out there. I’d like to know if this was the right path. To be reassured that it’s worth it… That this isn’t just me being selfish or anything, that it’s real. That this is meant to be.”

“It depends what I’m doing! I grew up with cats. It’s nice to have someone to lounge with and be lazy, and cats definitely are magical. No, I won’t take any questions, there’s something special about them.” Shrugging, she followed up with the second part, “Dogs are great for being out and going places. They’re the adventurer. They’re the calling back to our caveman times, again, no questions.”

Hello! I think I want an emerald ring but do know where to start looking. Can you help with ideas? (Only if you’ll have fun doing so 😊)

hi! i'd love to help! my first piece of advice would be to check out this post i made a while back about how to shop for jewelry. (if tumblr is funky and my link doesn’t work, it should be on page 4 of my jewelry tag on my blog.)

i asked @joeypotter1998 what she thinks of your question, as she’s worked in a jewelry store for a couple of years, and she gave pretty good advice: “i think i would say that something that’ll guide where to look is what quaity she’s looking for (lab created vs. natural, gold plated vs. 10k vs. 14k) or what price she’s looking to stay in, which will inform the quality of the piece she can get.”

in the jewelry guide post that i linked to you, most of my recommendations are for fine jewelry. however, if you were looking for a “demi” fine ring, local eclectic has a few appealing options.

if i were you, though, i’d either spring for - or save up to spring for - a real heirloom piece that you can have for ages and pass down. that means gold that’s at least 14k - it won’t tarnish, and it’ll retain its value very well - and i would prefer a natural emerald. gold is very expensive right now, and the cost will likely keep on rising, but it should also be noted that emeralds are very beautiful and expensive stones as well. natural emeralds, especially ones that come from colombia and have few to no inclusions, are often rarer and more expensive than diamonds! they’re absolutely gorgeous, but they will cost you. lastly, emeralds are softer than sapphires, so while they’re not the worst option for a gem on an everyday ring, you will want to be particularly careful with whatever emerald ring you get! 

i hope this is a good starting place for your emerald ring quest! definitely go through my jewelry guide, look through some of the designers and stores i’ve linked to, and see what strikes your fancy. your ask was very general, so i have no idea what your style or price range is, but that should help you get started!

something i neglected to mention in my jewelry guide post is how helpful instagram is. so, so many jewelry designers, stores, and vintage sellers are on instagram, are active, and are tagging their merchandise. if i was looking for an emerald ring, i’d definitely hop on instagram and scroll through the #emeraldring, #goldemeraldring, #platinumemeraldring, #vintageemeraldring, and #antiqueemeraldring tags for a bit! i’m sure you’ll find some interesting people and pieces of jewelry doing that. also, instagram is a really great place to find vintage/antique/”previously loved” pieces, and generally speaking, vintage and antique jewelry is a much better value than buying new pieces. don’t get me wrong, i love love love supporting artisans and jewelry makers and buying new pieces of jewelry directly from them, but don’t write off vintage and antique is what i’m saying! it may take a bit more digging and waiting to find a vintage or antique emerald ring that you love, but definitely consider it.

one final thing: i’d absolutely recommend starting a pinterest board! i have pinterest boards for earrings, necklaces, and rings, and whenever i find a piece of jewelry that really speaks to me, even if it’s totally out of my price range or something i’d never wear with my lifestyle, i pin it. it gives me ideas, and some of the pieces i pin i do actually want to own someday, and i have a convenient place where i’ve compiled photos and links to them all! if i were you and wanted an emerald ring, something that could potentially be a big investment, i’d play the long game. look through my jewelry guide, trawl through my links, don’t neglect ebay, the realreal, 1stdibs, and instagram, and get pinning! through that process, you’ll get an idea of what you like, what you LOVE, and the different price ranges you’ll be looking at.
