Yawn Bill Ryder-Jones (Domino) (released 2018)
Once upon a time I was a huge fan of The Coral. I bought their debut in real time and continued buying them all the way through 2016 with their ninth album Distance Inbetween. (I peeked at their discography and they've since put out five albums, two of which have been released in 2023!) I was so into The Coral I bought various solo albums by the band when they went on hiatus to allow band members to do their own thing: Ian Skelly's Cut From A Star and James Skelly & The Intenders' Love Undercover. Even weirder yet is those two album still sit on my CD shelves, never having been traded away.
Bill Ryder-Jones was the band's lead guitarist and he split from the band in 2008. When he released his first solo album in 2011, If..., it was based on the 1979 novel If On A Winter's Night A Traveler by Italo Calvino and I just happened to be reading it at the time, a peculiar coincidence that assured I bought a copy. That alone jump started my interest in Ryder-Jones' solo work (and the fact he was from The Coral didn't hurt).
But about the time I grew weary of The Coral, I stopped buying Ryder-Jones' solo work as well. The was more out of losing track of him. I bought A Bad Winds Blows In My Heart and West Kirby County Primary, enjoyed them both immensely and then he seemingly disappeared. When his forthcoming album (January 2024) Iechyd Da was announced, I preordered it, excited that he was back. Then I checked his discogs page and discovered he never disappeared.
He released two albums I was unaware of: Yawn in 2018 and a companion album titled Yawny Yawn in 2019. If you want both on vinyl, good luck. They are seemingly difficult to find.
I try to avoid the Black Friday sales (this year I'm ignoring RSD's Black Friday) and when Domino sent an e-mail claiming they opened their "vaults" and discovered a lot of old vinyl pressings they were trying to unload, I didn't even open it up. Actually I wasn't opening much of my mail last week, just letting it sit for various reasons. But when I finally realized they might just have Yawn and Yawny Yawn, I beat a path to their link and discovered, sure enough, they had both! The bad news was, I let too much time elapse and Yawny Yawn was sold out. Oh well.
Above you see the cover of Yawn and the back cover. It wasn't until today that I even realized Ryder-Jones signed this copy. You can see his gold pen signature of "Bill" in the upper right hand corner on the album cover. Below you can see the hype sticker closer.

GameStop Corp. could get a sales boost this year from big videogame releases like “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” and “Hogwarts Legacy.” But when the gaming retailer reports first-quarter results on Wednesday after the market close, profit could still prove hard to come by. The results for GameStop GME, +1.54% will arrive three months after the company put up a surprise profit in the holiday season, the retail chain’s first quarter in the black in two years. Continuing outperformance could depend on sales of popular games like Warner Bros. Discovery’s billion-dollar blockbuster “Hogwarts Legacy,” which launched during GameStop’s first quarter, and “Tears of the Kingdom,” which went on sale in May. Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter, in a research note on Friday, wrote that recent store checks found that customers were lining up outside GameStop stores to buy the new “Zelda” game when it debuted last month for the Nintendo Switch. The game sold more than 10 million copies within its first three days of availability, Nintendo Co Ltd. 7974, +0.61% said last month, making it the fastest-selling Nintendo game ever in the Americas. For more: ‘The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’ sold more than 10 million copies worldwide in just three days That game alone, Pachter said, “could conceivably drive north of $75 million of new software sales for GameStop” in its second quarter. And it is just one of a string of hot new releases. Stifel analysts on Sunday wrote that the slate of game releases over the first half of the year “boasts at least one game the last 4 consecutive months that has shifted at least 5 million units during the first few weeks in release, providing additional confidence behind our original forecast for ‘strong’ full game sales in ’23.” Nielsen data indicated that for May, “Tears of the Kingdom” was the top console or PC game that U.S. consumers “plan to buy next,” the Stifel analysts wrote. Other top choices include “Hogwarts Legacy,” as well as “Diablo IV,” which Activision Blizzard Inc. ATVI, +0.20% fully released Tuesday, and “Street Fighter 6,” which launched last week. Still, Pachter noted that despite GameStop’s cost-cutting efforts and the benefit of holiday-season momentum, its operating margin in the fourth quarter was just above 2%, a sign that the company still had a lot more work to do. And he said broader trends — namely the migration toward online and mobile gaming and shopping, as well as subscription software — remained challenges. “Cost cuts have recently improved ,” Pachter said, “but it is unrealistic to expect breakeven or better quarterly results until the holiday quarter.” GameStop has only produced three profitable quarters since mid-2019, and all three were holiday periods. For the first quarter, Pachter said he expected a slight sales dip from a year ago. That decline, he said, would follow “robust growth for PS5 hardware and collectibles momentum offset by softness for Nintendo’s Switch and a challenging comp for Microsoft’s Xbox.” Still, any detailed remarks from executives on future expectations, or color on demand trends, is unlikely during GameStop’s earnings call. Since the retailer found itself on the meme-stock roller coaster in 2021, executives have become more tight-lipped during those calls, forgoing Q&A sessions with Wall Street analysts and keeping calls short. While GameStop shares have faded from the atmosphere-busting gains seen at the dawn of the meme-stock era two years ago, they’re still above anything seen in 2019 and 2020, with a market capitalization of roughly $7.4 billion as of Tuesday. The stock is down 24% over the past 12 months, however. “GameStop shares trade at a level that fails to consider its many challenges ahead,” Pachter said in his note, adding that he was keeping his underperform rating on the stock. Black Friday sales continued to attract significant consumer attention this year, with shoppers indulging in holiday discounts both in stores and online. Despite retailers launching sales earlier in the season, US consumers displayed a preference for shopping on Black Friday itself, resulting in a notable rise in retail sales compared to the days leading up to the event.
Black Friday Sales See a Boost
Retail sales, both in-store and online, experienced a 3.4% year-over-year increase on Black Friday, according to Mastercard SpendingPulse. Online shopping drove much of this growth, with e-commerce sales rising 14.6% compared to last year. In contrast, in-store sales saw less than a 1% increase.
Apparel was a popular category among online shoppers, even as warmer fall weather reduced demand for heavier seasonal clothing. There was also a marked increase in grocery spending during the two weeks leading up to Black Friday, and many consumers spent generously at restaurants the day after Thanksgiving.
Record-Breaking Online Sales
Online shoppers set new records this year, with Adobe Analytics reporting $10.8 billion spent online on Black Friday, a significant jump from $9.8 billion in 2023. Thanksgiving Day itself also saw record-breaking online spending, with shoppers shelling out $6.1 billion.
The trend is expected to continue, with Adobe projecting that Cyber Monday will emerge as the biggest shopping day of the year. Sales are estimated to hit a record $13.2 billion, representing a 6.1% increase from last year.
Global e-commerce platforms like Shopify also reported record-breaking sales. Shopify’s global Black Friday sales reached $5 billion, with the average cart price for US shoppers estimated at $157. Popular purchases included t-shirts, skincare products, and vitamins.
Holiday Spending Trends
The National Retail Federation (NRF) previously estimated that Americans would spend an average of $902 per person during the holiday season on gifts, food, decorations, and other items. This figure is $25 higher than last year and $16 above the previous record set in 2019. Of that total, approximately $261 is expected to go toward food, candy, decorations, and other holiday essentials.
Jewelry, electronics, and apparel emerged as the top purchases on Black Friday, with consumers taking advantage of significant discounts.
Environmental Concerns About Overconsumption
While Black Friday sales offer savings, concerns have been raised about the environmental impact of mass-produced goods. Flora Bagenal, producer of the Netflix documentary Buy Now!, highlighted that many discounted items, such as electronics, toys, and clothing, are quickly discarded, contributing to a cycle of overconsumption and waste.
She urged consumers to make thoughtful choices when shopping, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing durable products over cheaply made items that may not last long. Responsible purchasing decisions, she noted, can help reduce the environmental toll of holiday shopping.
