Something, I personally think, some Power Scalers fail to recognize, when they pitch Zoro and Sanji against each other, is that Sanji's Story has never been about being 'the strongest'.
I often see them going on and on about how Zoro could easily beat Sanji and, while not easily, yeah. I agree. Zoro is stronger than Sanji and Zoro could probably beat him.
[even Sanji thinks so, otherwise he wouldn't have asked Zoro that one favor!]
But these power Scalers often try to make it appear as if that is somehow a flaw in Sanji's character when it is not.
Sanji's Story at its core is about healing.
Zoro's is about protection.
You can have one without the other but it won't do you much good.

Sanji As a Cam Boy (NSFW)
Imma do Zoro Next. Yes this is a new series.
CW: Twitter Links so turn ur volume down
Sanji
Tumblr media
This slut would be the most open to it.
He wouldn’t care about showing his whole face however he loves close ups
He usually enjoys being a woman’s play thing or solos. Completely satisfying her while he records or is on live.
He’s surprisingly so good at what he does.
Honestly he is a new man on camera and it turns you on a little
Link 1: Like I said Sanji has an addiction to pleasuring women. It would more than likely be you he eats out and if you consent to it ofc and he’ll even make sure to never show your face. He hopes you say yes, lil cocky bastard wants to show the world he can make you cum so easily with his tongue. Plus, he just simply loves how you taste.
Link 2: If you do agree to be his little…side kick for his shows it will eventually turn into a show all about you. Sanji is absolutely in love with your pussy and that doesn’t limit to how much he loves playing with it with his cock or fingers. He never likes to tease you for too long though but seeing your slick get so wet all for him. He has to record it for the world to see.
Link 3: Sanji loves appreciating your tiddies. Small, big, perky, saggy he dont give af before he starts the real business off on his lives he takes his time giving all his attention to your chest. Murmuring how much he loves them.
Link 4: Like I said he’s YOUR plaything. He has no issues with you doing what you want. And if it means to sit back and relax as you stroke his cock just for his viewers to hear him moan and whimper so be if.
Link 5: His fans know about his smoking habit, and a very generous fan donated a request for him to fuck you while smoking. Luckily that wasn’t an issue when he figured out what position to do it in.
Link 6: Sometimes Sanji just likes to show his viewers how a typical night between you both go. You’d be in the bed relaxing and the moment you see him set up his camera in the corner of your eye you smirk. You try to ignore him on some days just to be a brat, but unfortunately it never works.

musician!sanuso au in which usopp is a very famous singer (by 'very famous' meaning: being famous in specific, indie circles but, yeah, famous. he has a decent amount of fans) under the name of "sogeking" and sanji (who thinks, by the way, that he's extremely straight) falls in love with him and his voice. important fact: usopp wears the sogeking costume, so sanji doesn't know what he looks like.
basically, sanji is friends with robin, and franky (her boyfriend) knows a guy (brook) that can get them all (luffy and zoro too) tickets to see this sogeking guy. sanji doesn't actually want to go, if he's being honest, but it's robin's idea so of course he says yes. the thing is- she- she likes weird music, alright? her taste is a bit different from sanji's and he isn't sure about spending all night listening to some guy whispering weird stuff into a mic with a bit of an 80s energy and dark undertones. but, yeah, robin asks, so he goes.
on the other hand, usopp only wears the costume because he's always an anxious, insecure mess, and refuses to let others know he's the one singing. the only thing his father left him before going away was a guitar and the guy can't even play it now in front of others. awesome. and he never really intended to become "famous", it's just that kaya, nami and vivi (he's childhood best friends with kaya and met nami/vivi in high school) told him to participate in a music contest and one thing led to another and now he has a manager and plays for a lot of people who actually want to listen to him. he isn't complaining, but he's glad he's wearing a mask.
so, sanji goes to see sogeking.
and it kind of, sort of, definitely changes his life.
he's glad zoro is already chugging his third beer and does not care enough to look at sanji, because otherwise he would see the complete blushing mess he's been reduced to while listening to sogeking sing.
he falls in love. it can only be that. he keeps telling himself that it's just his voice. that it doesn't mean he likes men. but he knows the feeling of love all too well to ignore the way his heart is pounding against his chest with the sound of the drums.
he's fucked. he knows he's fucked. it's not just a fan thing. fuck. he wonders if this sogeking guy kisses the same way he sings.
the night goes on and he's hypnotized by sogeking, but it doesn't mean he isn't having a fucking crisis. the last song is playing when one of his friends asks him what is wrong with him (he doesn't remember who it is, maybe franky) and those simple words send him over the edge. because no, he's not fine. and no, he doesn't like a man. and god, he definitely isn't in love with a guy he doesn't even know and would never recognize without a mask.
which is a funny thought, having in mind what happens next.
sanji storms out of the concert to catch his breath because this has never, ever happened to him before. he believes in love at first sight. he's a romantic, after all. but this isn't it. this isn't about looks or fate. it's deeper than that. he can't get rid of sogeking's voice still playing in his mind. so he ends up in what seems to be an alleyway in the back of the building, and anxiously starts to smoke like the addict he is. he said he was going to quit this... he definitely isn't now.
oh, but he misses the way sogeking finishes his last song and runs away from the stage. he feels he's going to throw up. too many looks on him. too much noise. too much pressure. not even nami can stop him before he ends up in the same alleyway as sanji, leaning against the door and taking deep breaths. in and out in and out in and ou-
and well. fuck. turns out he isn't alone because now the most handsome guy he has ever laid his eyes upon is trying to guide him through his panic attack, which only causes him even more anxiety. he wants to kind of die right now, because at least he'll die staring at an angel.
sanji, on the other hand, just has the need to help him because he understands how fucked up these things are. so he helps him through it. helps the stranger calm down until they can finally speak properly together.
usopp thanks him, sanji says that it was nothing. and usopp says something like: "i'm sorry you had to, uh, help me. it's just- sometimes crowds are just too much, you know? people expect so much from you sometimes and you just can't take it. there are so many people here. why? it's not- fuck. i feel so damn isolated sometimes. i- i'm sorry. you probably don't want to hear-"
to which sanji responds with: "no. it's fine. i understand. i think i do."
"really?"
"really."
their friendship starts with relieved laughs of understanding and a panic attack in an alleyway after the concert that changed their lives.
they exchange numbers for some reason. maybe it's still the rush of the concert a few seconds ago or the sogeking inside of him, but usopp is the one to ask him. sanji seems a bit surprised, but doesn't mind in the slightest to keep seeing usopp. it might sound cheesy, but the cook seriously thinks they were meant to find each other. friendships are weird all the time and he has always been very poetic, after all.
i'm not gonna bore all of you with what happens in between because this is just a random thought i had on my way home from work, but basically:
sanji and usopp become close. almost even best friends. and usopp is completely head over heels for sanji, so of course he will never tell him about being sogeking. not only because it's an identity only his best friends know about, but because it's embarrassing, and refuses to lose what he has with sanji for this. sanji loves usopp. they're practically best friends now! and- and, well, okay. he has to admit there's something between them that he can't put a name to, but it's more than an intimate friendship. and, somehow, he seems to never be able to let go of sogeking. so he never makes a move on usopp. he's stupid for being in love with someone he doesn't even know, but sanji is a romantic, after all.
there will never be somebody else. he keeps saying that. it's sogeking for him.
usopp is glad sanji is always busy when he has concerts, so that way he doesn't need to lie to him and cancel any plans! (the truth is, sanji goes to those same concerts all the time and usopp never happens to see him because sanji is always afraid of being recognized. in theory, nobody knows about him being so head over heels for the singer. his friends don't know he's there, either).
but one day usopp recognizes him in the crows (it was just a matter of time) and instead of getting all anxious and running away like he thought he would if this happened, he just keeps singing for sanji and only sanji. and if the cook notices this, he doesn't move from where he's standing. he's hypnotized.
long story short, usopp has a crisis because he doesn't know if he should tell sanji the truth, now that he knows he's a fan of sogeking. because sogeking is this cool superhero singer and of course sanji likes him. but would he like him if he knew who he truly is? so he refuses to say anything, even if the girls keep telling him to be honest. and sanji is having a whole crisis because he's extremely in love and they haven't even fucking talked (little does he know haha). and, besides, there's usopp too. he- he really likes usopp too, he realizes. romantically. it could be love, if it wasn't for sogeking.
and i'm going to be honest with all of you, i have no idea what is going to happen. but even if i knew i wouldn't tell you because i like it enough to be a fanfic and y'all are probably going to have to wait.

You know what would be Interesting? Strawhats x Single Mother Reader! Like, maybe S/O escaped from an abusive relationship or the environment was bad for her kid or kids or something and she stumbled across the Strawhats and begged to be taken in even if it was to the next island. Of course, she worked much harder than anyone to earn her place in the crew, like cleaning, helping with cooking, sewing clothes, and most importantly, taking care of her kid/kids. HCs?
Strawhats x Single Mother S/O
(Ft. Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, Nami, Usopp, Robin, Franky)
(SFW)
Tumblr media
Luffy
It won't take much convincing from him to let them join the crew (hellooo! the way he asked Brook! boy doesn't care of reason)
Is very hands on and starts off as a 'fun parent' role for the child and they become inseparable
Since the mother is very busy proving herself she becomes appreciative of Luffy looking after her kid/s and builds a lot of respect for him before things go romantic
After some time, the mother can relax a bit more, feeling she has proved she belongs and hangs out with Luffy and her kid/s more
Luffy doesn't understand it at first but seeing the mother with her kid/s helps to cement his own feelings for her
Is very blunt about how he feels and is quick to ask them to be his S/o
It never crosses his mind that she is a single mother - he loves her and the kid/s immensely and is quick to become a father in their live/s
Is very supportive and kind to both mother and kid/s - can be very tentative to his s/o's needs and also fun and protective of the kid/s
Zoro
Doesn't take much notice of them at first as they are always busy
Finds the kid/s a pain as they're always running a muck with Luffy and other members such as Usopp and Chopper
Will eventually get used to their presence and warm up to the idea of them being around
Doesn't see the mother often as she is always busy but will occasionally run into her while she is cleaning and helping around the ship
Will probably do something very heroic like safe the kid/s without thinking, gaining the mothers interest, and becoming closer
After he saves them, the kid/s will want to spend more time with him, learning how to sword fight - mother eventually joins them to learn how to protect herself and her kid/s better, and feelings for each other start to evolve
Attempts to keep their relationship very quiet but they crew picks up on subtle things like Zoro being nicer to the kid/s and blow their secret
Won't ever think about her being a single mother, to him, he cares deeply enough to endure the package that comes with their relationship and is happy with his decision
Sanji
He will be very kind and helpful as soon as they step foot on the ship - insisting that they don't need to work so hard and very big on aftercare (always willing to run her a bath to relax etc)
The only part he lets her help with is cooking - loves spending as much time together as he can and always insists to try everything she makes
Is partially sceptical about the kid/s - isn't the biggest fan of children - and will try to hand them over to other members of the crew when they get too close
Will avoid smoking around both mother and kid/s and is efficient to cover up the smell any way he can
Listening to the mother talk about her kid/s will eventually persuade him to be more involved and actively try and play/interact with them
Always showing her (and the kid/s once he becomes friendly with them) with gifts, letting her know how much he thinks of her
His persistent attention and kindness to herself and her kid/s win her over, over time, and he makes a big romantic gesture, including the kid/s in the process, to ask her to be his S/o
Doesn't stop caring for her or the kid/s once they're together, nor cares about her being a single mother, only becoming more protective to them all and easily becoming a part of their little family
Nami
Is more concerned of the child when they first arrive and is very helpful of taking care of them while their mother is hard working for her place on the crew
Is very maternal so will be a second mother that the kid/s like to go to for help - they will quickly call her 'mum'
Will be kind to the mother and is very chatty and keep them company when they're busy proving their worth to be part of the crew, and over time, become inseparable
When docked she finds any chance to spend the day together with the mother and kid/s - using it almost as a family day out while everyone else is busy or grabbing supplies
Is very protective over the mother - snaps even more at the boys, especially when Sanji does his lovesick moments - and loves to hang out with them all as a family, easily slotting in as if the kid/s always had two mothers
Keeps the relationship secret as it is new for both of them - only a select few will know that they can trust (e.g., Robin/Zoro) who can easily keep their secret and cover for them when needed
On stormy nights, both the mother and kid/s all sneak into Nami's bed to keep 'safe' while she tells them stories and reassures them it will be okay (as the navigator they trust her opinion of weather)
When they come out as a couple everybody is open and reassuring of them (with the help of Nami's threats towards the boys) and their relationship becomes second-nature to the crew as if they have been together for years
Usopp
Is very cautious of the mother and their kid/s to begin with, the idea of children running around on the ship making him nervous
Eventually he will warm up to the kid/s and cause mischief with them, Luffy, and Chopper
At first, this behaviour scares the mother, but she calms down seeing how much fun the kid/s are having when she watches from afar
Won't cross paths for a while, only really communicating through the kid/s, who will brag to their mother about him
Insists he keep her company instead while she is cleaning/doing duties and grows fond of his charm and funny stories
He eventually grows accustomed to having her around and her company reminds him of when he would tell stories to Kaya - she becomes a comfort for him
Nervously ask her to be his s/o through some scheme with the kid/s (is too scared to do it on his own so they serve as a buffer - the kid/s blabber on about his feelings while he stands there embarrassed)
Sees the kid/s as his own and never questions the mother being a single parent, his relationship with her is the only thing he has ever been confident in
Robin
Is very kind and helpful to both the mother and the child and assists them both without ever being asked
Keeps the mother company and will read quietly when she is too busy to talk to her
Isn't as maternal as Nami but cares for the children like she does with Chopper
Likes to educate and read with the kid/s to keep entertained and bond with them on rainy days - likes to sit around in a room that is close to the mother to keep her in the picture as well
Shows the kid/s and mother a lot of archeological artefacts especially when the crew is docked - appreciates the company and someone to share her enthusiasm with
Isn't so much secretive about the relationship, she is just a very low-key and chill person so if the topic isn't mentioned she won't bring up the relationship (may get caught when kissing goodnight or something)
Is very loving to the mother and her kid/s even still in the relationship, is the happiest she has ever been, almost feeling like she has to protect her little family from harm
Is always worried about battles so will constantly aim to keep the family on the ship or away from battlefields when things happen to give them the best chance of survival and protection
Franky
At first won't take much notice of either mother of child as the mother is always busy doing duties and the kid/s are getting into trouble with Luffy or Usopp
Upon seeing the mother do her work, he insists on improving her routine and builds her the most useful contraptions he can think of to make her life easier
Even though she may protest against these ideas, he does it anyway, building her simple and also ridiculous items (may make them a little broken so he has to come and fix them a lot for her and show off his skills)
Will do the same with the kid/s (just more durable) - making both appropriate and some more dangerous toys to keep entertained
Tries to teach the kid/s "super" so they call all say it + do the little move (makes the kid/s laugh every time they do it together)
The kid/s being amazed by the big robot dude easily makes the mother intrigued and makes her hang out with him due to their kid/s wishes
In the relationship, nothing phases him and he thinks it is "super" work that she has done this for so long
Is very happy to become the "handy" dad role and teach the kid/s a lot of skills and building techniques to help them

Why SaNa over other ships?
Now, this is not to hate on other ships or downplay them, because what shipping really comes down to is often simply preference. What characters or dynamics you enjoy and what reasons you might have for liking different things.
No, this is simply my own reasons for why I like SaNa and also why I think they could make sense and thirdly why it’s possible Oda could be setting it up to actually happen in canon. It’s all just my views and I apologize if I forget a moment or add something that is more head canon, but again, this is my reasons and they will always be partially biased. (And there are too many to remember them all properly, so if you want to add feel welcome to do so.)
Tumblr media
I think Sanji and Nami is a lovely ship even based just on fan content and the community. But we also get some great moments in the manga, and I personally think there is potential for Oda to make an actual romance work between them.
1. Why I like Sanji and Nami
I personally fell in love with Sanji before I even started to watch or read One Piece, simply based on his voice actor (Hiroaki Hirata), his design and his fighting style. So obviously I already have a bias towards Sanji (SanjiAFsincedayone having a bias towards Sanji? Who knew?). I didn’t ship Sanji with Nami from the start and even now I am a multi shipper who enjoys fan content with Sanji as a main part of several pairs, most prominently ZoSan.
So, when did I fall for SaNa then? Well, I have talked about it in various posts before which you can find in my Masterpost - SanjiAFsincedayone, but for me shipping Sanji and Nami more seriously didn’t start until Thriller Bark.
Sanji took a knife in the back for her as she is dressed in a wedding dress, even this one scene is enough to explain why someone might like to ship them together.
Tumblr media
I for sure saw many SaNa moments before that, and felt Nami seemed special to Sanji, but I didn’t think it would have a big chance of happening and I preferred other ships above it when consuming fan material. Again, shipping is after all mostly fantasy and wanting more of something in a romantic/sexual way. Thriller Bark was when Sanji and Nami’s interactions caught my attention properly and I started to look a bit closer and actually note the way Oda wrote them and their moments. Going back after and rereading I think there is a lot of interesting things even before that. But the wedding theme and bridal carry and how Oda showed them in Thriller Bark was just too on the nose to ignore.
Tumblr media
What got me into shipping Sanji with Nami were mainly three things.
1. Their dynamics getting more interesting over time and Sanji and Nami being two of the most well written and interesting characters in One Piece. 2. Sanji consistently seeming to have a preference for Nami in combination with my belief that he is after true love and isn’t just a pervert forever doomed to be alone. 3.  The manga showing the potential of it actually happening and them finally catching my attention in Thriller Bark. Basically there are moments to follow and look at in the actual story as well, which in turn also leads to more fan content and material for shippers.
So point 1 and 2 really is mostly about my preference and how much I enjoy watching them together and how well I imagine they would fit together. I think their personalities and desires overlap well with them being able to understand and compromise for each other while aslo being on a similar level of intelligence and communication. They also have their kindness and empathy as a highlighted shared theme for their characters.
Tumblr media
Them talking about the Children in Punk Hazard or Sanji helping Nami turn in the argument between both Luffy and Vivi and Luffy and Usopp are some examples. Or Nami letting Sanji smoke in her body because she knows how hard it is for him. Small gestures like this show both understanding and a willingness to compromise.
Tumblr media
I think they are fun and have a relationship that right now might need working on, but it’s clear how much they care for each other and how they actually appriciate each other a lot.
Simply put I think they are interesting together and I think they could work as a romantic couple in the future, where their dreams and family oriented views migh allign. Again, from how I view them as characters and interpret their wants and possible futures I think Sanji and Nami is a good match. They can have a restaurant either traveling the world or docked close to both Cocoyashi and Zeff, Nami can tend to her mikans together with Sanji and they can manage a restaurant for a living. I also think they are the most parental members in the crew and has shown some possible signs of wanting to settle down with families. This would also work well as a final contrast to their less than happy childhoods (You might also want to check out my post (Part 3) Sanji x Nami hints - Thematic parallels).
There is a lot of potential in their dynamics and how different they seem while they also seem willing to adapt and try to understand each other that make them interesting as characters of romantic plots. At the same time they have enough in common to relate to each other and work well together. Again, as a fictional ship within the fandom there is a lot of great artists, writers etc. that truly explore them and make Sanji and Nami a great and fun ship with an active fandom to engage with.
Of course there are more shallow reasons like them matching in age and being good-looking but really I could ship Sanji with almost any woman if it was only about the looks. I mean, Purin is basically made to be a perfect match for Sanji, but I personally find his dynamic with Nami much more interesting and his dedication to Nami is of course unpraralleled thanks to the time Oda has spent on them over many years.
I love Sanji and Nami as individual characters and with the amount of moments between them there is also a lot to explore and enjoy in the manga. It makes them interesting in a third aspect for me, which is of course analysis and the potential of them actually ending up together and looking closer at the way Oda writes them from a story perspective. For me what we have gotten from Oda in terms of Sanji x Nami moments is very interesting and I see potential there even though it would need more development to truly work for the current story.
Tumblr media
But, again shipping doesn’t have to mean anything for the actual story... There are crack ships or slash ships that surely will never happen but that could still be great and fun to explore for the fans. Honestly, everyone is free to ship whatever they want. We all have different taste after all.
So, what about the manga then?
2. Why do I think they could make sense as a romantic couple even in canon?
First, my own view is that Sanji is someone who seeks true love, and as briefly shown with both Violet and Purin it seems like he would take an actual relationship seriously if given the chance. I also think it would make him happy and thus as Oda might want to create happy resolutions for the strawhats I think Sanji ending up with someone has quite a big chance of happening. This is combination with his preference for Nami and in turn Nami truly caring for him (though not yet in a romantic way) is something that makes me think it could happen. Other ships have potential too depending on how Oda decides to develop them, but considering how he keeps adding moments for SaNa in the way he does as of now I still think SaNa is the most likely ship for Sanji.
As I mentioned earlier I also think Nami has shown some possible inclinations for wanting a family (or at least being a great mother if we look at her with children in many arc, not the least Punk Hazard) and maybe even getting married eventually.
Tumblr media
If she ends up with someone we will need to see a more obvious attraction and want for romance from her no matter what ship we might consider. She has at this point not shown a lot, but I do think the thematic parallels she shares with Sanji in combination with how their moments are written has the potential to grow into something more.
As a romantic pair I think Sanji and Nami would be happy, he would adore her and take care of her and both of them would probably find that ideal. In fact it’s already a big part of their dynamics and seem to make them both happy. They also seem to try to understand and show interest in knowing each other as seen with several scenes and general attention towards each other’s backstories. They also challange each other in different ways and we have seen them compromise a few times. I think compared to many other relationship in the manga Oda has shown more personal moments between them. So a romantic additional aspect is not too far off. Not that Oda would make it happen now, but that he would lay down the groundwork for it to work by the end of the series.
In short I think they would make each other happy, but also challange and grow thanks to the other. I think their dreams of traveling the world with Nami drawing her map and Sanji cooking on all the seas and finding All Blue and then settiling down together close to both their “homes” in East Blue with a restaurant and family seems to fit them both. It wouldn’t always be easy, but I think they would actually enjoy their dynamics with Nami bossing Sanji around most of the time.
Now this all sounds nice and all, but it’s of course just my imagination based on biased interpretations of the manga. So where do I get it from?
3. The way SaNa is portrayed by Oda
Now this is really the biggest point... Because again, I can ship whatever characters I want and it is just for fun. It doesn’t have to happen for me to enjoy it or I wouldn’t ship Sanji with Zoro. But with Sanji and Nami there are legit reasons in addition to my preference that makes me think it could happen in the manga.
It might take years to actually go through it all in order with my additional interpretations, but I will try to go through the basics themes and moments that to me could indicate SaNa over any other Sanji or Namji ship.
I think the obvious thing to talk about first is simply how Sanji definitely has a romantic (and sexual) interest in Nami. No matter what other character you might see with either of them, this has been shown consistantly over the whole manga. You may argue that Sanji might be interested in others equally, and though I wouldn’t agree it’s a fair point. However from a story perspective it would still need to be resolved. It’s highly unlikely for Nami to end up with anyone unless Sanji ends up with someone else and gets a happy ending too.
As for Sanji’s interest in Nami I personally think Oda has paid a lot of attention to it in a way that makes it the most likely ship for Sanji. He might yet add moments between other ships and develop them (most notably San/Pu of course), but in my opinion the way Oda has added Nami in other potential romantic moments with Sanji it seems Nami is above every other woman so far.
Tumblr media
Most importantly I think we have seen:
Sanji leave Violet who actually seemed to show interest in him to run off to save Nami (and the crew, but the point is that Oda chose to highlight and add this moment with focus on Nami to begin with).
Sanji being more focused on Nami even when Vivi and Robin has been on the ship or at the same place. Oda definitely puts Sanji with Nami above other women at least in amount of moments and involvment.
Sanji being very concerned with Nami in front of Purin and being shown happy with her (the bridal carry for example) and saying he loves her right in front of Purin.
Sanji having stronger reactions to Nami than other women. This could just be my way of seeing it, but I do think we have seen the strongest reactions from Sanji when it comes to Nami. Not the least with turning into a literal devil when he heard she was kidnapped by Absalom. For example compare Sanji rushing after Nami in both Skypiea and Thriller Bark even to him going after Robin. Or his reaction to Nami getting sick in Drum. We simply have a lot of strong reactions from Sanji towards Nami in different ways and more importantly Oda seeming to add focus on them.
We also have him reacting to things like “women’s tears” or calls but only indicating Nami might be calling him personally. For example Sanji hearing Tashigi cry or saying he trusts Violet or Robin even though they are lying but for Nami adding things like “I think I heard Nami call out for me” or moments like “I leave my Nami to you”. Basically the way Oda writes it there often seems to be added a more personal stake in Sanji’s reactions and moments with Nami compared to with other women.
Tumblr media
So from Sanji’s point of view, and the way Oda has written them so far, I think he puts Nami above every other woman. But more importantly, Oda shows us moments between them that he doesn’t add for other ships as consistantly or in romantic looking ways. Keep in mind that both Nami and Sanji are main characters, but they are not Luffy. Oda choosing to not use Luffy (who will obviously have strong moments with all of his nakama, like how he had his own time with Sanji both in Baratie and WCI) for some of these moments but rather insert Sanji or Nami instead for each other’s stories makes it more relevant. Because it’s not an obvious choice in the same way. It’s a choice based on their characters and dynamics within the world, not because of their roles as main hero or heroine. Here are some examples.
1. Their first meeting. Sanji is for the first time seen in love cook mode and he basically seem ready to leave everything behind for Nami. Right away his reaction to Nami is stronger than what we have seen from him and it seems to hold true even with time.
Tumblr media
2. SaNa having interest and plot relevance to each other’s back stories. Sanji getting involved with hearing Nami’s back story and saving his sister.  Also, calling her “sister” which indicates a platonic familiarity where he puts Nami above Nojiko romantically (yes, despite flirting some with her). Nami in turn also getting involved and showing interest in Sanji’s backstory, pushing to go with Luffy to save Sanji and being the one to remind us of Sanji’s past and character traits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. Sanji getting personally tantalized by using Nami. This has happened several times, the first with Kuroobi in Arlong Park, but also with Mr. 2 in Alabasta, Absalom in Thriller Bark and then in Fishman Island (Zou too, but that wasn’t just Nami) and on Zou. You can check my post (thought not updated fully) Sanji and Nami – Fights and danger for a more detailed view. (Even in movies like Strong World Sanji has a direct talk with Shiki about Nami and it seems most people are aware of Sanji being extra sensitive to Nami.)
Tumblr media
4. Sanji asking Nami if she is jealous or if she loves him, indicating again that he is interested to know is she is interested in him. Once even responding “I love you too”. In general Nami responding in these situations in a more “positive way” or Oda showing Sanji interpreting her actions as more romantic. For example the “proposal” or the hug in WCI.
Tumblr media
5. Romantic looking moments or themes. Now this is of couse not something that has been done mutually between them and thus aren’t actually romantic scenes. But the tropes and common use for many of the things that Oda has chosen to use for Sanji and Nami are romantic in nature. Of course the two forced marriages are the strongest examples with them rescuing each other from getting married to someone else. But we also have the switch body trope, the slap and of course smaller gestures like the bridal carries or the way Oda drew the hug between them in WCI. I am not saying that SaNa is the only ship with romantic looking moments, because San/Pu And San/Violet obviously has some as well. However, considering the amount SaNa moments and the fact that he has left Violet and Purin in particular for Nami seems to make the SaNa moments trump any other ship. At least for me personally SaNa as it is now and as Oda has portrayed it in comparison to other Sanji ships gets in the way of Sanji ending up with someone else unless Oda starts to make some changes.
Tumblr media
I want to make some emphasis on how Nami and Sanji seem to get some “bigger” moments between them in almost every arc. Again, compare this to Sanji with other women, or even Nami with other crew members.
Baratie - Their first meeting and Sanji’s reaction to Nami and interest gets focus. Arlong Park - Sanji shows interest in Nami’s past and Kuroobi mocks Sanji by specfically mentioning Nami. ( Loguetown Arc, Reverse Mountain Arc, Whiskey Peak Arc and Little Garden mostly have small moments, like Sanji asking if Nami is jealous or Sanji giving Nami his jacket.) Drum Island - Nami is sick and we see Sanji worry and care for her and in the end even sacrificing himself for her. Nami worries about him too. Alabasta - Sanji fighting Mr. 2 looking like Nami and lots of small moments like Sanji asking Nami if she loves him.
Tumblr media
Jaya - Nami showing interest in Sanji’s back story. Small things like Nami hiding for the bugs behind Sanji or Sanji. Skypiea - Sanji being hell-bent of saving Nami and making the others look for her. Then him saving Nami and Usopp from Enel and Nami being worried in return. (Both times Sanji gets hit by Enel Nami is there and worries.) Then a lot of small moments like him giving her a flower and Nami pulling Sanji’s ear for flirting with Conis. Long Ring Long Land - Nami encourage Sanji be the ball and win, but mostly small moments like Sanji getting annoyed with Aokiji for flirting with Nami or him sitting next to her and trying to kiss her. Water 7 - Sanji leaving his love letter to Nami and Nami being worried for (and impressed with) Sanji. Enies Lobby - Sanji losing against a woman, Nami being understanding and then stepping in to basically revenge him. Also Sanji hearing it as Nami loving him and then him showing up to save Nami and Usopp from Jyabura.
Tumblr media
Post-Enies Lobby - Not much, but Sanji stepping in to make Nami and Zoro stop fighting and make Nami understand Zoro’s pov. Thriller Bark - Sanji just being extremely focused on Nami and worried about her throughout the whole arc. Also him getting specifically selected by Luffy to save Nami. Of course the wedding theme with the bridal carry and Sanji’s reaction to Nami. Also Sanji’s Zombie protecting Nami (and later kicking Robin) and his “obsession with Nami” being mentioned. Sabaody Archipelago - Another smaller arc, but we do get Nami worried about Sanji possibly drowning. And smaller moments like Sanji being angry for Nami being put in danger by the Fishman Riders or him telling Franky to take care of Nami as he runs to protect Zoro. When they return we of course also get the nosebleeds, and Sanji daydreaming about Nami’s development.
Tumblr media
Fishman Island - Sanji’s reaction to Jinbei and Arlong. Also the fishmen pointing out that Nami might be their weakness due to Sanji’s “over reaction“ to her falling. Punk Hazard - The body swtich, Sanji’s body saving Nami and Sanji being careful with not hurting her etc. Also them working together to save the children, Sanji listening to Nami’s request and saying he loves her more because of her kindness. Also small things like Sanji giving his jacket to Nami again. Dressrosa - Sanji leaving Violet behind to save Nami, insisting that he should be the one to save her and then him getting attacked by Doflamingo and Nami getting worried and not wanting to leave him. Sanji basically tries to sacrifice himself for Nami for the 4th time (Drum, Skypiea x2, also maybe in Thriller Bark). Zou - We get a lot of focus on Nami and Sanji together, and then of course when Sanji is gone Nami is the driving force for his plot. Once again Nami is also used to taunt Sanji (inside Capone). Then Nami is both the one to mention Sanji being from North Blue and to listen to Pekom’s talk about his family. Not to mention her insisting on going with Luffy to WCI and having a fight with Zoro as she defends Sanji. Whole Cake Island - The way she pushes for them to find Sanji, her hapiness when they find him and her hurt and the slap. We even get something like Nami being tantalized with Sanji by both Purin and Brulee. The only strawhat besides Luffy who gets a personal story thread with Sanji and a personal resolution for their conflict is Nami. The tension seems personal and combined with Sanji having another love interest but choosing Nami above her it does seem like Nami is the more natural choice both for Sanji and for Oda.
Tumblr media
There is also a distinct increase in romantic-looking moments between them, with them touching more than ever before.
Tumblr media
Wano - Even after WCI it doesn’t seem like Oda is stopping the SaNa moments. Sanji manages to save and carry Nami three times in the beginning of Wano. On top of that we have the bath scene and of course a lot of small moments and mentions between them like Sanji asking Usopp to take care of “My Nami-san” or Sanji jumping in abobe Nami to save her from arrows.
Tumblr media
How many times have we had Sanji be the one to go after Nami or save her? By his own choice, by being the one present or even by Luffy asking Sanji to go. Oda puts Sanji next to Nami a lot, and I think it’s possible he might be doing it for a reason.
Who knows what we might get, but the fact that we have as much as we do really seems to show Oda having a preference to put them together in various ways.
The point is they have a lot of time and moments dedicated to them from Oda despite them both being secondary characters. At this point it’s possible Sanji is the person Nami has moments with the most in the story besides Luffy (and perhaps Usopp) as they often end up together. Of course this is including them thinking about and talking about each other as well, and not just direct interacting. For example counting the body switch and Nami being worried and focused on Sanji while on Zou. Oda doesn’t have to, but he has chosen to write it like this. On top of that he adds romantic interest from Sanji and romantic looking moments between them.
I could go on, and there are plenty of moments and examples to find between Nami and Sanji that are interesting to look a bit deeper at. You can check out my Masterpost - SanjiAFsincedayone for some of them. But as it is now here are the main points for why I think SaNa at least has a bigger chance to happen than other ships with the two of them as it is now.
One-sided attraction and romantic interest from Sanji’s side that needs to be resolved in one way or another.
Nami seems special to Sanji. Even small things like only using -san for her and -chan for others is a detail that makes her stand out to him.
Great involvement in each other’s stories. Oda likes adding Sanji and Nami in moments together both for interaction and explenation about each other. For example Sanji is also often used to save Nami.
Interactions of understanding and changing dynamics between the two, like them compromising for each other or wanting to know about the other’s past. Matching personalities and a possible future.
Romantic themes and moments, mainly the weddings, but also the amount of times Sanji has saved Nami and things like the hug being drawn in a very romantic looking way with Nami being more focused on.
Tension and urgency. This is basically Sanji and Nami having a lot of focus on each other in dire situations and Oda showing it with specific mentions.
Tumblr media
So, to summarize, I like Sanji and Nami both as indvidual characters and together. I enjoy them as a ship and to explore their dynamics in a romantic way no matter what they might end up as in the story. Anyone should be able to respect that people have different preferences. Additionally I think and speculate that they would work well and could happen in the manga as well. This is obviously a biased interpretation and opinion.
I might be wrong, but you should be able to respect that too as we have yet to get anything objectivly confirming any ship. We don’t know if any ship with end up canon at all. Maybe Sanji and Nami will remain a ship that never becomes canon, but even so they are a ship that is definitely worth enjoying.
I hope you found this post interesting and can enjoy your own ship and fandom while also seeing that it’s ok for others to like something different than you. Thanks for reading.

The Gomez to your Morticia
Tumblr media
Halloween Prompt, Day 2: we don’t know each other but i came as (character A) and you came as (character B) and well, look at that, (character A/character B) is both of our otps…strange…we should do something about that….like make out
Sanji loved and hated parties.
He hated parties because they were loud and people were too drunk to appreciate his cooking.
He loved them because, well, there were plenty of beautiful women to feast his eyes own.
Normally, Sanji would be against holding a party in his lavish penthouse apartment but he couldn’t refuse Nami. Especially not when she batted those pretty little eyes up at him through her beautiful and curled eyelashes. Sanji was a weak man and women will be the death of him.
He may hate parties, though Sanji had to admit that he loved Halloween. He just became so creative with his cooking and baking skills that he didn’t know how to stop really. From haunted house cakes to eyeballs made from cookies and marshmallows, Sanji did them all.
Sanji had to admit hat when his friends came over to help him decorate his apartment while he prepared the vast sea of delicacies, his apartment turned into a gorgeous Halloween town that he was certain that his soccer mom neighbor from below would be jealous enough to kill someone to have her apartment like his.
“Woah, sorry!” A drunk man dressed as Hulk with cheap body paint apologized loudly after bumping into him and pouring whatever drink he was having all over his brand new suit.
Sanji just grumbled as he resisted the urge to pull out a cigarette and smoke it, he had to be a good host so smoking was not an option. He decided to instead gaze at the beautiful women that occupied his apartment. There was a naughty nurse who was giggling away while shamelessly staring at Zoro’s exposed arms (stupid moss head), a devil who was bopping for apples (so fucking hot) and countless other beauties that were barely dressed to keep them warm during this chilly October night.
Though, one party goer had grabbed his attention.
She was standing in the corner of the room, next to the buffet table. She anxiously rubbed her arms as her eyes nervously scanned her surroundings. She wore a long, tight black dress that reached all the way down to her feet which almost hid away her heels. Her black hair was long, reaching her waist, and was straightened to perfection. The woman had a pale shade of foundation on while her lips were coated in a sinful red color that glistened in temptation.
Now, Sanji wouldn’t typically go after a woman dressed like that but-
“We match.” Sanji decided to say as a form of introduction.
The woman jumped in surprise and turned to face him, her eyes trailing over what he was wearing. “We are.” She gave a broken laugh, probably due to her anxiety.
She’s cute. Thought Sanji to himself.
“So, no Gomez Addams?”
Apparently, that was the wrong (or right, depending on who’s asking) thing to ask as the woman heavily rolled her eyes and said, “I found out that my boyfriend was cheating on me a few days ago and we were supposed to go together. I didn’t want to come to this stupid party and look like an idiot, especially when I don’t know anyone, but Vivi insisted.” she huffed.
Sanji was certain he looked scandalized. What kind of idiot would cheat on such a lovely lady? And if that ex-boyfriend wanted an open relationship, he should’ve discussed it with his girlfriend like real men should have.
“I’m sorry.” Sanji then offered her a cheesy smile, “Guess I’ll be your Gomez Addams for the night!”
Sanji chuckled nervously at the deadpan expression he received from the woman dressed as Morticia Addams. “I’m sorry.” He apologized again but the woman just sighed.
“It’s fine. I’m just-” She gave a big exhale, “You know what, yeah, why don’t you be my Gomez for the night? If that asshole is having fun then why can’t I?”
Sanji beamed at the woman, ecstatic to have found a woman who would give him the time of day -err, night.
“I’m Sanji by the way.” He stretched his hand for handshake.
“Y/N.” She introduced herself and held his hand.
And instantly, sparks exploded like their own private show of fireworks. The attraction was instant and, they don’t know how, but the two found themselves kissing each other.
Oh my god, oh my god, OH MY GOD!
Sanji internally panicked as he closed his eyes at the way those sinfully plump lips moved against his.
And just as quickly as it started, it ended with Sanji forcing himself away from the woman by pushing at her shoulders, “You’re really a wonderful woman and God knows how much I want to kiss you but are you sure?” Sanji maybe a love crazed man but he always remembered that consent is very important.
“Sanji.” The woman cupped his cheek, thumb caressing the skin, “I want to kiss you just as much.” she replied and then leaned in to kiss him again.
This time, Sanji allowed it and truly allowed himself to get lost in the exhilarating sensation, tilted his head a little to the left to deepen the kiss.
The way her plump lips opened and closed in an open mouth peck sent a bolt of electricity all the way down to Sanji’s groin. He whimpered when he felt her tongue boldly pushed its way inside Sanji’s open mouth, making him go weak in the knees.
Sanji was surprised at the moan that managed to escape through his lips at the intrusion, rivaling all the pornstars he was a fan of. He made sure to keep his mouth open and allowed for Y/N to do whatever she pleased, wrecking his whole existence to her delight.
He could tell the telltale signs of the uncomfortable tightness between his legs as Y/N boldly bit on his lower lip and gently tugged at the soft flesh with her teeth before she let go. She then quickly leaned back in and continued to devour him. The kiss grew heavy, intense even. Sanji could feel his body boil with heat and he couldn’t control soft whimpers he emitted. And when she buried her fingers deep into his hair and gave a sharp tug, he almost came right then and there.
And when the kiss finally ended, Sanji found himself chasing after those precious lips, eager for more kisses.
“Down boy.” She smirked at him, hunger and desire in her eyes.
“Please.” Sanji breathed, “I-...” It was all too much and Sanji was on the brink of insanity
“Bedroom. Now.” She commanded and Sanji all too eagerly snatched her hand and lead her to his bedroom so she can have her way with him until he couldn’t remember his own name.

Anonymous asked:
do you like any of the one piece manga colorspreads? if yes, which ones?
(Apparently you cannot answer questions more than once which seems like a flaw. People can always change their mind.
Let's see, where did I leave off? Oh that's right. the Strawhats are a acid punk rock band now . So the obvious next step is...
Devil Fruit's Angels
Tumblr media
That's right, in this universe the Strawhats aren't marauders of the sea. They're marauders of the open road.
Look at this badass biker gang. And I'm not abbreviating for motorcycles. Luffy heard there were such a thing as a biker gang and took it very literally. Best of all, he got eight people to go along with this.
Eventually, he accidentally tore the bottom wheel rim from his bike, the Going Merry, but then they met Franky and since he was unaware of Luffy's stupidity innocence at this time, he built him an actual damn motorcycle. Zoro painted the sidecar to look like a shark (okay technically Usopp did the painting and Zoro bitched about it but he loves it if anyone scratches that paint job they immediately find themselves with their blades in their face). He just lays there, sleeping, sometimes doing weights while letting Luffy drive a fucking motorcycle.
Love that Nami weighed up her choices and her and Robin decide to ride with Usopp. Let's face it, he is easily the most responsible rider. Well, that's why Nami choose him. Chopper has two designated seats: Usopp's basket and Zoro's lap. So of course Robin has to sit where she can see Chopper.
Also, LOOK HOW FUCKING CUTE CHOPPER IS IN A BASKET.
Brook seems to be riding a penny farthing which is pretty amazing. He probably just had one in his garage from his youth. Sanji has wisely decided to ride backwards bitchseat so that smoke doesn't fly back in his own face. I am unable to see what Franky is driving. I assume his bottom half turns into a motorcycle. I mean why not?
The Strawhat Gang does pretty much the exact same shit they do as Pirates. I mean, Luffy even falls into water just as often. How? It's Luffy that's how.
Law's little group of anarchist ride around in a yellow Volkswagen Beetle. Fight me.
Winter Wonder Island
Tumblr media
IS THAT PENGUIN WEARING ZORO'S HARAMAKI? HOW DID HE GET IT? DIES ZORO KNOW? DID HE GIVE OT TO HIM? DID ZORO THINK THE PENGUIN'S BELLY MIGHT BE COLD?
I love Nami and Chopper playing, though Chopper looks less pleased. Plus the polar bear and Luffy are just the same person/bear. And nothing can convince me Robin isn't currently getting a back massage by a walrus. That is how my bitch roles.
The Straw Helmets
Tumblr media
And we're back to the AUs.
Total honesty time: I picked this less put of love (though I enjoy most the AU ones) and more to annoy a friend.. See, I know many a Norwegian. They are a super nice country, you guys.
Who get super pissed at popular depictions of Vikings. Which are wrong.
And yet this particular reimagining is so wrong it's like gone full circle. I mean it's still nowhere near accurate but damn is it awesome. Are they riding walruses? Oda knows the Vikings had horses, right? And reindeer?
And yet he's gone with the well known domestic walrus. Huh. It's a choice.
Honestly, Franky and Usopp's costumes look more gladiator than Viking (also, I know you are a pervert Franky, but you literally gonna die of hypothermia.) Chopper is apparently one of those famous Japaness Vikings based on his costume design while Luffy is wearing something I can 100% imagine Doflamingo owned at some point. And Zoro....
Well, there is a reason I have a tag called Zoro's sense of direction and/or fashion. Look at that thing. That is a mess. I love it.
Get Wet
Tumblr media
Nami, babe, me, Brook, Sanji, and apparently Robin a appreciate how sexy you're being right now.
But all I see is Zoro's damn fine back with water forming little riblets around his muscles. Also, love the boy's smile as he watches Luffy. He totally knows what's about to go down and thinks it's fucking hilarious.
They Call It The Grand Line
Tumblr media
Every member of the coward trio (plus guest member Brook) is freaking the fuck out and I love it. Chopper and Nami are cling to one another, Brook's soul has left his body, and I'm pretty certain Usopp has half climbed into the seat in front of him to grab Zoro. Which I cannot blame him for.
Meanwhile, Robin is watching this whole spectacle with mild amusement, Sanji is straight up grilling... While on the back of a rollar coaster, Franky is chowing down on some of that food and Zoro... Zoro is getting drunk. On a rollar coaster.
The only one who seems to be having any fun is Luffy, sitting, of course, on his special seat. Look at that kid, he's having a blast. Well now we know how all the other Strawhats ended up here.
A Game Of Chicken
Tumblr media
There's a lot I could say about this picture, but all I'm going to say is this: Zoro is clearly riding a weird ass chocobo.
What else can beat that?
Pirate Olympics: Where Everyone Is Winner Wanted Man
Tumblr media
Oh, look, it's another AU one!
Look, over all, everyone has a sport that is either well suited to them (except maybe Brook. I mean soccer? Really? Not, like short distance sprinting since he's the fastest strawhat or fencing? If it were winter he could participate in the skeleton - yohohoho!).
Let's just amire Zoro playing baseball THREE BAT STYLE. LIke a goddamn boss.
You Know What's Awesome? Drugs.
Tumblr media
It doesn't even matter what's going on in this one, it's goddamn beautiful.
Just Another Sunny Day
Tumblr media
[You know when I said I haven't read the manga yet? Well, also terrible with visual images - the world should be in words in my opinion. So this, it turns out, is not a colorspread but fanart by the very talented Frayten who I deeply apologize to for not crediting earlier. I'm keeping it though, because it's amazing art, it's been reblogged and at least now it's properly credit on the main post. Many thanks to @blueriza to for being a better fan than I am.]
I really enjoy this little switch up. I want to believe it isn't just Law fucking with them but they've all inhaled some kind of mind switching pollen of something. So one day Law just came out to find Robin making breakfast and heart eyes at all the men, Sanji eating nothing but meet and bouncing around like he was made of rubber, Franky trying to play the violin, Chopper taling wild stories about when he was captain, Usopp training for a couple hours before passing out, Brook worrying over everyone's health, Nami striking posed while talking about how SUPER it all is, and Luffy, for once in his life, perfectly calm as he sits there reading.
That would be hilarious but, yeah, obviously it was Law. Look at how Nami Zoro is threatening him. She know exactly who pulled this shit. And look at Law's smug little smirk.
Hey, you suppose Law flirted with Nami Zoro? I know it's Nami but she's still got Zoro's abs and ass. Just throwing that out there.

Happiness (Sanji x Reader)
Tumblr media
“ If it’s for his happiness, I don’t see why not”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*This is after the whole cake island, just imagine they’re all together hehe  *
You guys were docked on an island, it was small but very lively. Surprisingly, everyone on that island was very fond of pirates. Some were even fans of the Strawhats, admiring their courage to stand up for their beliefs. The crew decided to go for some drinks, there merrymaking was made. People enjoyed the company you pirates had to offer. Zoro and Nami were on their fourth glasses already. Then one of the people at the bar opened up a topic;
“Have you pirates heard of the famous Old Lady Nao?”
People started whispering
Luffy, innocently said “Who is that? Does she give out free food?”
Many laughed at his statement, “Kind of like that” said a drunk man. Old Lady Nao lives in the forest of this island. Many say that she can see the kindness of your soul. She’ll ask you what you wish for, and if she sees that you’re worthy she will grant it”.
“Sounds interesting,” said Robin “I’d like to see her for myself”
“Hey, If I’m worthy she can give me tons and tons of meat, right?” Luffy said excitedly.
“Luffy, how can we load the ship with tons of meat? We already have enough supplies” Nami says with a sigh.
“It wouldn’t hurt to see for ourselves,” Usopp interjects. “We can defend ourselves if anything goes wrong”.
It was settled, the crew made their way through the forest with the help of the people at the bar. As the leaves on the forest floor crinkled your heartbeat was increasing. You were quite nervous, there are countless of this you wanted, how could pick just one? The smell of cigarettes broke your train of thought. To your right, Sanji was smoking with a tired look on his face. Being the concerned person you are you asked him, “Hey, are you okay?”
He gave you a small smile, “Yeah, just thinking about the recent events”.
It made sense, the Whole Cake Island must’ve tired him out, physically and mentally. You pat him on the back, “Cheer up, maybe when we see this Old Lady Nao, you can ask her for peace of mind” You say with a cheerful smile. He smiles back at you and continues to walk by your side. Sanji was someone you admired, someone you cared deeply for, someone you loved. Only a few people know about your love for the blonde-haired cook. You didn’t want to have a sense of awkwardness between you in the preface that he knew. Nami, Zoro, and Robin swore to not tell anyone. But they knew how hard the WHI thing was for you. It broke your heart seeing Sanji getting his heart broken. You even cried for an hour when you say how Pudding kissed Sanji, even though he doesn’t remember.
“We’re here!” Luffy exclaimed. What you saw was a small little house that had a little lamp hanging above the door. “It looks adorable,” said Chopper.
You took some courage and knocked on the door, the door creeks, and an old voice says “Come in” Old Lady Nao was sitting on a chair looking at the window, gazing upon the moon. “So, to whom must I owe the pleasure of having the infamous Strawhats at my humble abode,” she says in a kind and gentle voice. Luffy, excited “They told us that you grant wishes!” while Nao just smiles at him “Yes, I do. But only if your soul is kind enough,” she turns to look at you and the crew, “If you would like to see if your soul is kind enough, I will tell you. But one at a time, please. Everyone else, kindly go outside” And you do so, Luffy went inside first. Then Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Chopper, Franky, Robin, and then Brook. All of them leaving the house with different emotions.
Brook leaves, approaching you and telling you to step inside. You open the door and Old Lady Nao smiles at you, “Hello deary,” she says and urges you to sit in front of her. The floorboards squeak as you approach her. You smile and say, “Old Lady Nao--” she interjects and says, “Your soul is beautiful my dear, I can see so much compassion, love, and bravery in that soul of yours”, you blush. “T-thank you,”
“So what do you wish for?” she asks with a smile. You think for a second, what does your heart desire? Over Old Lady Nao’s shoulder, you can see Sanji, he’s in the distance, smoking with his head tilted towards the sky in deep thought.  At that moment you made up your mind,
“Old Lady Nao, I want Sanji’s Happiness,” you say with a smile.
She asks, “Why so? Don’t you wish for him to fall in love with you?”
Shocked you ask, “How did you know?”
“ I sense the admiration you have for him, It’s quite lovely honestly”
“Well, since you’re the only one who can hear,” you pause and put on a smile
“I do, I love him with my whole heart. He is my sun, my reminder that after everything, there is a new day. It sounds cheesy but, people often ask ‘how do you look at someone and decide that they’re your everything?’ then I look at Sanji and say, ‘I don’t know, but when I look at him, every fiber of my being says that it’s him. Yesterday, today, tomorrow and forever. At the end of each day and at the rising of each sun, I’ll always choose him.’ His smile that I oh so love? All I want is for that to stay forever, even if he finds happiness with someone else” you pause for breath,
“He’s quirky, lovable, and sweet. He makes sure I’m happy, even if it’s not in a romantic way. Sanji never leaves me out in a conversation, when I talk in a group some people don’t pay attention to me, then I look at him and he’s looking at me with a smile. Its as if he’s saying “Go on, I’m listening.” you say.
Old Lady Nao is astonished, she holds your hand and says “What you wished for, will be granted.” You hug her and say goodbye. When you leave she says, “ You can come in know, stop listening beside the window.”
Sanji’s cigarette drops in shock and he chuckles. He was eavesdropping on the conversation by accident, but he couldn’t be happier. He was ecstatic, knowing the person he loved the most, loved him back. Old Lady Nao smiles at your retreating figure. Little did you know, that Sanji’s happiness which you wished for, started with you.
Video calls in quarentine
Plot: The worst thing about not being able to leave the house was boredom and not seeing his friends or Law. Luckily there are video calls and until the quarantine ends, Luffy would talk to them through the camera.
Video calls in quarentine
Luffy opened the bowl of ramen as he sat at the desk in front of the computer. Ace hadn't felt like cooking that night and ordered delivery at Sanji’s restaurant, which was one of the few things that was still working. Also, they didn't have much food in the house anymore. The next day Sabo would go out with the car to buy food at the market that could last them for the whole next week.
His room was a mess. Ace forced him to clean every day, but he just swept up and let Sabo disinfect. His clothes and things were thrown everywhere, but he didn't care much. He crossed his legs over the chair and looked at the computer anxiously. He wanted it to be time for everyone to get online. He was terribly bored and fed up with being locked in his house without being able to leave, and talking to them was one of the few fun things he could still do. That if the internet didn't collapse with everyone using it at the same time.
"Luffy, are you eating already?" Ace asked, peering into his room.
"Yes, I just grabbed the ramen," he replied, turning his face to see him. He brought a mouthful of noodles to his mouth. "I added the meat you had made today at noon to make it better"
Ace laughed because he knew of his little brother's quirky taste for meat.
"We’re going to talk to Marco, Thatch, Koala and Hack by video call in the living room," he informed him, saying goodbye.
"Okay, I'm going to talk to the guys, too."
The ringing of the video call application turned his attention to the computer and he saw that Franky had started the chat. He accepted the invitation and eight boxes appeared on his screen. The faces of his friends appeared one by one.
"Hello guys!" Luffy yelled happily. He waved his hand effusively to greet them.
"Luffy!" Chopper appeared in one of the upper boxes and Luffy watched him. "How's everybody?"
"Eating,"  he laughed, showing him his bowl of ramen.
"Ace didn't cook today?" Sanji interjected, under Chopper.
"We don't have much food left, tomorrow Sabo is going to buy. I hope he brings a lot of meat"
"He doesn’t need to go outside, Luffy," said Nami, next to Chopper. "He can buy online and have it delivered to the house"
"I didn't know that," Chopper replied in amazement. "However here at home they go out every day, so they buy outside"
"Do your parents have a lot of work, Chopper?" Robin asked, sitting next to Franky in their living room. Their camera appeared below Sanji.
"Yes, they are both in the emergency department at the hospital, so they attended many suspicious cases that ended up negative, and several that were confirmed"
Chopper's parents were a pair of doctors, Kureha and Hiluluk. Chopper was a student, but he still didn't work or practice in hospitals, so he had to stay home during quarantine.
"What about you?" Nami asked Franky and Robin. "Classes were suspended, do you have to go to college, Robin?"
"I went the first week just because the teachers had to go, but since the mandatory quarantine was decreted we also stayed at home. And Franky opens the workshop less hours"
Franky's workshop was installed next to their house and he didn't have to go out to work. In addition, hardware stores and workshops were exempt from quarantine because citizens may need home repairs.
"At least there are some things to do," Franky said." Otherwise it would be suuuper boring"
Luffy laughed as he shoved a large bite of noodles and meat into his mouth. Knowing that he wasn't the only one who was bored to death during those days made him feel very accompanied.
"What about you, Sanji?" Robin asked. "The other day I passed near the restaurant when I was returning from shopping and I saw it closed, how are you doing?"
Sanji was sitting in a chair by the open window of his room, smoking. He looked at the computer, which appeared to be leaning against his bed since the camera focused him from beneath.
"Zeff decided to close the shop to eat there, but the delivery is still open" he answered taking a drag on the cigarette.
"Today we ordered the ramen there, it’s delicious!" Luffy added, his eyes bright with excitement.
"I didn't work today, who brought you the food?"
"Paty came, it looked like they had a lot of work," Luffy replied.
"With the quarantine, people in the neighborhood are asking for more food there whenever they don't want to cook. We are cooking a lot even though we closed the restaurant"
The box next to Sanji was black and suddenly Zoro appeared.
"Finally!" Usopp shouted when he saw him appear. "Why did you take so long? Don't tell me you got lost ..."
Everyone laughed at the absurd joke and Zoro shouted some things at him that no one heard. The video call was more chaotic than their meetings, although they were naturally messy already.
"I was sleeping," he said to apologize.
"How strange of you, sleeping," Sanji murmured to annoy him.
"What are you saying, perverted cook ?!" He yelled annoyed.
"Brook didn't show up yet, either," Chopper added. His box, next to Robin’s and Franky's, underneath it all, was still black.
"I'm sure he's sleeping, surely he's going to show up anytime soon," Robin replied, smiling.
"Hey, Zoro!" Luffy called out to him. "How’s everything over there? Did you close the dojo?"
Zoro's father, Mihawk, was a well-known martial artist from the area and had a kendo dojo in which Zoro gave some classes and trained. They lived in the house behind the dojo, in an area far from the city, surrounded by some valleys.
Zoro said he used to get lost when everyone got together because he lived further away than the others. Sanji believed it was because he had a lousy sense of direction. And that always led to absurd and fun fights.
"It's closed, but we train every day," Zoro commented, settling into bed with the computer on his legs. "Although it's boring not being able to get out of here"
"I get you," Luffy gasped with a weary expression. "I'm sick of being locked up at home! I go out to the yard and I have nothing to do. Sabo won't even let me go do the groceries!
"He knows you're going to run away if you go out," Usopp said, and Nami nodded.
"It's just for a few days Luffy, we don't want you to get sick!" She exclaimed to reaffirm the point.
"I know, but it's sooo boring!" Luffy dropped his head on the desk table and his friends laughed, understanding his sentiment, because they were all mortally bored from being locked up. "If the virus doesn't kill me, boredom will"
"I go out to the yard every day to practice my marksmanship, at least I have my equipment at home," Usopp said. "I brought it from the club before quarantine"
He practiced shooting and arrow and various other aiming sports, but he was lucky because in Usopp's house there was a big yard where he could spend the day if he was tired of being indoors.
"At home we don't know what else to do," Nami said, rolling her eyes. "Being locked up in an apartment is much worse. Yesterday we walked the dog with Nojiko and took a few more laps"
"See! I'm not the only one!" Luffy yelled at the screen.
"Nami, don't do that please!" Chopper interjected. "It is better to take him out to pee and nothing else, even if you want to walk a little. It is dangerous to expose yourself"
"I know, I'm sorry… today we purchased some clothes online! They will send them home, so at least that was fun.
Underneath them all, Brook's black box formed into an image. The man was lying on the couch at home drinking tea and the computer seemed to be on his legs.
"Hello Brook!" Usopp greeted him, waving his hand effusively.
Brook saluted even though he wasn't looking at the camera.
"On the top of the notebook, Brook!" He indicated, laughing. Usopp gave him some classes to use the computer a few years ago and now he knew much better how it worked but he had never made video calls with it yet.
"Oh, there you are," said the older man, and he started laughing when he saw them all. "How are you guys?"
"Hello, Brook," Robin said with her kind smile. "We are fine, you?"
"Suuuuper bored over here," Franky added.
"I am grand," Brook replied, drinking his tea. "I am an average retiree, this was already my lifestyle"
Everyone laughed at his joke and Luffy saw behind Brook his guitar.
"Have you been practicing with the guitar?" He asked excitedly.
"Today I wanted to play something for you guys, if you let me."
"Yes!" Luffy yelled excitedly.
Brook was the older of the group, and therefore the most vulnerable to the disease, so he was confined to his home. Usopp lived close enough and did the groceries for him. He couldn't stay long, so he left the food at the door, greeted each other and left.
"By the way, thank you for today’s groceries, Usopp-san," he said with a smile and picked up his guitar.
The man might be old, but he was rocking like no other. In his youth he had been part of a band that became fairly well known. Franky had been a huge fan in his teens and had the entire Roringustonzu discography. Sabo also liked them so Luffy knew some songs, but Brook had done others that no one else knew.
He played the song everyone liked best, Bink’s Sake, an ode to the adventures they had created after a movie night at Franky’s and Robin's. They had seen Pirates of the Caribbean and fantasized about being pirates until the wee hours. Their version ended up being much better than the movie.
Everyone applauded when he finished playing. They had sung in chorus, which with the delay came late to all the computers and made a mess of sound that made the moment even more delirious and fun. Brook bowed and laughed with them.
"Hey, Brook!" Sanji called out as he smoked. "How’s Laboom?"
Brook got up from his seat and took the computer to the fish tank in a corner of the house, where the little goldfish he had had for years danced to the tune he had just finished.
"Here he is, his food comes by online delivery, so he is kept fed," he replied.
Luffy greeted Laboom as if the fish could hear or recognize him, but everyone else did too.
"What about your dog, Luffy?" Chopper asked, poking his nose very close to the screen.
"Get a little further from the computer, Chopper," Zoro warned him. The boy pushed away the computer.
"Sorry, my books had fallen and I was arranging them."
Luffy lifted his pet off the ground and brought it closer to the screen.
"Say hello, Shushu." The dog barked at the camera and everyone interpreted it as a greeting. "I think he is the only one who has a good time because nobody leaves the house"
"Same thing happens to me," Nami said with a smile.
The noise of a door was heard but they could not identify which camera it came from, until Perona appeared in Zoro's camera, behind everything, peeking out of the frame of the room.
"Food’s ready!" She yelled in her bossy tone. Sanji straightened up and began to greet her effusively.
"Hello, Perona-chan!" He shouted with bright eyes and Zoro glanced at him with a murderous face. "Do you want me to send you free food from the restaurant?"
Nami covered her face with shame. Luckily Sanji had understood, at least, that he couldn't flirt with her and Robin, because they were his friends, but that didn't stop him from going after Zoro's sister.
"That would be great!" Perona cried contentedly in her high-pitched voice, and Zoro shoved her out of her room.
"I'll go, now get out," he snapped annoyed.
Luffy laughed because the antics of his two friends always made him laugh. In the corner of his computer, a WhatsApp Web sign popped out. It was a message from Law.
[3/28 8:46 p. m.] Torao: Hello Luffy-ya
are you free?
"Torao wrote to me!" Luffy shouted happily with the cell phone in his hand and showed them to his friends.
"Send him greetings!" Nami shouted.
"Tell him to call me later," Chopper added. "I have a bunch of things to ask him"
Law was Chopper's tutor at the university, but when classes were suspended, so were face-to-face meetings with tutors and study sessions in the library. Everything had turned towards virtual meetings. However, in a complicated pandemic situation like this, and Law as a doctor, he had a lot of work in the hospital and could not pay as much attention to his little student.
"Okay, I think he wants to make a video call with me."
"Don't let things get too heated, Luffy!" Nami raised her eyebrows and started laughing out loud. Robin covered her mouth, giggling.
"Be careful, you live with your brothers!" Franky said very seriously.
Luffy felt his face going red because of his friends’ teasing, but he looked at the cell phone hoping that Law would write to him again. He had told him that he was there and that if he wanted to talk, his computer was on.
Instead of an answer, a video call notification came through.
"He’s calling me!" He announced happily. "Okay, guys, we’ll chat later, okay?"
His friends greeted him and said goodbye to him. Luffy closed that session and opened Law's video call. The screen showed the doctor in a huge box. He was in his apartment, surely he had just returned from work, although due to his clothes, he had already changed.
"Torao!" Luffy yelled happily. They hadn't seen each other in person in weeks. Law worked a lot in the hospital and even before the quarantine began he didn't want Luffy to see him in case he could infect him.
"How are you Luffy-ya?" He asked with a smile. That kind of sideways, very soft smile that Law only gave when he was relaxed and calm.
"Fine, bored, but I just talked to the guys and it was fun seeing them," he replied with a smile. "How about you? Have you just arrived from work?"
"Yes, I showered and left the clothes on the balcony with disinfectant. Today was a long day at the hospital."
"Why? Many new cases?" He asked curiously. "I hope you are taking care of yourself!"
Law laughed and the sound of his deep voice was refreshing. There were days when he was so stuffed with work that they couldn't even call each other. Luffy missed him very much.
“We confirmed five cases at North Blue"
Luffy saw him move around the house, it seemed that he had called him from his cell phone. Law sat at the kitchen counter and began to drink coffee.
"Shachi took care of two and I saw only one," he continued informing him. All of Law's friends were from the hospital, so he got to see them often.
Luffy envied that, at least a little.
"The ones we took care of are young and have no previous illnesses, so they will be fine. I investigated the other two cases and they are more complicated, but my prognosis is not bad. They were taken to Dressrosa’s hospital, which was built for patients with the virus specifically."
Luffy liked to hear Law speak, even though he didn't understand half the things he was saying. He knew that Law was a fairly prestigious doctor and that he was running for the position of North Blue’s director . Luffy wasn't sure if he wanted Law to have such an important position, because it would mean even less time than what he already had, but it would also get him out of that front line in which he was so exposed to the virus at the moment.
But he knew that, in the end, Law would do whatever he wanted and considered best. Luffy would do the same in his position.
"Do you wear the facial mask and the gloves?"
"We always wear them, Luffy-ya."
He laughed at his answer, because it was true. However, he was surprised to see his face so red around the eyes and with some injuries and irritated areas.
"Why are you so hurt?" He asked with a frown. He focused his eyes better.
Law touched his face and looked into his camera.
"Because of the use of the equipment," he replied, massaging his face. "The masks are tight and cover the entire face. In addition we have the face masks and the whole suit. Using them so much irritates the skin"
Luffy clicked his tongue, because he didn't like seeing him hurt, but he understood that it was needed to take care of himself too.
"Does it hurt much?"
Law shook his head and took a sip of his coffee.
"No, it just burns a little. I'll put on some moisturizer later. Don't worry, it's nothing"
He had seen Law many times when he was working, before the pandemic. Luffy liked to pick him up at the hospital and go eat somewhere. Sometimes he passed Law's friends and greeted each other. Luffy liked them very much.
He missed that.
"Don't be sad," he heard him say. He raised his head to see the screen. Law was really good at reading him, mainly because he knew him very well. Just as Luffy had managed to break him apart and know all of his reactions. "I am not the most optimistic of all, you know that, but I am confident that we will get out of this situation. The isolation is temporary, remember it"
Luffy complained as always, jaded just like a whimsical child.
"I'm very tired of being home", he groaned. " I wanna see my friends, go play soccer, see you. It's not fair"
Law looked at him with a warmer smile. It wasn't a common sight, but Luffy liked when he got to see it, though it usually meant that he was sad and Law did it to cheer him up.
"No, it isn't," he agreed. "It isn't, especially, for those who get sick or for those who cannot see their loved ones who are sick"
Law always helped him get everything in perspective. If he thought it that way, Law was right. He didn't know what he would do if any of his friends, brothers or Law became ill.
"I know, you're right, but Sabo won't even let me go get the groceries!" He protested.
"He knows you would go too far if he let you out," he replied, laughing.
"Why can't I stay with you during the quarantine?" He said with a whimsical pout.
"Because I work and I already put myself at risk, I don't want to risk you too."
He knew it. It made sense. But it was difficult to stay still locked up in his house when his nature was so free and adventurous.
"I miss you too, Luffy-ya," he said quietly, looking directly at him on camera. "I don't work early tomorrow so we can talk till late. Want to see a movie?"
He felt like a child when Law spoke to him like that, but he also liked him thinking of things to do with him.
"Okay, we can use Netflix Party," Luffy added. "It’s the extension that I told you about the other day, to watch Netflix at the same time. We used it with the guys the other day to watch the last movie of Pirates of the Caribbean."
"Okay, I’ll install it, what do you want to watch?""
"Not Grey's Anatomy, please," Luffy asked, rolling his eyes. "I don’t understand anything..."
"Okay, not series. A movie? An anime?"
Luffy went through the Netflix catalog looking at what they could see. Action movies, some interesting series, and anime.
"Zoro recommended Kingdom, the South Korean series. Usopp is watching Dr. Stone, maybe you like that, he's a scientist like you, Torao!"
Law laughed from the other side of the camera and put on the headphones to hear Luffy better.
"We can also see Kimetsu no Yaiba…"
"Shachi told me it's not that good," Law said.
Luffy looked back at the camera and saw his boyfriend on the couch with headphones and a blanket. He really wanted to be there, in that same tiny space. Cuddling.
"Kingdom sounds fine to me, but it's a series, doesn't bother you?" " Law asked.
Luffy wasn’t a series lover because he didn't have much perseverance to watch them. If he got bored in a chapter, he generally didn't watch more or forgot to follow it. But Zoro told him that ‘Kingdom’ had a lot of action and that he would surely like it.
"We’ll give it a try and see if we like it."
"Okay," Law replied. "I already have the extension, so we can see it whenever you want."
Luffy looked in his closet for a snack bag that he kept there for these moments and moved to bed with the computer.
"You look good like that, Torao," he praised him with an insinuating smile and Law felt a little nervous.
He wasn't used to Luffy's advances on him, no matter how much he always did it. He coughed and settled into the couch.
"If you go stray, we're not going to watch the series ..." he warned when his voice returned.
Luffy laughed as if he had made a prank. He opened the app and the series to play at the same time and put on the headphones.
"What's wrong with it?" He asked innocently. "You said we could stay up late."
Law put play before Luffy made him feel more embarrassed and started the series.
That night they went to bed at three in the morning. It was customary for Luffy to fall asleep late and more in quarantine when he had nothing to do. He made Law promise that they would speak the next day when he returned. Now that he couldn't see him, like his friends, he wanted to make a video call even more often with him.
When the pandemic passes, Luffy will take care of filling his schedule visiting all his friends, playing soccer and sleeping a lot with Torao on his couch; where they were tight and uncomfortable, but very close. So that it never occurs to any fucking virus to want to separate them.
Respond: Is Sanji a pervert?
In reference to/inspired by [x] @cruising-on-pirate-dreams
Tumblr media
It’s always been an interesting topic to see how people interpret Sanji’s character, in general. Usually, if he is not liked in fandom, he is seen as a hardcore pervert who thinks nothing more than that and all the arguments are based on his will to peep women and his nose bleedings. Then, there are other thoughts, that consider that his ero- kappa side is partly an exaggerated gag made by Oda-sensei.
Ever since the beginning, it's been fun to ponder the reasons behind the characters’ behavior and Sanji is not an exception. Actually, he was one of the characters I didn’t completely like in the beginning, because back then, during the elementary school, it was hard to understand why would someone fall in love with (almost) every lady they meet. Then slowly his characteristic started to open more to my blind eyes and the more I saw the soft side of Sanji and how much he puts effort on his friends, the more reasonable it was to see why he is so popular among fans. It seems like the hate he gets is mostly because people pay attention to his lust-side and examine it only from one point of view.
Tumblr media
There was a very interesting analyze written by @cruising-on-pirate-dreams about Sanji’s personality and tendency to be called pervert. In comparison, the fellow fan used Absalom and there were good points to be lifted up:
Absalom without a shame used his devil fruit skills to lurk on both Nami and Robin and never gave a rat’s eye whether Nami or Robin liked his forceful style to approach them. Both of them were clear objects to him that he licked and touched without permission, he even said openly that he likes Nami more because she is weaker in his eyes and later he kidnapped her and made her unconscious so he could marry her by force.
Sanji has a tendency to put himself into the submissive position, especially when it comes down to interacting with women. Yes, of course, he has this “I need lady~!”-kind of side but it’s remarkable how the more familiar/closer the woman is, the more submissive he actually is, in other words, he never puts himself above the ladies, especially when it comes down to interacting with Nami and Robin.
Tumblr media
Before the Whole Cake Island arc was published, I’ve written in Reasons to love Mugiwaras - Sanji - post that I actually do believe that despite the reputation and what he gives out of himself in public (being tough and ladies man), deep inside he is actually very broken and vulnerable and once more of his past was revealed after the time skip, the more sense all the headcanons and speculations started to become logical.
Tumblr media
The flashbacks in the Baratie arc showed that he was on edge of dying after the shipwreck which gave a little pieces of information about him but after the Germa66 and Sanji’s links into it were revealed, it was even more clear that he indeed had a terrible and traumatic childhood and suffered from great amounts neglection and abuse by his biological family until he escaped. The new supplement/update of the background story finally gave a further and more detailed explanation of why Sanji doesn’t see self-worth in himself and always puts others in front of him. He has put himself under the target line for his nakamas many times without caring how his own life and his dreams of finding All Blue would be thrown into waste if the worst-case scenario happened.
Tumblr media
Thankfully, there was someone from the family standing by his side and therefore Sanji grew very close to his mother. Unfortunately, she passed away early due to the illness (that actually protected Sanji to become an emotionless killing machine like his brothers) and then he was again left all alone in his personal hell.  Sora’s death might’ve left a certain gap in his heart. Perhaps the reason he treats women kindly (especially the ones he really adores) has roots in Sora’s way to support Sanji and maybe inside his core, he decided to continue sharing her mother’s legacy of kindness. He might appear like a tough guy who swears like a sailor but only the fact that he has saved an enemy from starvation tells that Sanji truly has a heart of gold, just like Sora.
Tumblr media
It’s highly likely that behind the scenes and below the surface,  Sanji could be actually looking for similar acceptance and unconditional love he got from his mother. But why then do all that ero-kappa stuff and womanizing when being around women? Mainly I still believe that it’s a continuous character gag just like Zoro’s poor sense of direction or Nami’s greediness but somehow it feels that there might be logical reasons behind this behavior.
Of course, it’s easy to interpret and only think that he is just a lustful pervert from the fact that his locker is full of girl magazines and that especially during the crew’s reunion after the time skip when it felt like Sanji couldn’t control himself with his nose bleedings.
Tumblr media
However, if one takes a look to past 20 years One Piece has existed, it’s remarkable to see how much Sanji actually does pay respect to women, especially towards his crewmates. He doesn’t only give compliments on their appearance (i.e how cute they look) or use polite suffixes (”chan” and “san”) while communicating with them, he also praises openly and sincerely their skills and how strong they are. So, it’s obvious that Sanji definitely sees more than just their bodies.
Tumblr media
Then to body swap, what @cruising-on-pirate-dreams wrote as well in another post. It’s easy to be seen that Sanji was happy that Law happened to swap his and Nami’s bodies and yes, he took peeks and adored the body features. However, because of this ero kappa-gag, one perspective is easily being left out of the spotlights (if readers didn’t pay enough attention): He did take good care of Nami’s body and he was aware how his actions can affect on her body and reflected on them many times. He smoked in her body but felt bad for doing that. Now it could be easily argued: “If he cares about Nami, why did he smoke in the first place?” but the answer is simple, he is a chain smoker and besides, Nami herself did give him the permission and the cigarettes in Punk Hazard.
Tumblr media
Well, despite Nami’s warnings, he did take her jacket away when she wasn’t looking but he had a good reason (Kinemon’s torso was underwater and he happened to be the best swimmer out of the options) and besides, he apologized, just like he apologized for harming her lungs with his cigarettes. He also kept constantly worrying whether the diving would be too much for Nami’s body under the circumstances.
So, if Sanji really does only see Nami as a sexual object he wouldn't have feel an urge to apologize for things he did when their bodies were swapped. If she’d only matter to him for lustful reasons and for good looks, he could have taken the advantange on her by taking everything away and do more exploring (if he was alone) but he didn’t because obviously, they were busy solving the mess Caesar made but mostly, (putting aside the comedy-reasons) he knows that going further would have been way too disrespectful and would have violated their nakamaship (and would be against the fact that he has protected her purity back in Thriller Bark and tried to avoid to stain her) especially if he later got caught somehow and it would anyway make no sense if he wanted to hurt her in any way intentionally.
Tumblr media
So, at least for me especially Punk Hazard was an arc that proved that despite the comedy, Robin and Nami are clearly not objects for Sanji and although he surely has felt some lust towards them, he respects the boundaries treats them well and speaks with much softer tones to them and even uses certain suffixes while addressing them.
Someone asked the reasons behind the suffixes and whether there are any deeper meanings  Oda’s response was that he was basically inspired by his older staff members who wanted to be treated as they were younger. Zeff taught Sanji chivalry and perhaps this detail of the story was really based on Oda’s real life.
Tumblr media
Back to the previous topic, why is Sanji portrayed as a pervert? Well, mainly for sure to make balance with comics on heavy storylines and because being interest in opposite-sex openly seems to be part of who he is but then thinking below the surface, what if those wild nosebleeds and dreams about peeping women are all actually just a mask of him? Yes, he does have a crush easily on women he meets and flirts with them but what if there is more than that?
Actually, one of the headcanons I’ve had for years is that Sanji has experienced a traumatic loss that has given him the deep fear of losing the others he holds dear (and that’s why he'd be so sacrificial) and Whole Cake Island sort of supported that thought. It can be possible that because he was strongly bullied by his siblings and despised by his own father (being called a weakling and so on), this all has stained his self-confidence below zero for good and it still will take time to see that he is worthy. Hopefully, Luffy’s words back in Baratie and the retrieval team’s efforts and experiencing his lowest point before the tea party opened his eyes for good and gave his character the chance to grow.
Tumblr media
Like many fans agree, the only place where Sanji has complete confidence is anywhere that is related on his profession, cooking because Zeff convinced that the “chibi-Nasu” really does have potential in becoming a chef, otherwise, he can be surprisingly insecure although he doesn’t show it up openly, perhaps he hides it with this kind of actions.  On top of that, Zeff raised Sanji to respect women so if he really was a pervert and didn’t care about what his foster father taught, then perhaps he would act more like Absalom. However, (again setting the comical aspects aside), I think Sanji himself knows where to cross the line when it really comes down to women. Most likely Zeff wouldn’t approve if Sanji really thought that women are just objects of lust and Sanji probably doesn’t want to disappoint (even unconsciously) someone who saved him from certain death and raised him as his own child.
Tumblr media
Only Oda-sensei knows completely his character and knows the answers but Sanji’s behavior makes me wonder that what if actually at some point he has created kind of an “alter ego” to protect himself? What if he built himself a personality full of confidence so no one would see that deep inside, there is a fragile boy and a wounded man? Well, this is all just speculation so it’s hard to say whether there is any truth behind these thoughts or not but shortly said, Sanji is a great character and there are definitely reasonable reasons for his behavior, in general. However, he indeed is stuck in these ero kappa- gag and it’s sometimes a shame indeed that some (potentially shippy) moments are ruined by those weird faces or when he goes too lustful but on the other hand, it might be just Oda’s way to keep the series’ focus on the main points instead of romance
It’s really hard to believe that Sanji would actually be a pervert as in the term is officially described but once again, it’s all about interpretation. However, if one takes a closer look to the comparison between Sanji’s and Absalom’s interest in Nami (and other women) and comparing it to the facts of what perversion is in terms of human behavior,  it can be easy to tell that out of these two, Absalom is the true pervert.
Strawhats+ in College!AU
AU for the straw hats (plus law and kid) in Greek life?
Warning: long ass post + i can’t quite imagine luff in college
Zoro-ya (Police Officer)
Tumblr media
 “Just give me some booze and I’ll make it.”
🤯 seriously, this guy’s lost 99% of the time, whether talking figuratively or literally, both will be correct
🤯 he needs the first few months in college to create a certain routine for himself and all of his classes, as well as adjust his Nap Schedule - it’d be so irritating for him whenever he can’t get a grasp out of the situation or simply forgets which lecture he’s supposed to attend, but he shifts to a total-chill attitude halfway through the semester
🤯 which usually means showing up at a 9AM lecture with a mug of coffee in one hand and a sports magazine in the other - since he can’t focus on whatever the professor’s saying, even if he tries, he might as well do something productive with his time
🤯 contrary to his lectures, he has 100% attendance on every kind of party going around the campus and quickly earns himself a reputation of the guy who never blacks out
🤯 cares more about the nearest gym opening hours than his studying schedule, although he doesn’t neglect it completely
🤯 he studies best in his dormitory - that is, provided he doesn’t have loud roommates - or in a cafeteria, where it’s relatively quiet, but not quiet enough for him to fall asleep
🤯 ends up with a Criminal Justice degree and a major in Law Enforcement
Sanji (Beauty Salon Worker)
Tumblr media
😱 “How can you help me? Push me down those stairs, please.”
😱 so overwhelmed, since he has to reconcile his job and lecture attendance
😱 due to his blood family giving zero shits about his education or future, he’s on his own - and he still somehow makes it, although not without having a mental breakdown every weekend
😱 (credit to the cute anon) Sanji was eligible for a scholarship but because he's officially a Vinsmoke, his biological family is too rich for him to get one, even though they don’t provide any support, let alone a financial one; he probably has a massive debt as well
😱 whenever he’s not at work and can’t even think about studying, he attends all those wild parties in order to create some bonds and find his drinking buddies
😱 has great time management skills, thanks to all of his struggles, and keeps up with his college budget - unfortunately, the most probable situation is that he’d be the only person he can actually rely on
😱 however, it wouldn’t stop him from putting himself out there whenever he’s got a chance; after all, the love of his life may be waiting for him just around the corner
😱 because he’s stressed out of his mind most of the time, he indulges in various addictions that may not be good for his health but at least provide the tiniest bit of calmness in his hectic schedule; whether it’s plain cigarette-smoking or excessive drinking, or even having sex with strangers just to get himself off and have an illusion of being cared about, he does it all without a blink, since that’s what keeps him going
😱 provided that he finally finds the time to study, he’s actually quite a fast learner - mostly in the silence of a library or in his own flat
😱 has a major in Cosmetics
Nami (Childcare Worker)
😈 “You’re already drunk? Good luck with that, pal.”
😈  just like Cersei, Nami’s not really into this whole sisterhood deal if she doesn’t know the people well - with the exception of Robin, who might be her one, true bestie, she doesn’t necessarily put much effort into strengthening any bonds
😈 she somehow has a great GPA, even though she attends more parties than lectures - but with her natural charms and wits, she’s able to convince pretty much anyone just how good of a student she is
😈 even though she likes to keep a safe distance from people, she enjoys partying and getting to know her colleagues; it’s always fun to prey on those who had the misfortune to black out as the first ones
😈 when she actually decides to show up to a lecture, her outfit needs to be on point, otherwise she wouldn’t feel comfortable at all
😈 regarding the time she dedicates for studying - it’s usually during the afternoon in the library, since she hates when someone disturbs her focus; her notes have to be highlighted and organized, that’s what gives her peace of mind
😈 ends up with a major in Psychology
bonus:
Tumblr media
Usopp (Graphic Designer)
Tumblr media
😱 “I have, like, three dollars for the entire week.”
😱  stressed out of his mind
😱 he knows the only person he can blame that on is no one other than himself, due to his advanced skills in procrastinating or simply not being able to focus on work when he needs to, thanks to his ADHD
😱 stays up late - not for assignments, which he manages to bullshit his way through 10 minutes before they’re due - but to watch old vines compilations, a guy who felled a tree with a chainsaw made of paper, detailed descriptions on how hydrogen bombs work or the entire playlist of Crash Course on world’s history
😱 at first may have a hard time bonding, but once everyone notices how good of a friend he is, he certainly won’t have any problems regarding social life or party invitations
😱 the boy’s on his phone almost all time - whether to keep up with his exploding social media or read a random article he accidentally clicked on; he’s also known for sending snaps in the middle of his lectures or tweeting about campus life and its most up-to-date gossip
😱 he studies most effectively when with a group of buddies - usually in the campus cafeteria; loves to keep his notes as colorful as possible, but he doesn’t really care for aesthetic
😱 naturally, majors in Graphic Design
Chopper (Elementary School Teacher)
Tumblr media
😵 “Omg, I’m going to fail this exam.” *gets 92%*
😵 i don’t really agree with Oda on this whole teaching deal - I think it’s obvious he’d go to med school to become a doctor
😵 one of those students who study really hard and it pays off, but he still stresses out everyone around him
😵 has perfect lecture attendance, because he actually enjoys listening to the professor; also asks a lot of questions regarding topics he doesn’t understand at first
😵 quickly makes friends, due to the whole year coming to him for explanation regarding various fields in the syllabus, or to just simply study with him - somehow, his aura of pure focus and concentration beams down on those around him
😵 could get a slight coffee addiction, since he tends to study during the night
Robin-chwan (Cabin Attendant)
Tumblr media
☕ takes surprisingly huge amount of joy in making up fake exam dates and then scaring her fellow colleagues with it
☕ what she’d prefer is simply studying on her own with piles of books stacking up all around her - she doesn’t need someone to explain a certain topic to her, she does it well enough on her own
☕ therefore, she’s not a huge fan of attending lectures, although she knows she has to; but usually just ends up reading the textbook ahead without paying much attention to the surroundings
☕ she studies best with scribbling notes on the margins of the book, maybe creating a few mind maps to link the historic events together, also uses only one highlighter since too many colors would be distracting
☕ regarding her social life; since she quite often reads around the campus, in various places, she gets a lot of chances to talk to people and is not afraid to start the conversation first
☕ shows up at parties and usually stays up till the morning - minding her own business and with a group of friends, she knows how to have fun and keep herself entertained
☕ pursues Archeology, that’s for sure
Franky (Pilot)
Tumblr media
👻 “Ayyy, which paper is it today? Bring it on, losers.”
👻 even if he is a little bit overwhelmed, he doesn’t let it show - he just tries to have as much fun as possible while doing things that have to be done
👻 once he decides to study a topic, he’s not giving up on it or taking a break until he gets it; that may have something to do with the fact that the faster he’s done with studying, the more he can party and load himself with waterfalls of energy drinks that he so loves
👻 if the subject picks his interest, he likes to tune in to the lecture and listen to the professor - he may or may not try to reconstruct whatever project is discussed later on, in his own dorm and with his own safety rules
👻 he is quite popular around the campus, due to his outgoing nature and easiness in cracking jokes, as well as being always down to a makeout session or simple petting with anyone who he finds attractive
👻 goes with Aerospace Engineering
Brook (Detective)
Tumblr media
👑 “I’ll be honest with you, I don’t know what day it is. And I don’t care.”
👑 what he mostly pursues is not a high GPA or his lecture hall but quick entertainment involving some sort of sexual acts or just innocent intimacy with another person - it gives him a rush and he has no problems in admitting in front of himself that he might be quite hooked on it
👑 studies when it’s an absolute must, whether with a group of friends or on his own, he just wants to get it over with and indulge in campus social life - if he makes notes, they’re usually on a plain sheet of paper written with black ink; that’s how he’s able to focus and regurgitate information
👑 loves the parties and gatherings where he’s usually in the center of attention - and people like him, because he’s not too cocky and conceited, he just wants to have a good time
👑 gets a degree in Criminal Justice
Jinbe
Tumblr media
🧣 “Just don’t.”
🧣 he’s the one who makes it through college without any actual problems or breakdowns every other day; and he doesn’t have a lot of sympathy to those who complain too much
🧣 he’s just there, observing the huge amounts of alcohol being poured into certain individuals who most probably have an important exam the next day and he’s slowly losing his faith in humanity
🧣 he just needs some time to understand that different people have different ways of dealing with certain stages of life - some do that with a peace of mind, some need vodka and liquor to get through it, and that’s just how it is
🧣 would want to pursue a career of an FBI Agent or Fish and Game Warden, he’s not sure yet, but he’s getting there
🧣 has a rather simple recipe for a productive study session - in the comfort of his own flat, where all the textbooks are available and within reach
🧣 ends up with a degree in Criminal Justice
The Edge Lord (Doctor)
Tumblr media
☃️ “No, I won’t have sex with you.”
☃️ so tired and fed up with the whole world - he just wants to focus on studying and getting through his exams, but people keep throwing distractions at him no matter how unwelcoming and obnoxious he gets
☃️ since there’s no one hotter than him on the campus, he draws quite a lot of attention; unnecessary attention which he’d rather pass to someone else
☃️ “Leave me alone, for Christ’s sake.”
☃️ he doesn’t attend the lectures only when he’s too tired - other than that, he prefers not to miss anything and he can always spend the time doing something productive
☃️ he studies most effectively with a textbook and a black pen, scribbling shortened notes on the margins and underlining important phrases
☃️ Traffy’s got few friends but he’d chop himself to tiniest pieces for them - and he knows they’d do the same for him as well
☃️ engages in various extracurricular activities for the sake of credit, or as a form of spending time when he’s got no particular plans for the afternoon
☃️ he’s constantly stressed - therefore, he likes to have a quick drink before the lectures or during the night, which turns into quite an addiction, but he knows he wouldn’t be able to get through it all without alcohol or other forms of stress-relief
The Spawn of Satan (Weapons Dealer)
Tumblr media
🔥 “Aye, if you ever need someone to show you around or somethin’, just call me.”
🔥 no one knows how he gets through the exams - but he does, and would be capable of getting high scores, if only he decided to study more than the bare minimum
🔥 what he’s most interested in is being around people, throwing parties or attending them, drinking booze and having a damn good time with his friends - after all, he’s there to have fun and make memories
🔥 his method of studying the night before an exam is simple; he just reads the paragraphs and underlines the phrases that he thinks are important, and that’s all it takes for him to remember and understand the material
🔥 what he’d rather be doing is getting laid and making out with everyone, but also, surprisingly or not, working a part-time job - he needs the money to feel that he’s in control of his own life, to know that he’s got financial stability and is not dependent on anyone other than himself
🔥 would have a hard time figuring his life out and what he wants to do in the future, but, thankfully, he’s got that one friend that will stay by his side no matter what - so that Kiddo will never be alone in this mess
Mochi Mochii
Tumblr media
🍩 “When is this going to end?”
🍩 he minds his own business - or, at least, tries to; due to the excessive amount of family reunions or casual barbecue invitations every other day, he gets so distracted from his studies
🍩 he knows what he went to college for and keeps his aspirations in mind at all times; despite his great time management skills, broad schedule and a bullet journal, he still far too often ends up cramming in the library the night before an exam - since he doesn’t want to let down his family and leave them hanging during all those gatherings that they always invite him to during weekday
🍩 Mochi doesn’t really get all this hype for getting hammered and carrying out make-out sessions with strangers whenever possible, so he just sits back and observes the shit going down around him at parties
🍩 he enjoys studying, but only the topics that he knows are useful or genuinely interest him - in a silent library or a bookstore, he highlights the most important information and sticks post-it notes all over the pages how cute is this?
🍩 would go for either Criminal Justice to become a security guard or training programs for tattoo artists
Allergies | Sanji Vinsmoke
Tumblr media
anime: one piece
word count: 1826
note: im not allergic to anything but i hate seafood. i could never be a pirate whoops. also the mc here is shy and not assertive just like me irl.
***
It was a beautiful day in the Grand Line. The sun was shining brightly in the sky. The birds were soaring through the clear blue sky. The white puffy clouds were scuttling along. There weren't any signs of marines. It was a calm and peaceful day. Sanji took the opportunity to cut some watermelon for you all - much to your delight. You decided to take a stroll in Nami's tangerine garden. You took a deep breath. The smell of citrus lingered in the atmosphere.
You watched everyone over at the main deck. There was lots of commotion, just like any other day with the StrawHats. Sanji was flirting with Nami. Robin was reading a book. Zoro was taking a nap. Usopp, Chopper and Luffy were all fishing together. They all seemed extremely concentrated. Luffy started to pull on his fishing rod. Chopper and Usopp pulled too to help him. Eventually, what looked to seem a huge crab was on the deck. It was trying to escape, probably because it didn't want to be eaten. Luffy punched it, and it stopped moved around.
"We caught a huge crab today!" Luffy declared proudly.
"How the hell did he catch a crab on a fishing rod?" Nami asked. She rubbed her temples out of annoyance.
"Who cares? Sanji grill it up so we can all eat it." Usopp grinned.
"It looks edible. We should totally eat it!" Chopper added.
You felt your heart drop. You walked down the stairs to the main deck to take a closer look at the crab. Yep it was definitely one. You grimaced. You had an allergic reaction to shellfish. Thankfully, it wasn't
too severe. The last time you ate one was when you were five years old. You ended up with hives, abdominal pain and diarrhea afterwards. You even threw up a few times. You shuddered at the memory. It was a terrible couple days.
Sanji swung the dead crab over his shoulder and headed over to the kitchen. "If everyone wants me to grill it up. I'll go ahead and do that. It seems like a nice day too to have a barbecue outside. Grilled crab legs will taste just fine. I'll be sure to make it extra nice for my sweet Nami, Robin and [first name]."
Luffy, Usopp and Chopper started to run around and shout in excitement. "Barbecue! Barbecue! Barbecue!" They chanted.
Nami snacked them all in the head and told them to quiet down. Zoro was still asleep through all their commotion. You felt your mouth drop. Amazing..
You were hesitant about telling Sanji about your allergy. What kind of pirate is allergic to shellfish? That's a large portion of the sea you weren't able to eat. It was pathetic. You were usually able to avoid shellfish because Sanji would cook up other foods, but today you guys were just having that huge crab your captain caught. It would probably last for days. You felt sick to your stomach.
"Are you doing okay [first name]? Do you need a checkup?" Chopper trotted over and asked you.
You shook your head and forced a smile. "I'm okay Chopper. Don't worry about me. I'm excited about the barbecue."
He was hesitant about leaving you, but then relented and joined the others to create some more ruckus.
Sanji brought out the pieces of crab and the huge barbecue grill. He also brought garlic butter sauce with him. He turned the grill on. The thick metal rods started to turn red hot. You started to feel nauseous again. You watched the cook place the pieces of crab legs on the grill swiftly. After they were finished grilling, he drizzled the garlic butter sauce on top. You watched as he cut the fruit up swiftly and excellently. He was fast with those fingers. He cut up some more fresh fruit and made some more fruit skewers. He poured everyone some alcohol into glasses.
Sanji hung his jacket over the chair. He tie was also removed. He removed the cigarette from his mouth and exhaled the soft tendrils of smoke. He seemed to noticed your gaze. You've been watching him prepare the food for awhile now. You didn't seem to notice him standing right in front of you now.
"Is everything alright [first name]?" He asked softly.
You shook your head. "I'm fine don't worry about me. I can't wait for the food!"
"It's just about ready actually. I'll serve you first."
"No fair! I wanted to get my food first!" Luffy shouted.
"Shut up! Nami, Robin and [first name] get to eat first. The rest of you idiots can wait."
Sanji handed you your plate first. Your stomach lurched. The smell brought back some terrible memories, but you couldn't say you no. You felt bad as stupid as it seemed. You've only been on the crew for a month. The last thing you wanted was to cause trouble for the others. Sanji was a nice guy and went through all that trouble for you.
You gulped. You decided not to touch the crab and instead started to munch on the fruit. The juices spilt forth and quenched your thirst. You continued to munch on them and talked with the others. Everyone was shouting and singing.
"Are you not hungry [first name]? You haven't touched your crab legs. I can have them if you want."
Luffy said. Before you could answer, he reached over to try and take them.
Sanji smacked his arm away. "Don't touch them you idiot! It's for [first name]!"
"I'm okay really. I'm not a fan of crab anyway." You said.
"Come on you can't say that without even trying it." Zoro said. It seemed like the swordsman finally woke up from his nap to eat.
"I agree. Sanji's cooking is really something! Meals are something we all look forward too now." Nami added. "Just take a bite."
Everyone's eyes were on you. The pressure of eating was starting to get to you. Your stomach lurched again. The nausea clawed at your throat, and you tried forced it down the bile. You took a piece of crab and took a bite. Your tastebuds danced in delight. They were right. It's delicious. You finished the whole piece.
"It's amazing. Wow Sanji you're really talented aren't y-" Your voice was cut off from a fit of coughing. Your stood up from where you were sitting. Your chest started to ache. Your eyes started to water. Your breathing hitched. They became more and more shallow.
You lost the colour from your face. You swayed for just a moment before you felt a pair of arms catch you and lower you to the ground. The whole world started to spin, and everything became pitch black.
***
You could hear the worried voices around you, but you weren't able to make out the words at first. Eventually, you started to hear familiar voices.
"Is she okay?"
"Your food is killing her that's what's happening."
"Shut up mosshead! Are you trying to pick a fight?"
"Can I finish the rest of her food?"
"How could you say that? You're the captain! If you're going to be useless, then I'll take charge. Captain Usopp demands you help [first name]!"
"Everyone get out! I'm the doctor and I need to treat her!"
You finally came to and saw a blurry figure standing before you. It was a reindeer. You looked closely to realize it was Chopper. He was treating you.
"Don't get up. I'm still making the medicine to treat your hives. They're all over your arms."
You laid back down and felt your stomach lurch again. This time you couldn't hold back the nausea. You ran for somewhere to contain all your vomit. This time it was Usopp's bag. He left it in infirmary when he was in there earlier.
Chunks of partially digested crab spewed out of your coughing, choking mouth. Your stomach kept on contracting violently and forcing everything up and out. Your face was white and dripping bile, sweat, and tears. Your lurched forward and sunk to your knees. The pungent stench invaded your nostrils and you heaved even though there was nothing left to go.
"I'm sorry. I was allergic. Everyone seemed excited so I was afraid to say anything. All I did was cause everyone more trouble..." You said softly, choking back the tears. You were so embarrassed. You felt pathetic. Vomiting and collapsing like that.
There was a puff of smoke that appeared in the room. You glanced up to see the cook standing at the doorway. You looked away in embarrassment. It was probably him who caught you anyway.
"You really worried us you know. I thought you were a goner. I'm glad Chopper is here to help you out. I'm also glad I was able to catch you too." He smiled.
You rolled your eyes but a smile crept on your face. "The crab..it tasted good. I wouldn't mind trying it again."
Sanji chuckled. He took the cigarette out of his mouth and stepped on it so the fire would go out. He walked over to you. He squatted down since you were on for floor. He wrapped an arm around your shoulders and pulled you close, gently rubbing your arm. Despite the queasiness in your stomach, it fluttered at the feeling of your body pressed against his. You sunk into the warmth of his side, appreciative of the simple gesture. His touch made the room warmer somehow, you felt much better.
"Get better soon alright? I'm sorry about that [first name]. I didn't want to hurt you. From now on, don't hesitate to tell us anything. We're friends now." He whispered in your ear.
You hugged him tighter and slowly nodded. "Okay. I will. Don't worry."
The door was swung open as the sniper stepped in. He gasped at Sanji and you hugging each other. Sanji immediately let go. He glared at Usopp and he gulped. "Hate to ruin the sweet moment. But where's my bag? I left it in here didn't I?"
You handed him the bag. "Here it is. I threw up in it though."
He stared at the bag in utter disbelief. "How could you! It had all my weapons in here." He screamed.
"It'll be fine. I'll make it up to you later at the next island. Now get out. Sanji and I were talking."
Usopp stormed out of the room. "Talking huh. It seemed like there was more action than talking." He grumbled.
A bead of sweat appeared on the side of the reindeer’s face. He stood there and rubbed his head sheepishly. "Everyone's forgetting I'm here..."
Usopp for the character questions meme! Requested via Twitter!
This has some (vague) One Piece spoilers up through the current arc.
favourite thing about him He's a wonderful mess of contradictions who somehow fit together seamlessly. Fearful yet courageous, a liar who uses his power for kindness, a braggart who steals the credit but entertains people in the process (and who doesn't care if anyone knows the *really* important stuff he does); who's intensely engaged in the people around him yet his ambition is one that only he can decide if he's reached or not. A warm-hearted guy who can be a bit of a jerk; a prey for dark emotions who's more negative than negative ghosts, but who's also one of the most loudly enthusiastic people on the crew... And I love that he's a big talker. He doesn't always say the right thing, and he knows it: but he keeps trying. Just like he keeps trying to restrain his darker self and focus on the joys of life and the spirit of adventure. He's a marvel and I love him so much. ♥♥♥♥♥
least favourite thing about him Pre-timeskip: he can be a big jerk sometimes, but mostly he should try to like himself more and be better at remembering how amazing he can be; to have more faith in his own abilities. Post-timeskip: It's not him, it's Oda *sigh* who apparently forgot how to write him for any longer time after Punk Hazard at least. (Very OOC, unrecognisably so, for a big part of Dressrosa. Okay at Zou but absent in the following long Rescue Sanji arc, and now at Wano he's.... kinda around, but is mostly ignored)
favourite line Usopp: Silence!!! Are you saying that YOU can beat him, lying there half-dead?! Luffy: I'M gonna beat him!! He's MINE! Usopp: Then GET ON YOUR FEET! Stop lying face down on the ground! This isn't like you!! Covered by smoke or not, you can still see the sky! You can still see the water!! It's not like this is Hell! So stop looking like you're dead!! Stop breaking our hearts here, dammit!!!
brOTP With all his crewmates; with the Usopp Pirates; possibly with Kaya
OTP Luffy/Usopp ♥♥♥
I also like to ship him with Nami, Zoro, Kaya, Sanji, Franky, Robin, Vivi, Ace, Smoker, etc... and as part of trios: with Nami & Usopp, Zoro & Sanji, Zoro & Nami, Sanji & Nami, Robin & Franky... back when we wondered if Sogeking would be a permanent persona, I saw an intriguing ficlet with Kaya/Usopp/Luffy/Sogeking. ETA: Oh, and I also love Merryshipping! That is to say, an OT5 with Luffy/Zoro/Nami/Usopp/Sanji.
nOTP I guess I'm not wild about shipping him with villains, unless it's in the context of some kind of redemption scenario. (On the other hand, if it IS? That has a lot of nice potential...)
random headcanon 1. That blue-and-white armband he's rarely seen without doesn't have any obvious emotional weight in something he might have been given by his mother, or a memento of his father, or anything like that. It was just a scrap of cloth from a neighbour he sew into an armband in his younger teens. Only it happened right as people had started to tell him he needed to grow up and get rid of those stupid pirate dreams, learn a regular trade and think of the future. He decided not to listen to them and also that he'd make this armband a symbol of his determination; as long as he wore it he would keep his dream alive and one day he WOULD go to sea wearing it on his arm, seeking Adventure.
(Over time, though, after he'd actually joined the crew this inner declaration faded and he realized it wouldn't matter if he lost the armband or put it away for a while: he was wearing his resolve in his heart now where it couldn't be taken off. But he still loves the old thing, and thinks it makes him look cool.)
2. Sometimes he imagines himself as a wizened old man telling people about all the things he's witnessed, as the legend of Monkey D. Luffy. At other times he deeply questions whether he will ever live to an old age.
unpopular opinion I don't know how unpopular this is, but I've seen a good number of fans assume he's anxious in various social situations, that he doesn't want people to pay attention to him, and that he doesn't like being reminded of his long nose. This is all wrong. He knows his nose is long and doesn't have a complex over it; he only gets scared of obviously or probably dangerous things and people, and/or supernatural stuff - and he utterly loves being in the centre of attention. He's an extravert, he wants to be around people. He can entertain himself when he's alone (just like Luffy), but just like Luffy, he prefers not to have to.
song i associate with him I'm lame and can only think of One Piece songs like my two faves, Kokoro no Chizu (opening), and Eternal Pose (ending)
favourite picture of him This would take days and days to answer even 10% properly, even if I just stick to wading through my own Tumblr trawling for fave pics. So here, have a fluffy Lusopp pic from the anime which I legitimately do adore!
609-610: "Luffy Dies from Exposure?! The Spine Chilling Snow Woman Monet" and "Fists Collide! a Battle of the Two Vice Admirals!"
Tumblr media
Surrounded by trash, unsure of location or direction. Too real, Luffy. Too real.
I feel like a broken record at the moment but Punk Hazard really is delivering.
Across 609 and 610, we had Law vs Vergo with a surprise interruption by Smoker. Caesar was the subject of unexpected character development. Even Luffy vs Monet had a twist, with Luffy falling into a trash compactor and meeting a tiny talking dragon.
I bet that’s Foxfire’s son. The little dragon had a kid’s voice.
I’m just glad the big dragon the Strawhats roasted wasn’t Momonosuke (@mrkashkiet, I am looking at you sternly. xD)
Law Just Cannot Quit Smoking
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And does not want to.
The action picked up with Vergo hoofing it to the SAD Room. Speed lines ahoy!
Inside, Law slowly drew his sword in front of a vast tank of SAD Gas. Not sure what he was planning to do, but let’s not dwell on it, in case his plan was literally explosive.
Vergo appeared at the door. “I feel like my hand has been bitten by my own dog. This is too much even for a mischievous child. You were always too smart for your own good. People like you tend to die young.”
You know, I’m not keen on stoic villain types but I’ve got to admit that Vergo has some killer lines.
“It would be easiest to crush your heart but I won’t do that. I’ll torment you slowly as I please and warp your smart ass face with fear.”
Like I said, good lines.
He wailed on Law with grim purpose to the point I found myself shouting, “Come on, Law! ROOM YOURSELF OUT OF THERE!”  Law was not having a fun time. (Dare I say, he was SAD?)
But his instinct for shit-talking was irrepressible. “Are you guys frustrated because your scheme is coming crashing down? Is this thing that important to you?”
Well, yeah... If Caesar is *the only person* who can make whatever it is that Doflamingo wants, then SAD must be profitable. Profits before pals seems to be Doflamingo’s modus operandi, but I don’t get the feeling Law is all that surprised Vergo is trying to kill him.
Law did fight back. There was an attempt.  He tried to Room his heart back. But Vergo is fast and snatched Law’s heart from the air.
The worst thing, though? Vergo punched Law so hard he lost his hat. That is not cool. It must have riled Law enough for him to try his (awesome) Counter Shock attack. It was big, flashy and high voltage, but it only left Vergo lightly toasted.
Vergo must have decided to kill Law then because he said, “I have a message from Joker. He said, ‘What a shame.’”
Law was weirdly zen about the whole situation. “Oh, well. It didn’t work. I was pretty sure I could take my heart back from Caesar, but I didn’t expect you here, Vergo.”
The lack of -san honorific was the last straw for Vergo. He squeezed Law’s heart like a stress ball. Toei’s red filter descended. Soul-shredding pain was experienced. Law screamed a lot. As you would if your heart was being squeezed by a maniac.
Then, a shaft of light descended from the vaulted heavens.
Except not really because it was Smoker.
It’s almost the same thing.
Vergo was typically cool about the interruption. “I’m in the middle of something. Does it have to be now, Vice-Admiral Smoker?”
And I did a backflip. Yes. Excellent interruption. Great timing, Smoker! Now stop being so fixated on the Big Tanks That Go “Blort” and execute your glorious revenge!
Really, now I think about it, Vergo is almost as bad as Caesar. When Smoker called Vergo out on his deceit and told him not to tell the G5 Men as he was a father figure to them, Vergo said, “Don’t tell me you actually care about those guys? I’m a base commander. I can do whatever I want to my no-good subordinates.” Another one who treats other people as disposable pawns.
Unsurprisingly, Smoker and Vergo came to blows. Smoker seems to be having more luck than Law, but then Vergo does not have Smoker’s heart in a box. What I’d like to happen is Smoker retrieving Law’s heart and they tag-team Vergo into oblivion.
That sounded wrong. But you get what I mean.
Star Wars Episode IV: A New Rubbery Hope
Tumblr media
How did Luffy end up in the Death Star’s trash compactor?
His battle with a bird woman from Hoth went south. Literally.
And I cannot believe I am about to say this, but I kind of wish Luffy’s fight with Monet was a little bit longer. Her powers are great. Her self-awareness and cunning are too.
She maintained those ten layer kamakura walls without breaking a sweat. When Luffy smashed one layer, she wrapped another around her frozen prison without missing a beat. Luffy knew she was stalling for time and said he’d just break every layer quicker than she could replace them.
“I bet,” she said. Then swept up behind Luffy and, in an oddly flirty manner, whispered in his ear, “I don’t think I’ll win if I fight you, but the strongest isn’t always the winner in a fight.”
Then she grabbed him and wrapped him, literally, in winter’s embrace.
That hypothermia power was quite cool (no pun intended). Paired with those desolate, snowy vistas and her eerily calm voice urging Luffy to let go, to sleep, relax and let it be, Monet’s Devil Fruit seems pretty strong to me.
But just as Luffy was about to pass out, Zoro’s voice - the very warning he yelled at Luffy a couple of episodes ago - cut through the darkness. “THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING OF THE NEW WORLD!”
I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of the blue filtered haki moments. When he sprang up and let loose that Jet Spear attack, I cheered.
Then he fell through the floor into a garbage chute and I laughed.
It was cool, though. He’s rubber. He’d bounce. And sure enough, it wasn’t long before he was raking through broken gadgets for food. At which point a tiny dragon spoke to him and that is where the story ended.
I am now 75% sure that tiny dragon is Momonosuke. It had a kid’s voice. Probably should be a higher percentage than that but I like to hedge my bets, haha.
Chopper Looks Like Every Harried Substitute Teacher Ever
Tumblr media
While Luffy was readjusting to life in a trash compactor with a small talking dragon, Monet flapped away to tick off another box on the never ending to do list: securing the Addicted Experiment Kiddies.
Said kiddies were knocking lumps out of Chopper with their ferocious addict strength. He could not restrain them without hurting them. He tried to convince them not to eat the candy. “I know it’s hard but you have to endure it!”
The thing is, Chopper was dealing with a double helping of trouble here. Not only are they kids, who are naturally more self-centred due to their developing brains. They are also addicts who are so far down the rabbit hole of whatever drug Caesar was peddling they’ll do anything for a fix.
When Chopper’s rumble ball wore off, the kids trampled him and thundered straight for the Biscuit Room, where Mocha was waiting alone.
Luckily, he was picked up by Nami, Zoro, Usopp, Robin, Brook and Foxfire. (Do not remember Brownbeard hanging around. Did he leave or did he just not have any lines?)
Robin tried to restrain the kids. That was interesting for two reasons: one, I didn’t know Robin could feel damage sustained by her extra hands, and two, she asked Usopp and Brook to try and find a pair of Sea Prism Stone cuffs because Luffy had asked her to. (I bet his plan is to cuff Caesar!)
The kids charged Mocha, who tried to tell them the candy was evil! Then Monet whirled into the room on a frosty zephyr. (The best part of this entrance was when Usopp shouted: “I TOLD YOU THERE WAS A BIRD WOMAN!” He was finally vindicated.)
Yay, thought Mocha. It’s Monet-san. She’s lovely!
Nooooope. Monet told her, in a sweet, ever-so-reasonable voice that it wasn’t nice to keep all the candy for herself. Mocha should share it with the others, like always. Mocha’s little face when she sensed betrayal was just heart-wrenching. “Why?” she whispered.
Because Monet is a nasty piece of work just like Caesar? Just a thought.
Not sure what’s going to happen here. There are a *lot* of Strawhats in the room, so I’m guessing Monet will be defeated by them. Then they’ll push through, deliver the cuffs and - BAM - we have one angry, kidnapped scientist.
Sanji Acquires Unexpected Fans
Tumblr media
This was a short scene but the fact that Sanji has a cadre of devoted fans in the G5 is hilarious. Yeah, he claims he doesn’t want their approval. And he probably doesn’t.
But Sanji cannot stop himself running back to save the poor saps who can be saved.
This is the Sanji I like: surly on the outside with a golden heart on the inside. More, please!
And the Academy Award for Best Actor goes to . . .
Tumblr media
CAESAR CLOWN!
Seriously.
The yarns this guy can spin could crush the GDP of a small textile-dependent country.
Caesar should run for office somewhere. Then he could appoint himself head of the science department.
For that is exactly what has been bugging him for years, it seems. He wants Vegapunk’s job.
Well... maybe not the job. (He’s getting by just fine thanks to pirates. A Government job would ruin that). It’s the fame and kudos. That’s what he’s after.
Plus he has a weird goal: to achieve world peace by obliterating all sources of conflict - collateral damage be damned. Unless he’s lying about that. Given his oscar-winning performance, that would not surprise me.
The action picked up with Caesar caesaring through a pipe and landing outside the Secret Room (I laughed when I realised everyone on Punk Hazard literally calls it the Secret Room).
He was bitching about having to enter the room because it was Vegapunk’s old office. Still, he claimed it was the only place where he could “pull it off”. (I am unsure why he had to go to Vegapunk’s old office just to close some doors, but I’ll chalk it up to plot and say no more.)
He promised to make Luffy, the Strawhats, G5 and Trafalgar Law pay for ruining his plan. It was all their fault! The experiment could have been a great show - everything perfect and beautiful and befitting of the world’s greatest scientist (Vegapunk says hi!) But they screwed it up. He couldn’t let the Strawhats do as they liked. They’d pushed it a little too far and he has Joker on his back now.
He ordered a minion to close the gates to Buildings C and D. This would lure all survivors into one narrow room. His plan? Trap them in the bottleneck and pump the room full of his poison gas through the air vents. He would broadcast it as a snuff movie for the brokers. That would show them what he was really made of!
But the minions hang on his every word and they caught one small discrepancy.
“Um... did you say that *you* had created the poison gas, Master?”
Caesar’s haughty reply was, “Yes, I did.”
“But it’s like Vegapunk’s gas. It freaks us out.” Understandably, the minions probably have ptsd from four years ago.
The moment when Caesar realised he’d let his ego run away with him and opened his big mouth was glorious. How could he spin this? How? The animators did a great job here. You could see the evil, conniving cogs turning in his mind.
Then he broke out his Oscar winning performance.
“This is . . . an avenging battle of science. My people! That day, I tried to stop the mad scientist, Vegapunk. No! If such a weapon exploded, what would happen to the people on the island?” Caesar even threw in a melodramatic “YAMEROOOOO, VEGAPUNK!” for some extra emotional sparkle.
“But the accident happened. And he still lords if over us as the head of the science department of the Marines. and he’s considered the world’s greatest scientist. I cannot tolerate it! He’s the cruel man who hurt you all! Do you think it’s right that people still call him the number one scientist? That’s why I want to prove them all wrong. I didn’t want to make a weapon of mass destruction! But I want to show them that there is a greater scientist here. That I am the greatest scientist in the world! When the Marines acknowledge it and when I become head of the science department, my dream will come true. I can use my scientific knowledge to bring peace to the world!”
I honestly had to stop myself giving Caesar a standing ovation. What a performance that was.
You know, it’s weird. Every lie Caesar told there has a basis in truth. That’s the most dangerous liar right there because the lies they tell are more believable. Does the Gas-Gas Fruit confer gaslighting powers too? Because Caesar is a hellishly efficient manipulator.
And while Caesar was congratulating himself, a flashback happened!
Caesar is Prime Material for /r/IAmVerySmart
Tumblr media
Caesar with a bob was weird. I’m guessing when he moved to Punk Hazard, there was a lack of stylists, so he just grew his hair out. That hair you see right now? That is four years of growth.
At any rate, Caesar was doing something a bit more important back in Vegapunk’s lab. He was debating morality with some other scientists. They begged him to stop his experiment. If it exploded, it would kill everyone on the island.
Caesar was typically receptive to criticism. “STFU, boneheads! Where do you think you are? This is a Marine research facility. They want to kill as many pirates as the can. What they need is a weapon that will do it for them.”
“But they don’t want one that will also kill civilians!”
Caesar’s rebuttal? “It’s called collateral damage! If we blow away everything, we can bring peace to the world.” (Does he genuinely believe that? That’s a properly depressing view of the world he holds there, if true.)
“You’re so...”
Caesar had a, “I’m gonna stop you right there” moment. They wanted to say he was cruel? What a joke. They were using prisoners as guinea pigs as if they were trash. What was the difference? (Fair point, Caesar.) Moreover, Admiral Sengoku was too soft, but Akainu, if he was in charge, *he* would want a weapon Caesar made. (Also interesting. I hope Caesar never decides to change sides again. He would be dangerous in Akainu’s hands.)
He went off on one about how Vegapunk had failed to turn people into giants again. Caesar knows you can’t turn people into giants in a short period of time unless you use magic, so had suggested Vegapunk just kidnap some kids and feed them drugs until something worked. What a lovely idea, Caesar! xD
The flash forward revealed Caesar’s “William Birkin Moment”.
Just as he made a significant discovery, Marines burst in and cuffed him with sea prism stone. Vegapunk himself came to see off his old colleague. I was ONE HUNDRED PERCENT HYPED for about half a second. But there was no face.
Blue balled. Again. xD
Caesar was summarily dismissed from the Science Department. “Your eccentric behaviour is intolerable and I cannot protect you anymore, Caesar.”
Interesting that what the rest of the scientists did was viewed as fine and dandy, but Caesar taking it a step further was regarded as “eccentric”. First off, eccentric is a gross understatement. Secondly, what they’re doing is pretty evil too. Caesar is just overtly, unashamedly amoral. They hide it better.
Suffering such a humiliation, Caesar had his “SCREW YOU!” moment and pushed the big red button. Punk Hazard went up in a Mighty Kaboom-Boom Cloud.
Still wondering how they all survived that, but I will chalk it up to plot and say no more.
Of course, after Caesar’s theatrics, his minions fell over themselves to apologise. Sorry, Master! You are the saviour, after all.
“Thank you... thank you all,” Caesar simpered, while inside he called them unintelligent fools. So easily manipulated. Dumb as bricks.
This guy needs taking down several pegs. Maybe an entire cloakroom rack.
Luffy, please oblige asap.
FEATURE SERIES: My Favorite One Piece Arc with Greg Werner
Tumblr media
  I love One Piece and I love talking to people who love One Piece. And with the series going on 23 years now, there is a whole lot to talk about. As the series is about to publish its 1000th chapter, a true feat in and of itself, we thought we should reflect upon the high-seas adventure and sit down with some notable names in the One Piece fan community and chat about the arcs they found to be especially important, or just ones they really, really liked.
  Welcome to the next article in the series "My Favorite One Piece Arc!"
  My next guest in this series is Greg Werner, the official One Piece columnist for Shueshia and Toei. For my chat with him, he chose the Arlong Park, in which Luffy and his crew take on Arlong and Nami officially joins Team Straw Hat.
  A note on spoilers: If you haven't seen the Arlong Park arc yet, this interview does contain major plot points. Watch the Arlong Park arc starting RIGHT HERE if you'd like to catch up or rewatch!
Tumblr media
    Dan Dockery: Sell me on Arlong Park, in one sentence. Let's say that I'd gotten to the end of the Baratie Arc, and I decided "You know what? I don't think this is for me." What would you say to convince me to keep going?
  Greg Werner: I don’t know if I could sell a bottle to a milkman, but I’ll give it a shot ... Can it be in the form of a question?
  Yes.
  Do you want to know Nami’s backstory? And that seems so facile, but you’re coming off Baratie with the knowledge that Nami has betrayed the crew, she has left the crew, and she has stolen the ship. But it seems like she’s not acting freely, and she mentions the name “Bellemere.” So if you’ve gone through One Piece and you’ve come to that point, that’s simple enough.
Tumblr media
    So, you have Luffy who wants to go get her, an injured Zoro, Usopp, who's gotta be in a weird state, and Sanji who finds her extremely attractive and cool. It's a fun dynamic.
  Zoro and Usopp are an interesting combination, they always are. Usopp always feels like Zoro’s little brother and Zoro kind of has to take a back seat due to injuries here. But I always find their interactions to be very sweet, and you get to see a kind side of Zoro, which is the antithesis of how he interacts with Sanji. And you’re getting hints of the rivalry between Zoro and Sanji here, one that ramps up to the hunting contest in Little Garden, at which point they cease to call each other by their names and just insult one another. And between Luffy and Sanji, you get these kindred spirits due to their dreams. Usopp and Zoro are a little more straight-faced about their dreams, but both Sanji and Luffy utter their dreams with these big smiles. So even though Oda has his pieces all over the map, it’s nice to see the freshness of all of them working together, which is something you won’t find in anything but the best shonen action series.
  When you meet Arlong, he's kind of a jerk. He doesn't seem very nice. But he's one of the first One Piece villains who seems like a complete character. He's mighty but underhanded and deceitful. What does his introduction do for One Piece?
  So I bought the first ten volumes for a co-worker because he’d seemed interested in it, and I said “There, you’ve got the first ten volumes. Now you have no excuse not to get into it.” And we’ve been talking about it recently, especially the little details, and we found something very interesting about Arlong. There’s one aspect of Arlong that is completely different from every villain up to this point and it’s how he treats his crew. Buggy starts off beating up one of his crew members. Part of Kuro’s plan is to kill his crew. Krieg only sees his crew as numbers and will gas them. Arlong, though, to members of his crew, he’s extraordinarily loyal. When he finds out that Zoro has beaten up his crew, Arlong is pissed. In some ways, he’s very similar to Luffy, but he’s despicable and terrifying and he’s one of my favorite villains.
Tumblr media
    That's a great point; Arlong is the first bad guy to have pride in his crew. Speaking of Arlong's crew, this is the first time we get the classic 1v1 where a Straw Hat member matches up against an antagonist crew member. When you first read this, because it's electric every time I watch it, how did you feel to watch it go full-on battle manga?
  Zoro’s a beast. Sanji’s a beast. But Usopp? Facing down this insurmountable force? How is he gonna do this? And I think that’s the moment that got me. The others are awesome, and I love them, and they’re great, funny battles. But with Usopp fighting Chew, it showed Oda’s ability to shine in a certain way. Like Toriyama and Dragon Ball, Oda’s been very influenced by Jackie Chan, because Jackie Chan fights are awesome, visually stunning fights, but they’re funny. And that’s what Oda strives for sometimes. When you combine the action with the gags, you get something very special. You’re not just excited, but you’re laughing, too. And I think Usopp’s battles represent the pinnacle of that. It clicked for me there and it became a page-turner. It feels like what a shonen action series should be. And I enjoy Oda’s different takes on it, but he does it so well here.
Tumblr media
    I’m glad you bring up Toriyama and Dragon Ball because if you read any interview with any Shonen Jump author, they praise Toriyama. And it’s deserved. The man’s battle scenes and pacing have never been beaten and probably never will be. He’s the master. But one of the things I like about Oda is that he doesn’t try to copy them. Rather, he takes bits and pieces and spins it off into his own thing. Do you remember the Oda interview with Toriyama where he was like “I really liked Tao Pai Pai …”
  From Color Walk 1.
  And Toriyama was like “I ... drew that?” It’s the funniest thing in the world to me.
  I think his exact words were “Now you’re getting into the minor characters.” And Oda’s like “MINOR CHARACTERS?”
  He nearly killed Goku! But I dig that kind of reverence and inspiration. So Nami’s backstory — it’s heart-wrenching. Bellemere’s awesome. Makes you wish she was still around in the series.
  Isn’t that perfect? That’s exactly what he goes for.
  In the end, she refuses to say that she doesn’t have children, even after a bad spat with Nami. This flashback is one of my favorite ones. What did you get out of it and how did it take the story to another level? Because to match it, every flashback to come had to do some heavy lifting.
  Every detail in this flashback builds on itself. There’s no excess. And maybe outside of the Chopper backstory, I can’t think of another backstory that is so full of necessary information that weaves into a single narrative. Every event evokes an emotion in the reader and pushes the story forward. Bellemere has the fight with Nami, makes dinner to reconcile with her, a Fishman crew member sees the cooking smoke from her house, the Fishmen find her, she refuses to discount Nami as her family, and she’s killed. It all comes together so neatly in three chapters, I think. Oda sets a reeeeeally high bar for himself, but to be able to match that through nearly a hundred volumes of story takes a special kind of manga genius. It’s also the very first time I cried while reading manga.
  Next, we run through basically a Greatist Hits collection of One Piece moments: Nami asks for help, Luffy gives Nami the hat, the march to Arlong Park, Luffy slugs Arlong, the fights happen, Luffy brings down the Gum Gum Battle Axe, Arlong’s spine gets turned into clam chowder, etc. So much of what we think about One Piece is distilled into the final chapters of Arlong Park. So do you have a favorite moment from this climax? I honestly can’t pick.
Tumblr media
    I didn’t realize this when I first read it, and it took me several years to understand the importance of the giving of the hat. It’s one of only two times in the series that Oda uses five exclamation points in a row. The other one is when Luffy comes swooping in to save Vivi from Crocodile. Even the famous “dreams of mankind will never end” doesn’t get five. Luffy’s pissed and the best part about this is that he doesn’t have a single reason to be. He knows nothing about Nami’s history and actively refuses to listen to it. He takes a nap instead. He’s just ready to be a tool for her, so when she asks him to help her? YOU GOT IT. And then, the next thing he tells her, after the fight with Arlong, he tells her that she’s his crewmate. Nami has held this by herself for so long, she’s so strong, and she finally opens up to accept help from someone else. And it tells us that Luffy knows what kind of person you are, even if he doesn’t know that much about you. He might be dumb and reckless and strong, but there’s a spark there. He can read you.
  One thing I like in the anime is that Nami is the first Straw Hat introduced in the story. She’s at the boat party that gets attacked by Alvida, and her showing up there and then being the main focus of Arlong Park bookends East Blue and kind of turns it into her saga. But as they leave this arc and head to Loguetown, what is new about One Piece? What's there that wasn't around before?
  That’s a good question.
  Because I hear many people say “Arlong Park is what made me a One Piece fan.”
  You get to see their daily routines onboard their full ship. You have the established East Blue crew in one location and we get a slice of life. In just a few scenes or panels, you finally get to watch the crew relax. You get a window on their lives and there’s a sense of completeness. It’s a warm, fuzzy feeling.
Next Chapter: 18
Nami's truck had to have been the smallest little Ford pick-up Sanji had ever seen.
It was older than he was and coated in an ancient, peeling, white matte paint that revealed various rusted spots throughout the truck's body. The bed hardly looked capable enough to transport whatever it was she used it for, as the scarce space it supplied was being threatened by a toolbox Nami had somehow managed to fit in it.
It looked like a piece of junk, but he dare not tell her so.
It was ugly to behold, but sitting in the cab with her made it tolerable.
To a degree.
Inside the two-door cab was a small bench seat that looked like it could barely hold the two people it was designed for. Sanji's legs barely fit in the space between the seat and the dashboard, and the only thing keeping them separated from Nami's was the stick shift transmission that tried to exist between them.
Sitting in the truck was hard, but it was not the cause of the grief he'd suddenly been overcome with when she'd begun to question him.
He stared forlornly at the glove compartment, feeling the heat struggling to come through the air vent and, rather melancholically, wondered if this was the lord of Saturdays' doing.
Just when he'd thought his curse had been lifted, it struck down harder than it ever had before.
Beside him, Nami appeared apologetic, but didn't know what to say to try and make him feel better. She'd invited him to sit in her car with her so they could at least make an attempt to talk about his feelings for Zoro - whatever they may be- a little bit when he'd appeared on the verge of a breakdown after she'd brought it up.
Looking at him now, she felt guilty, and wondered if she should have waited to say anything about it, though, she doubted that a better time would have ever presented itself.
Still. Sanji looked absolutely miserable.
"So…" she began slowly, trying to spur him out of his thoughts so that he might try and explain them to her.
"I'm not gay," he blurted out, frowning. "I've never in my life even thought about being attracted to another man."
"Sexualities aren't set in stone," she said. "They can change."
This seemed to only distress him further.
"So what does that make me now then?" He turned to look at her with a panicked look in his eye. "What happened to make me like this?"
Nami's lips twitched into a frown. She couldn't say she was a fan of his phrasing, but let it slide. Rather than comment on it, she sighed and turned away.
"The only one who knows the answer to that is you, Sanji. Maybe you were always this way, and just hadn't met a guy who peeked your interest 'in that way' until now."
"I don't even know him," Sanji moaned, attempting to slouch in his seat. The dashboard prevented him from slouching, though, and ultimately made him look like a cramped fool. "I've only known the asshole for a week!"
"It only took Romeo and Juliet a day," Nami added in what she hoped was a supportive manner.
"That may be, but that's a fictional love story; that whole love-at-first-sight plot was only meant to expedite the narrative, not, y'know, mimic how this stuff actually works." Exasperated, he tried to find a way to lower the seat so that he could lean back a little bit, but ultimately couldn't find one. "This is reality; that sort of stuff isn't supposed to happen here."
That was true, Nami acquiesced; usually those sorts of things took a bit more time, especially in this day and age.
"I had you pegged as a real life Romeo, you know?" She spoke lightheartedly, attempting to break through his current emotional state with a joke. "You're surprising me right now."
He shrugged and laughed slightly, reaching into his pocket for his cigarettes.
"Sorry to disappoint you, my sweet," he said, a hint of bitterness in his voice. Nami watched him take out a cigarette and put it to his lips before he realized he probably ought to ask. "Do you mind if I-?"
"Go for it."
Nodding his thanks, he cracked the window with the hand-crank and lit up, easily setting into his relaxing habit. Neither of them spoke for a while as he smoked languidly, each of them trying to comprehend his feelings.
On her side of the seat, Nami was locked in a mental debate with herself. There was something she hadn't yet told Sanji, but couldn't figure out if it was something that would benefit him if she were to bring it up. Perhaps it would, but there was always the chance that it would somehow make him feel worse.
Through the windshield they could watch the cars on the main road lazily drive by. She bit her lip and glanced at Sanji again, taking in his unusually depressed demeanor and made a decision.
"Y'know," she began, speaking slowly. She put her hands on the steering wheel and flexed them against the leather. "I kinda get where you're coming from."
"How's that?" Sanji mumbled, listlessly staring at a couple walking by.
Anxiously, she felt her heart rate increase as she said, "Zoro and I used to date."
Sanji blinked and turned to look at her with what appeared to be shock. Nami forced a smile. Somewhere, Zoro sneezed.
"What?" he stammered, cigarette threatening to tumble out of his mouth in surprise. "You- him-?"
"Years ago, yeah," she admit, speaking with a bit more confidence than she actually felt. "Back in high school. It was… not very good, for either of us.
"He'd just broken up with his long-time girlfriend, and I'd had a crush on him for so long-" She had to stop and take a breath to calm herself. Though their relationship had been short, it had been intense, too, and still sometimes took its toll on the both of them to recall what it had meant to them. "And, well, I just couldn't believe he'd date her before me, that I kinda forced it on him when they finally broke up."
Sanji was speechless. His cigarette dangled forgotten on his lips as he listened to Nami's confession. She looked stricken, but was smiling fondly despite the way her voice shook.
"I knew he was on the rebound. He knew it, too, but I still insisted we try. We did our best, but broke up before it got too bad that we'd hate each other afterwards, so, um, I guess what I'm saying is, if you want to try with Zoro, I have experience." She felt her eyes watering up with sentimental tears a little bit and wiped them away, laughing lightly to herself. A huge weight seemed to have lifted from her chest as she spoke. It was so relieving to share, that she hoped she could help to lift whatever weight Sanji was carrying by continuing to talk things out.
"Um," he said, suddenly remembering his cigarette as it nearly fell from his mouth and into his lap. Replacing it, he inhaled deeply and looked out the window before exhaling and turning back to her. "I don't know what to say."
"I'm not looking for sympathy, I'm just trying to tell you that I have experience. You just need to tell me where you want me to apply it."
Looking at her now post-confession, Nami seemed stronger. She shone with a new light in Sanji's eyes; one that made her trustworthy and relateable to him. Determination sparkled in her sweet brown eyes that, under normal circumstances on any other, regular Saturday, would have made his heart skip.
"Is he even- is he even interested in men?" Sanji asked quietly, afraid of the answer being yes or no.
"Zoro's his own thing," Nami reassured him with a bit of a laugh. "He's such a punk that he refuses to label himself, but I can tell you that he's pretty open-minded. He's not attracted to specific genders so much as he's attracted to capable people. He's dated men before."
Capable.
Sanji had heard that from Zoro before somewhere. He just couldn't remember where, or what he'd been talking about when he'd said it.
"Capable people? Capable how?" Sanji found himself asking.
Nami shrugged.
"Usually it's people who can match him in some regard. Strength, wit, etcetera. It impresses him, I think." Taking her hands off the wheel, Nami relaxed back against her seat and closed her eyes briefly. Opening them, she turned to Sanji and smiled warmly. "I can help you, Sanji, and I know you know that I can, but you need to tell me whether or not you plan to pursue something with him so we can give you some kind of peace of mind."
This was the longest week Sanji could remember living, but he was, inwardly, so thankful for Zeff for giving him the time off so he could live it to meet Nami. She was nothing short of god-sent; truly an angel sent to bless him in his time of need. He was about to tell her so when he thought better of it.
For once, he kept himself in check and forced himself to think.
The cigarette he'd been smoking finally reached the filter. Tapping off the ash, he flicked the butt out the window and sighed deeply.
What did he want to do?
Zeff had given him the month off to explore new interests, and Zoro, unfortunately, seemed to be his primary interest as of late. But how would that play out? What would happen when he inevitably had to return to work in, what, 3 weeks' time?
Would it be worth it in the long run if he couldn't guarantee that there'd be anything left between them when it was time for him to return?
"Sanji?" Nami asked, stirring him from his thoughts. "I don't mean to rush you, and I don't need an answer now, but I need to leave soon to get ready-"
"I want to try." Sanji seemed surprised by his own voice, for his eyes widened and he sat up rather quickly, bumping his knees against the dashboard. Nami seemed surprised too, but the shock of it faded fast and was replaced with a big, broad smile.
He felt rather queasy, but if these feelings he seemed to have developed for Zoro were romantic in nature, then what better way to quell or satisfy them by at least giving the oaf a try?
Sanji returned Nami's smile weakly, feeling far less confident in his person than he'd had only an hour ago.
"Alright, I'll help walk you through this, but try not to worry too much about it, okay?" she said, reaching over and grasping his arm in support. "It's nothing to lose sleep over, and, hey, if it doesn't work out, at least you'll know, and that's a hell of a lot better than not knowing."
"Yeah." Agreeing, his hands fumbled out another cigarette for him to light, He took a quick, shuddering whiff before he regained some of his resolve and could muster an honest, heartfelt smile. "Thank you for this."
"Don't mention it," Nami said, taking her hand away and replacing it on the wheel. "But, like I said; I have to go. We can talk about this some more later."
She gave him an apologetic look as he quietly said "Oh," and opened the passenger door. He slid out and shut it behind him, returning her wave when she sent one his way.
"Talk to you later!" she said cheerfully through the crack he'd left in the window before backing up and pulling out of the lot, driving away as he stood alone on the pavement, smoking.
Waves of anxiety were rolling through his stomach and were beginning to make him feel ill. He forcefully reminded himself that what Nami had said earlier was true, and nothing was set in stone. If, later, he didn't feel like he wanted anything more to do with Zoro, then that was okay.
He was going to be alright, regardless of what happened between them; after all, Zoro had only been a part of his life for a week. They never need interact again if it didn't work out.
With that thought in mind, he felt a bitter sort of relief manifest itself as he returned to his car and drove back to his apartment.
As he walked through his front door he sighed heavily and removed his coat and made to hang it in the small closet that was positioned near the door.
Being in the comfort of his own apartment, Sanji did begin to feel better and almost felt foolish for being as distressed as he had been earlier. Wandering into the living room, the smile he'd allowed himself fell away when he heard the familiar sound of Zoro's motorcycle engine pulling into the parking lot.
He froze and listened to him as he let it idle, turning to look out the window that allowed him a view of the lot. As he watched, he saw Zoro finally cut the engine and take off his helmet, and even at a distance, he could see that the biker looked pissed off about something.
'Shit,' he thought, panic rising up from the dredges of his stomach to cloud his mind. Had Nami said something to Zoro?
No, there was no way- he trusted her, and she didn't seem the type to do something like that.
Then again, he'd known her less than he'd known Zoro. Could he really be sure-
Zoro was moving again, dismounting his motorcycle and pulling the guitar case off his back and then turned to stare directly at Sanji through the window. They both appeared surprised in that moment as they made eye contact, the two of them momentarily stunned until Zoro pointed, first at himself, and then at him.
Sanji didn't know what it meant, but he nodded, and watched Zoro turn away so that he could enter the building.
A loud, strong knock on his door told him that Zoro's vague pointing meant that he'd wanted to talk. Swallowing dryly, he shoved his anxieties aside and took a deep, calming breath before he went to answer it.
He forced an annoyed expression on to his face as he greeted Zoro, saying, "What do you want, asshole?"
Zoro rolled his eyes, but the pissed off expression he'd had in the parking lot had returned. Sanji ignored the creeping feeling of his insecurities trying to slowly overtake him again and noticed that the guitar Zoro was carrying was suddenly being shoved into his hands.
"What? What's this for-?" he began to stammer, struggling to hold onto the bass guitar case that had been rudely passed to him.
"If you so much as leave a scratch in the finish, I'll kill you," Zoro growled, putting his helmet on the ground to pull out a cd case he'd been keeping in his leather jacket. He handed it to Sanji who took it, appearing confused, and reached down to pick his helmet up again.
"That," he said, pointing to the cd case. "Is the mixtape I told you I was going to make. Listen to it. Find something you like. And that," he repeated, this time pointing to the guitar case. "Is Shusui. You told me you didn't have anything to practice at home with, so, practice with that."
Baffled by the sudden gifts, Sanji could only open and shut his mouth, unsure of how to thank him. Zoro seemed to be waiting for him to say something as he stood there, still looking angry about loaning him one of his best guitars.
"Okay," Sanji finally said, flipping the cd case over in his hand to see if the back had a track listing. It didn't.
Zoro frowned, but seemed satisfied enough with his reply. Without a word, he turned away, walking up the stairs to his floor. Sanji stood there for a second, listening to him ascend as attempted to process the sudden generosity Zoro had shown him. Shaking himself from his stupor, he retreated back into his apartment, shutting and locking his door behind him.
He took the guitar and the cd into the living room and sat down on his couch, carefully setting the guitar case on the floor and placing the cd on his coffee table.
"Holy shit," Sanji whispered under his breath, staring baffled at the gifts.
Zoro had remembered he didn't have any instruments at home to practice with. He'd loaned him one from his personal collection so that he could. He was actually invested in Sanji learning.
Realizing that Zoro genuinely wanted to help him learn made Sanji smile, but rather than dwell on the good feelings for too long, he stood up and grabbed the mixtape. Popping the cd out of its case, Sanji made his way over to where he'd last used his laptop and prepared to immerse himself in the music that shaped Zoro's life.
