Where are all the jolly tars that crewed the Agamemnon? Men for whom the carronades were less hard work than play. Oak and iron and blood were they, and every girl a darling. Sink them in their hammocks, lads, they've gone far away.

5 tips on beta reading and being respectful in the process (from a beta reader)
disclaimer: none of us are perfect. Some of these tips come from things I have done in the past and learned from, and some are things that I’ve seen other beta readers doing that I, as someone who is also an author, would like people to keep in mind. we’re all learning together — and these are just a handful of things that I try to keep in mind as I’m going
1. Communicate with your author! This includes but is not limited to:
Your availability to beta read
The timeline on which the author would like it to be done
The areas in which you’re willing to help, and the areas in which the author is looking for help (don’t offer advice in an area that they don’t want advice. Some authors only want help in one specific area, while others would like advice all-around)
Things you are and are not comfortable reading
2. Be honest but not brutal. Don’t say anything to your author that you wouldn’t want someone else to say to you
In other words, if it would hurt your feelings, then it will probably hurt someone else’s
One tip to remain respectful of people’s feelings that I learned from one of my writing classes is to word notes differently. Speak of what the fic (or any work) could do better or did well rather than what the author could do better or did well.
3. Similarly, don’t overstep your boundaries .
Typos and the use of wrong words can be funny sometimes! Most people are okay with joking about them, but it can get annoying or even degrading if those jokes begin to occur more occasionally than conversations about things the author has done well. Especially if the author is a non-native speaker, harping on the use of a wrong word or phrase can take a toll on their confidence to write in their non-native language.
4. Do not treat the fic as if it is your own
Your suggestions remain suggestions. Remember that at the end of the day, the author has the discretion to accept them or not, and it’s not the place of the beta reader to be mad about the authors decisions
Remember that every author has their own writing style, and that that style may be different from the beta’s own preferences. That doesn’t give a beta permission to change the writing style to their own.
5. Be respectful of everyone involved with the creative process.
Many times, a person may have more than one beta, a beta and a brit picker, etc/ any combination of those. In this case, it’s important to remember that one beta’s opinion is not the only one contributing to the project. Everyone should always feel like their opinion is valued, and one person should not always have the final say (unless that person is the author).
But most of all, remember that everything, from writing to beta reading to posting is supposed to be fun. These are hobbies that we partake in using our own free time and when it starts to feel like a chore, don’t be afraid to take a step away. Most of us have been there ourselves and will understand more than anything.

And the most hilarious thing is that this is really outside of any of those royal reporters and royal fans' brains. They keep whining about how Harry and Meghan are Hollywood famewhores when they're anything but that, but they're just too dumb to understand the moves they are making. Meanwhile, Harry and Meghan are partnering and making connections with experts and people who actually know what they're doing to try making the world a better place while also securing their own bag. (2/2)
Yep. That’s the difference between actually wanting to use your platform make a difference and just wanting to look like you are doing something

Sometimes that capitalist propaganda is so ingrained that you tell your friend, "Yah, I'm pretty well off. I have a roof over my head."
And he has to respond, "You ever had to have sleep for dinner?"
"Yah? What about it?"
"Sweetie. Well off people never had to worry about that."

9/9/2021, An Entry
Sometimes when I smoke I feel like a dragon. One of those ancient beings of legend that had been full of memories and grudges, that were masters of the skies and themselves. Like that smoke was bubbling up from a place way up inside me, untouched by others, unreachable by man, and carrying every lingering bit of anger and hatred that festered there.
Other times I feel like a writer; one of those stereotypical, depressed, caffeine and nicotine ridden beasts, spines and fingers hunched over the steady click-click of a keyboard. Minus, of course, the poor aspect Hollywood loves to underline so much. I learned very quickly that I don't have the stomach to endure poverty anymore, not like I did when I was younger at least. Starving, sure. But the absence of money carries a weight that I cannot bear. I recognized that after getting my first real, well-paying job. The knowledge has chased me since.
Mostly though I feel like a letdown to my young, childhood self who wanted nothing more than to grow up never knowing the addictions my mother exhibited.
On every inhale, I can just barely make out the burning brown eyes staring back, blazing through the scorched, red tobacco, judging me. I try to soothe that foreign self, that blissfully unaware girl. You do not know, I tell her, but you will. You will.
I think I kept smoking, long after that initial first pack had lost its ability to bring that immediate heady lightness, partly because I wanted to see her, to meet that girl I'd once been. That girl and that feeling, of the smoke being inherently mine, hasn't faded, hasn't left me.

I realized last month that I'm polyamorous
I know that I'm somewhere on the aro ace spectrum, because I've rarely formed genuine attraction of either kind towards a real person, only fictional characters and the occasional very close person, which I don't have many of, but I somehow never noticed that I never saw romantic or sexual love or attraction as being exclusive to a partnership, and plenty of my selfships are with multiple characters together.
I really don't know how I overlooked this before, but it's probably just because it always seemed normal to me (and it is), even growing up, so I guess now is a good time to officially recognize it as part of my identity.
I know this isn't related to any of characters I post about, but I promise there are a few updated about them on the way! I just thought I'd share.
