Read on A03: here.
Summary: Gale and Astarion had struck up a friendship after a failed night of romance. Now, with the Netherbrain fight around the corner, Gale finds his heart still aches to give Astarion any scrap of happiness he can offer. This is a story about a man made of failures and hunger, trying to be a good friend. It begins with a steak. And ends with this most delicious second course.
With thanks: To my dear friend @lumienyx, who is frankly encouraging my bullshit at an alarming rate. And to the lovely @tragedybunny who hunted down the typos and errors on this like Tara feasting on pigeons.Ā
ā€¢ćƒ»ćƒ»ćƒ»ā—‰ćƒ»ćƒ»ćƒ»ā€¢
Gale rummaged through the spice cabinet of the Inn. He was pleased to see that the cook, who had allowed him to slip her a few gold coins for access and privacy, had managed to craft a solid selection. The sprig rosemary seemed a touch too on the nose, so he grabbed a little bundle of thyme instead- striping it into the butter as the filet sizzled in the cast iron skillet.
It was a delicate process, mainly because he was aiming for as close to rare as humanly possible to achieve. It didnā€™t give him much time to develop a proper crust, but as Gale spooned the butter back onto the filet, he also pulled from the Weave. Perhaps he asked more than normally would be needed for a simple cantrip. But he needed to infuse all the wonderful things Astarion deserved to taste in it.Ā
Astarion meandered in a few moments later, when Gale had plated it and was intensely overseeing the food resting as if he could personally will it to perfection.Ā
The vampire gave a sharp tut after observing the scene, perhaps annoyed his entrance hadnā€™t been noted.Ā
ā€œWhen you said you had a surprise for me to try, darling, I assumed it would be something that would make me interested in swallowing,ā€ the vampire finally said to announce his presence.Ā Ā
Gale looked up brightly at where the playful swatting came from, a warm smile breaking onto his face. He laid the best knife and fork he could find near the plate and pushed it forward.Ā Ā
ā€œAh, trust me my dear friend,ā€ Gale encouraged. ā€œI do believe I have made some acceptable advances since the last time you tried my cooking.ā€Ā
That had been back when Astarion was still trying to hide what, and more importantly, who he was. Perhaps it had helped in the long run though. It had taught Gale that Astarion could put a wide variety of things in his mouth and pretend to love it. Later, after sampling a decent red Astarion claimed to be vinegar, Gale had come to the quick conclusion that vampirism negatively affected the culinary practice of taste.Ā
The idea was tantalizing to him. In part because no bestiary had even half the details he could observe in a single evening around Astarion. But he also hoped to reach past the honeyed words for the real truth.Ā
He was curious, in particular, about why Astartion still attempted to drink wine. It said something about appetite that felt vaguely nostalgic to Gale.Ā
But then Tav, who had uncritically eaten up Astarionā€™s sweet smiles and words at the party, eagerly indulged in their place of origin first. Gale didn't feel hurt that Astarion preferred someone else's straightforward affection over his own questions. The tadpoles had made their timelines risky and fortune favored the bold.Ā
It was a short thing, in the end though. After one encounter, Tav ultimately found her heart lay more with Karlachā€™s wholesome sweetness. It was better fit for her than wrestling with the delicate halflies that laid nestled to hide half-truths in Astarionā€™s heart. If it had hurt him, the vampire hadnā€™t let on, going back to mulling around the camp with hungry eyes and talking of desires.Ā
And once again, Gale was left turning over the dozens of little curious details about appetite Astarion occasionally dropped; trying to lay them out and find the bigger picture. Gale had been too confident of his ability to uncover that truth once again. Astarionā€™s sudden thrust backing onto the dating scene hadnā€™t struck him as quite so desperate, but a beautiful mystery he alone could solve.
He was grateful his hubris had at least allowed him the chance of friendship with Astarion. Rather than once again stripping him of everything when he inevitably failed. No, he savored the friendship he was allowed. Even if, quietly, his heart still wanted to give Astarion all the beauty his mind could dream of and his hands could weave.Ā
The food was a meager offering, really, but the wizard was happy to see Astarion shrug and sit down to try it.Ā
Maybe it wasnā€™t everything Gale had dreamed of in his books to see a bit of excitement build on the manā€™s face when he delicately sniffed his offering. He was not worthy of giving a thousand days and nights of little pleasures to anyone, it would seem. But, oh, if his heart didnā€™t flutter a bit at how Astarionā€™s eyes widened slightly when he gracefully cut into the steak and a weave-enhanced aroma wafted up.Ā
Gale had truly grown to enjoy his time spent in friendship with the pale elf. He was a stellar, if not acerbic, conversationalist. And the only other person at camp that enjoyed books beyond bawdy romances. Astarion was a person Gale could imagine being around every day for decades without it ever becoming boring. Well, assuming Gale wouldnā€™t be left alone because the vampire wandered off to find more interesting company than a stuffy wizard.Ā
At least for now, sometimes heā€™d say something clever and elicit a sharp grin. Or heā€™d make a genuine offer to want to properly introduce Astarion to Tara once this was all over, and something soft would grow on the manā€™s face before he schooled it away. Hells, even walking around Baldurā€™s Gate and just commenting on architecture with him made Gale desperate to show Astarion Waterdeep.Ā Ā
It was clear his dear friend had a taste for the finer things in life, but had been left starved. Gale wanted to lay out a banquet for him, to hear his commentary and innovate until he found satisfaction. It was a beautiful thought for the future, but that was a thing still being written.Ā
Gale needed to try and take that joy and give it in lump sum, lest the worst happened tomorrow. There were notes in his pack on leads Astarion could begin searching down for help finding a place in the sunlight, that heā€™d entrust to a messenger soon. A desperate letter to his mother, hoping she would extend the clanā€™s aid to his dear friend. A few letters of introduction that Gale prayed would be enough to get Astarion a chance to observe rare books at Candlekeep if he so needed.Ā Ā
In the meantime, Gale had but this moment. Watching Astarion primly take a bite of the filet and chew as if he was a bit out of practice.Ā
This wasnā€™t the first time Gale had cooked something special for someone - he had a sophomoric idea of what facial expressions to expect. Like always, Astarion didnā€™t disappoint though with novelty. There was a strange look on his face; emotions roiling so intensely nothing had a beginning nor end.Ā
ā€œThis is shit,ā€ Astarion eventually hissed.Ā
Gale offered up open palms, apologetic shoulders, and the broken in, embarrassed smile of a man so used to his reach exceeding his grasp in anything that truly mattered.Ā
ā€œIā€™m sorry,ā€ he began. ā€œYou donā€™t have to finish itā€“ā€Ā
Astarion looked him dead in the eye. When he had Gale's full attention, he stabbed the piece of meat like it had been carved from Cazador himself. He brought it to his mouth and bit down. Hard. Hard enough Gale could hear the cutlery screech in protest.Ā
Astarion was a messy eater- a man of singularly devouring hunger. The blood from the filet trickled down his chin, to his chest, marking him temporarily like Galeā€™s own source of perverse appetite.
Gale watched him swallow and ruminate.Ā
ā€œThis tastes like goodbye,ā€ the man drawled, eyes pinning Gale to his spot. ā€œI donā€™t like it.ā€Ā
Gale smiled, trying to ignore the first thing and address only the second.Ā
ā€œWell, sometimes experiments donā€™t always work out,ā€ he began to affably ramble. ā€œI did believe that a few uses of prestidigitation would help overcome your normally exclusively sanguine diet, but I would still appreciate if you could offer some notes-ā€Ā
While Gale had been prattling about cantrips, Astarion had decided to switch from rumination to predation. He had gotten up, head refusing to move as he stalked towards Gale like a cat fixated on a songbird. The vampire pounced, slamming the wizard into the cabinets. All it took was a bold hand wrenching one wrist up above his head and a tongue thrust into his mouth to strip him of his power, his self-image as Gale of Waterdeep.Ā
Astarion devoured Gale Dekariosā€™ mouth, eating up the moans his actions elicited.Ā Ā
After a second or eternity, the poor man wasnā€™t sure which, Astarion broke away to let Gale pant.Ā
ā€œI want seconds,ā€ Astarion commanded, his other hand running down a thigh- barely keeping to a space that wouldnā€™t be scandalous if someone walked in.Ā
Gale tried to master his fluttering heart, to let it accept air and nourishment so it would stop screaming in his chest almost loud enough that it drowned out the orb.Ā
ā€œYou donā€™t,ā€ he gasped, licking his lips before trying again. ā€œYou said you donā€™t do seconds.ā€Ā
That was one of the first, sharp pieces of truth Astarion had flung at him, after their night of gentle love making had cracked through a mask made to suffer only harsh blows.Ā
People donā€™t use me twice, he had lilted in the morning. After he had time to lick the wounds Galeā€™s gentle praise had inflicted and compose himself back to untouchable beauty. Go find someone you can wake up with a thousand times.Ā
That was back when Astarion wasnā€™t sure if he would be free, but Gale was still hopeful a solution was available for his own woes. Now things had changed.Ā
Gale felt the grip on his wrist tighten. Nails that bit into his skin, fearful that without the contact there would be nothing. It was the touch of a man who had rejected the stolen pleasures of ascending, and now wished to ground himself in freely offered affections.Ā
ā€œI didnā€™t want you to die,ā€ Astarion offered quietly as his body screamed in accordance. ā€œBut I am realizing now that not dying is second to living.ā€Ā
Gale wanted to soothe away the worry on the man's face. To cradle the pressed brow gently and let it entrust all its worries to him. But Astarion held him firm. No matter - Gale always had a clever tongue.
"With the number of threats our group has managed to vanquish in the last tenday alone, I think our odds are very good at succeeding, Astarion."
Astarion laughed, letting go of Galeā€™s wrist to poke at the site where the orb marked him. ā€œI know this is your back-up plan, Gale. Maybe youā€™ll blow yourself up if we struggle too much against the Netherbain. Maybe youā€™ll let Mystra own you to remove it. Or sheā€™ll use it as a threat to bargain against your interest in the Crown. But I am tired of petty tyrantsā€™ wants and demands.ā€Ā
ā€œSheā€™s a Goddess, Astarion, itā€™s not remotely-ā€ Gale tried to interject.Ā
Astarion didnā€™t even dignify that with a verbal response. He simply looked at Gale, eyes flickering from where the orb burned him to his own, violently marked neck. Astarion knew what manufactured pain was, appetites unanswered. It was why they spoke so easily, they shared this perverse second language.Ā
ā€œYou deserve a choice too,ā€ Astarion eventually said.Ā
The first kiss in the kitchen was Astarionā€™s - passionate and aggressive to hide the tenderness it came from. The second was Galeā€™s - slow and soft, an adventure that ended with being more daring by the hearth. They werenā€™t so different. Both had left a man gasping for more, a hand traveling to places to hint at encores.Ā
Astarion leaned into the way Galeā€™s fingers gripped his curls, the pad of his thumb ever so slightly brushing against his ear in a way that would barely be considered scandalous if anyone ever came in.Ā
ā€œWhat if I wanted to choose a second Mr. Dekarios?ā€ Gale whispered.Ā
Astarion had a talent for saying one thing, but meaning another. It was intoxicating to Gale. The way he could roll his eyes and bring up a lip in a perfect sneer that to an onlooker signaled disgust embodied, a hint of fang and claws coming out. But oh, if the man wasnā€™t still tender to the touch- a gentle weight that was as inviting as his words were barbed. A secret laid out only for him to discover.
ā€œWell, you should probably get better at cooking, darling. I have no clue how you plan to catch any self-respecting man in your current situation.ā€Ā
His hungry red eyes glanced down to a plate that was empty.Ā
ā€œI, for one, have standards,ā€ Astarion said softly.Ā
Gale was a man of great pride. It was tempting to press back, to needle the vampire. Perhaps to bring a thumb to wipe up the blood that was still shining on his neck and watch the man lick it off before calling him on the falsehood.Ā
But on second thought, Gale also desperately needed to close his eyes and believe in the magic of being allowed this close again. He leaned his brow to Astarionā€™s to give a kiss to the naked skin he found. Not to soothe away the way the vampire had his eyebrows furrowed in concern of being seen. But as a promise he loved this too and wanted it just as much as every other part of him.Ā
ā€œI look forward to learning about every single one, no matter how small or obscure,ā€ he promised. ā€œI will ascribe them upon my heart, and treasure each word as a gift.ā€Ā
Astarion looked at him, searching for the lie. Gale was granted the privilege of watching his eyes grow soft with the knowledge that the wizard was as sincere as he was loquacious.
Then, he had the thrill of watching a vampire who had recently declared he wanted to start living realize he was ravenous.
And that Gale was the perfect second course for this evening and many more to come.Ā

Quirk Oddities: LOV
A/N: Warning, reeeeeeeeeally long post under the cut lol yeet
Gotou Imasuji/Muscular:
You have NO IDEA how happy I am that we F I N A L L Y know this manā€™s name,, anyway
Due to his Quirk having to do with his muscles (and obviously, augmentation of said muscles), heā€™s constantly in danger of muscular dystrophy if he doesnā€™t exercise them enough, even when not tapping into that muscular form.
Also feeds into hisĀ ā€˜blood knightā€™ behavior -- his eternal battle to fight stronger and stronger people and his own fight code matches with his Quirk, which gives him a stronger and stronger physique. Heā€™s literally always itching for a fight.
Needs to eat a lot more than your average person, more on par with someone like Fatgum. Eats a ton of proteins and has a relatively healthy diet compared to a lot of other people. Heā€™s very strict about what he eats so that he can get the maximum amount of energy for his muscled-up form.
Mustard:
His Quirk makes him more quiet and chill than most of the League; due to its somnolent properties (and due to the fact that he likely accidentally exposed himself to it far too often when he was younger), he reserves his energy for when he truly needs it.
As a negative side-effect, however, he suffers from chronic insomnia, which is mostly to blame for his irritability and (relatively) fragile mental state (notĀ ā€˜fragileā€™ as inĀ ā€˜literally an inch away from snappingā€™, but moresoĀ ā€˜this close to mania at all timesā€™.)
Drinks a lot of tea to try and calm himself down in the evenings. Lavender and chamomile are his teas of choice. On the flip side, tends to drink energizing drinks during the day so that he has enough energy to function.
Really prone to emotional lows. If heā€™s not careful, he can fall into depression and can get anxious very easily.
Moonfish:
Eats a ton of meats. Just... raw meats. All the time. Heā€™s incredibly unhealthy. The bloodier the meat, the better. Will not eat anything cooked more than medium.
Will try to bite your arm off if you try to take food away from him. Actually, probably just tries to bite your arm off regardless. Donā€™t feed him unless you have a Quirk to subdue him in like 0.58 seconds.
Has to keep his teeth in pristine condition so that they donā€™t... accidentally break off when heā€™s trying to attack someone. Spends an obsessive amount of time brushing every morning and night. Itā€™s one of the only times you will ever see this man even close to sanity, ironically.
Kenji Hikiishi/Magne:
Used to have to be cautious with using her Quirk when she was younger. Due to her inability to wield it correctly, she ended up magnetizing everything within a 2.5 meter radius. Eventually, she learnt to control it, but this caused some upsets when she was in school and people learned to avoid her if they didnā€™t want to get thrown like a ragdoll.
Very attracted to people. Not in a sexual way, but she loves socializing and can often wander near groups of people without realizing at first.
This isnā€™t an oddity with her body, per se, but she used to constantly be careful about magnets getting stuck to her giant magnet. Itā€™s a pain to pluck them all off, so she eventually just started wrapping it, which negated some of its effects on anything close by.
Itā€™s honestly good that her Quirk doesnā€™t work on herself, for many obvious reasons. When she was a young child in the first years after it manifested, she always questioned it. Now sheā€™s incredibly glad it doesnā€™t, considering how much havoc she could wreck on other people. Instead sheā€™s more in-tune with it, in a sense. She can tell apart red and blueĀ ā€˜magnetsā€™ very easily due to that.
Kurogiri:
Yā€™all donā€™t know how tempted I was to put Oboroā€™s name in there lmao
Constantly has a dark aura around himself that looks like a thin fog. I know, thatā€™s canon, but unlike his actual fog created around his neck, this stays around his actual body shape so that even if the collar is gone and he canā€™t form more fog, the aura would be there enough to obscure some of his more defining features.
Due to him being a literal reanimated corpse, the reason his eyes are glowing and yellow is due to being reanimated. That, and yellow looks cool as hell with black and purple, amirite?
Prefers totally dark rooms. If heā€™s by himself just chilling after a long, hard day of being a babysitter to about 6-9 societal outcasts, heā€™s sitting or lying down, eyes closed, with all of the lights off, just basking in it.
Adding to that last point, enjoys misty, foggy days. He doesnā€™t so much enjoy rain as much as he does the general vibe of a fog-dense area. Really feels at home in it.
His sense of pain is highly muted, and his body is incredibly cold to the touch. I mean, heā€™s literally a reanimated corpse. It takes a lot of force for him to actually feel anything, and this goes for non-pain sensations too. Often loses feeling in his hands and feet and they feel like wisps of mist.
??? Shigaraki/All For One
Due to his Quirkā€™s innate nature of taking and giving, heā€™s a huge kleptomaniac. He just canā€™t resist swiping things (and maybe giving them back later).
Heā€™s drawn to studying Quirks. Like a certain someone else we know, heā€™s obsessed with hashing out the more intimate details of a personā€™s power, and then he can truly decide whether or not heā€™s taking it.
His body is more naturally suited for taking on more than one Quirk at a time, but without his life-support system he would be royally fucked. Many of his Quirks require a lot of energy and his body is just too weak in its current state with all of his injuries to sustain them all. I know, heā€™s still incredibly powerful, but heā€™s consideredĀ ā€˜weakā€™ right now. Imagine him at his peak. How many Quirks did he have? 50? 100? More?
Adding onto his kleptomania, this applies to people too. Heā€™s incredibly possessive of people he deems worthy of his time (his brother and Tomura being two notable examples) and will do whatever it takes to keep them at his side in the name ofĀ ā€˜keeping them safeā€™. If he had a family somewhere and he found out about them, you bet your ass he would go full yandere on them, but isnā€™t hesitant to lay the emotional/mental manipulation on thick.
Tomura Shigaraki:
As Iā€™ve stated a few times before, due to his Quirk, Tomuraā€™s body is constantly destroying itself, from within and outside. His skin is the outward reflection of it; after being found by AFO he was weak and easily sick due to his immune system not fully ready to handle the destructive properties of Decay.
Sometimes heā€™ll choke on debris from his own mouth and throat, as Iā€™ve stated before. Very prone to ulcers and muscular dystrophy, so he has to be careful to exercise just enough that he staves off his body totally shutting down.
Has to be incredibly careful with his diet, because the wrong foods could damage his body more than before. CAN NOT HAVE SPICY/HOT FOODS. His taste buds have already been damaged enough due to forays into it before, and he canā€™t afford to sustain even more damage to his throat.
Has to drink a ton of water, not just to flush down debris in his throat but because heā€™s very prone to having a dry mouth. Part of the reason his voice (well, English Dub voice anyway) is so raspy is because his throat is constantly dry. If he doesnā€™t have enough water, heā€™s prone to bad coughing fits.
His nails are actually quite brittle, and when he scratches his neck he has to be careful not to break them. His lips get chapped easily and will split and bleed unless he lays on some ointment.
AND SPEAKING OF OINTMENT! I know the jokes about him needing moisturizer/Chapstick are hilarious, but Tomura has extremely sensitive skin and can not put on anything that has perfumes of any kind in them, otherwise it triggers a severe reaction and it takes him a while to heal. Thereā€™s a specific brand of ointment that he and Dabi use, and like the flame user he has to be constantly reapplying it during the day, otherwise his skin dries out even more.
Heā€™s drawn to death/destruction, much like Toga is fascinated by blood and death (and birds). Much of the time, he causes said death/destruction. Itā€™s so morbidly fascinating to him and it fills him with a weird sense of pride or calm.
Prefers humid conditions. If itā€™s more arid, he suffers. Canā€™t go out in the sun too much, because he burns very easily (more than Dabi, surprisingly). He likes lukewarm, cloudy weather, and especially autumn (can you guess why?).
Canā€™t do alcohol. Not just that he legally canā€™t drink (I doubt heā€™d give a damn about that), but consuming too much would further damage his body and he canā€™t afford to do anything too reckless.
Himiko Toga:
Her Quirk makes it so that sheā€™s prone to anemia much easier than a normal person. She needs to keep her iron levels up, especially as a teenage girl, so she usually goes for more iron-rich foods (and especially meats). Give her a blood bag and sheā€™ll drink it like a Capri-Sun.
Normally, a person canā€™t ingest much blood through their digestive system, otherwise they get sick. Himiko doesnā€™t have much of a problem, thankfully, but she still has to be careful not to drink too much otherwise she does feel nauseated (kind of like eating too much food will leave you full and vaguely sick).
Like Tomura, sheā€™s fascinated with death, but to a more obsessive degree (given that weā€™ve seen her literally eat a dead bird before). Unlike him, she actively seeks it out, and most often creates death herself.
Jin Bubaigawara/Twice:
Oh boy, what else is there to say that hasnā€™t already been revealed in canon? Iā€™ll try my best to go with headcanon here, but Twice is a complicated person to speculate about given that weā€™ve seen most of everything there is to know.
His body constantly feels like itā€™s about to split apart. Itā€™s not much of a painful feeling as it is an odd sensation. Heā€™s constantly aware of it and it does a toll on his overall mental state Every time he does create clones, the feeling briefly intensifies, and he finds it very hard not to keep splitting.
Needs the suit to feel like heā€™sĀ ā€˜containedā€™ himself, if that makes sense. Like, heā€™s less likely to physically split in half if heā€™s wearing it. That, and of course, needs the suit to keep his crumbling mental state in check.
Atsuhiro Sako/Mr. Compress:
Much like AFO, heā€™s a compulsive kleptomaniac, especially for expensive/shinier things. He just canā€™t help but swipe things up, but if the other members ask for it back, heā€™s generally good about handing it over.
Sometimes is filled with a lot of nervous energy that manifests itself in fidgeting with his marbles. In those periods of time, he feels even stronger compulsions to steal and they mostly go away when he does.
Shuichi Iguchi/Spinner:
Thereā€™s so much to put here. Mainly gecko-related things.
As Iā€™ve stated before, he thrives in hot, humid weather. Loves chilling on sun-warmed rocks the best. SUFFERS in the cold.
Itā€™s a legitimate struggle not to eat worms or bugs whenever he sees a juicy one. When he was a kid, he just ate them whenever, but after being bullied for this compulsion, he tried to stop and eventually just hid it from others.
Sometimes when startled, he might make a chirping noise, much to his irritation. If any other gecko-type people are around, they might chirp back.
Sheds a few times a year on a fairly regular schedule. Gets really uncomfortable and itchy for a bit and gets irritated more easily as he sheds. Once itā€™s over, his mood gets back to normal.
Enjoys dark places to just hide in sometimes. If you canā€™t find him, maybe youā€™ll be able to find him in a dark crevice or a hidden nook or cranny. He feels a degree of safety in spots like this.
As weā€™ve already seen, he can stick to walls. I donā€™t know why, but that just makes me happy for some reason.
Touya Todoroki/Dabi:
Hoo boy. This one is a doozy.
Despite his Quirk, his body is more suited to cold temperatures, as seen in canon. This means he greatly prefers cold conditions and suffers in heat. Heā€™s one of the only ones of the League who can be out in winter weather without bundling up.
Burns extremely easily, especially when it comes to consuming hot/spicy things. If youā€™ve ever burnt your tongue on a hot drink, that happens to him at least 70% of the time, but not just his tongue. His entire throat gets burnt, and it takes a while to recover.
His skin is incredibly sensitive to temperature, and whenever he uses his Quirk too much he burns more and more of it. But due to the large amount of his body thatā€™s burnt and scarred, a lot of his sweat glands donā€™t work properly, and this can overheat him even more. He constantly has to be careful about his internal temperature and often carries a thermos of something cold to help himself cool down. He needs to take colder showers otherwise his wounds get aggravated. It just soaks up the moisture and heā€™s more prone to bleeds.
As Iā€™ve hcā€™ed before, Dabi needs eyedrops. Due to his tearducts being damaged enough so that he canā€™t cry tears (as heā€™s stated himself), much like Aizawa, his eyes get dry and irritated way too easily. He constantly has to be reapplying eyedrops to keep his eyes moist and try to heal some of the damage already done. If he goes for too long without them, heā€™s prone to bleeding, and witnessing this man literally cry blood is viscerally disturbing.
His staples can get easily irritated and due to his fire they stay hot for longer. If heā€™s not careful when dealing with them, heā€™s liable to get burnt worse just from the metal. If heā€™s too rough, they will start bleeding and heā€™ll have to disinfect his wounds yet again.
The purple parts of his body? Third-degree burns. He canā€™t feel a damn thing. Doesnā€™t mean he canā€™t rip and tear, but heā€™s likely not gonna feel it. Heā€™s had to throw away a lot of shirts because the bloodstains were just too hard to get out.
Prefers drinking things to eating things whenever his jaw is sore from his wounds. While he was first healing as a teenager, all he did was drink things until he could reliably work his jaw again. Cold brew and ice-blended coffees are his drink of choice.
Gets sick really easily. Ever since he was a young child, heā€™s been more susceptible to ailments like the flu and needs to constantly keep up his health. His body is weaker than it should be, and that frustrates him a lot. As heā€™s stated in canon himself, he can be easily motion-sick.

What Are the Benefits of Ground Cherries?
If there were a short list of fruits surrounded by confusing, misleading and downright incorrect nomenclature, ground cherries would be on it. There are several reasons for that: They have a long history and are well-traveled over hundreds of years, as they were discovered and propagated in multiple areas of the world.
They're also similar in appearance to the fruit of other plants, so this small, yellow-orange, husk-covered fruit with a store of tiny yellow seeds inside has a plethora of names.
They've been called "uniquely sweet; a mixture of pineapple, strawberry and green grapes ā€” sweet, tart and vaguely tropical."1 Smithsonian may have the best description of ground cherries: They're said to taste "like a cherry tomato injected with mango and pineapple juice, and (look) like an orange pearl encased in a miniature paper lantern."
Equally at home in tropical, subtropical and temperate climates, they're sometimes called cape gooseberries, but the botanical names are slightly different. Because of their early history in Central and South America, they're sometimes referred to as Aztec berry, Inca berry, Peruvian groundcherry and Peruvian cherry.
They've taken on such monikers as aguaymanto in Peru, uvilla in Ecuador and uchuva in Colombia. In Madagascar they're called pok pok; in Hawaii, they're known as poha; and in Egypt, they're harankash.
According to Healthy Steps, ground cherries are not only related to the tomatillo (Physalis philadelphica) and Chinese lantern (Physalis alkekengi), they're also members of the nightshade family of plants. But in spite of the label, they're related to neither gooseberries nor cherries.
If all that is confusing, this might help: The botanical name for ground cherries, the variety native to North America, is Physalis pruinosa, while cape gooseberries, aka Physalis peruviana, are thought to have originated in South America. As Gracelinks observes:
"The two are very, very similar in both appearance and flavor, and in reality, the two names (ground cherries and cape gooseberries) are used interchangeably to refer to the fruit, which is generally yellow-orange, about the size of a large marble and enclosed in a papery husk ā€¦
Cape gooseberries, although native to South America, got their name from the Cape of Good Hope. They were introduced to South Africa in the early 19th century, and quickly became popular there.
From South Africa, the fruit was introduced to Australia and New Zealand. As with the early American pioneer settlers, early European colonists in Australia valued the fruit because it was one of the few fresh fruits available at the time."2
Ground Cherries Can Also Be Good for You
Their appearance as well as their flavor helps differentiate ground cherries from other fruits. Ground cherries (with yet again another descriptive name of "husk cherry") are said to make desserts brighter and add a sweet component to robust meals of meat or vegetables.
In her article referring to ground cherries as "misunderstood neighbors," Liz Granger mentions 70 varieties of Physalis fruits worldwide, and colorfully describes their many culinary aspects:
"Bite into this golden relative of the tomatillo, this berry thing, and taste its jammy insides ā€” the nutty watermelon, the mellow sugar, the dulcet vinegar finish ā€¦ They do sweet; they do savory. Native Americans turned ground cherries into a relish.
A Native American Zuni recipe combines them with onions, chili paste and coriander. The Omaha and other tribes enjoyed them fresh. Homesteaders preferred them with sugar. In sod homes and log cabins, pioneer ladies made ground cherry pie and ground cherry jam."3
But while one might think much of the nutritional value of this fruit must lie in its store of vitamins and minerals, in this case it's actually the phytochemicals. Like the sulforaphane in broccoli and the fisetin found in strawberries, it's in the polyphenols that you'll find the true power of the little-known ground cherry.
For instance, the oil from the fruit is rich in fatty acids, natural antioxidants, carotenoids, phytosterols and such chemical compounds as kaempferol, quercetin and withanolides, which have been found to possess antimicrobial, antitumor, anti-inflammatory and insect repellant properties, as well as hepatoprotective and immunomodulatory activity; glycosides also show anticancer activity.
Another study notes that a specific withanolide compound inhibits the growth of colon cancer cultures, induces cell cycle arrest at low concentrations and apoptosis at higher concentrations, and may have some effect on the prevalence of colon cancer, as well as having growth inhibiting effects on breast cancer cells.4
What Makes Ground Cherries Nutritionally Beneficial?
According to Fruits Info,5 ground cherries contain more vitamin C than oranges. It's important to note that the riper the fruit is, the higher the concentration of beta carotene. The journal International Journal of Food Nutrition and Safety notes that ground cherries (or more specifically, South American-derived cape gooseberries), have been popular as a traditional herb for blood purification and for treating cancer, leukemia, hepatitis and other ailments.
Vitamins and minerals are also plentiful. The five most prominent vitamins are A, C, thiamin, riboflavin and niacin, while significant minerals include calcium, iron, phosphorus and potassium. Then there's protein, which Nutrition Data6 reports is 2.7 grams or 5 percent of the dietary reference intake (DRI) per 1-cup serving. Lose Weight With Us also weighs in:
"Not only is vitamin A good for our eyesight, (it's) believed to inhibit cancer and lower cholesterol. Vitamin C protects us against colds and flu and is thought to lower our blood pressure and protect us from Parkinson's disease.
Niacin or vitamin B3 is well-known for increasing the level of HDL (high density lipoprotein) in our bodies, which in turn is thought to reduce the incidence of heart disease. This fruit also contains pectin, which helps regulate blood sugar."7
Additionally, water and ethanol extracts of P. peruviana, as well as other fruits, were tested to determine phenolic and antioxidant activity, and high levels of radical scavenging activity were found, which positively influenced high blood sugar and hypertension linked to Type 2 diabetes.8 As the International Journal of Food Nutrition and Safety observes:
"P. peruviana have been widely used in folk medicine as anticancer, antimycobacterial, antileukemic, antipyretic, immunomodulatory, and for treating diseases such as malaria, asthma, hepatitis, dermatitis, diuretic and rheumatism ā€¦
The plant is diuretic and juice of its leaves is given in worm and bowel complaints, while heated leaves are applied as a poultice (and) an extract of the leaves shows antibiotic activity against Staphylococcus."9
Propagating, Harvesting and Delicious Experimentation With Ground Cherries
Granger quotes Kathleen Cue, a horticulture associate from the University of Nebraska's Lincoln Extension office, who says early settlers found ground cherries invaluable because unlike many fruits like apples, pears and cherries, they didn't ā€” and still don't ā€” require five years to begin producing fruit; instead, they are easy for home gardeners to "morph from seed to food."
Treated like tomato plants, the seeds can be started indoors six weeks before the last frost before being transplanted into areas of full sun and, similarly, many "volunteer" by reseeding themselves.
It doesn't take long for ground cherry branches, which are faintly purple in color covered with fine hairs, to vine and spread. Under favorable conditions they may reach 6 feet in height, but they also do well when staked.
Although the period of harvest is relatively short, taking place somewhere between midsummer and early fall, the ease of the harvest helps explain how these fruits got their name, as they simply drop to the ground when they're ripe. The fruits continue to ripen, though, so collecting them early is best for flavor and texture.
First, the fruit turns from pale green to an amber or gold color, and indicates ripeness when the husk becomes papery and straw-colored. If they're still green in color, they're not ready yet and will taste bitter. When purchasing ground cherries, note that the outer covering should be intact, which helps them continue to ripen. They can be kept for as long as six months in a well-ventilated storage area, Fruits Info10 notes.
As for making use of your ground cherries in culinary endeavors, both sweet and savory recipes aren't difficult to find, but you don't need to go to a lot of trouble; simply adding them to tossed salads is said to be tasty with goat cheese. A sweet treat might involve adapting a healthy version of this tart recipe from My Three Loves,11 which uses "husk cherries" and plums with slices of ginger, orange and/or lemon zest, stevia (instead of sugar), nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla.
Smithsonian.com12 lists five quite novel ways to prepare them, such as chopping them into a salsa verde concoction with diced red onion and jalapeno, cilantro, lime and sea salt. Or, use them in combination with a relative such as tomatoes. Making a caprese salad is as simple as slicing them onto a platter and adding fresh mozzarella, chiffonaded basil, seasonings and a splash of rice vinegar.
The Kitchn13 passes along the recipe for a tasty salad vinaigrette from a site called Rawmazing.14 Combine the following in your blender or food processor, but note that the salad itself incorporates a cup of ground cherries mixed with cubed jicama, pumpkin seeds and lettuce:
Ingredients
1 cup ground cherries
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
3/4 to 1 tablespoon liquid stevia
1/4 cup organic virgin olive oil
3 tablespoons finely chopped shallots
Himalayan salt and pepper to taste
Caveats for Buying Ground Cherries: Go for Non-GMO
For whatever reason, ground cherries, although native to the continent, are relatively unfamiliar to many people in the U.S., which explains why you're not likely to find them at your local supermarket. You may, however acquire them at farmers markets and heartland fruit and veggie booths.
They're generally sold in their husks. Inside, the fruits are often covered with a fine, slightly sticky coating that should be washed off before eating. But once you try them, it's altogether possible you'll be hooked.
It must be noted that as a nightshade plant alongside relatives like potatoes, tomatoes, bell peppers and eggplant, they may prove to be hard to tolerate for some people.
The unripe fruits of some varieties, particularly the Chinese lantern plant, Granger cautions, have been reported as potentially toxic if too many are ingested. The wisest course with the leaves, stems and husks of nightshades is that they be discarded because they contain the poisonous compound solanine.
But there's something else to consider. Ground cherries may be prolific all over North America, growing in forests and hedgerows, but they're not exempt from efforts to use chemicals such as pesticides and herbicides in their growth. For that reason, search out sources for ground cherries that are free from harmful residue and sprays, which can be dangerous for anyone who ingests them.
Researchers using the gene-editing technology known as CRISPR-Cas9 (clustered regularly interspaced short palindrome repeat), say that while most produce took hundreds of generations to become what they are today, they've been able to circumvent that.
Now, with CRISPR-Cas9, they can "whittle down the domestication process" to a few years, and their first experiment involves ground cherries, which "has everything it takes to become the next strawberry" that's "more suitable for agriculture."
Plant biotechnology expert and one of the developers to make the plants more productive and larger, Joyce Van Eck, says: "With some improvements, maybe it could become a specialty fruit crop."15
But if you're more interested in adding non-GM (genetically modified) ground cherries to your nutritional and culinary repertoire, Seed Savers Exchange is a nonprofit dedicated to the preservation and sharing of heirloom seeds. Granger suggests Aunt Molly's Physalis pruinosa,16 an organic ground cherry variety featured in the organization's current catalog. Planet Natural17 offers heirloom varieties, as does Heirloom Seeds.18
