hey mods! i was wondering if it was at all possible to run another poll on how frequently the events are run in the future sometime— i apologize if i’m incorrect on this, but i don’t remember ever seeing the results posted from the first one, so i was curious to know what they ended up being. i realize another event is about to start, and the ones you have given us this year have been so much fun! i appreciate all the hard work and dedication you’re putting into them, but truth be told i feel that it’s been very difficult to juggle replies when they happen so frequently. skipping them is an option, but it’s disheartening to have to do so when you have characters who need the participation if you’re interested in ranking them up.
this is just a suggestion at the end of the day— i realize i personally am not entitled to something like this if you decide against it, but i thought i would reach out because how myself and few other members seem to have been feeling lately. thank you for your time, and as always, thank you for running such a wonderful group! we appreciate all of you!
Hey anon!
This is a topic that was brought up to us recently and we ended up talking about it, but with all the anniversary stuff we forgot to post our thoughts on it, so we apologize. And so while it's a little delayed we'd like to share what we decided along with our reasoning and a little context regarding why the event schedule currently is what it is.
To begin with: at present we do not plan on changing our event schedule. We polled on frequency just before the summer, and even going into this year we had said we wished to be able to run events more often this year so we plan on continuing to uphold that promise. The last event and the new one were both new just because it was summertime, we'll be going back to reruns in between again after the new event!
If it feels like there are too many events, it may be because of reruns! When we introduced them the intention was that they would be optional for those who hadn't done them, or for those that wished to rank up quicker. The assumption was that if someone had already done the event or didn't have time that they would just skip them since it's rerun content. Unfortunately while we'd like to accommodate everyone regardless of activity levels, when it comes to things like event content it becomes a little impossible for us to do.
Reruns came about in the first place because of the opposite complaint, that events were being run too infrequently and that the ranking up process took too long because of it. It's unfortunately an issue where we're going to have members who have differing opinions on either side, but ultimately we decided we'd rather provide the extra content for the members who want it when those who don't could skip it, rather than provide less content and deprive the members who were eager to participate the chance to do so!
Even if we were to go back to the old event schedule from a couple of years ago where events were two months or more in between, we'd likely have to remove reruns altogether. We wouldn't want to only run six or less events in a year and have half of them be reused content, and this would cause additional issues since the rerun system appears to be very popular with those who weren't able to participate the first time.
That isn't to say that there won't be any changes in the future, though they might not be as extreme as you may be hoping for. For 2024 we will be rerunning the frequency poll, but we won't be going as far as to make them two months apart like the were prior to reruns. We are also discussing alternative solutions that wouldn't involve dramatically changing the schedule as well, but that's more on the table for 2024 at the moment.
In the meantime the best we can suggest is to look at curating your event activity if you feel like you need to participate! Only do one or two event threads per event, for example. It's also absolutely fine to drop old threads now and again, and doing so is a common practice in the group!
Ultimately we understand where you're coming from, but unfortunately the group is big and there are many differing viewpoints on things like this. We do hope with this post that we've helped shed some light on why things are the way they are however!

[RSL] Resurgent Legends: Portalcraft Cards first impressions.
The announcement of Shadowverse Worlds Beyond prompted some questions about the future of Shadowverse. For now, its’s expected for both games to run at the same time from the start of summer 2024, but it’s safe to assume that the original Shadowverse will be getting less and less content with time.
Resurgent Legends introduces the first signs of this: A repeat of the last new year leader skins for the end of year event, a focus on releasing just the skins for the winners of the previous anniversary poll, and, most important, old card art getting re-released in the form of new cards with modern effects. Overall, the whole set feels nostalgic and fresh at the same time.
Portalcraft is no exception, the original playstyle of adding artifacts to the deck is getting more support in this set, but it seems that’s not the only mechanic getting new support. And so, it’s time to read the new additions to the class.
Bronze Cards:
Reboot Button: I remember this card being wonky, but this new version is quite good, it works as a decent starter for the deck, while its eventual transformation choices help to either accelerate the pace, or sustain the player in case of trying a late game victory. 3.5/5
Hall of Monoliths: Are we… are we getting a new way to recover Play Points? If not, this card’s cost is quite high. It’s only decent when playing on curve, it won’t see much play. 1/5
Mia, Winged Puppet: The Second Resurgent card is also lowkey decent, sustaining yourself is less valuable than the self evo but it’s appreciated: even so, it’s not the best evo nor puppet support, but it deserves some testing at least. 2/5
Puppet’s play: Control card, it accelerates your destroyed followers count by a lot with the enhance effect but it’s not good as a turn 6 play unless you’re teching it in Enhance Portal. 3/5
Silver Cards:
Ines, Maiden of Shadows: Oh boi is she back, she still retains a resonance related effect that synergizes great with Artifact portal by tutoring either Retrafia or Agyll. New Artifact staple. 4/5
Holy Biker: Good addition to artifact decks without being broken, it’s a good candidate to see play. 3.5/5
Father of Medicine: Artifact tutor with PP recovery on evo, for three cost I’d rather play some other cards with better evo effects, but it’s not completely unplayable, it’s just that there are better options. 2/5
Gold Cards:
Laser Tyranny: This burn is funnier than Disseminator of Wisdom’s Accelerate, let’s hope Galdr is nowhere to be seen during the next expansion. 3.5/5, it’s good on paper but not a key card.
Death Gunner: Enhance support! Good Enhance support! Sadly, it will be restricted to being 1-of in Enhance portal, but it’s a nice addition nonetheless. 4/5
Legendary Cards:
Electric Rhino: Self cost reduction is always good, the actual value of the card comes in the form of its rhino tokens to enable a burn/control playstyle for artifact portal and a new winning condition for the deck. Obvious staple, seems good enough to put Artifact Decks in high tiers. 5/5
Eon, Destiny’s Hand: Control card, good on paper, destroying our own followers needs a better wincon than Lyelth but this card is a great enabler. 4/5
Overall, these new portalcraft cards push the classic playstyles of artifact and puppets but further testing is required; in the meantime, Artifact seems to have gotten a stronger push, but it might not be enough to topple Machina or Enhance decks. While the meta settles, Portalcraft has 3 (maybe 5?) options to climb, who will be the strongest at the end, and will it be enough to guarantee a tier 1 spot? We’ll see in the next weeks.

British Jews Should Announce They Can't Support Corbyn--or Johnson
This was a piece I initially wrote for publication outside of the blog. It had a tumultuous journey, including being accepted in one newspaper before the editor withdrew the offer an hour later. Most recently, it spent two weeks in limbo after the editor who was considering it solicited the draft ... then immediately went on vacation for a week. When he returned, he promised to get to it "first thing Monday". I never heard from him again. Anyway, the election is tomorrow and there's still no sign that he will get back to me, so you're getting the piece here. It's slightly less timely than I'd like -- though much more timely than if I posted it after election day. * * *
Earlier this month, The Guardian published a letter from twenty-four prominent non-Jewish figures, publicly declaring that they could not support Labour in the next election due to the raging antisemitism that has enveloped the party under Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership.
For the UK’s beleaguered Jewish community, it was a taste of that elusive elixir: solidarity. The knowledge that Jews do not stand alone, that we do have allies, that there are people who will not stand idly by and do nothing as this wave of antisemitism comes bearing down. That the letter’s signatories included figures like Islamophobia watchdog Fiyaz Mughal, who is intimately and painfully aware of the direct dangers a Tory government would do to him and his community, only makes it more powerful. In a very real sense, this is what it means to have true allies.
These past few years have been rough on British Jews, but if there is a silver lining, it is in moments like these: the public witnessing of all those who remain willing to plant their banner and fight antisemitism. The statements of resignation from persons who no longer can associate with a party that has become a force for hatred against the nation’s Jews. The figures—some Jewish (like MP Ruth Smeeth), some not (like London Mayor Sadiq Khan)—still bravely resisting antisemitism from within the party.
And there is grim satisfaction to be taken in Corbyn’s almost comically-high public disapproval ratings—which have reached upwards of 75% in some polls. For this, too, is at least in part a public and visceral repudiation of the brand of antisemitism Corbyn has come to represent.
Yet it is the ironic misery of the Jewish fate that we cannot even take unmediated satisfaction in those rejecting Labour antisemitism. Why? Well, because of the primary alternative to Labour: the Conservative Party, led by Boris Johnson.
The Tories have their own antisemitism problems, although—and as a liberal it pains me to say this—they pale in comparison to those afflicting Labour, at least today. And for me, I’ve probably written more on Labour antisemitism than I have on any other social problem outside of America or Israel.
But if the Tories are not today as antisemitic as is Labour, where the Tories can be aptly compared to Labour is along the axis of racism, Islamophobia and xenophobia. It is fair to say that on those issues, the Conservative Party is institutionally xenophobic in a manner that is on par with Labour’s own institutional antisemitism. Or put differently: Boris Johnson is to Muslims, Blacks, and Asians what Jeremy Corbyn is to Jews.
This is hardly unknown, and the latent nativism of the Conservative Party’s Brexit policy is only the tip of the iceberg. We saw the ugliness of Conservative racism in the Windrush Scandal, where Afro-Caribbean British citizens were harassed, detained, and even deported as part of the Tories’ pledge to create a “hostile environment” for undesired immigrants in the country (notwithstanding the fact that the Windrush Generation consisted of natural-born British subjects). We saw it in the game efforts by Muslim Conservative politicians to draw attention to festering Islamophobia amongst Tory candidates and politicians, and the grinding resistance of the Conservative political leadership to seriously investigate the issue—surely, this resonates with Labour’s own kicking-and-screaming approach to rooting out antisemitism inside its own ranks.
And—like with Corbyn’s Labour party—Tory xenophobia starts right at the top. In 2018, Boris Johnson was slurring Muslim women in Europe as “letter boxes”. Advocates at that time urged then-Prime Minister Theresa May to withdraw Johnson’s whip. She declined. Now he’s Prime Minister. In the meantime, Islamophobic instances in the country surged 375%.
There is a terrible commonality here: the legitimate fears Jews have about a Corbyn-led British government are mirrored by the equally legitimate worries BAMEs (Blacks, Asians, and Minority Ethnics) about the prospect of another term of Conservative rule.
To be clear: the Jewish community has not endorsed these Conservative predations. They are overwhelmingly opposed to Brexit. They have spoken out and stood out against racism, Islamophobia, and xenophobia, and have done so consistently.
But there is another step that has not yet been taken. The Jewish community might return solidarity with solidarity, and write their own letter announcing that they cannot sanction voting for Labour—or the Tories. Twenty-four Jewish luminaries, each pledging that just as Labour’s antisemitism means that they cannot support Labour, Conservative racism and xenophobia preclude them from backing the Tories.
The UK, after all, is not a complete two-party system, and in many constituencies there are very live options that extend beyond Labour and Tory. The resurgent Liberal Democrats, for one, bolstered by refugees repelled by Labour antisemitism or Conservative xenophobia and showing renewed strength particularly in marginal constituencies where Labour is flagging. Regionally, the SNP or Plaid Cymru also are often competitive. Even the Greens, in some locales, are a viable option.
None of these parties are perfect. One does not need to search far to find instances of antisemitism in these other parties, for example, and the Liberal Democrats still have trust to re-earn following their disastrous stint as junior coalition partners to the Tories less than a decade ago.
But imperfections notwithstanding, none of these parties has completely caved to gutter populism in the way that both Labour and Tory have. They are cosmopolitan in orientation. They have faced antisemitism and other forms of prejudice, but they’ve responded decisively to it. They are not perfect, but they are viable choices, in a way that neither the Tories nor Labour can at this point claim to be.
And yet, still this companion letter—rejecting Conservative hatred with the same public moral clarity as The Guardian writers rejected Labour hatred—hasn’t been written. As much as many dislike Conservative politics, as much as many loathe Boris Johnson and the insular nativism he stands for—we have not forthrightly declared that the bigotry of his party is of equal moral weight and equal moral impermissibility at the bigotry of Corbyn’s party. We have not insisted that both be rejected.
Responding to the argument that Labour antisemitism had to be overlooked because of the pressing necessity of avoiding the disasters of a Tory government, the Guardian letter writers asked “Which other community’s concerns are disposable in this way? Who would be next?”
One could perhaps forgive the Windrush Generation for taking a tentative step forward in reply.
So again: why hasn’t that companion letter been written? Why hasn’t there been the declaration that the Windrushers, the migrants, the Muslims—that these community’s concerns are indispensable in the exact same way that the Jewish community’s concerns should (but often are not) be viewed as indispensable? Why has the wonderful solidarity demonstrated by the Guardian letter not been returned in kind?
The most common answer is that as terrible as Johnson is and as repulsive as Tory policies are, only a Conservative majority can guarantee that Corbyn will not become Prime Minister. Even the LibDems might ultimately elect to coalition with Labour if together they’d form a majority (ironically, many left-wing voters who dislike Corbyn but loathe Johnson express the same worry in reverse to explain why they can’t vote LibDem—they’re convinced that Jo Swinson would instead cut a deal to preserve a Conservative majority). As terrible as Johnson is, stopping Corbyn has to be the number one priority for British Jews. And a vote for anyone but the Tory candidates is, ultimately, a vote for Jeremy Corbyn.
Jewish voters who act under this logic, they would say, are by no means endorsing Brexit, which they detest, or xenophobia, which they abhor. They hate these things, genuinely and sincerely. But their hand has been forced. In this moment, they have to look out for Number One.
I understand this logic. I understand why some Jews might believe that in this moment, we cannot spare the luxury of thinking of others.
I understand it. But it is, ultimately, spectacularly short-sighted.
To begin, if we accept that British Jews are justified in voting Tory because we are justified looking out for our own existential self-preservation, then we have to accept that non-Jewish minorities are similarly justified in voting Labour in pursuit of their own communal security and safety. We cannot simultaneously say that our vote for the Tories cannot be construed as an endorsement of Conservative xenophobia but their vote for Labour represents tacit approval of Corbynista antisemitism. Maybe both groups feel their hands are tied; trapped between a bad option and a disastrous one. And so we get one letter from the Chief Rabbi, excoriating Jeremy Corbyn as an “unfit” leader, and another competing letter from the Muslim Council of Britain, bemoaning Conservatives open tolerance of Islamophobia.
But if the Jews reluctantly vote Conservative “in our self-interest” and BAME citizens reluctantly vote Labour “in their self-interest”—well, there are a lot more BAME voters in Britain than there are Jewish voters. So the result would be a massive net gain for Labour. Some pursuit of self-interest.
Meanwhile, those Brits who are neither Jewish nor members of any other minority group are given no guidance by this approach. There is no particular reason, after all, for why they should favor ameliorating Jewish fears of antisemitism over BAME fears of xenophobia. From their vantage point, these issues effectively cancel out, and they are freed to vote without regard to caring about either antisemitism or Islamophobia. At the very moment where these issues have been foregrounded in the British public imagination in an unprecedented way, insisting upon the primacy of pure self-interest would ensure that this attention would be squandered and rendered moot.
Of course, all this does not even contemplate the horrible dilemma imposed upon those persons who are both Jewish and BAME—the Afro-Caribbean Jew, for instance. They are truly being torn asunder, told that no matter how they vote they will be betraying a part of their whole self.
And finally, whatever we can say about the status of Tory antisemitism today, painful experience demonstrates that tides of xenophobia, nativism, and illiberal nationalism reflected in the Conservative Party will always eventually swallow Jews as well. That day will come, and if history is any guide it will come quickly. Jews should think twice and thrice before contemplating giving any succor to that brand of politics, no matter what seductive gestures it makes at us today.
So no—it will not do for Jews to back the Tories out of “self-interest”, for doing so will ultimately fail even in protecting ourselves. Ultimately, the reason that Jews should clearly and vocally reject both Labour and Tory is not sentimentality, but solidarity—solidarity in its truest and most robust sense. There simply are not enough Jews in the United Kingdom to make going it alone a viable strategy. We need allies, and so we need to find a way to respond to the reality of Labour antisemitism in a way that binds us closer to our allies rather than atomizing us apart. The solidarity they showed us must be reciprocated in kind.
If there is one theme I have heard over and over again from UK Jews, it is the fear of becoming “politically homeless”: unable to stomach voting for Tory nativism, unable to countenance backing Labour antisemitism.
But as The Guardian letter demonstrated, Jews still have friends, and allies, and people who will have our backs no matter what. And if you’ve got friends, allies, and people who have your back, what do you do if you’re worried about homelessness?
I’d say, you start building a new house—one with room enough for all of us.

Can Joe Biden ‘heal’ the United States? Political experts disagree
A Trump supporter and an anti-Trump demonstrator shout at one another close to Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington, D.C., Nov. 14, 2020. Roberto Schmidt/AFP through Getty Photos
Editor’s be aware: When Joe Biden turns into president on Jan. 20, 2021, he’ll lead a fractured nation whose political factions are separated by a chasm. In his victory speech, Biden requested Individuals to “come collectively” and “cease treating opponents as enemies.”
Is therapeutic doable between pink America and blue America? We requested consultants on political polarization whether or not Biden’s aim is practical.
Tips on how to thaw enmity and disdain
-Arie W. Kruglanski
The picture of two monolithic cultures at loggerheads, although maybe intuitive and interesting, is a fable that doesn’t maintain up on nearer scrutiny.
As a political psychologist who has investigated radicalization, polarization and populism, I imagine a “two tents” metaphor can be extra correct.
Should you take a look at 2020 election knowledge, you’ll discover each the Trump and Biden camps contained numerous factors of view, pursuits and issues.
Inside the Trump tent had been Republican stalwarts bent on fiscal conservatism but in addition working-class backers of progressive financial insurance policies who supported President Donald Trump for cultural causes and evangelical Christians passionately in opposition to abortion. Current had been white “America First” adherents who had been vociferously anti-immigration however maintain anti-corporation sentiments usually voiced by liberals; Latinos who themselves are immigrants; and African Individuals who noticed pro-business insurance policies as a path to financial development.
Biden’s supporters had been city and suburban dwellers who differed in some ways however shared concern concerning the mishandling of COVID-19. His tent contained centrist Democrats and financial socialists, Black Individuals intent on addressing systemic racism and members of the LGBTQ group defending their rights.
These tents overlap, and plenty of Individuals have walked from one tent to the opposite. Trump received extra Black and Latino votes than any Republican in 60 years. However tens of millions of evangelicals he received in 2016 voted this 12 months for Democrats, together with Biden. There have been notable rifts amongst Republicans, and a big coterie of high-profile GOP occasion members supported Biden.
Throughout the political spectrum, American voters say they need the president to be a uniter fairly than a divider. In October 2020, 89% of Biden backers and 86% of Trump backers mentioned they wished their candidate to handle the wants of all Individuals. They delivered the White Home to Biden, a candidate who emphasised unity over resentments, whereas supporting Republicans in Congress.
Such election outcomes sign that Individuals are proof against both occasion’s domination, which is successfully a name for collaboration. With society shocked by COVID-19 casualties and Trump’s unconventional presidency, the items of the American political puzzle might match collectively in novel methods.
Firming down the rhetoric, resisting extremism, avoiding vindictiveness and stressing pragmatic options can construct up a typical floor that can mend the fraying material of our society.

America’s political divide will probably be very arduous to heal

A counterprotester clashes with a supporter of President Donald Trump at a political rally, Dec. 12, 2020, Olympia, Wash. David Ryder/Getty Photos
In his victory speech, Joe Biden mentioned that partisanship “isn’t resulting from some mysterious power” however “a alternative we make,” asking Individuals to “give one another an opportunity.”
His recommendation for doing that: “pay attention.”
Different political analysts have suggested listening, too, as a strategy to heal America’s divide.
However lack of listening isn’t the issue right here. My analysis on polarization exhibits political divisions have extra to do with adverse emotions towards opponents than with misunderstanding their views. When these emotions are intense, as they’re proper now, listening can really deepen divisions. So when opponents converse, partisans hear solely distortion and hypocrisy.
In consequence, Individuals in the present day see their opponents as untrustworthy, dishonest, unpatriotic, threatening and even dangerous to the nation, in keeping with current polling by the Pew Analysis Heart. Bitter partisanship has rendered Individuals unable to deal with their opponents as democratic companions.
Analysis exhibits that momentary publicity to political messages that barely oppose our personal usually intensifies animosity towards rivals. And when opponents try and right us, we generally double down and escalate. That’s why even fact-checking Trump’s tweets amplifies divisions: When Twitter marks a Trump tweet as deceptive, analysis finds, Republicans develop extra inclined to imagine it, whereas Democrats develop much less inclined.
Listening can heal solely when our divides lie inside democracy’s mutual floor – the essential precept that, regardless of their variations, residents are political equals. In the present day’s bitter partisanship has eroded this mutual floor in the US.
As a way to heal, Individuals should get well the democratic mutual floor. Doing so would require rehabilitating individuals’s views of their fellow residents. That’s, Individuals would want to see different Individuals as individuals first, independently of their partisan affiliation.
This isn’t straightforward. Partisan division is a function of our on a regular basis social environments, with Republicans and Democrats usually residing completely completely different sorts of lives.
If we already outline ourselves and others by way of partisan loyalties, the street to therapeutic doesn’t run via extra political dialogue. As a substitute, Individuals would want to do issues collectively that don’t have anything to do with politics, participating in actions that on no account categorical our partisan loyalties – volunteering with a group group, for instance, or becoming a member of a bowling league.
But alternatives for this type of nonpartisan interplay have dwindled. And the way do you heal a nation via bowling, anyway? You may’t, in fact. In the meantime, all the massive stuff Individuals do as a nation, from voting to elevating households, is tinged with partisanship.
Till we are able to put politics in its proper place – and I can’t fathom when that will probably be – partisan divides will persist.

Prospect of chaos in November grows as coronavirus cases rise and Trump escalates attacks on voting
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In November, this year’s presidential election could be unlike anything the country has seen in at least 20 years, when the results of the 2000 election hinged on paper ballots and hanging chads.
Republicans and Democrats are now preparing for a pitched legal battle over which votes will count and when they should be counted. States are struggling to retrofit their voting process to meet the needs of voters concerned about risking their lives to cast their ballot. And primary elections held so far this summer indicate that November could bring historic turnout, albeit via mail-in ballots — and correspondingly, a lengthy wait for election results.
“When I take a look at many of the problems that have percolated up during the past month or two in primaries, we have four months to solve them,” said Tom Ridge, the former homeland security secretary and Pennsylvania governor who now co-chairs VoteSafe, a bipartisan effort to encourage states to expand absentee voting this year.
But even if those problems are largely resolved, Ridge, a Republican, said that historic levels of absentee voting will mean that election night will not bring the closure Americans have become used to.
“We shouldn’t be so focused on knowing that night. We might, it’s certainly a possibility, but let’s start talking about election week,” Ridge said.
A campaign to undermine faith in elections
Adding to the extraordinary pressures being exerted on American elections is the President himself, who has in recent weeks escalated his attacks against mail-in voting, pointing to a slew of nefarious consequences if more Americans are allowed to cast their ballot by mail.
“The Democrats are also trying to rig the election by sending out tens of millions of mail-in ballots, using the China virus as the excuse for allowing people not to go to the polls,” Trump said at a recent campaign event in Phoenix. “It’s going to be fraud all over the place.
“This will be, in my opinion, the most corrupt election in the history of our country,” he added.
Already, former Vice President Joe Biden is sounding the alarm, warning that Trump’s attacks on voting are laying the groundwork for him to reject the results of the November election if he loses.
“It’s my greatest concern, my single greatest concern,” the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee said last month. “This President is going it try to steal this election.”
Biden has gone further, warning that Trump might refuse to leave office and suggesting that the military could play a role in forcing him to leave if he loses.
The Biden campaign is responding to a more than $20 million effort by the Republican National Committee to combat efforts to expand vote-by-mail with a legal army of their own. The campaign said it would organize 600 lawyers and 10,000 volunteers across the country for their voter protection efforts.
Meantime, the election processes, which differs in every jurisdiction in the country, appears unprepared to instill confidence in the system.
“The one thing we do know is that there is no historical anecdote that speaks to the massive fraud and massive abuse of the system that the President has complained about,” said Ridge. “The one thing we do know is, as a country, we have four months to try to deal with some of these challenges. And the one thing we do know is the President of the United States could take the lead to provide safe and secure options for all of his fellow citizens, rather than running and filing lawsuits.”
A slew of recent primary elections have vividly demonstrated the potential pitfalls Americans face in attempting to vote during this pandemic.
One of the most acute problems: staffing. In Wisconsin, Kentucky, Georgia and elsewhere, election officials have scrambled to find new, younger poll workers to man in-person precincts that previously had relied on older retirees who are now choosing to stay at home because they are at greater risk from the coronavirus.
In North Carolina, state party officials are already recruiting poll workers in a call-to-service.
“Not all heroes wear capes. YOU can be a hero for democracy in 2020!” the solicitation reads.
Ohio election officials recently mused that people who are out of work or those working from home may provide an untapped source of Election Day labor. Election officials are particularly concerned about the prospect that poll workers might abandon their posts at the last minute giving them no time to find replacements.
That scenario played out in Georgia’s recent primary on June 9, which prompted officials in that state to scramble to find new poll workers up until the last weekend before Election Day. In some cases, poll workers showed up at their assigned precinct on election morning only to be abruptly reassigned to another precinct.
And in nearly every primary held since the height of the coronavirus pandemic, the results have taken days or even weeks to finalize. Pennsylvania’s primary, for example, was held on June 7 and, a month later, the results still have not been certified.
Some states do not allow ballots to be counted until polls close. And Democrats and Republicans are locked in legal battles in courts across the country over whether ballots should be counted if they are postmarked by Election Day or received by Election Day, an issue that could have a significant impact on whether hundreds of thousands of mail-in votes are counted.
Voters face life-or-death choices
Trump’s rhetorical bomb throwing against mail-in voting contrasts sharply with the reality faced by voters like 36-year-old Maria Nelson, who was diagnosed with breast cancer 18 months ago and is still undergoing chemotherapy treatments every few weeks. Nelson lives with the fear that she might have to sacrifice her right to vote in order to remain alive for her two young children.
“I knew that I was in a health pool that was at risk,” Nelson told Appradab. “I wouldn’t do anything that would risk my life even further. So that included voting in person for me.”
Nelson requested an absentee ballot in Wisconsin ahead of that state’s April 7 primary, and that’s when her story became emblematic of the chaos that would unfold there and elsewhere in the country. Her ballot came — but on April 8, too late for her to vote.
“This isn’t an easy decision for people,” Nelson said. “Requesting an absentee ballot or having fear of going to vote in person isn’t the easy way out. It’s not being lazy. It’s truly this fear for your health.
“And when you’re a young mother like I am, you just have to look at your children and really say this isn’t a risk that I’m willing to take.”
Wisconsin’s election featured many more reports from voters like Nelson complaining their ballots were never received. And later postal service would reportedly discover boxes of missing ballots that had been delayed or not delivered.
One of those likely belonged to Melody McCurtis, a Wisconsin community organizer who requested an absentee ballot to avoid putting her mother, who lives in her home, and her children at risk.
“Nobody notified me that it wasn’t coming,” McCurtis said. “I’m just like, Where’s my ballot? Where’s my ballot? I tried to call my clerk, no answer. On April 6, I call, and again April 7, they said was nothing you can do or nothing we can do, you have to go to the polls and vote because it’s not coming.”
McCurtis’ ballot never came.
She became one of the many Wisconsin voters who showed up at the polls in person on Election Day and faced massive lines that weren’t socially distanced and became emblematic of a failed execution of an Election Day during a pandemic that is now a warning sign to other states contemplating election changes.
Both Nelson and McCurtis are now plaintiffs in a lawsuit seeking to force Wisconsin to change its election practices, alleging that the state’s mismanagement of its the April 7 primary disenfranchised voters.
A study conducted by Anthony Fowler, a professor at the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago that was submitted as part of the suit, found that voters who had never used absentee ballots before were less likely to vote in the primary. And that in counties with a high incidence of coronavirus cases, turnout was lower than in counties where there had not been confirmed cases.
These problems also affect Black and Hispanic voters acutely. The study found that communities with high Black and Hispanic populations also saw lower voter turnout.
“We were definitely disenfranchised and we’re definitely at risk for that happening again, because COVID-19 is not going away,” said McCurtis, who is Black. “And we see that it’s climbing every day. And I feel like a black, brown and poor communities are at risk of this happening again. And I feel like the powers that be are not taking this seriously enough. They’re not valuing our lives at this point.”

New from Every Movie Has a Lesson by Don Shanahan: EDITORIAL: Lessons on the New Future of Movie Theaters
Tumblr media
Image: pxfuel.com
During this last month or so of our collective national and international quarantine, I’ve been holding the topic of re-opening movie theaters from my usual “What We Learned This Week” columns on the Feelin’ Film podcast for a “Soapbox Special.” There have been so many articles, so many perspectives, and so many rapidly evolving updates and changes that I couldn’t distill them down into one little lesson or column entry.
With several regions of America starting to re-open (including my own state of Illinois and city of Chicago), it was time to get on the stump and arm the cannons. I put some of what follows into spoken word recently on an episode of Mike Crowley’s “You’’ll Probably Agree” podcast, but the issue has grown since then. Click into the multitude of links in the lessons for the deeper referenced stories. They are well worth their reads and your attention. The theme of this all can be summarized as cautiously optimistic.
LESSON #1: WHAT WOULD IT TAKE TO GO BACK TO THEATERS — I’ll open this rant back in late May with polling from Variety. It featured a survey of consumer comfort. Here are some bulleted results in numerical order:
91% requested hand sanitizer stations
90% say the most important factor is a cure for COVID-19.
86% supported limited screenings for cleaning time
75% support employees temperature checks
70% would rather watch a first-run feature at home
61% would feel better about mandatory face coverings
60% support audience temperature checks
47% were comfortable buying concessions
46% were comfortable using public restrooms at theaters
There’s more there in that article, but those were the highlights. Beyond even that poll, you’ve got more and more segments of the population who won’t feel comfortable with any public event, let alone a movie, without a vaccine in place. Putting any number of these initiatives in place would be costly, especially for theater chain companies reeling on the edge of bankruptcy.
LESSON #2: WHAT DOES THAT FUTURE LOOK LIKE — Any of those changes from Lesson #1 would make for a very different setting than the “normal” way we’ve been going to the movies for the last century. Many editorials and articles (Seattle Times in May, Vulture in May, and Quartz in June) have tried to talk that out exhaustively with every guess in the clouds. For example, many of us have embraced reserved seating as a way to select our spots, skip crowds, and guarantee seats even if we walk in last minute to avoid 20 minutes of senseless trailers (I know that’s not just me, *wink*). The activity timeline changes upward if we are to stand in a line for temperature checks and even downward if there are no concession lines or needs anymore, which is a tremendous business hit to the theater chains that have been bolstering their kitchen capabilities and choices beyond candy and popcorn for the better part of the last two decades. The other word in there everyone wants to avoid is “crowds.” Can that be accomplished with roped off sections, skipped seats, or an all-reserved seating model (which some older theaters don’t fully have)? In the meantime, you’ve got companies fumbling financial footballs and poking public outcry bears (bravo Michael Phillips) over requiring or not requiring masks (and reversing courses) and other measures before they even open. Do you really trust them to get all of this right on the first try here in July?
LESSON #3: THE OPTION OF AUTOMATION — Piggybacking off of Lesson #2, one potential solution could be artificial intelligence, as crazy at that sounds. According to Variety in May, some theaters in Korea were considering “contact-free” technology. Theater chain CJ-CGV replaced its human staff with AI robots and automated kiosks for scanning and handling ticket transactions. Concession stands were replaced with app-powered and LED-controlled pick-up/delivery boxes. Leave it to tech-savvy Asia to be the tip of that spear. Could the likes of AMC or Regal pull stuff like that off, again, while teetering on financial failure? How do data-danger-minded consumers feel about that?
LESSON #4: COMPANY SURVIVAL IS PERILOUS — The first three lessons constitute a forecast and some great ideas, but who or what can afford those measures? After months of virtually complete closure, save for some door-front concession hawking, large theater chains, especially AMC (which includes the Carmike brand), are in the financial toilet. Bailouts and loans are hard to come by and “junk” status is hitting stock reports. You even have Amazon interested in gobbling up AMC, which would be quite interesting. It may require a rescue such as that. This peril is international as well with CineEurope reporting a possible $20–31 billion loss for the year. Even reopening isn’t an instant cure. The majority of profits for these companies are dependent on concessions because of the high ticket receipt percentages going back to the studios, a gouge that has been increasing over the years at the high blockbuster level (Thanks, Disney). If the food areas are closed due to viral fears and health code regulations, that destroys earnings. 50% capacities of social-distanced seating doesn’t help theaters either. Even 50% might be optimistic. There are theaters opening at barely 25% capacity.
LESSON #5: “TOO BIG TO FAIL” IS LOOKING FAILURE STRAIGHT IN THE FACE — And with that we reach the studios’ level of wallet hit with an inactive theater distribution market. Even with their demanded big bites of the pie, half-filled (or less) theaters do not help them either. This is especially the case at the blockbuster level. No matter the anticipation demand or potential staying power of a really big hit flick with less competition, it is exponentially harder to recoup $200 million-budgeted tentpoles and their $100+ million marketing campaigns if sizable fractions of the screens holding butts are gone or entire chains are shuttered. That’s why the really big stuff like Tenet, Mulan, Fast 9, No Time to Die, and more are not automatically landing on streaming services or VOD outlets. Even at a Trolls: World Tour-equivalent $20 price tag per rental (and its modest success), those giants cannot recoup those huge red balances versus getting a ticket for every head instead of every household. A little thing like The Lovebirds or Irresistible can land in the green with VOD, but not Wonder Woman or Black Widow. A business with a blockbuster class level of movies that once looked too big to fail making its worldwide billions is now failing because they have no place to go and no one able to come to their shows.
LESSON #6: STUDIOS DID SOME THIS TO THEMSELVES — Believe it or not, the studios have slowly damaged their own theatrical success/potential for years with the incremental shortening of the windows between big-screen premieres and home media release dates. Folks my age remember the months of interminable wait back in the VHS and cable TV eras before streaming services were even a glimmer in someone’s eye. For example, Forrest Gump hit theaters over the July 4th weekend of 1994. It didn’t land on VHS until late April 1995 after a long theatrical run and a winter Oscar bump. After that, it wouldn’t hit paid cable for another bunch of months and then years before basic cable made it “free.” By comparison, Joker opened on the first weekend of October last year, hit store shelves the first weekend of January 2020, and no one cares if it comes to HBO or Showtime because Netflix, Hulu, or VOD is cheaper and better. What used to be six months at the minimum (or even an entire year if you were a Disney release) has shrunk to merely 90 days on average. Sure, both Forrest Gump and Joker raked for their times, but it’s an indictment on patience versus money-grabbing. People that are willing to wait can now weather a pretty comfortable amount of time compared to the past for their 4K players and big-screen TVs in their dens. In our current COVID-19 state, we’ve all got nothing but time on our hands to do just that. Why risk health if personal patience versus some “fear of missing out” can pay one $20–30 digital download/disc price to watch a movie repeatedly instead of hauling the entire family plus concessions once, especially for something they don’t deem “big screen worthy?” The studios trying to keep the buzz constant with shorter waits will now see leverage backfire in favor of the consumer. For a current case of that, just look at Disney/Pixar’s Onward and the mere weeks it took to cave from the VOD rental level to dismissively dishing it to everyone in Disney+. With studios building their own streaming shingles, you’re going to see more of that or see more wins for Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon.
LESSON #7: THE PRICE POINT OF DIGITAL — Let’s go further with the digital wants of consumers versus the new risks and hassles of theaters. Circling back to that opening Variety polling again, remember that 70% would rather watch a first-run feature at home. And that was back in May. Imagine now knocking on the door of Independence Day, no matter how much antsy-pant anticipation and hope is out there. That same Variety polling screened respondents on online pricing with some keen results. It asked how much a “reasonable” price would be to stream top-quality productions in their home. Here are those results in numerical rank:
47%- $10
20%- $20
19%- only if it was free
6%- $30
3%- $40
1%- $50, $60, or $80%
That’s 67% holding firm at $20 or under and studios need to do their own projections of math. Regardless, welcome to a more than a little bit of the #firstworldproblems portion of this entire “Soapbox Special.” Movies are wants, not needs, period. They are lovely fulfillment, but non-essential. For every one of those 6% hardcore FilmBros and cinephiles with the disposable income to drop $40 or more to see their precious Christopher Nolan film, over 95% aren’t budging or can’t afford it. Check your privilege.
LESSON #8: ADAPT OR DIE — One way or another, change is needed at the highest level that trickles down to every screen in America. A popular industry that has weathered the advent of television, cable, and now streaming opponents and competition in its century of existence should be able to survive this. Or can they? With the Paramount Accords lapsed, is it time for studios to buy or build their own sustainable theaters to show off their own wares and keep all the profits they used to share with the chains? If studios instead mine the digital landscape successfully, do we really need multiplexes anymore? That is a question posed recently in The New Yorker by Richard Brody in a good read. They’ll need smaller budgeted films to do that, scaling so many things down. Go back to the roots. You can make a dozen solid indies or five or more star-driven mid-budget programmers like the industry used to do in the 1990s with the cost of a single MCU film. Reverting back to that level of business would require some baths and haircuts, but it would rescue the industry. It’s time to embrace those needs. In another angle, columnist Nick Clement on Back to Movies says the film industry is “f — ked.” In many respects, I highly agree with him and his fantastic stump piece speaking on unemployment and the public state of some of those aforementioned #firstworldproblems. Time and patience are the biggest needs.
LESSON #9: “ABSENCE AWAY MAKES THE HEART GROW FONDER” — I’ve used this lesson before in “What We Learned This Week” and it’s time to end with it again. Shed away all the polling and conjecture. We all know the love for movies is there or we wouldn’t be talking about it. Look at the success of early openings and the lined-around-the-block comeback of drive-in movie theaters. It will be a topsy-turvy year, without question, even with a full return. We’ve had a zero-budget film named Unsubscribe streaking at an empty box office only to be dethroned by revival screenings of Jurassic Park putting it back to #1 in the nation, George Foreman-style, 27 years after it last ruled the multiplexes. If the year ended today, Bad Boys For Life would get the “biggest movie of 2020” championship belt in the record books. Just like Field of Dreams says, “people will come.” They just need to wait. Everyone, for that matter, from the greedy studio execs and sidelined movie stars to the lowly theater ushers and concession stand workers, needs to wait. This has sucked and it will keep on sucking, but the best answer is to wait and get through this better and healthier, personally and financially, than rushing and screwing it all up. The movies will be there. We want all the people to be there too.

Requests (9/29/17)
Hi lovelies! Here are all the requests I’ve gotten since the last time I posted. Thanks for sending them in! :D

I haven't seen any Nicki Minaj in a while. Can you do one with her?
Totes!

Seeing the poll you just put out made me think, could you do a game based around women's wrestlers? There are a lot of really cute ones like Paige, Bayley, Sasha Banks, Becky Lych, and Asuka! If you don't know enough about wrestling to want to though, I totally understand!
It’s less about knowing about wrestling and more I don’t think I know enough women wrestlers to do a game around them. It’s kind of an area I learn more about as I go. So maybe sometime in the future when I know more, but I’m not sure. Sorry. :(

Could you perhaps do a sequal to the neon room. Either continuing the story or expanding on other victims of the room?
I’ve gotten a few requests for a sequel to The Neon Room and while it is on my radar I 1) need to find a some good GIFs to do it & 2) want to make sure I get the story right. You guys REALLY liked The Neon Room and I’m SO happy about that! :D So I don’t want to follow it up with an unworthy sequel, you know? I’m working on it, let’s say that. :)

Could you do a sequel to "Not in the Mood?" where Hayley II starts rebelling against Hayley and decides she doesn't like being Hayley's slave so she leaves and starts her own band giving herself a different name, but after a while, she decides that she gets tired of going out on stage every night and doesn't always feel like it just like the first Hayley, so she finds another guy to make just like her and go out on stage as her when she doesn't want to.
I can definitely do a sequel to “Not in the Mood”, but the story might not be EXACTLY like this. Definitely going to be inspired by this though. ;)

Hi, :) I know you get so many requests but I figured it would not hurt to ask. Could you possibly do a caption with an over the top super pretty salon theme. I know that sounds silly but I just love you captions and a serious salon theme would be incredible. Thank you so much for all of your crazy hard work.
I’ll see if I can’t figure this out. In the meantime, you might want to check out my Sissy Salon game. You might like it! :)

Could you do a caption where a guy wakes up as Lacey Chabert, and he's a total bimbo and he finds out he's just a plaything to a girl he used to bully?
Absolutely! :D

Could you do a femdom like caption with Natalie dormer? She has some great pics out there!
I think so, just gotta find a good pic of her with another celeb so she can feminize some poor boi. ;)

Could you do one where a guy named Joey is turned into an extremely slutty and feminine version of Kaley Cuoco?
I’ll have to make sure there’s enough space between this and the Kaley Cuoco cap I mentioned above, but sure! :)

May be to sensitive I don't know so I'll give another option as well. Think you could do a caption where some mean boy makes a comment about Mariah Carey's weight so she decides to make him her fat little sissy, that's obedient to her and that's willing to do anything she asks for another bite? Other option a boy peeps on Mariah and she decides to feminize him into the most obedient girly boi you've ever seen who is just embarassed at his situation but more afraid of "Momma" Mariah
I’ll do the second one if I can find a good image of Mariah Carey with another celeb, but I’m not going to do the first one. I know for me as a sissy I have some body image issues & I’m guessing other sissies/tgirls might too so I try to avoid that in my work. But I’ll give the second one a shot.

Please can you do another caption with Taylor Swift about a boy called Zac who gets made into a sissy called Zoe? xx
Sure! :D

Wouldn't mind a caption with Megan Fox. There's this one pic of here in stockings and a white shirt on a bed. Thought maybe, the boy was an arrogant young CEO and a very attractive woman wanted a position he wanted sex in exchange so she turned him into a nympho who wants nothing more than to please her new mistress.
I like the idea and I’ll try to find the image, but if I can’t I’ll still do this with a different Megan Fox pic. :)

Could you do a caption with Demi Lovato in her Dorothy halloween costume? I was thinking some mean boi teased her so she decided to hypnotize him dress him up and send him to Taylor Swifts House on a long humiliating walk. Where he can barely fight the thoughts to want to worship Taylor and Demi
I don’t know if I’ll include the Taylor Swift aspect, but I’m 100% planning on using Demi as Dorothy for an upcoming Halloween cap. Hopefully you’ll like it. ;)

Have you done any feminisation with Hayley Williams she has a lot of nice outfits
I’ve got a few and I’m doing at least one more cumming up. If you’re ever curious about a celebrity, all my posts are tagged with the celebs involved so you can look them up. :)

Canadians are hopping mad about Trump’s drug importation plan. Some of them are trying to stop it
Canadians are furious about the Trump administration’s plan to import their prescription drugs. And some of them are determined to stop the proposal in its tracks.
Trump’s plan, which was announced late last month, would allow states, wholesalers, and pharmacies to import cheaper drugs from Canada. It’s a long way off from being implemented, but Canadians are baffled that America would look north to lower its own drug prices, and indignant that such a plan could exacerbate an already pressing drug shortage issue plaguing the country.
“You are coming as Americans to poach our drug supply, and I don’t have any polite words for that,” said Amir Attaran, a professor at the University of Ottawa, who calls the plan “deplorable” and “atrociously unethical.” “Our drugs are not for you, period.”
In the face of opposition, Canada’s health minister will meet Monday with pharmacists, patients, and industry officials to discuss a response. The minister, Ginette Petitpas Taylor, has publicly pledged to “ensure there are no adverse effects to the supply or cost of prescription drugs in Canada.”
For the advocates likely to fill the room, that means stopping American businesses from importing Canadian drugs.
“It’s time for it to crash and burn,” said John Adams, the board chair of the Best Medicines Coalition, a coalition of Canadian patient advocacy organizations, who will be joining the meeting by phone. “Canadians may die.”
The meeting will almost certainly be just a first step in a long and complicated process potentially involving obscure trade laws, international treaties, and some cutthroat diplomacy.
In advance of that meeting, STAT spoke with nearly a dozen trade and health policy experts in Canada and the U.S. to determine how, exactly, Canadians could thwart Trump’s plan — and how drug makers might just thwart it for them. Here’s what we learned.
Adding pharmaceuticals to Canada’s export control list
The most expedient way for Canada to stop Trump’s plan would be to put prescription drugs on its “export control list,” a watchlist of sorts that would require exporters get permission from Canada before shipping drugs across borders, multiple experts told STAT.
It’s an odd proposition, to be sure. The list is used primarily to prevent export of deadly weapons. Canada has, however, used the list to protect key products, including certain lumber, and even peanut butter.
The process is relatively simple: Canada’s federal cabinet, known as the Governor in Council, can add goods to the export control list at any time. There are some limits on what goods can go on the list, but the government essentially has carte blanche to protect any good against the possibility of shortages, particularly if it can make the case that doing so is in the interest of national defense. The cabinet is technically required to open any such proposal for public comment, but the government has the power to bypass those rules.
“Putting a particular good on the export control list is relatively quick and easy,” Geoffrey C. Kubrick, a partner at the Canadian law firm McMillan, told STAT.
Passing a new law
While Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government has unilateral power to control exports, Parliament could also pass a law explicitly banning exports of drugs meant for Canadians.
It’s not uncommon for Parliament to do so, even when the cabinet has the power to act unilaterally.
“Sometimes legislative actions are taken for the demonstration effect, just so it’s really, really clear that this is not an activity that Canada is in any way sanctioning,” said Laura Dawson, who heads the Canada Institute at the Wilson Center in Washington.
And veteran MPs are already familiar with this issue: Parliament nearly passed a similar law in 2005 after the U.S. Congress passed a law two years earlier giving the secretary of health and human services the power to greenlight drug importation. That bill would have empowered Canada’s health minister to “prohibit, by order, the export of a drug or class of drugs” if the government determined such exports could lead to a drug shortage.
The proposal was eventually tabled because the ruling party lost power and Parliament dissolved.
There’s a major roadblock to passing a similar bill in the coming months, however: Parliament is out of session and the country is in the midst of a federal election. Members of the left-flank New Democratic Party have criticized the ruling Liberal coalition for a lackluster response and called for the legislature to reconvene to address the issue, and the opposition Conservative Party has called for the federal government to act to prevent drug shortages.
Advocates like the Best Medicines Coalition have also called for an emergency session of Parliament, but that option seems unlikely.
Imposing new tariffs or taxes on drugs
Canada could also impose an additional fee — essentially a tariff —  on exports of pharmaceuticals from Canada, thus making the drugs prohibitively expensive for Americans.
“It would be easy for other countries to stop this with tariffs,” said Dr. Bob Kocher, a former special assistant to President Obama and a venture capitalist. “The U.S. has certainly broken the glass already on using tariffs to protect local markets.”
But the Wilson Center’s Dawson isn’t so sure that’s a great idea, or even possible. These sorts of taxes, for one, are very unwieldy and nobody uses them, she told STAT.
“Why would you want to use the least efficient instrument to block these sales, when Canada could simply impose an export control?” she asked. “They could put those spike belts across the highway for trucks that have pharmaceuticals in them … but not so efficient.”
Asked if there was a precedent for such a move, the closest example Canada trade experts could point to was Canada’s restrictions on exports of certain lumbers. As part of a long-simmering trade dispute, Canada has at times required exporters to pay a tax when exporting lumber to the U.S. However, even that is an imperfect corollary.
The wait-and-see approach
Steve Morgan, a professor at the University of British Columbia, predicts at least in the short term Canada’s strategy will be “watchful waiting.”
The reasoning: Even if the U.S. moves forward with its plan and Canada doesn’t respond, existing contracts and business practices make it almost impossible to send prescription drugs across the border. Attempts to do so, experts said, could result in drug companies canceling contracts with wholesalers, wholesalers canceling contracts with pharmacies, and pharmacists being called before professional review boards.
While importation is popular with American consumers (a recent poll found that 80% of Americans surveyed liked the idea), the success of the plan will largely depend on the willingness of wholesalers, both in the U.S. and Canada, as well as retailers, to play ball.
Wholesalers, in particular, would have to decide it’s in their best interest to break or renegotiate contracts with pharmaceutical companies that often expressly ban the export of drugs sold for Canadian consumption, and the sales of drugs in the U.S. that weren’t originally packaged for the U.S. market.
“The reason they do this is because there’s a big difference in the wholesale price of a drug outside of the U.S. versus inside of the U.S.,” said Neeraj Sood, a professor at the University of Southern California, who studies the drug supply chain. “It’s written to prevent importation.”
Sood added that such provisions are commonplace.
Wholesalers who have been accused of breaking these contracts have ended up in court, according to Sood, who disclosed he was involved in one such case, although he declined to provide STAT with further details.
And early signs show wholesalers are  less than eager to renegotiate these contracts: The Healthcare Distribution Alliance, the U.S. lobby group representing distributors, has called Trump’s plan “simply not worth the risk.”
Then there’s the possibility that the threat of importation will give states, wholesalers, and pharmacists the leverage to negotiate better terms with manufacturers, making it unlikely they’d need to import drugs in the first place.
“My suspicion is in the short term … it gives the retail sector greater leverage in trying to negotiate some kind of better terms of trade with manufacturers,” Morgan said.
There’s already early signs this is occurring.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, for example, has said drug makers approached his office after it began pushing an importation bill with offers to sell drugs at a cheaper price.
Morgan said: “It’s premature to panic.”
In the meantime, that won’t stop Canadians from grousing over the prospect Americans creeping across the border and taking their cheap drugs.
“There is no Canadian constituency for this,” the Wilson Center’s Dawson said.
Canada’s major newspapers have been peppered in recent weeks with editorials slamming the plan. “Donald Trump, keep your hands off our drugs,” the Globe and Mail wrote.
“Welcome,” the paper added, “to the socialist paradise of Canada, Mr. Trump.”

If you don’t like Trump then you probably won’t like me shirt
Picturestees - United States POD T shirt If you don’t like Trump then you probably won’t like me shirt
I am a Trump supporter. If you don’t like Trump then you probably won’t like me and I’m ok with that shirt.  You can accuse me of going anonymous and while it is definitely a valid statement I can remind you that the voting process is anonymous. With that being said, Trump has claimed some horrible reports, he has informed us many times that he wants to build a wall or screen/ban Muslims. Fortunately, for us, the Govt of the United States is made up of 3 parts not just Trump. And so while part of what he might want to achieve can pass. It will be overshadowed by over 1000 eyes. Incompetent eyes, but no less eye. Trump is strong. An aggressive alpha male who speaks down to his beta. And directs his conversations with his dramatic and constant whisper.
Why should we support Trump?
He does not play fair and he does not play well, he does not use the appropriate terminology. Or defends his claims in hopes of re-election. I see a person like this very attractive because I need to constantly monitor what I’m saying. We have spent the past 8 years with Obama using a gentle hand to seduce our house and Senate on passing bills in a reasonable time. In the meantime. T-shirt design near me. We hardly scratch our debt, which continues to grow. And neither the Democratic or the Republican senators will move on budget cuts. Trump does not know much about international affairs and this scared me. At least we know that he does not know much and so he can rely on his advisors and task forces to help him.
If you don’t like Trump then you probably won’t like me and I’m ok with that shirt, v-neck t-shirt, ladies tee
We make a decision. Like Bernie, If you don’t like Trump then you probably won’t like me and I’m ok with that shirt. Trump admitted when he did not know the answer to the question. But he informed us that he would try to find more information and get answers later. Is it perfect, no, but it’s a hell of a lot better than providing a half ass answer as many politicians do these days? Trump also appealed to me because he had a moderate view on abortion. At my option, he only advocated anti-abortion views to deal with republics. The party leaders are hell-bent on getting Cruz to be elected despite the majority voting for Trump. The fact is that the Republican Party will spend a fortune on negative TV commercials because polls that do not fit their agenda.

V-neck
In the group. In my choice, it is equivalent to a rogue gov’t do research. And then use targeted advertising (propaganda) to change people’s preferences, many reminiscent? I do not know about Trump and legalization, although it is less important as I believe it will be legalized nationwide by 2026. Trump is likely to cut health care for everyone, while This disappoints me, if we can fix it, I will be a happy voter. Trump is not a successful businessman. He has filed for bankruptcy many times. “You are certainly correct that you have filed for bankruptcy, two of the bankruptcies have to do with overdue payments and overdue debts.” We have forgotten that the US needs to rescue AIG in The number of other large companies. In an effort to float the market to minimize losses after our housing bubble appeared.
If you don’t like Trump then you probably won’t like me and I’m ok with that  sweater, hoodie, and long sleeve

Because we took out huge loans that we thought we can pay back. If you don’t like Trump then you probably won’t like me and I’m ok with that shirt. But when it goes sideways, we have to file for bankruptcy. So I think it is safe to say that we are not the best judges of successful business people. You do not think? He is very anti-war. While he was talking about wanting to bomb ISIS strategically. He against other wars by the Obama administration and Bush began. He resolutely opposed both the Iraq and Libyan wars. As well as the interference against Asaad in Syria. He’s ready to call out the military-industrial complex on his crookedness. And I praise him for that.

What has the best savings account in 2020?
Another year, another search for the best savings account! That's right: It was almost exactly a year ago today that I was hunting for an online savings account so I polled you, the Get Rich Slowly readers.
Last year, Ally Bank was the clear winner. More GRS readers had their money there than anywhere else. But folks also liked Discover Bank, Synchrony Bank, and several others.
This year, it's my girlfriend who is trying to find a better bank. Kim is perfectly happy with Ally — in fact, she's a vocal crusader for Ally, which I find amusing — but at the same time, she's curious if she can find a better interest rate somewhere else.
Seeking the Best Savings Account
After our family financial meeting on Thanksgiving, we agreed to restructure some of how Kim and I handle money together. Since we bought our country cottage in 2017, she's been paying me $500 per month as a way of vesting into the house.
After discussing our goals (both individual and shared), we decided it makes sense for her to stop paying me “rent” so that she can route that money toward other goals instead. Plus, I've refunded the $13,750 she'd already given me. She wants to save all of this money toward the purchase of a second house, a vacation home and/or investment property. To that end, she'd like to find the best online savings account.
What does “best online savings account” mean to Kim? Well, interest rate is important, obviously, but it's not the only thing. She also values ease of use and customer service.
“The only reason I'm looking outside of Ally is because I've seen better interest rates elsewhere,” she told me when I asked her for more info. “I'm looking for alternatives because I want the highest yield. CDs would be okay but their interest rates are no better right now.”
While a high interest rate is important, it's not the only factor in her search. “Honestly, I've considered USAA as well because they're so easy to work with and their customer service is awesome,” Kim says. “I've had twenty years of good experience with them and I trust them. I'm trying to weigh out trust, interest rates, and risk.”
When she left for work this morning, she said, “Can you do some research for me?”
Can I, a personal-finance writer, do some research about savings account interest rates for my girlfriend? Why, of course! I'd be happy to.
Current Top Savings Accounts
The company that used to own this website — with whom I still have a business relationship — has a handy tool that allows folks to look at a lot of today's top online savings accounts. Here are a few of their current top offers:
<!-- function getQueryStringVariable(variable) { var query = window.location.search.substring(1); var vars = query.split('&'); for (var i=0;i<vars.length;i++) { var pair = vars[i].split('='); if (pair[0] == variable) { return pair[1];}}} var ni_ad_client = "640942"; var ni_rp = 7; var ni_amt = 9999; var ni_rpt = 21; // -->
I'm going to point Kim to this list so that she can do some of her own research. But I've also done some digging on my own to come up with a list of free savings accounts that she might want to consider.
Based on your responses to this question last year, and based on Kim's own preferences, here are some of the best online savings accounts for her situation. (These interest rates are accurate as of 21 January 2020. They're subject to change.)
USAA offers two savings accounts. Its standard savings account currently has interest rates ranging from 0.09% to 0.15%, depending on balance. That's not great. Its “performance first” savings account actually offers lower rates for balances under $10,000 (whuh?), but gradually increases the interest if you stash away a lot of money. If you have over one million in savings, for instance, your rate is 1.06%. But do I need to tell you that it's foolish to have a million dollars in a savings account yielding just over one percent? Because it is. As much as Kim loves USAA, this isn't a good option.
Ally Bank, which is by far the preferred online savings account of GRS readers, currently offers an interest rate of 1.60%. As I say, this is where Kim currently keeps her savings, and it remains a solid option. It's not the highest interest rate, but it's good enough and she knows she likes the company.
Capital One, which used to be ING Direct (the former darling of the personal-finance world), has a performance savings account is currently yielding 1.70%, which is good. Plus, we still have accounts with them. (Note: If you're an old ING Direct or Capital One 360 customer, check your interest rate. For some reason, they've “grandfathered” old ING accounts into a 0.60% interest rate, which makes me cranky. If this has happened to you, you'll want to move to the new, higher-interest savings account.)
HSBC currently has a great interest rate — 2.00%! — and no minimum balance. It was an ad for this account that prompted Kim to start her search. The downsides? This is an online-only savings account. Plus, GRS readers don't like HSBC. They've had poor experiences with the company. Does that mean Kim shouldn't put her money here? No. But it does make us a little leery.
Discover offers an online savings account with a 1.70% APY. No minimums to open, no minimum balance, and no fees. This was the second choice among GRS readers in 2019 and looks like a solid choice.
Synchrony currently has a 1.70% APY and no fees. It also offers an ATM card, which isn't common with online savings accounts.
Last year, GRS readers also liked online savings accounts from American Express (currently 1.70%), Marcus by Goldman Sachs (1.70% APY), and Alliant Credit Union (1.65% APY). For more options, check out this list of current rates from Doctor of Credit.
The Impact of Compound Interest
Ultimately, Kim will have to make this decision on her own. I'll send her a link to this article and let her decide what she wants to do. I don't think there are any bad options here. (Well, I don't think she should put her savings in USAA, even though they're a great company. The interest rate is too low.)
Out of curiosity, I decided to use the compound interest calculator from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to see just how much of an impact interest rate would have on Kim's savings plans.
Assuming she starts with $13,750 and makes $500 monthly contributions, then:
At a 0.01% interest rate (common at large banks right now), she'd have $43,764.25 after five years — only $14.25 more than if she put the money in a piggy bank. After ten years, she'd have $73,793.52, or $43.52 more than if she did nothing.
At a 0.10% interest rate (similar to USAA), Kim would have $43,892.79 after five years or $74,186.66 after ten years. Better than the big banks, but not by much.
At a 1.60% interest rate (similar to Ally), she could have $46,105.41 after five years or $81,153.74 after ten years. Ah, that's more like it.
At a 1.70% interest rate (common among many online savings accounts right now), her nest egg would grow to $46,257.75 after five years or $81,647.37 after a decade. That's a $500 difference from a 1.60% APY over the course of ten years.
At a 2.00% intertest rate (similar to HSBC), Kim might have $46,718.51 after five years or $83,151.32 after ten years. That's nearly $10,000 more than if she were to stash her money at Bank of America or U.S. Bank!
Which online savings account will Kim choose? Time will tell. In the meantime, let us know if you've made any changes to where you keep your money since the last time we asked you a year ago.
In my research, I also came across the Consumers Credit Union rewards checking account, which just might be the best deal out there…if you're able to jump through some hoops. If.
For balances up to $10,000, you can earn 3.09% if you accept electronic documents, make at least 12 debit-card purchases totaling more than $100 per month, and receive more than $500 electronically each month. If you spend more than $500 each month on a Consumers Credit Union credit card, that rate climbs to 4.09%. And if you spend more than $1000 per month on that credit card, your APY is 5.09%.
If you don't meet these requirements, you get 0.01%. And you only get that high rate on your first $10,000 in savings. Anything over that earns less — much less (from 0.10% to 0.20%).
This is a very conditional account, but if you meet those conditions, it's amazing. It doesn't work for Kim's purposes though.

[Ilya Somin] Political Ignorance and the Midterm Elections
It is not yet clear who will win. But widespread political ignorance already ensures many of us will be losers.
Tomorrow, the United States will have an important election. The results may well turn out to be unusual in various ways. But one unfortunate element of continuity is that, whoever wins, the outcome is likely to be heavily influenced by widespread political ignorance. Public ignorance is a longstanding problem, as polls have long found that most of the public has very little understanding of government and public policy. The available data suggests that things have not changed much this time around. For example, recent surveys find bipartisan voter ignorance about numerous basic facts about government policy, evidence that only 36 percent of Americans could pass the relatively simple civics test administered to immigrants who want to become citizens, and that 52% of Americans cannot name even one Supreme Court justice (despite extensive recent public controversy about the Court's decisions, and the political battle over the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh). The public also continues to be ignorant about the distribution of federal spending.
Not all the information tested on these surveys (and others like them) is truly necessary to be a well-informed voter. But, collectively, the data paints a picture of an electorate with very low levels of political knowledge. Such ignorance reduces the quality of government policy, and creates opportunities for politicians and interest groups to exploit public ignorance for their own benefit. Those voters with relatively higher levels of political knowledge, are often highly biased in their evaluation of information, acting more like "political fans" cheering on Team Red or Team Blue than truth-seekers.
Most of this ignorance is not the result of stupidity on the part of voters, or lack of available information. It is, to a great extent, entirely rational behavior driven by the fact that there is so little chance that any one vote will change the outcome of an election. If your only reason to become informed about politics is to be a better voter, that's barely any incentive at all. As a result, most voters tend to be "rationally ignorant" about politics, and the minority who follow it relatively closely tend to be highly biased in their evaluation of information, because getting at the truth is not the main reason why they seek it out in the first place. This kind of bias has been exacerbated by the growing polarization and partisan hatred that afflicts American politics.
While political ignorance is far from a new problem, it is particularly noteworthy in an election that is - like most midterms - in significant part a referendum on the performance of the incumbent president. While Trump is not formally on the ballot, the GOP has (with few exceptions) endorsed his tactics and agenda. A Republican victory would, first and foremost, be a triumph for the president. And that president rose to power in large part by exploiting ignorance about issues like immigration and trade. This year, he has doubled down on the same strategy, by such tactics as making numerous bogus claims about the supposed threat posed by the Central American refugee "caravan."
But, while Trump is a particularly egregious exploiter of political ignorance, many of his tactics are just more extreme versions of those used by more conventional politicians. For example, it is likely that none of Trump's deceptions - so far - has been as successful as that which President Obama used to promote his signature legislation: "If you like your health care plan, you can keep it" - a deserving winner of the Politifact lie of the year award (which Trump went on to win himself last year). Like Trump's deceptions, Obama's line succeeded in large part because most voters did not take the time to learn the truth, even though it was readily available online and elsewhere.
Similarly, like Trump himself, many of his Democratic opponents exploit public ignorance about government spending by claiming that we can maintain or even massively expand current levels of entitlement and defense spending without raising taxes on anyone but "the rich." The growing "democratic socialist" wing of the party has taken this canard of hand to even more egregious heights.
Especially when it comes to this year's election, some may dismiss concerns about political ignorance on the ground that all voters really need to know is which of the two major parties is less bad than the alternative. Democrats may contend (with some justice) that the Trump-era GOP is so obviously awful that there is no need for any more detailed examination of its policies or those of the opposition.
There is some truth to this position. But it ultimately underrates the dangers of ignorance.
I'm a believer in the logic of voting for the lesser evil. And in this election, I tend to agree that a Democratic victory would indeed be preferable on that basis, in large part for the reasons outlined by Reason's Shikha Dalmia. In addition, historical evidence suggests that divided government leads to relatively lower levels of federal spending and budget deficits, a point well made by no less a figure than Kevin Hassett, now chair of Trump's Council of Economic Advisers. At the very least, I think there's a strong case that a Democratic victory is preferable when it comes to control of the House of Representatives; the Senate and various state and local races are more complicated, because the significance of judicial nominations when it comes to the former, and the presence of many issues distinct from national ones with respect to the latter. As that last qualification implies, using simple heuristics to identify the lesser evil is often a more difficult task than it seems, especially when there are numerous different offices and referendum initiatives on the ballot, which address widely divergent issues.
But even if voters are able to successfully identify the lesser evil on election day, most of the harm caused by political ignorance has already been done by that point. I summarized the key reason why here:
[Many focus] on the ways in which ignorance and bias might lead voters to make poor choices between the available alternatives. But public ignorance also has a big effect in determining what those choices will be in the first place. Candidates and parties know they face a largely ignorant electorate, and they structure their platforms accordingly. For example, [Marcus] Gee alludes to the fact that all three... parties [in the recent Ontario election] are largely acting as if the province's very serious fiscal problems can be finessed through a combination of smoke and mirrors and pretending they don't exist. If the voters were better-informed about fiscal issues, the parties could not get away with that, and quite likely would not even try to do so. Similarly, voter ignorance played a major role in ensuring that American voters faced such terrible options in the 2016 general election.... By the time we we get to the polls on election day, much of the harm caused by voter ignorance has already been inflicted, by ensuring that we really do face a choice of evils.
Whoever wins tomorrow's elections, widespead political ignorance has already ensured that most Americans will be losers, at least relative to a world where that problem was less severe.
In principle, there is much that voters can do to improve their performance - both by learning more about the issues and by trying to curb their biases. I discussed several such steps here, and see also this useful article in Scientific American and Georgetown Prof. Jason Brennan's recommendations in his excellent The Ethics of Voting. If you are unable or unwilling to become a reasonably competent voter, there is nothing wrong with simply abstaining from ignorant voting. Given our limited time and energy, it isn't wrong to be ignorant about various candidates and issues. But, with some exceptions, it is generally wrong to inflict that ignorance on the rest of society. And, despite oft-heard claims to the contrary, staying home on election day does not mean you have no right to complain. You still have every right to condemn harmful and unjust government policies. For what it is worth, I practice what I preach, and abstain from voting myself, when it comes to races and referendum initiatives that I know little or nothing about.
Sadly, however, I am not optimistic that more than a small fraction of voters will indeed improve their performance, or seriously consider their own ignorance as a reason for abstention in cases where they would otherwise be inclined to vote. Ironically, the kinds of people who carefully consider these questions are probably already much more knowledgeable and less biased than most of the electorate.
In the long run, the best ways to mitigate the dangers of political ignorance require structural change. I believe we can best alleviate the danger limiting and decentralizing the power of government, and enabling people to make more decisions by "voting with their feet" rather than at the ballot box. Foot voters deciding where they want to live or making choices in the private sector have much stronger incentives to become well-informed than ballot box voters do. But I recognize that there is a range of other possible ways to reduce the harm caused by public ignorance, and am open to considering them. It may be that no one strategy will be sufficient by itself.
In the meantime, we should at least recognize the seriousness of the problem, and that it cannot be fixed merely by defeating any one particularly egregious candidate or party.

First time insurance on following cars?
im 17 and looking for my first car at the moment as i just passed recently. ive looked at a few but when i do insurance quotes on the net i get some crazy quotes like 5000 for a 2004 fiat punto 1.2. i no insurance is expensive for first timers and being a male, and 17, its even more. however all my frineds who have cars pay way less, eg my friend also 17 and first car has a 1.6L vw polo 1998 and he pays only 1,500 also another has a 2004 punto 1.2 and pays 1,700. another has corsa 2005 1.4 and pays about 2000 all above are fully comp and with them as first and only driver on policy. who is the best company for my age and experience group. also whatinsurance prices can i expecct for following cars, if you know or have one etc.. live in a good, low crime area and it will be garaged at night so insurance should be lower with this. corsa polo punto clio 206 fiesta all from about 2000- 2005 plates thanks""
""Can i get my medical insurance to pay for surgery to correct a covered surgery, if coverage lapsed meantime?""
In 2008 I had insurance in California, through my employer. I got laid off in June, but was on COBRA in Sept. 2008, when Blue Cross authorized me for gastric bypass surgery. In Oct 2009, owing to a dispute over COBRA payments, my insurance lapsed. As of Nov 1 I have no coverage, and new insurance through my wife's Kaiser won't start until Jan 1. Yesterday (Dec 23 09) I had to go to the ER due to abdominal pain that turned out to be a complication of the 2008 gastric bypass. Last night I had a CT scan and emergency surgery to correct the problem. Blue Cross rejected the claim, which of course makes sense and pushing it through was just a formality anyway. But today I wondered if, since the procedure was covered originally, would surgery to correct a complication be covered by law even if my insurance lapsed? I know I'm grasping at straws here, but it seems like it might be worth a consultation with an attorney to find out. I think this surgery is going to run to $40K or more. It was a simple laproscopic procedure, but y'know nothing's cheap. The original bypass was billed to Blue Cross at $38K. I know it's not like defect liability, since a surgeon can't guarantee there will not be complications. Also, I know I can't expect free legal advice here. But if someone knows for sure or has thoughts one way or the other would be helpful.""

What can I do about car insurance from another state? Please help!?
Okay basically here's the story. I'm 19, I live with my parents in Wisconsin but I'm trying to move back to Pennsylvania with my aunt and uncle. However I'm not in school at the moment. Apparently if I moved to PA, I'd have to pay 278 dollars more a month through Geico because I'd be living in a different state. I already have a job set up there and all so they could obviously see my paycheck is not from Wisconsin so I can't just lie or something lol. I really know nothing about insurance and how I can work this out without paying that much more. Can anyone help me with other options I could have?

Car insurance cancellation?
I took out an insurance two days ago with a company called (i-kube car insurance). I've been told that I won't be able to drive between the hours of 11pm -5am and if i drive, i will have to pay 45 fine ( a GPS will be installed in my car). I've realised that the insurance is not cheap even though i used my pass plus to get discount. Tesco and Elephant car insurance are even cheaper. They took out my deposit immediately eventhough my insurance will not start till 2nd wk in February. Is it too late to cancel? I haven't received any paper document yet and their website lacks information about cancellation. What shall I do? Should i go with a different company? Would they tell me to pay cancellation fee? They've planned to fix the GPS to my car tomorrow but i haven't agreed to the time yet.""
How to lower price for car insurance?
Hi.So I bought Renault Clio 1.2 16v Extreme for 2.5k . It has modifited alloys (16'),tinted black windows and back lights a'la Lexus. Obviously car was from 2nd hand so these modifications arent worth more than 250-300. I'm 18 years old and Im holding my driving license for 1 month. I quoted myself on many car insurance websites and all I see is 2900-3300 to insure it if I type that my car is modifited (without mods it's 1,8k to insure) ! My question is: Is there car insurance company that will not cover modifited parts but it will cover rest of the car so I'll pay like for non-modifited car? If it is - what's the name of that company. Thank you.""

Why do companies that claim to offer them the best insurance quotes sell leads?
I was shopping around for insurance quotes on my home and cars. Many of the websites that I came across claimed to offer the best quotes from different companies thereby getting me the best price. I started filling out a few forms and, for once, I decided to read the fine print ( you know that small font form we all click agree on). Basically what I found was that the company used 4 agencies that paid them to contact me. What the site was trying to advertise to me was that i would have he best possible quote in the world without having to call up the many insurance agencies around me individually. In reality the fine print ( which in the case of the Internet can be 25 clicks hidden) states that they offer quotes from companies that pay them. Why not state that the information I'm giving them is a lead and that people that get it pay for my information and those that don't do not get it. What about some insurance company that can't afford to pay for my information but can offer me cheaper insurance than those that do pay hat site? I wouldn't be so ticked off if these sites simply stated that they sell our information. Rather than try to make it seem as they find you the best price. False advertising is a cancer. http://www.4freequotes.com/web2000/agents/ http://www.netquote.com/about/media-kit.aspx http://www.netquote.com/affiliate/ http://www.2insure4less.com/insurance-leads http://adrianasinsurance.com/about_adrianas/terms/ Go to any free quote webite and read their privacy policy and the page that's made for affiliates/agents, you will clearly see how your information is sold.""

Car Insurance quote suddenly disappeared?!?

I was on moneysupermarket.com and noticed Admiral were consistently the cheapest company - so I kept changing some details to make the quote lower if possible, just messing around really. After around 10 quotes or so (with them being the lowest each time) I noticed that admiral was no longer displaying a quote and was now in the section shown as no quotes produced along with around 60 other companies. Why is this? Have I broken a limit of some kind? But why would the other companies still be there displaying quotes (albeit they're higher which isn't to my liking!). It's confusing and frustrating, can someone tell me why this has happened? I think I've told you as much info as possible but I'll add more detail if asked. Thanks.""

How to approach a car insurance company to pay damages to my car?
Okay, I was involved in an accident a month ago. I was at the train station attempting to street park, I saw a car parked in the middle of the side walk and a private house driveway, I looked very carefully and no one was in the car, as I was backing up into the parking space I felt the impact on my passenger side back door, I didn't know what it was until I realized the car on the driveway had backed up into my car. The driver stated that he saw me attempting to park when he was walking to his car but he thought I saw him getting into his car, he said he was in a hurry and was late for work and I should have waited for him to get out first (he had a big ego). I never saw anyone in the car. I am the kind of person that I would have waited and then proceed. Meanwhile I only have liability coverage. My insurance company said that he was at fault- they will not pay for his damages $800.

Health not housing pinnacle finances trouble: ballot
The prime minister tried to douse expectations ultimate week the price range will remedy Australia’s housing affordability troubles faced with a crimson-hot belongings market in Sydney and Melbourne.
It’s no matter the issue having been an equally hot political subject matter considering the fact that past due closing 12 months. Two weeks out from Treasurer Scott Morrison’s second finances, a brand new survey located a majority (fifty-seven in keeping with cent) of citizens regard Medicare and hospitals as their pinnacle priority.
The polling, through JWS Research for the Australian Financial Review, located stimulating financial boom and employment came second on forty-eight in keeping with cent, accompanied via welfare and social issues on 46 according to the cent and then housing affordability and investment for education and colleges, each on forty-one consistent with a cent.
The government will reportedly use the price range to shut a loophole which lets in humans to say welfare even supposing they decline interviews or placements below work-for-the-dole schemes.
“The trouble in the interim is that people are escaping any Economic penalty because of the loopholes Hard work created,” Human Offerings Minister Alan Tudge informed Information Corp papers on Monday. “We’re running on solving this.”
On the same time, Australia’s most inclined humans will keep getting admission to felony Services under new authorities investment arrangements.
The government will include $39 million of investment for network felony centers and $sixteen.7 million for indigenous felony Services inside the finances.
Attorney-Standard George Brandis opted to pre-empt the price range because of the significance of the assertion after operating with community criminal companies in addition to the indigenous prison sector to comfortable the final results.
“The world has been ready, hoping that the authorities could see their factor of view and we have executed and we’ve got added for them,” he informed ABC radio.
In the meantime, Universities Australia has warned the government higher training establishments do not have the capacity to soak up any further funding cuts.
It says The arena has already contributed $3.nine billion to assist rein within the federal deficit on the grounds that 2011. “Past the impact on Australian college students and Studies, in addition, cuts would put in jeopardy our achievement as a powerhouse provider of global schooling,” Universities Australia chief executive Belinda Robinson says. Can Gaming Communities clear up Political and Federal budget problems? Ever when you consider that gaming Communities began the usage of Microsoft’s SimCity to layout towns of the future, many have marveled at what number of thrilling ideas, solutions, and ideas had been created to clear up the demanding situations of mankind’s city surroundings. In any case, a civilization has to run like a Swiss Watch with a view to delivering the economies of scale that serve both the complete and the individual.
Whilst constructing a town or urban town in SimCity’s simulation game, the dressmaker must don’t forget the demanding situations of transportation, strength, water, education, distribution, banking, best of life, verbal exchange, and then recall how best to include all the synergies. Now then, It really is a number of thought and for this reason, a variety of high-quality ideas can come from permitting humans to play such a game. But, what if we used gaming Communities to solve political and Federal price range troubles as properly? might this be feasible?
Wherein gamers could design economies, cash flows, banking systems, inventory markets, and government flows of records, taxation, revenue series, and distribution of Offerings and monies to individuals, pensioners, retired parents, healthcare facilities, and all the different things the authorities does inclusive of; trash series, postal Offerings, police, and fireplace. Is it viable for gaming Groups to design a higher international in the political structures that now exist?
Can they layout higher federal and nation budgets? A few would say, “I doubt they could do any worse than our contemporary management!” And Whilst we look at the trillion dollar deficit of the Federal price range for the financial year 2009, or the 26 Billion greenback Deficit in California, it seems we need them. Please don’t forget all this.
Faculties’ Responses to price range problems Will Impact college students Recent News reviews have cited that Schools and universities have experienced massive losses of their endowments in 2009 as a result of the inventory market’s plunge. The impact of those losses has led establishments to make an expansion of choices and modifications to atone for the losses.
inside the past week or so both Williams University in Massachusetts and Dartmouth College in New Hampshire have introduced that their Financial resource regulations had been amended and their “No Loan” guidelines might be rescinded powerful for the autumn of 2011. Several years ago some of select and elite Faculties had introduced “No Loan” awarding guidelines for center profits families. Those rules guaranteed that scholars and dad and mom would not be required to borrow for lessons and fees. As an alternative the colleges might make sure that the student’s complete need might be met via the College or college via institutional offers and scholarships. (center profits definitions varied by way of University and may be any circle of relatives with an AGI of $180,000 or less at one University, while any other College described it as an AGI of $80,000 or less.) With endowment losses These rules couldn’t be maintained. It’s miles in all likelihood that different Colleges will begin to Evaluate their “No Loan” rules and make comparable selections for Fall 2011 or 2012, as properly.
another effect of campuses’ price range woes is the Admissions Workplaces’ boom desire for and focus on recruiting out-of-country applicants among nation Colleges and universities. Out-of-state students pay higher tuition quotes than in-nation college students and accordingly those training bucks can offset losses from endowments. In A few regions, in-nation students could very well be close out in their own nation universities for the autumn of 2010. This fashion might also final for some years until campuses get over the first rate Recession.
College and body of workers layoffs have additionally extended on many campuses as a response to budget shortfalls. college students will experience Those moves. The impact will bring about fewer course offerings, larger training, smaller instructional packages/majors being removed, decreased Offerings and potentially delays in student career areas.
whilst growing lessons and fees also are options, institutions are were hesitant inside the past 12 months to raise them. The few Faculties that did enhance training for fall 2010 have been touchy to the impact the economy had on families and raised them most effective minimally.
In case you are making plans for College you may restriction the impact of the University’s budget troubles. Find out what the College’s Monetary useful resource coverage is and if there’s any opportunity of changes to the policy. additionally look at the recognition of your meant primary. Is it possible the University will eliminate your primary? In that case, you could need to trade your fundamental or attend some other University. If you are presently attending University, residing off campus with roommates instead of on campus may be less steeply-priced. Moving to a greater affordable University or one Wherein your fundamental is successful and popular can also be an choice.
