On July 11, 1804 (exactly 220 years ago today), Aaron Burr killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel in Weehawken, New Jersey.
While the Burr-Hamilton Duel is obviously one of the most famous incidents in American history, it's important to take a moment and realize just how insane this event actually was. Burr -- the incumbent Vice President of the United States -- shot and killed Hamilton -- a fellow Founding Father, former Treasury Secretary, and architect of the American financial system. The Vice President of the United States was charged with murder in New Jersey and his home state of New York and avoided being arrested and put on trial because he went back to Washington, D.C. so that he could perform his Constitutionally-prescribed duty to preside over the U.S. Senate for the remainder of his term. While Vice President Burr was under indictment for MURDER, he calmly and efficiently presided over the only impeachment trial of a Supreme Court Justice in American history! Don't let anyone ever convince you that American politics hasn't always been batshit crazy.

Closeup crop for the funny 🙏
thinking about Your Obedient Servant too much I NEEDED to draw something somewhat related. Idk I'm just a big fan of the passive aggressive waltzy tune in the chorus. And so I shall draw Ham and Burr dancing. Naturally
Do I know how hair greying works. Do I look. No I don't. Fuck it we Ball

wasting your bullet, or "deloping," during a duel was a well-known way of satisfying the terms of the duel without actually killing anyone. one might call it "throwing away your shot," which fits the themes of the musical perfectly.
in the historical duel, Hamilton's bullet hit a tree branch, so it's possible he was aiming upwards, if not quite at the sky. but we don't know who shot first, and if it was Burr, it's possible Hamilton was aiming at Burr but being shot in the stomach caused his shot to go wide.
it is known, however, that when Hamilton's son Philip had his own duel three years earlier (which also killed him), Hamilton advised him to throw away his shot. he was definitely aware of the practice and it's very possible he meant to use it himself.
Naur the duel is real it really happened. Hamilton actually died from the duel
Now I doubt he shot at the sky but who knows
i see. still not woobifying historical figures but good for him or sorry that happened

hamilton things i can't stop thinking about pt. 1
"Wait For It'", sung by Aaron Burr, is about being willing to wait for opportunities and not rushing into action.
His character is portrayed as being chronically cautious, because he has a reputation to uphold, unlike Hamilton.
But.
The one time Burr acts impulsively is when he shoots Hamilton, and right before the bullet hits he yells "WAIT!"
Burr regrets shooting Hamilton. Both of them have ignored their core song lyrics that they repeat over and over again.
Hamilton threw away his shot.
And Burr did not wait for it.
Let that sink in.

"Political opposition can never absolve gentlemen from the necessity of a rigid adherence to the laws of honour and the rules of decorum. I neither claim such privilege or indulge it in others."
-- Vice President Aaron Burr, using an early-19th Century version of "Don't sing it, bring it" to former Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton, June 21, 1804, in the exchange of letters which ultimately led to the duel where Burr killed Hamilton three weeks later.

OK, I'm officially going to punch the next person I see claiming that Burr was relaxed about his duel with Hamilton, if I have to buy a plane ticket to the US and summon them up from the grave.
The letters Burr wrote to Theodosia and her husband the night before the duel are *so* different from the rest of his writing. They're disjointed and chaotic, there are copious postscripts as he keeps thinking of things to add, and the 'Adieu, adieu' close is clearly distraught.
There's a lot of talk about whether Hamilton expected to die. Nobody seems to wonder whether maybe Burr did as well.

just rewatched hamilton and why does charles get so close to burr during ten duel commandments? why'd he need to get that close? was it necessary? burr seems unbothered by it but why? is this the norm? does charles just get super close to everybody all the time? is that a habit of his?

I think the best thing to come out of the hamilton craze was not the musical itself but the drunk history episode where alia shawkat and aubrey plaza played hamilton and burr. the gender envy
