Bunker’s work is characterised by an obsession with those twin disruptors born of Modernism, abstraction and collage, and their continuing powerful presence in contemporary art.
Abstraction is often associated with high ideals, formal innovation and a preoccupation with purely aesthetic experience. Collage is, by contrast, the stuff of gritty satire, stark juxtapositions of imagery and the quotidian world of objects and images.
Bunker plays with the friction generated between these two modes, creating images and objects that are both allusive and elusive. Swinging from the delicate and poetic to the materially dense and brutal, the array of sculptures, paintings and wall-based assemblages on show- all of them made within the last decade– offer tangible proof of Bunker’s ability to conjure captivating and psychologically charged abstract images from a startling and diverse range of materials.
Whilst working on a house in Edinburgh in 1887, two itinerant labourers placed a message inside a whisky bottle and hid it under the floorboards. Bottle and contents have only now come to light; and John Bunker’s survey show at Tension Fine Art, ‘Our Dust is Blowing Along the Road’ derives its title from one of the message’s most memorable fragments. 
Bunker has this to say: “What struck me about this particular story was that the bottle was hidden in a house, rather than cast out to sea, and so long ago. I’d been thinking about putting together a survey show of my work for quite a while; and it occurred to me that, just like the bottle in this story, artworks get hidden away for years and then are rediscovered by the artist or curators. I liked the quiet poetry of those men’s words. They got me thinking: what messages from the past do artworks hold within the fabric of their peculiar singularity? How do they speak to us in the present tense and what might the future hold for them? Even an artwork I finished last week is already history!”
John Bunker was born in Norwich in the UK in 1968. He received BA Hons Degree in Art & Social Context from Dartington College of Arts, Devon in 1991. Since moving to London in 1996, Bunker has worked in various arts settings including community arts and Further and Higher Education. As well as maintaining his multi- disciplinary arts practise, Bunker also regularly curates exhibitions which have included artists as diverse as Sir Frank Bowling OBE RA and Harland Miller. He also writes regularly about art. Bunker has written numerous reviews, catalogue essays and articles and in 2018 co-founded instantloveland.com with Matt Dennis, a website dedicated to exploring the histories and potential futures of abstract art. Bunker has exhibited widely in the UK and abroad and has works in many private collections.

at the Geological Survey of Finland has done some research on this crucial question. Let me just cut to the chase: we do not have enough materials even if we had all the time in the world to do this transition. But we don’t have any time left. And building out this green transition would require vast amounts of fossil fuels for mining, manufacturing and transportation, tipping us over 2°C either way. This is what we are doing now.
Secondly, let’s consider what is needed to manufacture most of our materials used for products and infrastructure. Most vehicles (cars, trucks, ships, airplanes) and machines require steel.
How is steel made? With coal \steel from melt scrap can be done with electric ace furnaces, but this is small scale and requires complete system change. Almost every product requires plastics.
How is plastic made? Petroleum \30% of plastic today is from recycled materials, can it scale?
How are our roads made? Asphalt (petroleum) or concrete (cement - oil and coal).
These are just some parts of the economy, but you probably get the point. Electrifying transportation is not enough. We are not going to save the planet by electrifying some parts of the economy. Even the most basic products have some input from fossil fuels.
Thirdly, how do we transport all of these materials and products around the world?
Cargo ships use bunker fuel (oil).
Airplanes use jet fuel (oil).
Trucks use diesel (oil).
Tractors use diesel (oil).
Mining involves many different vehicles such as dump trucks, excavators, bulldozers, haul trucks, and they use diesel.
And how is this transition going? It’s 2025 soon, have you seen any electric semi-trucks on the road? I haven’t. I see an endless amount of diesel trucks transporting stuff around. I see governments expanding airports with new runways. What. the. fuck. I have also not seen any electric cargo ships or airplanes. Have you? How long does an EV battery last? Maybe 10-20 years. Then what?
What I have seen is record amounts of fossil fuels being burned, we have data on this.
But we have the technology to do this!? We may have some of the technology. We do not have the materials and we certainly do not have the time. We are already at 1.5°C and will be at 2°C soon enough, nothing is going to stop that.
Finally look at politics today. Does it seem like there is a will to do the above? Denial and right-wing politics are on the rise. Trump just got re-elected, unfortunately it wasn’t rigged, this really is what the people want.
# What are some second-order and third impacts?
As mentioned at the beginning of the article: food shortages, lack of fresh water, disease, heat stress, mass migration and conflicts.
Just in terms of natural disasters, think about the recent storm in Valencia. It wiped out crops, farms, and infrastructure. Homes and livelihoods destroyed. Where are they going to go? Can they afford to rebuild their homes and replace everything that they lost? Did they have insurance? Do they even have a job now, or was their workplace wiped out as well? Worked in the tourism industry? Good luck. All of that equipment would need to be replaced, and the land restored, if they plan to grow food in the region at the same scale, and a lot of people depend on that food.
And this is just the beginning of climate disruption. Rebuild Valencia? What do you do when this happens every year because temperatures are going to increase and storms will keep getting worse, much worse. That’s where we are headed.

In 1807, Heinrich von Kleist published a short story called The Earthquake in Chile. Its heroes are a man sitting in prison and a woman in a convent, each confined for the crime of conceiving their child out of wedlock. All of a sudden, an earthquake hits, the buildings that house them collapse, and the couple rediscover each other in the wreckage. Seeking shelter in the woods, they meet people who know of their sin but welcome rather than judge them. In the flush of the emergency, all is transformed: “Instead of the usual trivial tea-table gossip about the ways of the world, everyone was now telling stories of extraordinary heroic deeds.” Exhilarated, the couple follows the masses to the only remaining cathedral, where to their horror, the preacher rages against their transgressions. At the climax of the sermon, the crowd identifies the pair and clubs them to death. The inverted world is gone as soon as it came.
As the Covid-19 contagion passed through China, Western Europe, and the United States, we had our own version of the earthquake. Lockdowns have merged with uncertainty about economic growth to crater oil prices and spike unemployment rates to heights with no historical comparison.
As has become routine during such shocks—from the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis to the Global Financial Crisis in 2008 to the victories of Trump and Brexit in 2016—the rumor ricocheted through the op-eds and articles, think pieces, and tweets, that neoliberalism was dead.
How could anyone claim that markets were the solution to all social problems when it was the countries with strong states and safety nets—Germany, South Korea, Taiwan—where the virus was under control and those with a libertarian streak—the US and the UK—where leaders hesitated to intervene and let different parts of the country outbid each other for life-saving ventilators, test kits, and face masks? Daily applause for frontline health care workers must mean new value for the agents of social reproduction. Generous tips for delivery drivers and gestures of solidarity with Amazon warehouse workers must mean a clear-eyed look at the underpaid labor that makes modern life so frictionless. Visions of blue sky over Delhi and Beijing, air pollution indices registering green in the center of Los Angeles, companies paying people to take barrels of oil they no longer wanted… Surely, after the pandemic we would recognize we had been living in a cursed world and this is the correct one. Humanity had an unearned chance for redemption.
But if we were the couple in the story taking refuge in the woods, we are all now streaming into the cathedral for the fateful service. In the past weeks, a $2 trillion rescue package breezed through US Congress that will overwhelmingly benefit large corporations and the super rich, not ordinary workers. Speculation of a bailout for the US oil sector will surely keep high-carbon capitalism churning onward, especially as the Environmental Protection Agency has lifted regulations for the duration of the crisis. In Canada, the premier of Alberta pledged $7 billion for its own cherished pipeline project. The value of nurses and other health care workers has been recognized in the United States, but only in the sense that they are one of the few exceptions in a presidential executive order that otherwise provisionally banned all immigration to the country.
America has found its own sin-drenched couple to turn on. This week a strategy memo urged Republican candidates to “Attack China.” More than half of Americans surveyed want reparations from China for the virus; the United States has defunded the World Health Organization in protest against its supposed subordination to the country; and the state of Missouri has sued the People’s Republic of China (and a string of associated institutions) in a domestic court. A Fox News commentator beloved by the president shouted that politicians must “start working on how you’re going to punish, ostracize, alienate, and financially sanction and make China accountable for what they did to us and the rest of the world.” A fragile unity will be restored—as it so often is—by targeting the outsider, the alien, the nonwhite person.
Without intervention, the community after the earthquake reconstitutes the one that preceded it. The interregnum extends only if there are social formations to carry it. And right now, the streets are empty, with would-be marchers self-distancing and juggling children and babies.
The leading mainstream political opponent to Trump is an elderly man in a Delaware basement with a habit of vanishing from the public eye for long stretches of time. Joe Biden was the safety candidate against an insurgent Bernie Sanders. He now sits in a bunker with no movement behind him.
We have seen a world where capitalism stops. But it will start again. When America “reopens,” it will be much like the old America. Big companies will be bigger, ever more beholden to the leader for having saved them. Arguments for austerity will return in the wake of the unprecedented spending.
The “thought leaders” in Trump’s recently announced Great American Economic Revival Industry Groups are all from the “free market” think tanks that have advised the GOP since the days of Ronald Reagan—Heritage Foundation, Cato Institute, Hoover Institution, American Legislative Exchange Council—they’re the priests arriving to give their sermon. The church of neoliberalism will be rebuilt and the flash of paradise in the emergency snuffed out.
For the real story, look up. Above the steeple, the vultures are circling. The Wall Street Journal predicts a wave of defaults, bankruptcies, and restructurings. Imperiled companies will see their devalued stock scooped by so-called distressed debt specialists, more commonly known as vulture investors, who make use of the generosities of US Chapter 11 law to strip employees of benefits or offload them to the state before flipping their acquisitions at a profit.
A pioneer in vulture investing and now the commerce secretary, Wilbur Ross praised bankruptcy in 2003 as “the corporate form of Darwinism.” Howard Marks, director of investment fund Oaktree Capital Management, was even more graphic in a recent letter to shareholders quoted in The Wall Street Journal. “Capitalism without bankruptcy is like Catholicism without hell,” he wrote, suggesting that federal bailouts shouldn’t shield market actors from “a healthy fear of loss.” He failed to add that people like himself have learned how to monetize the flames. His own Oaktree Capital Fund is reportedly raising “$15 billion for what would be the biggest-ever distressed-debt fund.”
The next year will be a litany of the “workouts and turnarounds” that bankruptcy specialists are known for, ruthlessly wringing the value out of companies, while ignoring the human or social costs. Distressed debt funds are the loan sharks of the business world, and will feel no compunction about pursuing the bottom line. We have seen a preview of such dispassionate calculation in the last month, as stock values soared alongside record unemployment numbers and mounting deaths. The combination seemed shocking to some people, even scandalous. “The stock market doesn’t care about your feelings,” was the response of a Los Angeles Times business reporter, “nor should it.”

We would like to share some information on what will be going on at CMGC over the next few months as we look forward to a great season.
Course Development
Back in September 2020 we made contact with Paul Woodham, Head of Agronomy at STRI (Sports Turf Research Institute) to come and visit CMGC to review, advise and highlight the key areas of work and investment needed to steer the club on a path for continued improvement.
Following this we put together a phased plan to improve the course in the short, medium and long term which included commissioning Jonathan Gaunt, Gaunt Golf Designs (www.gaunt-golf-design.com) to prepare a masterplan for future course improvements here at CMGC which will be phased in over the next few years, this will include bunker reconstruction, remodeling and making the course more enjoyable to play.
And so it begins…
Its not too hard to guess that the main challenge we have faced over the last few years is dealing with prolonged periods of wet conditions, the winter of 2019- 2020 was one of the wettest on record and although covid prevented much winter play this year the wet weather continued and this exposed some problem areas for us.
After several course walks, reviews and meetings we collectively agreed that the primary objective was to increase year-round playability by improving drainage potential on certain fairways and the drainage potential on the greens.
On the advice of Paul, we explored several options for greens drainage before deciding that the best solution for CMGC would be to install PCD Passive Capillary Drainage. This is a swift and largely undisruptive method of installation and would see the green back in play very quickly subject to favourable weather conditions at the time of installation.
The drainage work will be carried out by DJUKE https://www.djuke.co.uk/pc-drainage who have worked on some of the best courses in the UK including Wentworth, Walton Heath and Foxhills.

The greens drainage will have an instant impact, will reduce the moisture loading over time, and create a firmer, drier surface and allow us to make gains on thatch reduction.
The PCD will cover all greens on Foxes Run and Badgers Sett plus the putting green, work should be completed in four weeks with a start date of Monday 17th May. This will be the biggest project DJUKE have completed in one go and will a massive benefit to all members and staff here at CMGC.
With improvements to the greens approved we then conducted a review with Paul to identify areas where further drainage is required to improve playability. Carrick Sports spent a day with us at the beginning on March to conduct a review on where improvements could be made, a topographical survey was completed a couple of weeks ago to confirm a plan and a price agreed which will also see work commence on Monday 17th May.
Carrick Sports will be working on the 3rd, 5th and 7th on Badgers and 1st, 4th, 6th and 7th on Foxes.
Drainage will comprise of:
- 100mm dia perf main drains, backfilled with clean gravel and rootzone.
- 80mm dia perf main lateral drains, backfilled with clean gravel and rootzone at 5m centres.
Work should take 6- 8 weeks to complete.
Working Schedule
Work will begin on Badgers Sett for two weeks before heading on to Foxes Run. For health and safety whilst this work is going on we will be closing down the loop that is been worked on, with large machinery, haulage and for efficiency it would be best to do this so that the project runs on time.
We’ll obviously still always have 18 holes open and with the contractors working Monday- Friday all 27 holes will be open over the weekends.
This is an exciting project and will be one that will serve CMGC well over the next 10- 20 years and one that we hope will give you more playing time over a 12-month period.
We appreciate some will wonder why we didn’t do this work in January, February and March when the course was closed due to government guidelines and the answer is pretty simple, the ground conditions, winter temperatures and lack of growth would simply have meant that the work wouldn’t have been completed to the desired standard. Doing the work now will enable the turf to recover quickly and leave less stress on greens, doing the project in the height of summer leaves it vulnerable for cracks in the greens and doing it in the autumn would mean we run the risk of the weather turning and the ground conditions not recovering quickly enough.
As the pictures from previous jobs show the greens are back in play with very little disruption.
