Year of the Eclipse at Buffalo State University
On April 8, 2024, at 3:18 p.m., those of us in Western New York will experience a little less than four minutes of darkness. The total solar eclipse, which occurs when the disk of the moon completely covers the sun, is extremely rare. It’s so rare that it usually only occurs in one location every 300 to 400 years.
To prepare for this exciting event, I have designated April 2023–April 2024 the Year of the Eclipse at Buffalo State University.
Some of you attended the “Countdown to Totality” open house on April 8, when we kicked off the Year of the Eclipse. That was just the beginning. Throughout the year, the Whitworth Ferguson Planetarium will feature public programming that focuses on the main players in an eclipse—the sun, moon, and earth—as well as eclipse mythology, history, safety, and connections to art.
Kicking off the Year of the Eclipse at Buffalo State University with the "Countdown to Totality" event held on April 8, 2023.
It begins with “Moons: World of Mystery” this Friday, May 5, at 7:00 p.m. and will be repeated every Friday through June 10 (except for May 19). Fittingly, the planetarium will end each program with a laser show set to songs from Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon immediately afterward at 8:30 p.m. Check out the planetarium’s event page to see more programming in the weeks and months to come and to purchase tickets.
In addition, faculty members across campus are encouraged to tie the total solar eclipse into their courses over the fall 2023 and spring 2024 semesters. Kevin Williams, associate professor of earth sciences and planetarium director, will work with the provost and deans to connect with faculty to get them excited and prepared. Dr. Williams and Mary Beth Wojtaszek, associate events manager, are also co-chairing the campus Eclipse Task Force to connect with other offices and departments across campus.
I know that by the time the total eclipse occurs next April, we’ll all be ready!

7XVETHEGENIUS - Buffalo Wordsmith
What people find as challenging - 7xve finds as comfort. She finds comfort in the struggle, excitement in the challenges and jubilation in vulnerability.
Any person that encounters a creative jolt must act upon that energy in order to create. All the while, it seems like female creatives only break through the barriers of the music industry when they sell their bodies. One woman from Buffalo – 7vethegenius – whos name is stylized 7xve for Love remains steadfast in letting her wordplay do the talking. Coming from the depths of rough&tumble…

Diversity Fellowship Graduate Students Paying it Forward
On a Sunday afternoon in late February Buffalo State Diversity Fellows met in Butler 210 to discuss how they could pay forward the honor of receiving funding assistance towards their graduate studies.
Their goal was to identify a spring 2018 event at which they could volunteer and invite others to engage in community service. Ultimately the American Red Cross Home Fire Campaign was selected.
On Saturday April 28, 2018 I had the privilege of volunteering with Buffalo State graduate students at the American Red Cross Home Fire Campaign. We volunteered as greeters, parking assistants, and inventory trackers. The Buffalo State’s involvement was led by graduate students Antonio Regulier, Ashley McKillip, and John Figueroa. Their vision is to increase the number of graduate students who participate in volunteer activities as a Buffalo State delegation. John also facilitated volunteer efforts of several youth engaged in a community connections program in Buffalo.
The Home Fire Campaign’ goal is to install 100,000 free smoke alarms in high risk neighborhoods nationwide in April and May. Participants at the event included a multitude of community partners and volunteers. The campaign resulted in 711 alarms being installed in over 220 homes across the eight counties of Western New York, while also teaching families about home fire safety.
Our contact at the America Red Cross was Alexis Willard. Alexis will be graduating from Buffalo State with her Master of Public Administration in Public and Nonprofit Management in May 2018. Alexis is a Disaster Program Specialist for the American Red Cross who during the fall 2017 semester was deployed for three weeks to Puerto Rico to deliver humanitarian aid.
The volunteer efforts I witnessed attest to the civic minded students we have at Buffalo State who are engaged and active in the community and across the nation. The entire experience served as yet another impressive testament as to the quality of students we have at Buffalo State, SUNY’s Urban Engaged Campus.

Becoming a Bengal
Excitement crackled in the air April 6 when we hosted the spring open house for accepted students. Every year, students who have been accepted for the fall first-year class are invited to campus to experience the culture of Buffalo State and to have any lingering questions answered by faculty and staff members.
I had the pleasure of greeting and welcoming future Bengals to Buffalo State at the Spring Open House.
This year we hosted the largest accepted-student open house in the history of our campus, with over 1,200 guests. The students seemed eager and attentive as they listened to opening comments and then dispersed throughout campus to visit with faculty and staff members.
Future students exploring the electrical engineering program.
The parents, too, seemed to relish the experience, and they noted how impressed they were with the open house. Those of us in the Campbell Student Union could feel the continued energy as students had their photos taken and acquired their first Buffalo State T-shirts.
Last week we held a special reception for accepted honors students in the LoRusso Alumni and Visitor Center. We hosted 120 guests, all eager to hear just a little more about our Honors Program. A highlight for me was the student panel, whose members discussed the community they feel here, the amazing faculty they are privileged to learn from, and the significant growth experience that has occurred for each of them. It is hard to believe that potential students could reach any other decision than to become a Bengal after hearing from the panel.
Current students in the Honors Program sharing their experience with future honor students.
It takes our entire community to provide an outstanding educational experience. Becoming a Bengal is very special, and I look forward to adding these new students to our community next fall.
