I’ve just finished reading Ron Wiens’ excellent book, Building Organizations: that Leap Tall Buildings in a Single Bound, 2012.

If I understood it correctly, the role of a leader is to build an organization that (eventually) won’t need him or her to function effectively. 
You can do this, according to Ron, by building, EI, emotional intelligence, RI, relationship intelligence and CI, corporate (or organization) intelligence.
How?
EI means that people within your organization (and I would broaden that to include your entire stakeholder group--customers, suppliers and marketing partners, board of directors/advisers, shareholders, officers, media partners and sponsors) believe in themselves and the leader helps/encourages those beliefs
RI means that every stakeholder trusts and believes in their colleagues/other stakeholders within their organization’s ecosystem, and they share information widely and freely
CI means that each stakeholder believes in the company’s (or organization’s) vision, goals and culture, and they will do everything they can within their creative power to further the team and organization’s aims plus they will embrace changes needed to realize these objectives.
If a leader can create the right environment/culture and the right set of objectives for an organization, then they will have a company that can leap tall buildings.
Ron also notes that leaders today need to not only have the four qualities traditionally associated with top managers--belief in self, authoritative, able to see tomorrow and works hard for himself or herself--but four other seeming contradictory character traits, namely: humility, able to establish intimacy, build for today and working for the whole.  
The challenge I’ve asked Ron to address next is: Can he apply his thinking to whole towns or cities to animate them--giving them more opportunity to compete in a fast-changing worldwide competition based, as it is today, on the competitive advantages (or not) of each city-state.

When you buy a new home from a developer or if you are buying a lot and building your own, a new home purchase poses quite a few challenges.
The three biggies are:
-cost overruns
-delay
-deficiencies
So, recommending a homebuilder is fraught with danger–since almost all of them are late in delivery, want more money from you than what’s in the contract you executed (because you signed off on change orders during construction) and deliver a product that has many deficiencies (which makes you triply angry because most of them have after-sales-service that sucks).
Contracts (agreements of purchase and sale, APS) are complicated too.
Here’s an email I sent to a client of mine who is buying a newly created lot (done by way of severance) and hiring a PM (project manager) to build him a new home for his growing famdamily:
Hey Albert (not his real name). Congrats on this deal. #Great Here’re a few notes to help you with this:
The purchase price for the lot and house is $520,000
Lot is $195,000
House is $325,000 (for a 2,400 sq ft home or $135.42 per sq ft—an excellent new build price—many of them are much more expensive like $220 per sq ft!)
Make sure that this price includes DCs (development charges, which can be $30k or more, building permit, landscaping, driveway and deck/patio)

If the deposit is $70,000, leave it in your bank account (just show the seller that you have it) or pay it into your lawyer’s escrow account pending completion
Register your APS on title to protect your interest—agree to postpone it to a first mortgage for construction and to a second mortgage for the lot owner too
Make sure that if there is a construction mortgage, it’s for bona fide construction on your site and that it is not advanced and registered in one tranche… why is that?
Because you could end up with two mortgages registered on title (one for the lot purchase, in 2nd place, and another for construction in 1st place, which     together amount to $520,000 yet little or no work is done, in which case, your lot is kaput)
So, your PM only gets an advance in arrears when the work is done and a subsearch has been completed by your real estate lawyer (to make sure there are no construction liens either—here’s where it gets tricky—your PM can get the work done, take the mortgage advance and not pay his subs… landing you in the same position—underwater on your lot and SOL (substantially-out-of-luck) once more)
You need to be on-site every day to check the work yourself
Note: HST is likely due and payable on both lot sale and new build so factor that in—check your APS
Make sure your APS says that the HST rebate goes to the buyer! (You get some of this back; see below—it’s a lot of money)
Love the walkout basement; plan for a future in-law suite and because of the fantastically deep backyard, a coach house too 😊

Blowing it
I have a small group of Canucklehead entrepreneurs that I coach. They have a great idea (seriously) to launch a new service to do the last mile of ****** for homeowners. What it is exactly, I am not allowed to say, but there’s no doubt that an app would be an amazing boost.

But that’s not what I recommended. Nope. Here’s what I said instead:
Here’s the thing—Bill (not his real name) had the same idea. 
If you guys were young Americans, I would agree. 
We could probably raise $20 million in VC cash to begin with and over $100,000,000 in the next 3-years and blow this thing up right across North America, maybe the world. In Canada, though, we would probably spend a year raising a measly $50k, and the only thing we would blow is our brains out.
1. So, start SLOW. 
Print 5,000 cheap doorhangers, distribute them in neighborhoods where you think you’ve got a decent chance of capturing your first clients, build a $1,000 website and just START. 
Worry about everything else later. 
2. Prove the concept first.
I’m sorry to rain on everyone’s parade, but I know how to start new enterprises in Canada (and everywhere except the US and probably China)—by bootstrapping it.

Initials
A friend of mine seeing as I sign off on some of my emails with “BMF”, which stands for “Bruce Murray Firestone”, commented that it could also mean, “Blowing Money Fast”.
As a former owner of an NHL team, I could only say, “Guilty.”
You know what National League franchise owners say to each other?
Owner 1 asks, “What’s the second happiest business day of your life?”
Owner 2 says, “Dunno.”
Owner 1 answers, “The day you purchase a national hockey league franchise. What’s the happiest business day of your life?”
“Don’t know,” answers owner 2.
“The day you sell it.”
