MOTHER 3 (GBA) 2003 Prototype

A glimpse into the early days of the Gameboy Advance Version, during an era in development where its art direction was undecided, and when development truly began.

The image shown above is the earliest look at the in-game graphics for "MOTHER 3" on the Gameboy Advance, done by producer Shinichi Kameoka of Brownie Brown. The original intention was to surprise players with a brand new art direction unlike the previous titles, leaning more towards the styles found in their previous titles.

Most surprising of all is that this art-style stayed for a while, with development of the game's first chapter being done with this art-style until Itoi played a prototype of it. The quote above was what Kameoka gathered from it.

Brownies posted this on their Instagram page today! For context, they have their own signboard at Kichijoji Station, where they promote EGGLIA and other products of theirs. But it seems something new is being teased...

The text reads:

吉祥寺から新たな伝説の鼓動が聞こえ始めた… "From Kichijoji, the heartbeat of a new legend has begun to be heard..."

Strangely enough, they used a similar tagline when EGGLIA was first teased way back when:

新たな「伝説」が始まる…。 "A new "legend" begins…"

What do we suppose this could be? A successor to EGGLIA? A new original game? A grand return to their Mana series roots!?

The best character of the game is gone and we've only the Mana Sanctuary to finish off. It's a hard fight through dragons, demons, maz—pfft, nah, I just cleave everything with my axe and tell Julius to get bent.

Man. So many answers, it sucks to pick JUST one.

I choose to waste mine on some IP necromancy and acquire the Magical series Brownie Brown - now 1-Up Studios - did. Magical Vacation, Magical Starsign...now I want a third game, dammit. And with how tech is today, all those cool ideas they had can be expanded on!

Amigo Mode with 100 people is nothing with how online games can be. Especially if this hypothetical third game was on PC.

A magic system like the first game, with so many different types of magic.

I wanna be able to customize my party with both students and recruitables I can find.

Let's go back to Will-O-Wisp Academy!
