Brooklyn 45 is a great little bottled locked room deliberation over the ghosts of war, and also there are ghosts. I love a movie where everyone is like 50. Love a seance movie too.

Brooklyn 45 (2023) - Review
Director: Ted Geoghegan | Runtime: 1h 32mins | Horror, Drama
Just after the end of World War II, a group of decorated veterans meet to support their grieving friend who wants to perform a seance in order to communicate with his late wife.
Ted Geoghegan’s multi-layered, multi-genre, chamber piece is a bold mesh of suspenseful Horror and Post-War Drama. Like all the great Horror films before it, it uses the tropes of jump-scares, poltergeists and seances to give us a shock, but the true fear-factor of Brooklyn 45 is what’s haunting the characters inside. You’ll see no Nazi-zombies or reanimated world leaders, but instead four major characters battling with the reality of what they’ve done during their time in the war.
Tumblr media
At first the film seems to be more about solidifying character and background more so than offering us anything remotely horror-like, but once the supernatural stuff begins and the characters indulge their grieving friend, Brooklyn 45 really begins to show you what it’s all about. As the group hold hands and begin to speak with the dead, the tone of the film takes a tectonic shift, amplifying the tension and increasing the intrigue ten-fold. Despite the supernatural effects feeling somewhat smaller-budget, they compliment the retro-style comfortably.
Tumblr media
With this multi-character discussion taking up most of the runtime, the initial set up occasionally gets lost in the intensity of discussion. Brooklyn 45 is both a Horror and a Hitchcockian Post-War thriller, but the balance often shifts a little too much to consider them a cohesive unit. Often the characters have to remind us of the otherworldly aspects, rather than them blending easily into the backdrop. Having said that, each performance from the actors feels wonderfully cemented in each avenue the film takes, helping to sell this film as the multi-layered story it is.
It’s easy to pick at the exact moments Brooklyn 45 slips and fumbles, but this is still a highly original film that prefers to be bold than ordinary. There are countless Horror films that time and time again play it safe, but Ted Geoghegan injects enough interest and difference into his film to make it much more tangible. The film may not be perfect, but in the vast, and often mundane, landscape of the Horror genre Brooklyn 45 sticks out for its fresh and original story.

Review: "Brooklyn 45"
World War 2 had a way of not only destroying everything it touched but also creating things as well. New ideologies, new social standings, and new relationships. Years after it ended five friends get together to drink and reminisce after the death of one of their own. Death is never the end. Continue reading Untitled
