DFP Actors August: Joel Tobeck
Tumblr media
NZ actors tend to end up in a lot of the same shows over the years it seems. I have a lot of fun spotting familiar faces, so I thought this would be a fun and silly little project, seeing which actors have repeatedly been in things that Deano was also in (not necessarily alongside). Just a bit of trivia. Enjoy!
Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (1995-1998/1996-1999)
Tumblr media
Dean played a few different characters on this show: Iloran - S1E12 "The Gauntlet" Young Iolaus - S4E3 "Regrets... I've Had a Few", S4E11 "Medea Culpa" and S4E20 "Twilight". Ruun - S4E7 "Prodigal Sister"
Interestingly, Dean played that 'Ruun' character (not pictured) randomly between other season 4 episodes where he appears as Young Iolaus, and he really doesn't look very different from when he's playing Iolaus, so I feel like even casual watchers would have easily recognized him. At least his season 1 character, Iloran, looks very different with his neck beard and shorter hair. Ruun just looks like Iolaus got some scars.
Joel played a few characters as well: King Boreas - S2E18 "Promises" Strife - 6 episodes between S3E13 and S4E15 David Scott Pollison, office production assistant - S4E15 "Yes, Virginia, There is a Hercules" Deimos - S5E20 "Fade Out" and S6E2 "Love, Amazon Style"
Xena: Warrior Princess (1996-2000/2000-2001)
Tumblr media
Dean played two roles: Homer/Orion - S1E13 "Athens City Academy of the Performing Bards" Wiglaf - S6E9 "Return of the Valkyrie"
Joel also played two roles: Deimos - S5E22 "Motherhood" Lucifer - S6E13 "You Are There"
It may be worth noting that Deimos is a character that also appeared on Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and yet his name is spelled incorrectly in the credits for his appearance on Xena, so he's credited as "Demios" instead of "Deimos" which meant that I spent a stupid amount of time trying to figure out if it actually was the same character or not because I don't have that season of HTLJ and had to go digging on fan wikis. Bless the fans.
Shortland Street (1996/1996, 2015-2016)
Tumblr media
Dean played Nurse Harry Martin in 1996 (per IMDB). Joel played Craig Develter in 1996, and then Jimmy Isaac in 2015-2016.
The Chosen (1998)
Tumblr media
I can't find a copy of this anywhere. I did find a trailer for it but I didn't recognize anyone in the clips they used.
Dean plays Andrew Scott. Joel plays Trevor O'Connor.
Young Hercules (1998-1999)
Tumblr media
Dean plays Iolaus, the sidekick/bff to Hercules, throughout the series. He is credited for 46 of the 50 episodes (I haven't finished it yet at the time of prepping this post - what's with the other 4 episodes?? Unacceptable lmao.)
Joel plays Strife (aka 'Nysus Gaius') - a henchman to the antagonist Ares - and is credited in 12 episodes (I think some is flashbacks).
I love both of their characters so much, omg. Joel totally stole my heart being a goofball in this role, and Dean is a dreamboat as well as hilarious. I have such a soft spot for weird/funny sidekick characters, ugh.
Westside (2016-2017/2015-2016)
Tumblr media
Dean plays Evan Lace in 9 episodes, S2E2-S3E3. Joel plays Des McEwen in 8 episodes, S1E4-S2E10.
Hillary (2016)
Tumblr media
Dean plays George Lowe (in all 6 episodes). And he's lovely. Joel plays Bunny Fuchs in (episodes 4 and 5). He's not as lovely but Joel looks great.
The Brokenwood Mysteries (2018/2022)
Tumblr media
Dean is in S5E4 "The Dark Angel" as Barnaby Buchanan. Joel is in S8E1 "From the Cradle to the Grave" as Bobby.
Joel's episode only just came out in July! I had this post all queued up without this included, and then happened to see him in a BTS shot Fern Sutherland shared on her IG story and was like "IS THAT JOEL!?!?" and had to edit this post to include his Brokenwood appearance. ♥
One Lane Bridge (2020/2020-2021)
Tumblr media
Dean plays Andrew "Grub" Ryder, and is credited for the first 6 episodes, S1E1-S1E6. Joel plays Stephen Tremaine, and is credited for the first 11 episodes, S1E1-S2E5. This show looks real sad.
And that's what I got for these two - do you know of anything I missed?

Tv Show Recommendations
Part One Here
Flashpoint: A Canadian show about the SRU - Strategic Response Unit (A section of the Police Force). All the characters are lovable and each episode is different (My fave character is Spike - bomb and tech nerd with a heart of gold). There is drama/suspense involved in each episode but it’s never overwhelming (except for a few select episodes). There are 5 seasons (75 episodes) and they are all on Hulu. I would link a promo trailer but they all make it look super dramatic when it’s not.
Republic of Doyle: This is another Canadian show. It’s about the Doyle family, a group of Private Investigators. The main character is Jake Doyle, he is an idiot but in a charming and cute way. It is both stupid and hilarious (with a little drama thrown in here and there but not too much). I definitely suggest it if you love stupid cop comedy shows. There are 6 seasons (77 episodes), and they are also all available on Hulu. Here is a really short trailer from youtube.
Star Trek Voyager: This Star Trek show takes place at the same time as Deep Space Nine (which I also recommend), so about the 2370′s. It follows Captain Kathyrn Janeway (yes a female captain). The characters are all great and the story line is good. They get shot into deep space and the series follows their adventures as they are trying to make it back home. There are 7 seasons, 168 episodes. All are available on Hulu.
Star Trek Enterprise: This one takes place early on in the mid 22nd century (about 100 years before Kirk is captain). It follows Captain Archer (Whose prized beagle is referenced in the 2009 movie) and his crew as the Enterprise is sent on it’s first voyage. I like all the characters and the story line is good (apart from some stupid episodes). There are 4 seasons and 97 episodes, all on Hulu.
The Brokenwood Mysteries: This is a show based in New Zealand. It’s a crime show, three cops/detectives, mostly focused on one. Most of the crimes are pretty weird (not all of them). It never gets too dramatic, and there is humor thrown in. There is a ginger detective who is adorable (an also played a power ranger in one of the old original 90′s shows) and another man, who’s name is Jared, who is pretty attractive. I should mention that every episode is about 1 hour and 30 minutes long. They are on youtube (you have to pay). Though I watch them on Acorn.tv, which you also have to pay for. HERE is a trailer for the series on youtube.
9-1-1: This FOX show just started, it’s following the daily lives of a team of firefighters, a police officer, and a 911 Operator, whose lives all intersect in pretty much each episode. Each person has their own unique backstory. All the characters are pretty likable, and I do really suggest it. Each episode is different and somewhat dramatic, but not too much. All episodes of the first season are on Hulu and a second season has been announced.
Justified: This is a show that takes place in Kentucky. Here is the description given by Google: “Deputy Raylan Givens has his own, Wild West-style methods of upholding justice, putting him at odds with the criminals he hunts and with his bosses in the U.S. Marshals Service. And an incident prompts his reassignment to the Kentucky district where he grew up. The character is based on one created by author Elmore Leonard in several books and short stories.” I suggest this to anyone that likes shows like Castle. Raylan Givens is a great character, another character called Tim Gutterson is great, and then there is Boyd Crowder, who I have a love/hate relationship with. I watch is on Solarmovies, but you can watch is on Google, Youtube and Amazon Video. Here is a trailer for the first season - just to give you a feel at what it’s about.
The Magnificent Seven (1998-2000): This show is based on the 1960 movie. The characters are all amazing, I love them all. Thank you to @whatif-animagineblog for introducing it to me! This is the description from IMDB: “When an Indian village is threatened by ex-Confederate soldiers, several villagers head out to seek help. They recruit seven men, each with unique skills, who return to the village and take on the raiders. Following this, the men take up residence in a small town, making their skills available to those in need.” The characters are Chris Larabee (the leader clad in black, hard past, great heart), Vin Tanner (Ex buffalo hunter, ex bounty hunter, current adorable man with great hair), Ezra Standish (Gambler, Con Artist, Cheater, Southern Gentlemen, hard not to love), Buck Wilmington (Lover of women literally and figuratively, funniest character - to me at least, great mustache), Nathan Jackson (ex slave, closest thing to a doctor the town has, heart of gold), J.D. (youngest, clumsy, adorable, surprised he didn’t get himself killed in the first episode), and Josiah Sanchez (Played by Ron Perlman, use to be a missionary, not afraid of death, nice to everyone, says a lot of philosophical shit). I couldn’t find a short clip that would give a description, so HERE is the opening sequence so you can see the characters and some brief glimpses of the show. You can watch all the episodes in decently bad quality on youtube.
Any Jane Austen Book Based Movies/Mini Series: My favorites are Pride and Prejudice (2005 and 1995), Persuasion (2007), Emma (2009), Mansfield Park (1999), Mansfield Park (2007), Northanger Abbey (2007) (Northanger Abbey has some cringy parts but over all it’s pretty good) and Sense and Sensibility (2008) (I write for all of these) - Pride and prejudice (1995), Emma and Sense and Sensibility are all on Hulu.
If you have any shows or movies that you would like to recommend to me please just send me a message or an ask!
