So I started watching Bridgerton and now I’m going to drop it just because of the whole Michaela/Michael Stirling controversy.
Here’s a link about it: https://www.forbes.com/sites/maryroeloffs/2024/06/25/bridgerton-gender-swap-controversy-explained-why-michaela-stirling-has-thrust-fans-into-turmoil/
Disclaimer: This isn’t about the character being a lesbian. This is about the very possible colorist undertones of this casting and character.
With as much as dark skin Black women get masculinized just for being dark skin, I don’t know why they would choose a dark skinned Black woman for a character that was a man in the Bridgerton books. I just feel like it’s setting up the stage for racially inappropriate and colorist comments regarding their relationship with Francesca. I.E, “She’s the man in the relationship” , making Francesca softer and more feminine than Michaela, etc. Honestly, the optics of this is racially inappropriate and misogynoir. Overall, the optics of making a male character from the books into a darkskinned Black woman is just some lowkey colorist and racist ish that most people would look over because they get to have a lesbian ship in Bridgerton.
@thisismisogynoir I’m @ing you so you can say something or add commentary.
#blackblr#sanyuthewitch05#colorism#misogynoir#not to mention the racial abuse some of the black actors got#and all they were told to do was get over it#like I’m side eyeing this decision#bridgerton#I forgot to say that she’ll most likely be chasing after Francesca and vying for her attention and affection if they follow the actions#Of Michael’s character in the books#also in general#the black or blackish characters get the short end of the stick in the show#Bridgerton more like Beigerton#Beigerton
