Remember Kareena Kapoor Khan setting the ramp ablaze in a stunning off-shoulder pink ensemble at a popular awards do in Dubai? Or those photos of her in lawn suits that broke the Internet? Pakistani designer Faraz Manan has established himself as one of the favourites of timeless Bollywood beauties like Kareena Kapoor Khan, Madhuri Dixit Nene, Karisma Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra Jonas. Even Jacqueline Fernandez and Shraddha Kapoor have turned heads in his glamorous creations.

He has also become popular with Indian brides and guests at Indian weddings, the Al-Thani royal family of Qatar, and the families of Saudi Sheikhs. In his home country, Mahira Khan, amongst many others, carries his outfits with adaa, or elegance. But Kareena is Faraz Manan’s favourite, and India, he says, is his inspiration.

Indian musings

As a couturier from across the border, Faraz is excited by the sheer variety and volume of fabrics that are available in India. “They provide so much inspiration; the amount of crafts and fabrics in the country is a designer’s delight,” he gushes. “There are beautiful cuts and traditions, and if there is one word to sum up Indian fabrics, it’s ‘colour’! No one does colour better than Indian designers.”

His favourites are Lucknowi chikankari, Benarasi fabrics, Rajasthani gota work and even bandhani. Since his style leans towards modern fusion, he mostly uses zardozi, but Faraz wishes he could use all of India’s fabric crafts. “I also love jamavar and kimkhaab (brocade). There is nothing more timeless than kimkhaab,” he says wistfully. “It is handwoven, has sheen and yet is controlled. For casual wear, I love mulmul (pure cotton).”

Light skin: Stick to mid- range hues like blush pink and powder blue. Avoid white, bright yellow, orange, and nudes.

Medium skin: Ivory and tea pink work wonders.

Dusky skin: Rose gold, blush pink and red are beautiful.

Dark skin: All pastels look perfect, except grey.

Faraz visits India every year, and the food interests him just as much as the fabrics. “I am a big foodie and absolutely love the street food in Mumbai,” he laughs. “I love the chaat in Mumbai, and nihari and kebabs in Delhi.” His best Delhi food memories are of kulchas and nihari from Dilli Nihari and from a place near Jama Masjid. “I also love Haldiram’s chhole bhature!” he chuckles.

Though India’s two big cities are always on his travel list, Faraz confesses to being mesmerised by Rajasthan. “There is so much inspiration there, from the architecture, to the food, to the craftsmanship or jewels,” he says.

A timeless muse

Mostly though, what Faraz loves about India is Kareena Kapoor Khan, the woman he calls his muse. “Kareena and Karisma are like family,” he says. “I was friends with Karisma, who was my brand ambassador, and then it was a natural transition to Kareena. It’s never been a business relationship between us. We like each other’s crafts, but because we are friends, it’s been a natural process, rather than a typical commercial Bollywood brand association.”

It isn’t just brand shoots and fashion shows. Faraz and Kareena have several common interests. “We connect on family values, history and food,” he says. “That’s perhaps why she is my muse. But more than anything else, I think she truly represents the subcontinent. She is a modern working mother, and she and Saif (Ali Khan) are the kind of couple the entire region can look up to for the kind of philosophy they carry.”

As a designer, Faraz views the subcontinent as one whole, rather than as composed of several countries. “For instance, fashion in the north of India and Pakistan is similar,” he points out. “Our fashion is owned jointly by our history. The culture, traditions and craftsmanship belongs to the whole subcontinent.”

There are some differences, he adds, such as the use of colour – “generally, the style of Pakistani women is controlled and elegant, whereas Indian women are experimental and open to colour. Aesthetically the Indian side is more bold, bright and cheerful” – but by and large, the overall aesthetic is the same.

Faraz’s creations are high on peaches, ivories and pastels, and are detailed with resham work and other embroideries

“Designers and buyers from the subcontinent should see our work as from the same area,” he says. “For instance, we don’t perceive fashion houses in Europe as French or Italian, we perceive them as European. In the same way, we should all perceive ourselves as subcontinental. I am great friends with Indian senior designers. They love my work, I love theirs, and we share a clientele whether it’s from India or Pakistan. So I’m in a happy spot.”

Given the political relations between India and Pakistan, his designs cannot be sold here at this time. “But I am still happy to be where I am as of now,” he says. “I am contributing to the growth of fashion from the subcontinent.”

Quintessential couturier

Faraz’s interest in designing comes from the way his parents groomed themselves – both his mother, an artist, and his father, an economist, have always paid attention to what they wear. This inspired his design aesthetic – contemporary takes on classic designs. “I love fusion and working around anything that is classic,” he says. “This is my signature style. It could be a classic fusion of the east and West, old and new. A classic outfit can always be repeated. I have done red on red for the last three or four years, and emerald green with emerald green.” Balance is an important part of his aesthetic. “When I do colour, I like to let the colour speak for itself, rather than add on more gaudy bling. On pastels, I like to do gold and silver work,” explains Faraz.

His collections always tell a story that blends together two different cultures, time zones or eras. His line Alhambra, for instance, is inspired by the palace in Spain, is a fusion of the east and the West.

Avoid lots of jewellery on a heavy outfit. Too much ornamentation takes away from the bride’s personality. With a heavy outfit, just a pair of earrings can look really nice. Or, with a heavy choker, wear little solitaires or small earrings.

Use soft make-up only. It enhances natural beauty.

Fusion really works, he says. “Europeans are now wearing my bridals done in ivory and with resham work or other subcontinental embroidery techniques,” says Faraz. “They love this fusion. The subcontinent’s embroideries are the best in the world. It is our strength, and I am playing on that.”

Faraz’s creations are high on peaches, ivories, powder blues, shades of dusty rose and onion pinks on flowy garments with fine details and ruffled sleeves or fringes.

“When I do bling or heavier work, I do it on pastels because I believe it complements the skin,” explains Faraz. “The weather of the subcontinent and Dubai is hot most of the year, making pastels easier on the eye. You can highlight them with jewellery or tone them down. There is scope for a lot of play and wearability, whereas strong colours can’t be worn often.”

He anticipates no change in his signature style for the future, and in fact, hopes to strengthen his case for classic fusion “Now let’s see how things go forward,” says Faraz.

Along the golden shoreline of Dubai, at the luxurious JA The Resort, Jebel Ali Beach, Dubai, Puneet Lahrani, Managing Director of K L Group and Jueta Hemdev, Co- founder and Partner of Yolo Entertainment and Weddings tied the knot.

The wedding celebrations of was a spectacular one! From a grand Sangeet at the luxurious JA Al Sahra Desert Resort, a sea plane entry, a floating baraat to a glamorous after party at the St. Regis in Mumbai, this wedding had it all. Dubai saw the creme de la creme of the Mumbai developers and the entertainment circuit as well as their esteemed guests from across the globe – Karan & Sonia Soorma, Aly Morani, Yasmin Morani & Noureen Morani, Mohomed Morani & Lucky Morani, Sunny & Krishika Lulla, Nikhil & Gaurie Dwivedi, Nitin & Blossom Mehta, Kamaal & Shoma Basu, Rakesh & Divya Aggrawal, Rhea Chakraborty, Simone Khambatta, Ashok Mohanani, Varun Thakur, Namrata & Samir Purohit & Anshuka Parwani amongst many others.

Their Story

Jueta and Puneet’s story began over coffee. Which eventually turned into a number of coffees, dinners and conversations that lead them to realise that they were meant for each other. Puneet formally planned a stunning proposal at his bungalow in Amby valley with close family. Younger brother and Business Partner Pratik Hemdev along with their team at Yolo Entertainment and Weddings planned and executed the most luxurious wedding for his elder sister. The team managed the extravagant 3 day affair at the stunning JA The Resort at Jebel Ali Beach, Dubai’s largest experience resort, with 1 million square meters of thrilling activities, making it an ideal destination wedding venue. Day 1, The Beach Front Brunch – Cupid D’Amour

The guests grooved to the tunes of DJ Memfisa of Niki Beach fame. Puneet and Jue- ta hovered right over the guests and entered the beachfront Mediterranean Captain’s Restaurant & Bar in a sea plane by Seawings and were escorted by the Mirror Man and Woman to the beats of the world famous water drummer, Walter Scalzone. A stunning island bar with exquisite cocktails by DrinQ by The Flaming Trio and a Sheesha bar by Hookah Royals were the makings of the perfect brunch party.

Symphony of Sands!

The second event of the day was the grand Sangeet ceremony at the JA Al Sahra Desert Resort Amphitheater situated in the heart of the desert. A stretch hummer limousine entry, photo ops with horses, camels and a falcon, belly dancers, fire drummers, the sangeet had it all and was n example of an Indo – Ara- bic fairy tale experience. Rooh Band from Dubai performed into the wee hours with his power packed performance. Dj Sumit Sethi and his band of violinists, percussion- ists, saxophonists and Dholwalas set the dance floor ablaze with his popular chart- busters.

Day 2, Baraat + Fairytale Wedding

The bride and groom had a ball at their respective baraats. Yes! the bride had her own baraat and her own baraatis. The baraatis welcomed the bride onto the Divaz floating seafood restaurant with her gorgeous bridesmaids and set out for a leisurely cruise. On the other hand the groom’s baraat started with a bang in a swanky Rolls Royce, his mobile Bar, followed by renowned DJ Sumit Sethi on his float.

The pheras were on a beachfront mandap amidst the infinity pool overlooking the beach! The set up in pink, white and gold looked surreal and picturesque. Suryaveer Hooja, renowned artist and his band aka Ehsaas, from Delhi set the Sufi metre running into the wee hours of the morning. Dj Sumit Sethi and his band then took charge with guests dancing to his chartbusters at the JA Beach Club. Dubai, especially JA The Resort at Jebel Ali Beach, Dubai truly celebrated with great pomp and show like true royalty. A never seen before spectacle to be remembered forever.

Day 3, Happy Ever After

The Happily Ever After Celebration was hosted in Mumbai at the prestigious St. Reg- is Hotel, Lower Parel, for over 1,000 guests from across the world for this grand soiree!

The highlight of this beautiful evening was the Angelic Ice Bar Sculpture, especially handcrafted by Imagine Ice for the evening, the wide selection of cocktails by The Wedding Bartenders, ballerina dancers and other entertainers. DJ Aman Nagpal made one and all rock with his popular chartbusters.

Whisky Kiss : Ceilidh Kings & Queens, from Dubai to NY, Shanghai, Gleneagles & More

“The one thing you absolutely need at a wedding is a brilliant ceilidh, right after dinner, to get everyone up on the dancefloor!" That was the view of TV's Gok Wan, after we performed at a wedding with him at the fabulous Strawberry Barn (East Lothian) earlier this year. "What a difference, as it's usually so hard for a DJ to get people up for the first hour. With a ceilidh the dance floor was packed from the first dance onwards".

It was the first time Gok had seen Whisky Kiss in action, and he later told us "I really didn't know what to expect, but, wow, I couldn't believe the energy. It was amazing!"

At Whisky Kiss we just love a ceilidh! You have to be passionate about what you do, right?

To that end, our two main pipers had the rare honour of BOTH making it to the final of the BBC Young Trad Musician of the Year Award 2018, and our fiddler (Murray Fergusson) is the only Scots musician to have led an orchestra at the Sydney Opera House, and played the Pyramid Stage Glastonbury and live with Jools Holland on the beeb. We are really proud of all their individual achievements, and grateful to them (and their predecessors) and indeed all the lovely brides & grooms who book Whisky Kiss for their weddings, that they have given us such a lot of amazing experiences, all around the world.

We love to put in the attention to detail...and to see the results all come to fruition on our brides' and grooms' Big Day.

If you were to ask "what do you mean by that" or "ok, give me an example", we just love to go the extra mile for our couples! We had one wedding, a truly spectacular affair, where the bride wanted a modern twist on the old Scottish traditions. This was a real family celebration, so she also had a lot of young nieces and nephews coming and wanted something that would grab their attention in between the ceilidh dances. We worked up a show with the Scottish champion breakdancers, where our band played hip-hop & bagpipes, while the 3 acrobatic breakdance champions wowed the crowd with their moves. When a couple of the toddlers, getting carried away with the noise and the drama and the excitement of it all, started to wander onto the dance floor, the bride, Megan Davidson, later told us "we were worried the young kids might interrupt the performance, but, before we knew it the Whisky Kiss team had incorporated the kids into the show, and made them feel really special. They made a fuss of the wee ones, it brought the house down. It could not have been more perfect if it had been planned".

Ceilidhs are amazingly popular social occasions worldwide, way beyond Scotland's shores, and we have been so lucky to have the amazing opportunity to perform at venues such as the Dubai Polo Club, Atlantis the Palm in Dubai, Shanghai in China, on Broadway in Manhattan, Beijing, Singapore and Florence.

One of those, for Carissa Cowley (an Aussie with Scottish heritage) and her Syrian husband Bassem Nimah, at the Dubai Polo Club, was on paper one of the more challenging sets of requests...we were to bring a ceilidh (which next to no guests in attendance would have danced before); and then to bring a DJ set; and, finally, to incorporate some traditional Syrian tunes and dancing in one segment of the night too! We were like "wow", how cool [but how challenging too, right!].

What. A. Night! It was totally unforgettable and we still keep up with Carissa & Bassem, who are now working over in Thailand and the Maldives (tough shift!) and we keep hinting that an anniversary ceilidh would be just the ticket (well, shy kids get no chocolate!)

The key to a good ceilidh (apart from the passionate and lovely musicians, dancers and performers) is a good ceilidh dance caller. Our dance caller, Iain, happens to be the current "voice of Visit Scotland", narrating on three videos/adverts for VIsit Scotland showing worldwide.

We were honoured to be asked by Visit Scotland to produce their international hit video "Ceilidh Experience". Our drummer, Laurence with the filmstar looks, even jumped out from behind his kit to be the "leading man" and showed off his acting (and dancing) skills. Visit Scotland often show him and the rest of our team on the giant advertising screen at Waverley Station, so, on behalf of all the band, we apologise to commuters everywhere for having to witness that.

So, that's a brief introduction to what we think makes for a great ceilidh at your wedding - we would typically recommend a first half ceilidh (ideal for first timers and experienced aficionados alike), with then some band-and-DJ mashups/covers, then taking us into a final hour where the DJ takes the full dancefloor and bangs out the tunes through til Carriages. It helps when you love what you do, and I am very lucky to have a team that excel in that regard!
