Queer Jews Project Day 1 - Brenda Howard
Best to kick off Pride Month with one of the people who was instrumental in organizing the first Pride: Brenda Howard, aka “The Mother of Pride”. A lifelong activist and prolific organizer, Brenda was a proud bisexual, proud kinkster and proud jew. She wore a pin that said “Bi, Poly, Switch — I know what I want.”

Credit: Anything That Moves / The poem continues, but the point is clear from the start: Bisexual people aren't believed for who they are. They're belittled and told to "choose a side," that they're bisexual for attention. It's difficult to think that this poem is over 30 years old. The poem "truly could've been written yesterday... or 50 years ago," said Marshall. "How long do we have to keep screaming the same things to the world over and over until people stop pretending we're speaking another galaxy's language?" --- The solace of Anything That Moves, however, is that even though progress has been slow, fellow bisexual people can relate to the shared experience detailed in its pages.:https://www.tumblr.com/yourartmatters-itswhatgotmehere/770848263124500480?source=share

Theres a lot of biphobia and hate against polyam people, and many question their place in the queer comminity, their validity in belonging. Like we aren't queer in the "right way". You don't hear much about prominent bisexuals in the early gay rights movement.
I want to talk about Brenda Howard, someone I had never heard about until recently.
Brenda Howard was a jewish, bisexual, polyamorous woman born in 1946, in the Bronx. She was involved in the feminist movement as well as the anti-war movement. She lived in an intentional community.
After Stonewall, she participated in a commemorative march, and a year later she organized the Christopher Street Liberation Day Parade, as well as a week full of events, for the 1 year anniversary of the Stonewall riots.
The first pride was organized by a Jewish, Bisexual, Polyamorous woman. She was called "The Mother of Pride"
She was very active in the Coalition for Lesbian and Gay rights, and helped found the New York Area Bisexual Network. She founded the first Alcoholics Anonymous chapter for bisexual folk. She worked on the March for Washington Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Rights in 1993, and fought to have "bisexual" included in that. She was female co-chair of the leather contigent (yep, she fought for kinksters too)
She participated in ACT UP protests in support of people living with HIV/AIDS.
She was a member of The Gay Liberation Front, and chair of the Gay Activists Alliance Speakers Bureau
She died of cancer in 2005, and in her memory and honor, PFLAG created The Brenda Howard Award, for people doing amazing work for the bisexual community.
Maybe everyone already knew about her already and I was the only one who didnt, but as a bisexual polyamorous woman myself, Im hurt it took me this long to find this out about her, and I hope maybe some other person will see this and learn something new.
As the button she wore said,
"Bi, Poly, Switch- I'm not greedy, I know what I want."

#I cant be the only one who didnt know about her#especially since I hear so much about bi and polyam people not being a part of the community or not being queer in the RIGHT way#I see a lot of bi erasure in people's recountings of the early gay rights movement#we've always been here#bisexual#Brenda Howard

Pride began as a protest against police violence. It evolved into celebration on the anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. It is widely reported that the first people to resist the police in 1969 were unhoused "street kids," and that the movement grew to include "hustlers" and other sex workers, as well as drag queens and drag kings. Stormé DeLaverie, a biracial butch and drag king, is frequently thought to have inspired the violent backlash to police for their rough treatment of her when she was placed under arrest. Some of the most famous figures to become well known following the days-long uprising included Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson. Brenda Howard, a bisexual, polyamorous, and kink positive feminist, is often called the "Mother of Pride." Howard and a committee planned the first Gay Pride Week and the Christopher Street Liberation Day Parade to mark the one year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. This first parade rapidly grew from a small gathering to a 20-block long mass of marchers and became an annual event in years to follow. Pride grew from a movement of the most marginalized against police brutality. Commemorate Stonewall and the origins of Pride this month in its wholeness and its diversity. #PrideMonth #Pride #Stonewall [A purple graphic with a vertical rainbow on the left side. The rainbow has a white heart in the center. On the right, in rainbow colors, is text that reads, "Pride Month Reminder We Owe Pride To: Unhoused people, sex workers, drag performers, people of color, and bisexuals."]

The morning after, as Brenda picks up the pieces of broken plate, a lot goes through her mind:
Charlie definitely put something in those brownies.
A hangover from marijuana feels different from a booze hangover, but it still leaves her with a headache.
It’s weird that Fritz gets so mad at her all the time about leaving her wine glass out over night if he’s just gonna leave sharp shards of dish ware in the middle of the floor for her to step on.
The bandaid on her foot is already peeling off.
She hates cleaning.
She wishes she hadn’t finished off the cheez curls last night because she really wants some now.
She might still be a little high.
Those brownies were delicious though.
Captain Raydor would never break things and kick Charlie out of her house, no matter how mad she got.
Captain Raydor has pretty hair.
Why is she thinking about Captain Raydor all of a sudden and why can’t she seem to stop?
Charlie appears in the doorway looking sullen. “Aunt Brenda? Please don’t send me home.”
It’s not an apology but Brenda takes pity on the girl anyway. She’s the one who had to deal with Fritz’ wrath last night. Maybe she’s been punished enough. She crosses the room with the broom and dustpan in one hand and uses the other to pull Charlie into her side. “Don’t worry, honey, you’re not goin’ anywhere.”
Fritz, on the other hand, Brenda isn’t so sure about.
