A lot of people are only kind to people that have been kind to them. Understandable, but that leaves too many out of the kindness loop. When I say kind, I don’t mean friendly. I mean active kindness. Asking someone how they are because you want to know how to help them have a better time, offering someone a snack, helping them with their chores, telling them that you appreciate their efforts. So many have been outside the kindness loop they genuinely think that the majority of people are selfish, petty, and uncaring.
We should not need to be reminded to act with consideration and respect. We should not need to be reminded that our feelings should not be the reason someone else’s day is miserable. And we most definitely should not take our own bad time out on someone else. Being consistently kind and respectful is often brave as many see unconditional compassion and care as a sign of naivety or submission. When others try to take advantage of your good will you must remember that humility and generosity is not passivity or self neglect. You cannot be a kind person while allowing others to harm you as that is unkindness towards yourself. You are responsible for your care first. I am kind and I am unyielding.
You do not need to be happy to be kind. You do not need to smile or laugh or joke. You can be grumpy and give someone a glass or orange juice because their blood sugar is low. You can not laugh at the joke but hold onto the inference that the joker is obsessed with penguins and draw one on a sticky note for them while waiting for a work update. You hold someone’s place in line while they rush off the restroom even though you’re sad.
It’s fucking awful that many of us are starting to think that people that are purposely kind are exceptions to the rule that humans are the worst. We are not the worst, but capitalism wants us to act like it so that we don’t look out for each other. We’re surrounded by the chaos of artificial lights, metal and plastic machines, and money and we’re taught by this confusion that we don’t belong anywhere when we do! We make up this society, we can control how much it hurts to be perceived. We are allowed to stop moving and regulate our heartbeat, and see the bodies around us as whole beings, just as deserving of relief as our loved ones. When we are with the ones we love we are intentional and helpful and generous. We are not awful, we know how to be someone others can breathe freely around. We live in groups so that we don’t have to fear for our survival. Let’s act like it.
