Does a period offend you? Througout my wife’s pregnancy, I was immersed in spaces where women talked about their bodies’ natural functions, but somewhere in between, they all had to look at me, and apologize as if they were offending me. As if their natural stories were something to be embarrassed about. As if my masculine ears could not bear to hear about menstruation, and feeding an infant. Immediately, I would respond something along the line of, “No, no need to apologize,” or “That’s totally normal,” but I always felt... strange afterwards. Today marks year one of our breastfeeding journey. To celebrate here are some fun facts about baby feeding: 1)breastfeeding for a year reduces your risk of breast cancer by 5% 2)breastfeeding strengthens both baby and mother's immune systems. The glands in the areola absorb pathogens from your babies saliva and trigger an immune response in the mother so the antibodies will be present in the milk 3)World Health Organization recommends mothers breastfeed until 2 years old if they can/are willing. The benefits of breastmilk go beyond infancy and help toddlers get more complete nutrition as they transition to solid foods as a primary source of calories. 4)the endorphins released during a nursing session help combat depression, especially PPD and help mothers bond with their babies by providing positive reinforcement in the form of happy chemicals. I am so grateful to have been able to make it this far and am hopeful that we can continue for as long as we are both willing. To all the mamas out there feeding their babies in the best way for them, I have all the respect in the world; our babies are loved happy and have full bellies and that's what's most important.
