It was 1 p.m. before I was ready to go downstairs and look about – 1st peeped into the kitchen – 3 women in it – all neat and tidy 3 set boilers – on square raised perhaps 2ft. high with fires underneath as at the house of the Madgebourg Lady’s sisterhood – then to the Glacière (Ice house) – at the near end of a long line of wood building ending in sheds – a. doorway opening up ladder straight forward leading down to where the ice is put in – sometimes an archine = 28 English inch thicker the thicker the better – b. opening into little landing with ladder (left) leading low doorway in the glacière logwall by which down to a little [?] may be taken out – discend perhaps 12ft. (by a good step ladder) to a level with where the ice is put in and let to fall to the bottom 7ft. lower (7+12 = 19ft. from the surface of the ground to bottom of glacière) – alongside the ladder was suspended from a beam above a long shelf, on which to set anything to keep cool in summer – with breadth of ladder and space where the shelf hung, there would be 4ft. space between the outside plank wall and the inside glacière – log-wall which logwall went down to the bottom of the glacière, floored with wood – no drain – the floor laid on sand and any water there might be drained off into the sand – i.e. the national guard all sand – the outside wall, from the surface of the ground down to the level of the icehouse floor, rough (random) stone walled with mortar – c. door opening into washhouse large chimney and fire hearth on the side next ice-house, and in the far corner same side a large oven-like door set about 3ft. from the ground opening into a chimney (flue) to let the steam out – there was a large raised brick work bench joining up to this oven which bench might be a sort of hot hearth for drying? the 2 washhouse windows looked out from the side next to c – beyond this washhouse and at the other end of the glacière, was another ladder and open space like the one before named, and at the foot of the ladder a little low door into cellar opening to the left into the glacière, and this the way they commonly use to get ice out – up against the logwall of the icehouse alongside the ladder were shelves and empty barrels ranged on them and in going down left near top of the ladder stood the barrel of cucumbers salés – like a Roman cement barrel, but longer, standing on one end, and the other end open – a layer of flannel, said our interprete Gross, or mulberry or vine leaves or any others is laid between each layer of cucumbers, and then the barrel is filled up with salt water

Salt to their taste, and left to stand – the water never changed – the ground plan of the ice house seemed to be as under and supposing ice house the staircase a. b. leads up to the wash house chimney  c which communicates pleasure by a barrel carried into a little meat smoking closet   S (full of hams etc.) from which the smoke eventually escapes by a chimney at the opposite end of S – the door into S fronts the top window in the gabel vis. last page –

Perhaps Icehouse = 5x4 yards filled perhaps 7x3ft. deep there is probably a log or boarded floor over it, and a sort of store room entered from the offside? side O. I did not think of asking to look at this side – at any rate the ice-house is a loghouse floored (and ceiled?) with wood apparently abutting up to the stone-wall against the wash-house  but perhaps (I should probably) not up to the wall of the O side if there be a little passage between it and the O side wall, then perhaps the ice-house is 4x4 yards by 7x3ft. deep – the ice is not broken or rammed down but put in large masses 1, 2, 3ft. square – In spring when there is a heat of R10° then the ice leaves the sides of the house and fond into one solid mass, but there is no water – or what there is sinks into the sand – the Herschen = kama = millet – Our landlord churns his own butter; [?] churnstaff churn (beats it up and down) charged us ./70 per lb. – for 2 1/8 lb. – lastly shewed us his vegetable cellar – down 10 or 12 or 8 or 9? steps – then several passages in the sand ground with large 18 or 20 in. tubs arranged [catacombrise] – the tubs full of sand, and the vegetables plunged in them with their roots, cabbages up to the cabbage-part nearly – [?] plunged to the same height that we should earth it in our gardens – carrots – all sorts of vegetables – I forgot to inquire about potatoes – but from the sweet fresh taste of those we had at dinner yesterday and before, it is not improbable the potatoes are in growing – I did not see the little “machine” said Gross with which the cabbage was cut in such fine shreds for the salad   but it must be on the principle of our hay-straw-[butter] – a small knife that works up and down  - this vegetable cellar is excellent – they exclude the air as much as they can – but there is no damp on the wood – the ground is all a dry sand – at Shibden all is clay – the clay should be removed and there should be an underground ventilation in 1 or 2 passages around the nucleus of a cellar – Just took another peep at the Caucasians – perhaps they stand 2ft. 2, 3, or 4 in. high? the muzzle is very singular – very broad; and the animal seems to delight in drawing it away which gives him a droll look – more like deer than Goat? at any rate the [?] quarters in particular – a little like the bouquetin des Alpes? but as to snout and countenance very singular – rather ape-like face?

Steam Ascension

Here is another 1000 word long practice story. No real polish or editing, just wrote it for fun and to keep my skills sharp. The inspirations for this story are both the steampunk genre, and that pseudoscience trope of humans evolving into beings of pure energy. “You see, as water is heated it turns to steam, which expands inside a boiler until the pressure grows too great, after which it—”

“—I know how steam engines work,” Evita interrupted, “you do remember I am an engineer working on the Haitian Railroad. The whole reason I tracked you down was because your mercenaries robbed our trains.” The black woman stared down her captor, even as her fingers tried to scratch and scrape at the leather and brass restraints securing her to a chair. The chair and her were surrounded by a glass chamber with a copper spiral coiled around its outside. Evita could feel thick oozing sweat vent from her pores like a locomotive’s exhaust.

“Right, that little project your new country is attempting—”

“—Haiti has been independent for five decades now—”

“—is nothing compared to this,” Doctor Lloyd interrupted, as the white woman adjusted the lens on her glasses, before beginning to twist her dials and pulling levers. Evita felt her breath grow harder, as the mad Doctor began to turn up the devices, and the copper wiring began to glow.

“I must admit I was a bit impressed with your knowledge of engineering, I did not think Haitians were capable of such a creation. Still I think you would appreciate that I have no reason to dissect that patchwork, even with his occasional tricks he is clearly no threat.” Doctor Lloyd gestured with her hand towards Smith, who was growling at her from within a brass cage.

The dog had been mangled years ago in a factory accident, abandoned by the factory he had once guarded. Evita had taken the dying dog and mended him, building him new legs and organs out of brass and leather. And in return Smith helped her remember to eat and take care of her daily needs, helped lug around her tools, and act as a constant companion.

“But while you know engineering, anatomy is beyond you. You see, the human body is ninety percent water. Imagine if we could tap into that water, harness it as a power?”

“So what, you are going to use me as fuel?”

“I’m going to make you a god,” Doctor Lloyd laughed, before flipping the final switch. Evita flinched and shudders in pain as moisture covered the inside of the glass container, sweat boiling off of her, she couldn’t even moan as her body shuddered.”

“Imagine what the Monarchies of Europe would pay for their soldiers to have the sheer power of a boiler inside them, for their kings to live as long as they had access to water. Even America and the Qing would beg for my transformative apparatus.”

“You’re mad.” Evita struggled to say as her heart pounded in her chest, struggling to endure as she felt her whole body quiver and sweat.

“No, I simply will release humanity from their chrysalis and let their true form emerge in all its beauty. The beauty of steam.” And then the condensation around the glass chamber fogged it up, obscuring Evita from Doctor Lloyd’s sight.
