BLACK MIRROR S7 EP3 - REACTION
youtube
I had a fun time reacting to this episode of Black Mirror 'Hotel Reverie' S7 Ep3 and I was NOT expecting the sapphic storytelling to be this intense. Kinda reminds me of another Black Mirror sapphic ep San Junipero (which won an Emmy by the way). So enjoy my funny and insightful takes on this episode starring Issa Rae and Emma Corrin, who had great chemistry (even though some may think differently)

So of course I watched the new season of Black Mirror and I have to say “Hotel Reverie” was the best episode this season. This made me laugh, fall in love and cry. Honestly they should have a full series for that one episode. Brandy x Dorothy actually has my heart and they were utterly heartbreaking but phenomenal.

Black Lives Matter: A Reading List
On this blog, we believe Black Lives Matter. I’ve been quiet here because I’ve just been absorbing and listening and loud on other platforms. But I wanted to take the time and share some books by Black authors that may not be on your radar, books besides The Hate U Give and Dear Martin and Children of Blood and Bone (though I hope you’re reading those too, you’ve probably heard of them at this point). It also won’t just be books about Black pain because Black people have a huge range of experiences and they all deserve to be heard.
All the links in this post will go to Mahogany Books, a Black owned bookstore in Washington, D.C. that does ship. If I can’t find it on their website, the link will go to Semicolon Bookstore, another Black owned indie bookstore, this one located in Chicago’s, Bookshop page. Please note that many books are currently backordered because there’s a huge rush on books by Black authors (especially anti-racist books) right now and there was already a paper shortage and delays in printing because of COVID-19. If that’s the case, check your local library’s digital resources or check other bookstores since they all have varying stock.

FIGHT OR FLIGHT X SUICIDE; OUR STORY: BROTHERS AND MOTORCYCLES PART II
A SPECIAL CANIVERSUM EVENT
AUTHORED BY JOSEPH M.
SOME TIME IN 2001
While unruly parents brawled and senselessly accused each other, a young woman helped her sister untangle her hair with a hair comb, perched on a tree. Lice and marbled decor loosened from mangled hair strains, tumbling onto the branches below. The young woman spotted a horrified, trembling girl, curled up next to a plethora of plush-eyed, cotton-stuffed rhinos, lions, and bears. The young woman spotted the girl running from her bedroom into the kitchen, bravely defending her mother from the abusive father. Her father plucked a bottle of ginger ale from the counter and smashed the glass over her neck.
“Je t’aime, Jessie,” said the mother. “Je t’aime beaucoup.”
“Je t’aime aussi, maman.” The daughter comforted her mother, while the father unbuckled his belt, and while two women, Dorothy and Lucia Hoffs, surveilled from the woods.
Dorothy climbed down the pines, scampering into Jessie’s mother’s kitchen, blurting out, “Hey Miss Armstrong.”
“Who are you?” stammered the daughter.
Dorothy unzipped her coat, revealing two curvy daggers lhidden inside her jacket. “I’m Lady Daggers. You’re Jessie Armstrong, adopted daughter of Diana and Brett Phillis.”
“What’re you saying?” Brett yanked his daughter by her scarf. “How’d you know our names, creep?”
“My partner Lucia and I were surveilling the area. I’m Lady Daggers: an enforcer for the Esmugos; they’re a vigilante law enforcement team around these parts,” said Lady Daggers. “Kandi tells me you’re not being a good father and husband.” Abruptly, Lady Daggers skewered Brett with her daggers; they carved into beefy, tender pulmonary valve, puncturing the heart, and her arms bent somehow; the right kidney burst and urine, blood, and water entered the still blood stream; then into the intestines, dislodging clunky, misshapen, undigested, and broken wings of chicken; then out the rectum, where her gore-smothered hands clenching daggers and the undigested chicken wings, smeared in unreleased bowel surplus, bearing resemblance to crumbly brownies and gooey fudge.
Diana mourned over Brett’s corpse. “Who the hell are you?”
“People like your husband, Brett, created the world that birthed me, who forged the daggers that killed him. Brett woke up in the world created by his fathers, and decided to ruin it. I woke up in the world he left behind, and decided that if I was gonna burn in the world he made, he should fucking burn too. I am Dorothy Hoffs; I am not the pain that birthed me; I am pain.”
After giving the eulogy, Lady Daggers sheathed the bloody daggers.
Jessie, who awaited her, seated on the front porch, asked childishly, “What happened?”
“Your father abused you, then your foster father abused you; your fathers won’t abuse you anymore.”
Brandy explained, “Wolves have the strength and prowess he wanted, but they’re so dumb; and men are smart, but so weak and untalented, so Ramnez and Keshin decided to create something with the best capabilities of both wolves and men. Lizards are stealthy and nimble, so I modified the DNA of the men and werewolves, and created man-lizards and were-lizards: the genetically superior werewolves made so much better, all with my improvements.”
“Your Frankenstein experiments are hacking biology,” Jessie retorted, drawing her revolver. “You’re turning them into monsters.”
“I’m saving humanity, Jessie.”
“You’re destroying it.” Jessie forced her pistols against Brandy’s forehead. “Modifying genetics is dangerous, and you never know what you’ll create.”
“I tried to give you only Purgatory, Jessie: punishment, while also a chance to forfeit and become a were-lizard too; however, now I see that’s not what you need. You don’t need Purgatory, Jessie. You need a permanent solution: termination.”
“There are three graves, mayor.” Hoffs unsheathed her daggers from her pouch. “One for your pride, one for your greed, and one for your skin.”
“But this isn’t my funeral, cowards.” Brandy drew his cutlass from his tattered scabbard, hooked to his leather belt, anchoring his left heel against the pavement.
“Yet… your funeral…” Williams’ silver longsword appeared midair, clashing against Brandy’s cutlass. “Your funeral has just begun.” Lady Daggers’ blades slashed Hughsonnes’ knees; Sharpshot Jess unloaded magazine after magazine, bullets penetrating his jacket, and they punctured his bones and arteries. The mayor tried his best to parry Williams’ and Hoff’s ambushes, blocking Williams’ repeated, aggressive slashes, but he stumbled into a bush.
“Damn it.” Brandy thought. The mayor recoiled from the shrubbery. He brushed off some leaves, positioned himself, then relentlessly pecked at Justin’s dominant right shoulder. Dorothy promptly staggered in, hacking Brandy’s skull clean off; then the waves carried it away, then it sank in the trenches of the Vanilla Sea, obscured by lively clownfish, seahorses, and coral, and the quickly withering skin floated to the surface along with hazy drops of blood, or was nibbled and suckled on, and hollowed out by passing sharks and their pups, or hungry, wild, dumb packs of piranhas.
“Justin, you’ve been marked absent eight times this week amongst several teachers,” said the counselor. “You’re ditching your classes again.”
“I’m ditching my classes for a reason,” Justin replied to xem. “Lieutenant Armstrong and Lieutenant Hoffs need me.”
“This shouldn’t interfere with your studies again, or I’m calling them to force you to resign.”
“I’m something when I’m with them. You cannot just take that away from me.” Justin got up from his chair, and slung his duffle bag on his arm. “They made me family.”
“They’re good people and you are too, Justin,” xe muttered to Justin, attempting to comfort him. “You don’t need to do extraordinary things to prove you aren’t extra-ordinary. You’re extraordinary.”
“I am not extraordinary.”
“That’s what you tell yourself, because you haven’t truly made amends with your past. Talk to Jasper, and make peace with him.”
Justin mumbled, “I don’t owe him forgiveness.”
“No, you owe yourself peace,” the counselor responded. “And he owes you an apology. I can’t make him forgive you though… that’s a choice you’ll have to make on your own.”
“He hacked a guy to bits and ditched him in the school dumpster, ending up nearly getting me into trouble,” said Justin. “If he won’t apologize, I won’t forgive him.”

Wimsey found some consolation in this. At any rate, he so far pulled himself together as to be the life and soul of the rather restrained revels at Duke’s Denver. The Duchess Helen, indeed, observed rather acidly to the Duke that Peter was surely getting too old to play the buffoon, and that it would be better if he took things seriously and settled down.
“Oh, I dunno,” said the Duke, “Peter’s a weird fish—you never know what he’s thinkin’ about. He pulled me out of the soup once and I’m not going to interfere with him. You leave him alone, Helen.”
Lady Mary Wimsey, who had arrived late on Christmas Eve, took another view of the matter. She marched into her younger brother’s bedroom at 2 o’clock on the morning of Boxing Day. There had been dinner and dancing and charades of the most exhausting kind. Wimsey was sitting thoughtfully over the fire in his dressing-gown.
“I say, old Peter,” said Lady Mary, “you’re being a bit fevered, aren’t you? Anything up?”
“Too much plum-pudding,” said Wimsey, “and too much county. I’m a martyr, that’s what I am—burning in brandy to make a family holiday.”
--Dorothy L. Sayers, Strong Poison (1930), Chapter XII.
“Burning in brandy to make a family holiday” is a play on a line from Canto IV of “Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage” (1812-1818) by Lord Byron, in which he imagines an unnamed gladiator “butchered to make a Roman holiday!” (x) Plum puddings were traditionally soaked in brandy and ceremonially set on fire at serving-time. (x)
The title of Busman’s Honeymoon merges the same line with the idiom “busman’s holiday,” meaning to spend a holiday engaged in behavior similar to one’s usual occupation, whether driving a bus or solving murders. (x)
Boxing Day, the day after Christmas, traditionally saw gifts to tradespeople by their clients and employers to their servants. (x)
