We, The Fans
I recently saw the below tweet ‘retweeted’ by Bradley Bredeweg that angers me more than it should.
The role of fans has changed, 10, 15 20, even 30 years ago the only way to be a fan of a show was to watch and in our millions we did. Inspector Morse, a UK detective show that ran for 13 years claimed that it had been seen by one billion people worldwide, something that is unheard of now. However today social media has become a massive factor in our viewing.
When a show airs we’re told to ‘join the cast on twitter’ or see a video on facebook or see behind the scenes photos on Instagram. The creators of the shows are involved and then we are told to stop telling them what they should and shouldn’t put in THEIR shows
Hang on a minute.
You can deal with the praise and ass licking but the moment someone disagrees or doesn’t like what you’re doing, you fragile egos cannot take and we are told to shut up and sit down.
As a Fosters fan that was purely watching for the amazing relationship of Stef and Lena Adams Foster, I’ve seen this first hand. As views/fans, we are invited to talk to the showrunners, writers, creators, and actors on Twitter week in and week out while the show was airing. However the moment we disagreed with something or pointed out that it was getting unrealistic we were wrong.
Their show was ‘groundbreaking’ ‘hard-hitting’ and a ‘front-runner’ no, in the end, it became a political soapbox for the writers who were putting characters into situations that were getting silly.
When we asked for more affection between Stef and Lena a certain ‘writer, creator, director,’ basically told us to go and watch porn. That’s not what we were asking for. If you watch Season one and the end of season 5c you see a very affectionate Stef and Lena. the fact season 1b, 2a, 2b and most of 3a is basically the two women butting heads and not even really connecting at all is something hard to watch. If they had been a real-life couple this would not have been the case.
Fans now have a say. they can tell creators what they think, good, bad, ugly.
We don’t like being misled, which is what happened with the Mama spin-off. We were given false hope and then another ‘creator, writer, director’ had her ego bruised so badly she decided to tell us to raise the $30million dollars and she would make it. I hate to tell you, Joanna, if I raised $30million to make it I wouldn’t employ you. You’re complicit in getting your own show canceled to make a spin-off that NO ONE asked for but you writers and the two NEW leads
Ego seems to the be the big thing here. if you are saying the right things and licking their asses. You’re in. but the moment you say ‘hey wait this isn't what I wanted or started watching for’ you get blocked or ignored.
My main message is fan can MAKE or BREAK you. Without us, you have no job. You can hide in your bubble while you make a serious but without people sitting down to watch the show you have nothing but a canceled show. Don’t lead your fans on, don’t use one set of fans to get others involved. I’m still shocked that Joanna Johnson had no idea so many older lesbians were watching the Fosters for Stef and Lena. open your eyes woman.
Don’t bite the hand that feeds, the network may be paying you but without the fans you really are nothing.

I still follow them all on twitter for my sins. It’s all so fake; Cierra ‘we feel like a family already’ it’s been 2 weeks c’mon. Peter Paige - name five women in Hollywood you want to write for - names his new cast. Bradley Bredeweg - our new family. I get they are happy and entitled to be so but it’s such a kick in the teeth to The Fosters fans whose favs are no more. The ones who lost their jobs so they could continue to prosper. I’ll never not be salty over the whole thing.
They are so fake. They can say what they want but if you make a family in 2 weeks, you are faking and what you call family, I don’t. It devalues what has been and makes it look fake. At least I know Sherri and Teri are family to each other. The rest was bullshit.
Anonymous said: Bet Maia and Cierra got a big pay rise. Ex producers, Jesus 🙄 We know where Sherri and Teri’s wages went 🤬
We can’t afford the show anymore, but we’ll pay these two more to make an inferior show. Lies. Ageism. Lesbophobia.
Anonymous said: Are Teri and Sherri really going to appear in the spinoff do we know? I really hope not after seeing their new cast. Imagine stepping into that after you were the leads previously. The whole crew is the same too. I don’t think I could do it personally. X
We don’t know. It’s looking very likely though. I don’t think I could do it. They are bigger people than I am.
Anonymous said: Hey! Thanks for continuing this blog, its always an interesting read, I find out everything. My feeling on everything truly is that Bradley Bredeweg or Peter Paige never ever truly appreciated Sherri or Teri. Honestly really feel that. Cierra and Maia, totally different story. You could always see it. Joanna Johnson I feel she did to a degree and feels guilty now. Think she’s the one pushing for a mom’s episode not those two. If it doesn’t come off theyll just quote scheduling, they won’t care.
Thank you! Joana... sigh. She is as bad if not worse. She should know better, but instead she writes shit for the moms (yeah I don’t forgive episode 21 and is out there pimping this trashy spin off. if you think using them for a an episode of the shit show is caring about Teri and Sherir, then you don’t know what caring is. She’s a user like the rest of them. lining their pockets.
Anonymous said: Fform’s new flagship show Cloak and Dagger is already getting less views than the Fosters even with all the promo. The Bold Type, that I enjoy is still getting super low figures.why oh why did they cancel the 1 show that was stable? It can’t just b because the fform wants 2 have young shows? Really? They have advertisers 2 satisfy. It makes no sense. Can’t imagine the Fosters was that expensive to run in comparison 2 others shows so why? Will always remain a mystery as no 1 will tell the truth.
I don’t know what special hatred they had for the show because it didn’t deserve cancellation. The Bold Type has always been at the bottom and their new shows start strong and then start nose diving. I will wait patiently for this network to crumble.
Anonymous said: Should have ended the Fosters with those last eps. Good Trouble will always be compared and people will always mention missing the moms and the boys. They’ll try and make us forget them over time and move on but it won’t happen. They will at most get two seasons and that will be it. The two girls aren’t that popular alone and unless their new cast members pull it out of the bag nothing will recreate what they had with their original and best cast! It was them that kept the audience coming back.
2 seasons are almost a certainty, Freeform has nothing going for it and renews everything. I think the show could have been something if it had been a spin off, a true spin off of talent behind the scenes and in front of our screens, instead of the Fosters - actual magic (the moms). Certain failure it will be.
Anonymous said: Will be pissed eternally at the writers and the creators of The Fosters. The show was about two moms bringing up their kids. Turned into a political fanfare for them to gain praise. There could have between a happy medium between the two, instead they marginalised the moms roles and screen time and pushed Callie white knight saviour to the fore front. They got what they wanted in the end a new show totally revolving around her character. It was always the plan from early season 4 I bet you!!!!!
You could see that they were trying to erase Teri and Sherri in promotion and on the screen. If not for the backlash, I think they would have just deleted them from the show.
Anonymous said: Miss Teri and Sherri / Stef and Lena already 😢 would love someone to sign them up to a show, don’t care if they play different characters. Just stick it to Freefall and all involved in the shit show that will be the spinoff! They are too good for them anyways imo.
I would hope someone would do that. Just a shame that our world hates older women and lesbians.

Bradley Bredeweg on Brallie It seems fitting to bring this one back. With all the hate in the tag lately. We can remember what the co-creator, producer showrunner, writer, and director of The Foster’s thinks.
Thank you @bfostr for posting this on twitter again today.

Robert’s Wish Founder Lisa Hunter Tells Us More About The New Non-Profit.
July 2017
The office is buzzing with excitement today. We are interviewing someone who has been a huge support to many of us. I first met Lisa a few years ago, at the Harrow Social club and immediately felt her warmth and kindness. For those of you who don’t know, Lisa is the founder of a non-profit called Robert’s Wish.
“Robert’s Wish is a purpose driven non-profit organization focused on providing a safe, confidential, non-judgmental online social community for youth who are being bullied. The community connects people who need to feel heard, who need a few words on encouragement and where differences are celebrated. Our community is a place where people feel heard, validated and accepted simply for being themselves.”
“The non-profit connects youth across different community groups such as LGBTQ youth, youth in foster homes, or any young person who just needs a few words of encouragement from people who understand their situation, who have experienced it or who have a sympathetic ear and are willing to listen via our online mentors. The community environment is aimed at building confidence, promoting a feeling of not being alone, that no struggle is trivial and of being heard.”
Lisa joins us via Skype from Chicago in the US, where she currently lives and where Robert’s Wish is based. We are greeted with a huge warm smile and a mixed South African British accent.
To start off the interview, let’s give a quick summary of who Lisa is.
Born and raised in South Africa, Lisa is the eldest daughter of the late Donald (died ‘98) and Maureen Hunter. Lisa lived in the UK for 9 years, Geneva Switzerland for 5 and more recently Chicago for 2 and a half years. Lisa works for Ipsos Insight, a global market research agency in their media, brand and communications division. Lisa has been a LGBTQ youth mentor for the last 2 years, a strong ally and advocate for equality.
We are eager to hear more about how Robert’s Wish started, Lisa explains.
“Robert’s Wish has had an interesting journey so far. As you know, the charity is named after my childhood friend Robert who came out later in life and faced severe rejection and isolation. Sadly, he passed away but his one request was that I find a way to ensure anyone struggling does not feel alone. Robert was a huge fan of the US TV drama The Fosters, a show that tells the story of a diverse, real to life family that is led by two mothers played by Teri Polo and Sherri Saum. This show tackles real, relevant topics that families of today face. It is a show about a typical family but it appeals to people from all walks of life. It is real, it is superbly written and acted and is so needed, especially in today’s society. Executive Producers Peter Paige, Bradley Bredeweg and Joanna Johnson have done an incredible job producing a show that literally makes a difference to so many. It touches peoples lives and makes an impact.
I met Teri and Sherri for the first time at an event in Los Angeles not long after Robert had passed away. Firstly, to meet these two inspirational women was a dream come true for me but also to meet two people that had provided Robert with a light when he needed it the most was a very emotional thing for me. I had written a letter to them both on behalf of Robert to say thank you for the comfort that they had given Robert in his darkest time and how much it meant so they knew who I was talking about when I mentioned him. It was during this initial meeting that they encouraged me to start Robert’s Wish. I met them again at the GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles in April 2016 and again they were so lovely and open and again gave more support and encouragement to me to move forward with Robert’s Wish. I met Peter Paige at the same event and he was just lovely and also voiced support for what we were doing. They are a huge part of what got me started on the Robert’s Wish journey and I am so grateful to them”
Lisa then went onto explain the status of Robert’s Wish
“Robert’s Wish is nearly ready to launch. Our webpage is in the final stage of development, we have a board of directors (most of whom also work for Ipsos). We are all very excited about showing you our website and to launching the community for youth.
When Lisa talks about Robert’s Wish and what they stand for you can feel her warmth and passion for LGBTQ youth, youth who are bullied and for equality. She explains more about the impact of TV drama The Fosters.
“I have seen firsthand the impact of The Fosters has on people. It speaks to people of all walks of life. The story lines are relevant and so beautifully portrayed. What makes this show even more incredible is that the cast are genuinely the nicest people off camera. The love between Teri Polo and Sherri Saum is genuine. They believe in the messages that they are delivering, they interact with fans via social media and are just really lovely people. This makes a huge difference to massive fan base who follow them and the show on twitter etc.”

We asked Lisa if The Fosters team know about Robert’s Wish and the role they played in its creation:
“I have not reached out to tell them yet. I would love to show the team the website and talk more about the role that they have played in getting us to where we are. The Fosters is obviously featured on the website as the show, the cast etc are a part of how we started. I hope they will like what the team and I have put together. I would also like to say a huge thank you to Teri Polo, Sherri Saum and the rest of the team for the encouragement that placed me on the amazing Robert’s Wish journey. I do plan to reach out as soon as the website is ready”
We love hearing this and only wish that we could see this show in the UK. We are fans and watch clips, when possible, on YouTube but it’s not the same as watching the full episode.
We asked Lisa to tell us more about how mentoring has changed her life over the last 2 years.
“I have met the most amazing people, worked with incredibly brave and beautiful people and this has had a huge impact on my life. It has been challenging but I have the most amazing family and friends that I have managed to keep moving forward. My best friend Jessica has been with me from the beginning and has been a great source of support and encouragement. Jessica is on the board of directors for Robert’s Wish and is as passionate as I am. I have managed to fit my mentoring and Robert’s Wish set up in with my day job of managing global clients brand and communication research needs so its worked well so far. I truly love working with people, helping them realize how amazing they are, how beautiful they are. Seeing someone start to realize how special they are is a great feeling. Through the mentoring, I was also introduced to a web series called Venice the Series, created, produced and starring Crystal Chappell of Guiding Light and Days of Our Lives fame. Venice the Series is based on the popular romance between Crystal’s character Olivia, and her costar Jessica Leccia’s character Natalia from Guiding Light – also known as Otalia. While Crystal’s character is openly gay, the series is more about relationships of all kinds, it’s about love and about life. A few of the youth that I mentor introduced me to it and I became a fan. Through this show I have met a group of incredible woman from all walks of life, all corners of the globe and who share the same passion for equality that I do. I have also had the pleasure of meeting Crystal a few times and can say she is one of the most down to earth, real and lovely people I have ever met. I was even an extra in one of the last episodes of Venice. My one and only experience as an extra. These wonderful women are like a family, they support one another through good and bad times and have been a great source of encouragement to me, including Crystal. I have made lifelong friends thanks to Venice and Crystal. The older youth and some parents that I work with have become fans too and we often have sessions to talk about what they think about the episode, the messages etc. I truly feel so lucky. All my experiences so far have helped me grow as a person but have also helped shape Robert’s Wish. Robert’s Wish is where it is today is thanks to Teri Polo and Sherri Saum’s encouragement, The Fosters incredible fan base but also my Venice Nation family, and the amazing and brave youth and parent groups that I have met along the way.
Finally, we asked Lisa what is next for her and Robert’s Wish
“Well we are planning the launch of Robert’s Wish for September. Unfortunately, I will not be in the US for it. I am being transferred to London in September for work. I am leaving the US with a heavy heart but also with wonderful memories . I will still come to the US when possible but will also work to get Robert’s Wish established in the UK. I will continue my work from London so stay tuned!”
Finally, we asked Lisa to answer some quick questions to get to know her a little more.
Role Model: My Mum and Nanna. Two incredible ladies who have taught me so much. I am very lucky to have them in my life. Also my younger sister Nicola who is a wonderful person and a kick-ass woman.
What inspires you: Besides my family and friends, there are three main sources of inspiration that I can think of right now and that have had a huge impact on me. One was Teri Polo’s HRC Ally for Equality acceptance speech. She had a strong message that gave me goosebumps and still gets me pumped every time I watch it. Another huge inspiration to me is Sarah Kate Ellis, the CEO of GLAAD. I am a huge fan and she is someone that I look up to a great deal. The life changing work that GLAAD does here in the US is amazing. But I have to say that the biggest inspiration to me are the people who show tremendous bravery everyday to live their truth, who love openly and freely despite opposition and who fight for equality of all kinds each and everyday. They inspire me to be a better person.
We thank Lisa for her time. We have had so much fun talking to Lisa. We cant wait to see more of Robert’s Wish and have Lisa on UK soil to continue her great work.
