The Year Without a Santa Claus
The author reminisces about the childhood joy of believing in Santa and passionately reviews their second favourite Christmas movie, “The Year Without a Santa Claus.”
I remember thinking that the idea of a life without Santa would be dreadful, and I was RIGHT! Why do we live like this? Why do we allow our children to grow up and stop believing? I wish my mom would buy me present and still say they were from Santa, at least it would keep the holiday’s silly and interesting. Growing up, “The Year Without a Santa Claus,” was one of my favorite Christmas movies.…

Flopcast 395: Snowmen and Snow Misers - Talking Rankin/Bass with Rick Goldschmidt
Tumblr media
Flopcast episode 395! It’s a special show to ring in the goofy holidays, featuring our interview with official Rankin/Bass historian Rick Goldschmidt! You know Rankin/Bass. It’s the legendary animation studio that produced all those classic holiday shows, starting with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in 1964. Lots more wonderful cartoons followed, including Santa Claus is Comin’ To Town (which gave us Burgermeister Meisterburger), The Year Without a Santa Claus (which gave us the Heat Miser and Snow Miser), ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas (that’s the one with the mice and the clocks), and yes, Nestor the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey. Beyond the holiday specials, Rankin/Bass was also responsible for Mad Monster Party, The Hobbit, The Last Unicorn, ThunderCats, and so much more. Rick’s first book, The Enchanted World of Rankin/Bass, is an invaluable resource for nerds like us, and his latest book celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of Frosty the Snowman. Here on the Flopcast, Rick discusses the amazing talents behind the scenes at Rankin/Bass, many of whom he knew and worked with, including: character designers (and Mad magazine artists) Jack Davis and Paul Coker, Jr.; voice actors Paul Soles (Hermey the elf!), Bradley Bolke (Jangle the elf!), and Larry Storch (come on, LARRY STORCH!); composer Maury Laws; writer Romeo Muller; and the guys who started it all, Arthur Rankin, Jr. and Jules Bass. Also discussed: Rick’s experience as a guest this year at DragonCon, his picks for a couple of lesser-known Rankin/Bass projects we should all see, and his appearance on the TV show Collector’s Call with Lisa Welchel! (That’s right, Blair from The Facts of Life. You know we needed details.) Also this week: A holiday concert (and a new holiday EP) from Boston alt-rock legends Letters to Cleo, Speedy Ortiz, Grant’s Advent Calendar, and Marisa Tomei. (Frosty would have a special message for Marisa: Happy Birthday.)

So Where Does this Cafeteria Food Come From? Inquiring Students Want to Know
Lu Ann Carey’s father grew peaches for most of his life and, at 84, still operates a fruit truck offering fresh produce to his community. Lu Ann inherited his passion for agriculture and has for 15 years engaged students in sustainable gardening at Bradley Central High School (Cleveland, TN). After attending a Fund for Teachers information session last fall, she capitalized on the opportunity to design a fellowship researching sustainable growing practices in the Netherlands. Why? Because...
The Netherlands is the second largest exporter of horticulture products in the world
More than 90 percent of vegetable cultivation involves biological crop protection
The horticulture sector involves employment and education of more than 400,000 people
The Dutch government allocates 10 percent of the total agricultural research budget to organic farming
Growers there focus on closed growing systems that keep pesticides out of water and utilize clean energy sources
For three weeks this summer, Lu Ann researched concepts and practices that made Holland one of the most innovative and successful horticulture production systems in the world. From a tulip museum exhibit on the earliest trials of plant genetics, to one of the oldest botanical gardens documenting the history of plants and genomic plant banks, Lu Ann sought out methodologies for creating healthy, clean and sustainable foods in Bradley Central High School’s greenhouse.
Read more about Lu Ann’s learning on the blog she maintained throughout her fellowship.
“Horticulture is a fascinating, beautiful and changing the world, but I have to make it enticing to high school students,” said Lu Ann. “In order to do so, I used an FFT grant to gain a better understanding of biotechnology and design greenhouse labs that incorporate today’s real world problems.”
Observing in a “glass city” how to switch from nonorganic to fully organic farming and touring one of the first biological companies that supplied bumble bees for greenhouse pollination are just two of the itinerary stops Lu Ann planned for harvesting ideas. She also met with a senior advisor at the Louis Bolk Institute to see how an organic school incorporates biodynamic farming into student labs and hands-on projects. At Bioverbeek, an organic grower which supplies products to the local and global market, she learned how to control pests in her school greenhouse; at Koppert Biologicals, a worldwide company researching healthy pesticides, Lu Ann connected with researchers and growers with whom her students will now Skype for future learning opportunities.
“After my visit to Koppert as well as other greenhouses such "Tomato World" and then the Warmonderhof school, I knew I had to integrate labs into my daily agriculture lessons,” said Lu Ann. “I now plan to introduce research-based, scientific lab projects into all my Agriculture classes. Students will learn through research on biological systems and design a hands-on lab project to test a hypothesis.
“For example, a student will choose a pest in the school greenhouse lab for his/her research project,” Lu Ann continues. “One greenhouse will be used to allow the student to grow the pest so as to not contaminate the production greenhouse. The student will research the pest and learn not only the life cycle, but also details about how the pest responds to environmental conditions.  This project could be a one- to two-year project. Students will mentor predecessor students to take over project studies when they graduate. They may even decide to do follow-up research in post secondary institutions.”
This fall, students will also investigate horticulture products used in the school’s cafeteria to see where they are produced. Interviews with the culinary chef will underscore the importance of market availability and determine how organic products grown in their greenhouse can help support the school community.
The responsibility of an educator, according to Lu Ann, is much larger than teaching facts. Instead, first-hand knowledge and a daily dialogue makes learning real -- something she learned from her father a long time ago.
Lu Ann teaches Career and Technical Education Agriculture and is an FFA association advisor in leadership skills.

In response of making a Voice Acting Tribute to the Man who voiced Tennessee Tuxedo, here is a Voice acting Tribute to Mr. Bradley Bolke, who voiced Tennessee's Chum, Chumley, as well as voicing the character Jereboah Jump in the same Program, Plus he's also the Sterling voice behind Jangle & the Policeman in Rankin/Bass' 'the Year without a Santa Claus', Stanley, Fraidy Bat, & additional voices for 'Honey Halfwitch', and Swifty in 'Swifty and Shorty'. Yeah, that one Picture Reference on BehindtheVoiceActors.com site seems to be the only available existing photo to date, Plus I read he is still Alive, and resides in Dobbs Ferry, New York.
