NHL Expansion Draft 2021: Full list of players available for Seattle Kraken
The NHL announced the protected lists for the 30 teams involved in the NHL Expansion Draft. (Vegas is exempt.) With the names of those protected come the guys who could be snatched up by the Seattle Kraken. There are a number of big names that have everyone trying to figure out just what general manager Ron Francis will do. Will he take Canadiens netminder, and future Hall of Famer, Carey Price and his hefty cap hit? Is Vladimir Tarasenko the sniper he needs or is his health a big question mark? There's also a number of guys who would fit in nicely but are free agents and the chances of signing them are not high (i.e. Alex Ovechkin). EXPANSION DRAFT: Date, time, rules & more for Seattle Kraken team selectionRegardless of what Francis, coach Dave Hakstrol and Co. end up doing, there's a good chance the Kraken will be a playoff contender in just their first season. For now, let the intrigue and the guessing WWRFD (that's: what will Ron Francis do?) begin. Here's a look at every player they can pick.

As I was watching one of the games the other day I was wondering what players had been on certain teams for a long time, so I decided to look it up and compile some of that info here. Here is a list of the three longest-tenured players on every current playoff team’s roster (except Vegas because the team is only three years old). Please note that I organized this by the date that player made their NHL debut with the team, not how long they’ve been in the team’s system (because that would make this list a lot different). Bold names are the team’s captain, and italicized names are goalies. Please share this around, check out who on your team has been around the longest!
Arizona Coyotes
Oliver Ekman-Larsson (10/9/2010)
Brad Richardson (10/9/2015)
Jakob Chychrun, Lawson Crouse, Christian Dvorak, Alex Goligoski (all debuted for the team in the same game - 10/15/2016)

2019 All-Star Game Rosters 2.0
I didn’t like the 2019 ASG rosters so I made my own. I stuck with all of the rules so it still won’t make everyone happy but imo these are better than the originals (all of the changes are italicized):
METRO DIVISION F - Sebastian Aho (CAR) F (via last man in vote) - Nicklas Backstrom F - Mat Barzal (NYI) F - Sidney Crosby (PIT) F - Claude Giroux (PHI) (C) F - Taylor Hall (NJD) F - Cam Atkinson (CBJ) Artemi Panarin (CBJ)
D - John Carlson (WSH) D - Seth Jones (CBJ) Kris Letang (PIT)
G - Braden Holtby (WSH) G - Henrik Lundqvist (NYR)
ATLANTIC DIVISION F - John Tavares (TBL) Aleksander Barkov (FLA) F - Steven Stamkos (TBL) Max Domi (MTL) F - Nikita Kucherov (TBL) F - Auston Matthews (TOR) (C) F - David Pastrnak (BOS) F - Jack Eichel (BUF) Jeff Skinner (BUF)
D - Thomas Chabot (OTT) D - Keith Yandle (FLA) Morgan Rielly (TOR)
G - Jimmy Howard (DET) G - Carey Price (MTL) Andrei Vasilevksy (TBL)
Last man in vote, take your pick lol - Jack Eichel (BUF), Brad Marchand (BOS), Mitch Marner (TOR), Brayden Point (TBL), Steven Stamkos (TBL), John Tavares (TOR), Victor Hedman (TBL), Shea Weber (MTL), Frederick Anderson (TOR)
CENTRAL DIVISION F - Patrick Kane (CHI) F (via last man in vote) - Patrik Laine (WPG) F - Nathan MacKinnon (COL) (C) F - Ryan O-Reilly (STL) F - Blake Wheeler (WPG) Zach Parise (MIN) F - Mikko Rantanen (COL) F - Mark Scheifele (WPG)
D - Miro Heiskanen (DAL) D - Roman Josi (NSH)
G - Devan Dubnyk (MIN) Ben Bishop (DAL) G - Pekka Rinne (NSH)
PACIFIC DIVISION F - Leon Draisaitl (EDM) F - Johnny Gaudreau (CGY) F - Clayton Keller (ARI) F - Connor McDavid (EDM) (C) F - Joe Pavelski (SJS) Sean Monahan (CGY) F - Elias Petterson (VAN)
D - Brent Burns (SJS) D - Drew Doughty (LAK) D - Erik Karlsson (SJS) D (via last man in vote) - Erik Karlsson (SJS) or Mark Giordano (CGY)
G - Marc-Andre Fleury (VGK) G - John Gibson (ANA)
I’ve always had an issue with the way the NHL ASG rosters are chosen and this year really uhhhhh demonstrated the problems with that process. there is truly no way to make everyone happy BUT I thought I would try my hand at building my own rosters for each division while still following the rules and tbh I’m pleased with these results.
also plz note that you could build a whole other team with the last man in options for the Atlantic. damn that division is stacked.
#I will not be taking criticism at this time#I can't make everyone happy this model makes it impossible ok#I tried to get marner and/or point on the atlantic roster but it was tbh impossible#oh also plz note that I made giroux the captain of the metro team bc I'm petty like that#nhl all star game#asg 2019#you can bet your ass I'm not tagging every player lol

Top 10 surprises of 2018-19
Opportunities.
That’s what it takes for a player to have a successful year. Every player on this list had their opportunities this past season, whether it be on the power play, getting top-six minutes or finally getting a chance to play with elite linemates.
Last week, we used a basic math formula to figure out who the top 10 disappointments were. This week, we’re using the same formula to figure out the surprises. At the start of the season, I compiled the points projections of almost 300 players from 13 separate prognosticators. To figure out who was the most surprising, I looked at the average of all 13 predictions and compared them to the final point numbers.
With an increase in scoring, many of the top players saw higher than projected numbers. Nikita Kucherov, for example, had an average projection of 96 points and wound up with 128. While that is 32 points higher, most had Kucherov finishing in the top three in points. I won’t be including those players on this list.
One interesting note is that three players on this list (numbers 1, 3 and 5) had such low point projections that I didn’t even track them before the season began.
10. David Krejci
Krejci went from barely draftable to a must-own. Only drafted in three per cent of Yahoo leagues, and projected to get 49 points on average, Krejci finished the season with 73 points, 24 points higher than anticipated. It helped that he generally moved up the lineup anytime someone on the top line was injured. His most frequent linemates at 5-on-5 were Jake DeBrusk and David Pastrnak and a vast majority of his power-play points came with Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand on the ice.
9. Timo Meier/Tomas Hertl
I’m combining these two for the obvious reasons: Both are former first-round picks that play with the Sharks and had a major breakthrough this season. They were also both 25 points above their average projection. Hertl had 74 points against an average projection of 49 and Meier had 66 points against an average projection of 41. For the most part, they had pretty identical seasons (Hertl had 57 even-strength points vs Meier’s 54 and there was only nine seconds difference between their even-strength ice time). These were the breakout seasons we’ve been expecting from Hertl for a while and thought Meier was still a couple of years away from having.
8. Brayden Point
After the top couple of Lightning forwards, it was pretty tough to gauge who was going to be the great Tampa breakout player going into the season. There were plenty of options, and it all depended on who was going to play on that top line with Nikita Kucherov and Steven Stamkos. J.T. Miller had a great tryout there at the end of last season and many thought Yanni Gourde could build on a great 2017-18 rookie season. Instead, Point got that plum spot and wound up with 92 points, 27 above the average projection.
7. Jonathan Toews
I’ve mentioned this quite a bit in these columns, but I’m a big believer in winning hockey pools by letting others overpay for young talent while you pick up older established talent at a much cheaper price. It’s tough to project which of those older players are going to rebound, but you basically need to look at guys who will continue to get tons of opportunity even when they go through cold snaps. Although with older players, you can’t guarantee consistent great seasons but you can easily put together a championship team focusing on players 27 years and older. After three seasons averaging 56 points, Toews set a career high at 81 points, 25 points higher than his average projection of 56 points.
6. Zach Parise
We shouldn’t have been that surprised by Parise’s shocking season as there were promising signs going into last October that he could rebound. In 2017-18, he missed 39 games because of a microdiscectomy surgery for his back and it took him a while to get back into things. However, he had 12 goals and 17 points in the final 21 games. He continued that hot streak into this season, finishing with 28 goals and 61 points in 74 games. That was 22 points higher than the 39-point average projection, and no prognosticator had him at more than 45 points.
5. Thomas Chabot
Chabot was one of the biggest surprises in the first half of the season, as he put up 38 points in 38 games and made losing Erik Karlsson a lot easier for Sens fans. He cooled off somewhat in the second half thanks to injuries, but still finished with 55 points, 16 of which came on the power play. It will be interesting to see what happens with Chabot the next couple of years as he could be usurped by Erik Brannstrom.
4. Elias Lindholm
One of the best things about Dobber’s annual fantasy guide is the fact it is continuously updated until the regular season. But even so, Dobber had Lindholm finishing with 60 points when the Guide was released August 1 and stood pat on that number throughout the preseason. Only one other projection had him above 50, and the average was 48. Of course, Lindholm went off for 78 points playing on Calgary’s top line, 30 points higher than the average. Many of the other prognosticators, which goes to print in the early summer, had James Neal finishing with more points than Lindholm. Of course, Neal was one of the top disappointments in last week’s column.
3. Dylan Strome
Strome is probably the easiest example when it comes to showing how opportunity can change a player’s value. In 20 games with Arizona, Strome averaged 13:32 per game with little power-play time and inferior linemates. After two-and-a-bit seasons of this, Strome was finally dealt. In Chicago, his ice time jumped to 17:04 per game, he saw more power-play time and had much better linemates. He wound up with 51 points in 58 games in Chicago and 57 points on the season. He’s only 22 years old and a good example of why you shouldn’t necessarily give up on young players after a couple of subpar seasons.
2. Mark Giordano
In any other year, Giordano would have been easily the top guy on this list. His average projection was 38 points, which would have put him in in the barely draftable category. Former Dobber writer Steve Laidlaw had Giordano ranked the highest at 51 points. Giordano blew away all those projections with an amazing 74 points (and would probably have had a few more if the Flames didn’t sit him out for most of the final week of the season). With the average projection at 38 points, Giordano had the highest missed average missed projection of all players. Remember, Gio’s previous two seasons saw him post 38 and 39 points, so there was nothing that screamed he was going to challenge for the Norris trophy. He’ll be tough to gauge for next season, as he didn’t really do anything differently this season compared to last (his shots, shooting percentage, time on ice and power-play ice time were mostly static), so it will be difficult to figure out if this was a one-time thing or not.
1. Erik Gustafsson
It’s sometimes interesting how smaller decisions can have such a huge impact on a player. As of Dec. 14, Gustafsson had just come back after missing two games with an illness and was a healthy scratch for another game in early December. Although he flirted with time on the top power-play unit, he was mostly entrenched on the second group. Also at the time, the Hawks had the worst power-play in the league. Then Henri Jokiharju went to the World Juniors tournament. He wasn’t having the greatest season, but he was given an opportunity at times on the top man-advantage unit. So when the Hawks made a switch on the power play, it fell to Gustafsson. Would Jokiharju have been given that opportunity had he still been in Chicago? There’s no way to know, but what we do know is that on Dec. 16, Gustafsson became the Hawks top power-play quarterback. The Hawks then had the second-best power play the rest of the year and Gustafsson put up 46 points in 48 games the rest of the season, finishing with 60 points.

There’s the first round of the NHL draft, and then there’s everybody else
News
It’s no big secret that many of the NHL’s best players come with a first-round pedigree, but the numbers are still surprising
Edmonton Oilers’ Connor McDavid and Pittsburgh Penguins’ Sidney Crosby.|Getty Images
It seems that I’ve stumbled on a theme, so I’m sticking with it. It started a few weeks ago with a country-by-country breakdown of NHL players. Then it was a draft breakdown. Then a goalie breakdown.
This time around, I’ve highlighted five key statistical categories through the opening month of the 2018-19 NHL season – top 50 scorers, top defensemen scorers, players averaging at least a point per game, and forwards and defensemen who were leading in average ice time – and then looked at what round these players were drafted in. (Spoiler: The first round. If a player ranks in the top 50 in any of the aforementioned categories, he was most likely a first-round pick. Game recognize game.)
Spoilers aside, though, here’s a more in-depth analysis of the results. (Note: Stats through games played as of Nov. 2.)
Top 50 NHL scorers (13+ points) 1st round: 40 2nd round: 4 3rd round: 2 4th round: 1 5th round: 0 6th round: 0 7th round: 0 Undrafted: 3 Notable: If this doesn’t illustrate the importance of the first round of the NHL draft, nothing does. Entering Friday night’s games, 50 players had scored at least 13 points this season — and 40 of those 50 players were first-round picks. Another way to look at it – there were only three players who were drafted in the third round or later among the league’s top 50 in scoring (third-rounders Brad Marchand and Brayden Point and fourth-rounder Johnny Gaudreau). And there’s not a fifth-, sixth- or seventh-round pick to be seen. There were, however, three undrafted players in the top 50: Calgary’s Mark Giordano, Columbus’ Artemi Panarin (originally signed by Chicago) and Vegas’ Jonathan Marchessault (originally signed by Tampa Bay). Giordano was also one of only five defensemen to crack the league’s top 50 scorers, and the other four (Toronto’s Morgan Rielly, San Jose’s Brent Burns, Ottawa’s Thomas Chabot and Washington’s John Carlson) were all first-rounders.
Top 48 NHL defensemen scorers (6+ pts) 1st round: 25 2nd round: 8 3rd round: 3 4th round: 4 5th round: 2 6th round: 2 7th round: 1 8th round: 1 Undrafted: 2 Notable: First things first – we went with the “top 48” highest-scoring defensemen rather than the top 50, because the “top 50” was actually the top 69 due to the glut of defensemen tied at five points. Of the 48 defensemen with at least six points entering Friday night’s action, a little more than half were first-round selections (25 of 48), including most of the big names (Burns, Carlson, Erik Karlsson, Drew Doughty, Morgan Rielly and others). But there were definitely some good finds spread throughout the subsequent rounds – P.K. Subban, Roman Josi and Duncan Keith were second-rounders, Kris Letang was taken in the third round, Mattias Ekholm in the fourth, John Klingberg in the fifth. And don’t forget Dustin Byfuglien in the eighth round in 2003, a round that doesn’t even exist anymore after the NHL cut the draft back to seven rounds in 2005.
Players with points-per-game average of 1.00 or higher (minimum 5 GP): 70 First round: 51 Second round: 6 Third round: 4 Fourth round: 3 Fifth round: 1 Sixth round: 1 Seventh round: 0 Undrafted: 4 Notable: Of the 608 players who have appeared in at least five games this season, 70 were averaging at least a point per game. That number is sure to drop as the season unfolds – only 24 players averaged a point per game last season (minimum 40 GP) – but it’s a good sample size for our purposes here. Once again, the vast majority of the NHL’s most productive players have a first-round pedigree – 51 out of 70, to be precise. The sixth-rounder, in case you’re wondering, is newly minted Islanders captain Anders Lee. With 12 points in 12 games, he was right on the 1.00 PPG number, just a glimmer behind former Isles captain John Tavares (14 points in 13 games, 1.08 PPG).
Top 50 defensemen in ice time per game First round: 30 Second round: 6 Third round: 4 Fourth round: 4 Fifth round: 1 Sixth round: 1 Seventh round: 1 Eighth round: 1 Undrafted: 2 Notable: Really, what better way to gauge a defenseman’s worth than his average ice time? Of course goals and points are great, but ice team speaks to how much value a player’s team – and coach – places on him. After crunching the numbers, the NHL’s 50 busiest defensemen were playing at least 21:59 per game, with L.A.’s Doughty (27:07), Minnesota’s Ryan Suter (26:01) and Edmonton’s Oscar Klefbom (26:01) leading the way. All three of those blueliners were first-round picks. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay’s Anton Stralman was in 50th place in average ice time (21:59), and Stralman also represents the seventh round in this exercise after being drafted 216th overall by Toronto in 2005.
Top 52 forwards in ice time per game First round: 39 Second round: 3 Third round: 4 Fourth round: 1 Fifth round: 1 Sixth round: 1 Seventh round: 0 Undrafted: 3 Notable: A total of 52 forwards were averaging at least 19:06 in ice time per game (three forwards were tied at 19:06, hence the “top 52” instead of “top 50”). Do the math, and nearly 80 percent of the NHL’s forward ice-time leaders were first-round selections (39 out of 52). Dig a little deeper, and we see that four No. 1 overall picks rank among the top 10 — Connor McDavid (first, 23:11), Nathan MacKinnon (fifth, 22:11), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (sixth, 22:05) and Patrick Kane (10th, 21:05).

Art F City: Monday Links: Be This Dog’s Neighbor
Gallerist Lydia Pettit with her dog Ruby. By J.M. Giordano for City Paper.
City Paper asked some of their writers and friends to pose for awkward portraits with their pets, by photographer J.M. Giordano. These are amazing. We would do this, but sadly no one at AFC has time for a puppy. [City Paper]
Baltimore: if you’re interested in responding to an RFP for vacant buildings along Howard Street in the Bromo arts district, there are open houses and assistance available to artists and organizations. This area is full of artist-owned buildings (including Platform Gallery, where you can hang out with Ruby and Lydia, the awesome dog and human pictured above). Let’s keep it that way! [Bromo Arts and Entertainment]
Do we give too much media attention to art vandals? That’s one of several motives Noah Charney hypothesizes in his fascinating look at why people attack artworks. So far we have no clue why a man slashed a Thomas Gainsborough painting at London’s National Gallery, but motives for past attacks have included religion (from Islamic fundamentalism to believing one is Jesus Christ reincarnated) and the desire for a media spotlight. [Salon]
Robert Walsh is convinced the Met has been displaying a knockoff French medieval sculpture the museum acquired in the 1930s. The piece in question is a head, purportedly from a doorway at Notre Dame, but arrived in New York via a dealer notorious for trafficking in fakes. [New York Post]
Whatever happened to Frida Kahlo’s “The Wounded Table”? The painting hasn’t been seen since an exhibition in Warsaw in 1955. Kahlo painted it during her brief divorce from Diego Rivera, after she found out he slept with her younger sister. When she exhibited it at Mexico City’s International Exhibition of Surrealism in 1940 she was concerned it wasn’t well-received. She ended up gifting it to a Russian ambassador six years later. Following the Warsaw show a decade later, the painting’s whereabouts remain a mystery. [The Daily Beast]
Not to do with art, but in news from our dystopic country, as reported in Canada, Daniel Dale finds that Trump voters in Ohio are not bothered by the president’s lies. On the subject of Trump’s claim that Obama illegally wiretapped him, James Cassidy, an out of work construction worker said that they were obviously lies, but he liked that. “He’s ruffling every feather in Washington that he can ruffle. These guys are scrambling. So: yeah! I like it. I think it’s a good thing. I want to see them jump around a little bit.” [The Toronto Star]
Brad Pitt has taken up sculpting to help him deal with his divorce woes. Word has it, he’s a quick learner. [Page Six]
We’re having a hard time identifying the point of this article about gallery closures in artnet News. As far as we can tell, it’s an attempt to connect the closure of two middle tier art galleries in London to Andrea Rosen’s closure earlier this month. But are the two comparable? Rosen ran an upper tier gallery with two outlets in Chelsea and described what mostly seemed like personal reasons for closing. The other closures have to do with the effect art fairs have had on brick and morter locations. Speaking of which, did anyone else notice Nicole Klagsbrun at NADA this year? She closed up shop in New York a couple years ago, penning a fire-y letter about throwing the towel in on this business, and is now operating as a private dealer out of Chelsea. [artnet News]
Hyun-Gi Kim has created a chair that moves fake blood around tubes, depending where you sit on it. This looks so gross. [Dezeen]
Fearless girl, a statue by Kristen Visbal that’s situated facing “Charging Bull” in the financial district will remain on view through February 18th, 2018. The new city permit extends the statue’s stay. The old permit was originally slated to expire April 2nd. The statue has been a lightening rod for critics, some of whom believe the piece represents a strong feminist statement, and others who believe it is a PR stunt rather than a “true” feminist statement. People will fight about anything. [Curbed]

Top 300 Keeper League Skaters – April 2019
Here are the Top 300 skaters to own in your points-only keeper leagues – April edition!
As with every year for the last 17 years, my April, May and June adjustments are casual. The July and August editions are my "audit" rankings because, thanks to the Fantasy Guide, every detail of every player within every team is analyzed top to bottom. April? Not so much. I go over every player on my spreadsheet and wipe the slate clean for the season just completed, and I make my best guess – no formulas – at how they will do next year. I tweak the 3YP, I adjust the team offense value (i.e. for Columbus I tweaked it downward because I expect them to lose a lot of offense this summer).
What's left is that the young players improve, the older players slip. The injured players get a clean slate and move up, the over-achievers of 2018-19 move down. The late-season surges of some promising young players get a bit of a bump. Doing the April rankings are always a lot of fun. My goal is to do my best to get these as close to what I come up with in August after extensive analysis as I can. The players I'm 'way' off on I take it hard. I want to be a savant with this – I want spew out an accurate player value without doing the work (and then prove myself right after doing the work in the summer).
As always, players between +/- 5.0 in the ratings should be considered equal. Click on any player name to be taken to his incredible stats page (with charts, game logs, graphs, fancy stats – everything you need, even customizable date windows you can look at).
