i think youve already posted something along these lines already, but if you were to do an intro story/"pilot" for tnms what do you think it'd be like?

If I could do anything, I think I'd want TNMS to be a comic? Maybe something similar to an ask blog, but where the plot is set in stone, and asks are for interacting with characters in between or pushing the story along in very specific ways.

If I were to do a Pilot, or Intro story, I think I'd like the idea of Mario doing what he should be best at, which would be saving the Prince from the Koopa Queen. But in actuality, Mario learns that he's very bad at it, clearly untrained and easily laughed at. He won't even put up a fight! Luckily, the Prince is good enough at escaping himself, especially while Bowsella is preoccupied with this tiny knucklehead in the middle of her throne room??

And after Mario and the Prince get out of Dodge, it'd be a hard talk between the two of them, how Mario should act and hold himself.

And how he'd need a teacher.

Which would introduce a daily work of exploring one part of the world or learning how to use one power-up and the silly complications that come with it; guided by a retired castle guard named Saul.

I like the idea of having small contained conflicts and plots, a sort of "character of the week" type of interactions in between the larger stuff.

I could even temporarily swap focus to other important characters, like Teal and Edward, following their plot for a bit while Mario recovers from some crazy mistake.

Like I said before, a lot of it is very. disjointed concepts on scrap paper. And if nothing else, TNMS is a stress project for me to play around with and write and draw for My Own Comfort and Enjoyment!!

I have fun when I draw the characters and write silly stories that make no sense, and that's all that matters in the end!

And before I start: I started writing and working on The New Mario Story (TNMS) way back in high school as a joke and it's turned into this huge passion project/stress ball thing for me. A lot of it is arbitrary for no reason other than it made me happy when I made it! So try not to think too hard about it all <:) I know I don't.

anyway the gist of it is Mario is a younger, thin and lanky greenhorn type of guy instead of the experienced older plumber you're used to (perhaps a younger version of the Mario we know, or maybe someone completely different altogether?). He's completely clueless when it comes to the world around him; I wanted him to have the vibe of someone young, booting up their very first Mario game in their life.

Prince Pitt Toadstool is the current monarch in charge of the Mushroom Kingdom. He's professional and graceful for the most part, but he's also admittedly antsy and more hands-on with his kingdom than he should be. He walks the streets of Toad Town often, and will take trips to nearby towns and cities when there's issues (much to the dismay of his advisor, Toadsworth). He wants to be available at all times for his subjects!!

But, since the Mushroom Kingdom houses a lot of valuable resources and is responsible for so much political power, Toadstool becomes a large target.

Specifically so, his presence is interesting to the Bowsella, the Koopa Queen, ruler of the Koopa Kingdom.

The two kingdoms have been at ends for who knows however long. There have been wars in the past, fighting over land and resources. There's even been talk of an arranged marriage between Bowsella and Toadstool to merge the two kingdoms together.

Of course, this trouble is all with her subjects in mind! The Koopa Kingdom occupies a lot of harsh crag and volcanic terrain, so resources like food and tourism are hard to come by. It's for the good of her people. The end justifies the means, after all.

I also made designs for the Toad Brigade and the Koopalings!

There are a few others that are less recognizable, however. My favorite would have to be Saul Toad.

Saul Toad (or, Saul T. for short) is Mario's roommate. He acts as a sort of mentor to Mario, and teaches him the ropes of what it means to exist in this world.

He's a chain-smoking, retired veteran; who knows WAY more than you think about everything and anything. He constantly lies about his age, and keeps his past to himself. The most Mario knows is that Saul used to work as a castle guardsman. After he retired, he followed his dream of becoming a bar owner.

However, Toad Town is not the bustling adventurer's hub it used to be, and business is rough.

There's also some smaller subplots here and there, about characters I'd want to get attached to Mario and join him in adventures. You can tell I take a lot of inspiration from the older Paper Mario games (and the partner system) the more you break apart these things to their bare essentials!

The most fleshed out one would be about Teal (who is a Shy Guy), and her abusive boyfriend, Edward (a Big Bandit).

Teal is in a dangerously abusive relationship with Edward (who owns a pawn shop in the seedier part of Toad Town). She's pretty meek and shy on her own, but slowly finds her voice and stands up for herself with Mario's influence.

Basic TNMS Breakdown

Mario: Player One

* he’s new in town

The comic begins with Mario and follows him throughout most of the narrative (there will be multiple times were the plot will break off and follow the viewpoint of a different character, but it’s safe to say that Mario is the main focus).

Mario arrived to Toad Town on a black and green train, with a single luggage bag and an ad for a roommate above a tavern. He now lives with Saul Toad, a retired royal guardsman turned bartender, and will continue to live with him as the story progresses. Mario is an only child, and doesn’t seem to have any family waiting for him anywhere.

As the main character, Mario is expected to encounter and solve many problems that, normally, he wouldn’t have much obligation to do so. This includes taking on tasks like saving the Prince from the Koopa Queen, retrieving lost treasures, and helping citizens with their day-to-day lives. However, Mario is a pacifist, and refuses to do complete any of these tasks through any means of violence.

This proves difficult.

Saul Toad: The Tutorial

* more than he seems

Saul is Mario’s roommate. Mario showed up at his doorstep with an advertisement for a roommate with his address written on it. Saul never put out an ad for a roommate. However, Saul allowed Mario to stay, and let him work as a busser in his tavern. At the beginning of the comic, Saul is incredibly distrusting towards Mario and will even act coldly towards him.

Saul seems to have a wide knowledge on many topics and objects of the world, even more so for someone his age. He’s very secretive about his past, and the most he let Mario know was that he used to work at the Castle as a guardsman. When he retired, he followed his dream of becoming a bar owner to cater to travelers and adventures in Toad Town.

Toad Town’s population has since diminished from its former glory as the Mushroom Kingdom’s “hub town”, and Saul’s business has taken a hit. As the story progresses, Saul and Mario’s relationship will change and develop and Saul will begin teaching Mario more about the things he needs to learn to become an accomplished adventurer.

Anything more is to be discovered as the story progresses.

Pit Toadstool: The Prince

* a glorified spokesperson

Prince Toadstool rules over the Mushroom Kingdom, next to his adviser, Toadsworth:

The Mushroom Kingdom is extremely well known across the mainland, known for it’s wide expanse of important and valuable resources and political powers. However, that makes Toadstool a very targeted autocrat, subject to threats (like kidnapping). 

Usually, Toadstool remains within the confines of the castle under Toadsworth’s careful hawk-like watch but recently the Prince has been getting restless, feeling as though he’s sitting back doing nothing to better his kingdom. So he’s been taking the matters into his own hands and sneaking out of the castle to try and find every day citizens that could need his help and assistance.

This stresses Toadsworth to no end and puts the Prince at an extremely high risk.

Bowsella: The Koopa Queen

* the end justifies the means

Bowsella is the ruler of the Koopa Kingdom.

The Koopa Kingdom and the Mushroom Kingdom have been butting heads for years now and are tiptoeing the lines of war between the two. Queen Bowsella has been endlessly trying to get the Mushroom Kingdom to absorb the Koopa Kingdom for land/resource purposes for the good of the Koopa Kingdom citizens.

Due to Prince Toadstool’s constant refusals, Bowsella has begun to take the matters of the kingdoms merging into her own claws. There’s talk of forced arranged marriage to force the two kingdoms together.

She, however, holds no romantic feelings for Prince Toadstool, and is doing this strictly for the benefit of her own kingdom.

Teal: The Kleptomaniac

* no damsel in distress

A Shy Gal who lives in Toad Town with their younger sibling Gold:

They work for Edward in his pawn shop behind the counter, and becomes interested in Mario after seeing him in passing in downtown Toad Town. Teal cares for Gold and makes sure they stay fed and in school, since moving to Toad Town alone with them was strictly for Gold’s best interest.

Edward and Teal have been dating for quite some time now, but with the way their relationship has developed, Teal has been caught stuck in an abusive relationship, not leaving him in fear of the unknown (whether he lashes out at Gold or completely pulls the plug on Teal’s steady income). She is more afraid of what he could do than what he already does, so she takes what Edward gives her in hopes things never escalate.

After meeting Mario, she slowly begins to let herself feel safe again.

Edward: The First Antagonist

* an unstoppable force  

Edward owns the Lucky Pawn and is the first nuisance Mario comes into contact with.

He’s a manipulative and smooth-talking abuser who will do whatever it takes and step on anyone he can to get to the top. Including using others to do his dirty work, like Ticker the Cherry Bob-Omb, who he uses as a bodyguard:

After learning Mario has made it to town, Edward begins to hyper-fixate on him and the implications of what it means that the Player One has finally come back, resulting in a complicated situation between Edward, Mario, Ticker and Teal. And once Edward’s threat is taken care of for the first time, we’ll be seeing more of him (and his father, Winston):

what's the difference between koopalings and regular koopas?

Koopa Troopa are more turtle than dragon;

Koopalings are more dragon than turtle.

Bowsella would be considered a full grown Koopaling, probably.

Okay, question about TNMS. What the frick is happening in Odyssey considering Lesbian Bowsella. Are the two being force to marry by an outside force, are Mario and Cappy stuck trying to find the Mushroom kingdom but the Odyssey just keeps ficking up and they need to fight a rabbit for the moon, what's going on there?

Nothing changes about the plot at its core.

Bowsella doesn't love Toadstool, Bowsella loves the power Toadstool has.

The Mushroom Kingdom is rich in resources and political power, and the cleanest way to get a hold of it would for the Mushroom and Koopa Kingdoms to merge. And the only way to do so--since Toadstool refused the propositions and conditions Bowsella gave him the first few times--was to marry him instead and force the two kingdoms to come together.

This has nothing to do with her sexuality, mind you. This is a decision made with her people and her kingdom in mind. It's only a legal title. And even if she DID accomplish it, if you think that would deter her from having lovers and relationships, then you're very mistaken. What are they going to do, tell her not to? She's the queen, she does what she wants!!!

are koopas/koopalings and koopa troopa different species? cause koopalings have hair while koopa troopa dont, are they wigs?

Yes, they're different!! I've said it once before;

Koopa Troopa are more turtle than dragon, Koopaling are more dragon than turtle.

Koopaling grow hair, including peach fuzz fur on their bodies--which is what makes their heads different colors than the rest of their bodies. The only exception to this is Wendy O. Koopa, who is completely hairless (think like a sphynx cat). Bowser (and Bowsella by extension) are considered full grown Koopalings.

Koopa Troopa on the other hand, do not grow hair. Any hair you see on a Koopa Troopa is artificial (so wigs, and fake moustaches!!), but it's very commonplace, so it's not considered odd.
