Ugly is Evil: The Dystopian Legacy of 2000s Makeover TV
A video essay breaking down 2000s makeover TV, the politics of ugliness, and the impact on today's beauty obsessed world!
"When we say “everyone is beautiful in their own way”, is that based on a genuine belief in universal beauty, or in a genuine belief that everyone is worthy of the things “ugliness” might keep from us?"

Beauty culture is driving me insane. I'm bombarded with videos from those tiktok plastic surgeons and influencers showing their before/after botox. It's always the same excuse "there's nothing wrong with having forehead wrinkles! but mine made me look much older than I am so I got it fixed! I'm so happy with the result! Love yourselves!"
I acknowledge the effort made to not seem like you're insulting people with forehead wrinkles but it is very bleak. To me it seems like a cheap way of dodging criticism. "This is for me! I never said that other people should get rid of their forehead wrinkles!" Do you not realise the implications of your videos? A stated "flaw" in appearance is never limited to one person! I know and emphasize deeply with judging one's own appearance harsher than you would judge other people's, but then (respectfully) you have to shut the fuck up about it. Other people see what you're saying about yourself, and those comments will be echoing in their head the next time they look in a mirror.
Either admit your fucked up views on how women are lesser for visibly ageing or having laugh lines and crow's feet and need to get it "fixed" OR acknowledge to yourself that this is Your problem, Your insecurity, and stay quiet. Do not post about how happy you are about getting rid of your facial "flaw" on social media, unless you are deliberately encouraging others to do the same thing (in which case, I hope you rot).
Because for every post like that, there is a 12 year old girl reading it and accepting that this is what the future has in store for her. That she needs to start an anti ageing process before she's fully grown, that she has to stay vigilant of every line appearing on her face and that her natural appearance will never be enough.
Stop pretending like your actions aren't influenced by others and stop pretending that your actions don't influence others! You are not getting out of this blameless by writing a bleak disclaimer!

maybe we went from really matte makeup being trendy to really dewy and shiny makeup being trendy because getting “non-invasive” beauty treatments (i. e. filler) were becoming more and more popular and normalised and you get unnaturally smooth and shiny skin from botox and fillers

I feel a lot of plastic surgery is peak objectification. And I don't mean it in the way you might first think, but I mean in how botox/fillers/etc works.
She's meant to look fantastic in photos- still images. She poses, she doesn't emote (or she does the one emote that looks good) and that's that. But in real life, it's off-putting. When she talks, you see her upper lip is weirdly still. Her eyebrows don't move. Her eyes don't crinkle when she smiles, which feels fake or forced. She looks different when she's actually being a human and the surgeries affect everything from talking to eating to emoting. You're specifically making yourself look the most appealing when you're doing nothing else but sitting/standing and posing. Being a person shows the flaws in your newly designed face, so you must be an object.

i think everyone on sunnytwt needs to be sat down so i can explain to them what basic human empathy is. and then maybe i put them in a blender until they agree to write meta about the characters instead of whether or not charlie day got facial reconstruction surgery.
#ada speaks#u do not exist in a vacuum and your words have the capability to harm others#celebrities may not see your tweets but your balding transmasc mutual and your follower who feels self conscious about her nose will#it is fucking bizarre the way these people conduct themselves online#really. really fucking weird man#and then you see them acting like ppl are 'defending rich white men'#instead of taking issue with the actual shit theyre saying#whether or not you think rcg has been 'under the knife' or not#a) how is this any of your business. you are not entitled to this info nor do you have a free pass to criticize someone's personal choice#b) ask yourself why you feel you need to critique alleged surgeries and how they stack up to imposed conventional beauty standards#c) you do not *own* them. you can have opinions on your own attraction to them but#a person getting plastic surgery or hair plugs or whatever is up to them. not you. if it helps to make them feel better then who cares.#just because it doesn't make them attractive to YOU doesn't mean its okay to point and laugh#if a trans guy got top surgery and it was 'botched' would you act like they were stupid for getting it in the first place?#if a trans woman decided she wanted to surgically shave her jaw would you shame her for that?#it's their body. it's not yours.#for the record i don't believe any of them have gotten work done but think its a stupid thing to speculate on regardless#ive watched family members go through plastic surgeries of varying success. ive seen them get botox and hair plugs and everything#normal everyday people do it and it's not always about vanity#it can be for gender reaffirming reasons (and yes this includes when cis people do it) to alleviate dysphoria#trying to point out alleged surgical alterations made is just. gross#not to mention that holy shit MOST of the shit ppl are saying is like. age. different hairstyles. different facial expressions.#maybe if these people actually watched the show theyd be able to see the gang in action instead of staring at pics like spot the difference

Botulinum toxin 100IU
Botulinum toxin is widely used to treat wrinkles due to its ability to relax muscles. By injecting botulinum toxin into the small muscle groups of the face, facial wrinkles are relaxed and muscle volume is reduced, making the face more perfect and the skin smoother and more delicate without damaging the muscles or changing the normal feel.

The OG of beauty and when it goes too far
This is all these women in their prime, obviously, but what about when plastic surgery takes it to too far in some cases, when you’ve had too much lip filler too much Botox changed your face about too much it looks completely different, I was watching Robbie Williams documentary and how they used to call him in the 90s and I literally couldn’t believe it when he was just a normal size man, the same size as my father who was just a normal normal size man tiny bit of a belly but not ridiculously fat not fat at all.
I can’t even imagine what it would be like Hollywood or any kind of media outlet and celebrities from England say that the British pressure is definitely the worst, some Americans would say it’s the other way round don’t Americans don’t Courtney Love say that she was treated really well in the British media because of her love of teacup and other things English, I don’t know really but I’ve seen pretty bad, you don’t get blind items over here. I’ve tried to look for some English celebrities because they’re just not famous in America and it’s one big thing for English artist to crack America.
But some of these women and people get really annoyed when I say I prefer Bobby Jean Brown to Pamela Anderson, just love her personality and I love her style and I don’t like the way that she knew that Tommy had a girlfriend and got with him anyway, anyway it’s Tommy’s fault really because he’s the one who is in a relationship.
But I look at Megan Fox now who is stunning in the mid 2000 and I feel like she’s turned herself into something Genzie like because even Holly Madison and Bridget Marquette, was saying that you can’t be beautiful enough for nowadays. Everything has to have a filter those pictures of like Gwyneth Paltrow with a filter over her face from the 90s.
I’m sorry these kids from this generation don’t seem to think they are attractive but they were fucking stunning, I know they love Pam but they need to love these other women too because they’ve given so much of their life to us😍 they deserve some sort of love.
I guess you can’t have enough beauty in this industry, like plastic surgery drugs and all the other things become very addictive, and they have all the money and the resources to do so, I mean look at the Kardashians when they started, they were a rich family growing up, but they have changed over the years Kim Kardashian, especially and Khloe, khloe was always told that she was the ugly one out of the sisters, she was just a normal Armenian and a woman, beautiful but natural, but that’s not enough even they move growing up around it, actually makes it worse, and Kylie Jenner not forgetting having her lips done and it just being a huge thing because she was so young that’s a sad part.
