"Friday was supposed to be a step back toward normal for Polar Cave Ice Cream Parlour.
Instead, it turned into one of Mark Lawrenceâs worst days in close to two decades serving award-winning desserts in Cape Cod.
People disregarded a rule to order an hour before pickup and demanded their ice cream anyway, he wrote on his businessâs Facebook page. Customers took out their anger at delays on overwhelmed employees, including a teenage girl who quit, he said. The harassment came as employees around the country face verbal abuse and even violence while trying to navigate a new era of socially distant operations and public health precautions.
Lawrence said he would have to close back down. Now heâs doing limited orders and pondering the best way forward, according to his posts and local news interviews.
Lawrence had opened quietly Friday ahead of the Motherâs Day weekend, he told Boston 25 News. But a surge in orders quickly crushed the lean staff he had behind the counter. While the number of orders was enough for a staff of seven, he said, only four employees were working that night. About 7 p.m., Lawrence posted on Facebook: âSTOP CALLING.â
The teenager who quit after a barrage of abuse, he said, was one of his best workers at a Mashpee, Mass., institution that calls its owner âPapa Bearâ and offers a long list of ice cream fun facts on its website. The worker âstuck it through her shift,â Lawrence told local media, despite facing language that âyou wouldnât even say in a menâs locker room.â
âAll of the sudden, word spread like wildfire, and nobody listened to what we told them,â Lawrence told Boston 25 News on Saturday. âPeople have forgotten how to treat other human beings in the six or seven weeks that theyâve been confined to their homes.â
Lawrence didnât immediately respond to a request for comment from The Washington Post, but he told Boston 25 News that he spent Saturday serving a smaller group of customers, many of whom did not get their orders Friday. He called it a âvastly improved operationâ in a late-night post, thanking people for following the rules and placing their orders well ahead of pickup time.
âThere were minimal people just pulling up and expecting to be served immediately, they chose to place an order and return or sit and wait,â he wrote. âAs one customer said, âI can sit here in my car, or sit home and watch TV.â â
âWe will continue to tweak our efforts and eventually try again to open full speed ahead,â he added.
Employees in the service sector are on the front lines of a transformed landscape for stores and restaurants, one thatâs left some customers frustrated. Many small businesses are reopening with skeleton staffs and tough new rules to minimize spread of the novel coronavirus.
Theyâve also struggled to enforce regulations, leading some officials to back off mandates that people wear masks inside businesses. One city in Oklahoma nixed its new rules within a day after store employees were threatened and harassed.
Some clashes over coronavirus-driven restrictions have turned violent, even deadly. A McDonaldâs customer in Oklahoma City shot employees after being asked to leave because of new rules, according to officials, and prosecutors say a Family Dollar security guard was shot and killed in Flint, Mich., this month after telling a customer her child had to wear a mask to enter.
As Massachusetts and other states move to restart economies devastated by the coronavirus, Lawrence suggested in a Facebook post last weekend that his biggest concern was whether customers would return safely. He shared a restaurant ownerâs breakdown of all his anxieties about going back to business.
âWhat I have seen with my own two eyes over the past 8 weeks is that some folks are not being super careful about social distancing,â wrote the owner from Provincetown, another spot on Cape Cod that draws many tourists. âMore often, they tend to be people I donât recognize (meaning they are probably people here for the day or just a short period, like a weekend.)â
Even as Polar Cave limited its sales, a Sunday afternoon update indicated that employees were stretched thin.
âPLEASE [DONâT] CALL,â read a Facebook post at about 3 p.m. âWe simply cannot take a person off making ice cream orders to answer.â"

Night Moves
My parents sold their house. The house they bought before my sister and I were born, in that weird slip of time Iâm told was the late 1970s. Theyâre moving to Providence, city of my fatherâs birth, and a place where a modest condo can be bought, for two people facing next and (yes, we all must admit) maybe final chapters. Over the 4th of July holiday, I spent a teary two nights in the house, going wandering in Boston with a friend and then, just as it was time to leave for the train, taking last passes through the small expanse of the place. I cried. I made myself cry? I donât know if the tears were real or forced or if forced tears arenât actually real. But I did. Almost wept. My mom pulled the car out of the driveway and there was my dad, good old Dad, walking the dog up the hill, the last time Iâd ever see that. I blubbed, discretely, until my mom asked me a question and then it was hard to hide. âItâs just a building,â she said, which is what Iâd told myself, what my therapist had told me. Itâs just a building. Just a thing that teemed with all the stuff of our lives for 40 years. And now itâs not.
The day before this goodbye, my family and I went to a wedding. My cousinâs kid got married, an assemblage of people Iâd not seen in at least 20 years. It was held at a country club south of the city, and was full of that kind of straight wedding swagger I hate so muchâis there no worse sight in the world than groomsmen in suits clutching bottles of beer? That effortful commitment to male casualness amidst the formalness? It speaks to such an ease, the way these men move through the world, that my sister and I were repulsed by it. During the wedding, a long and violent thunderstorm rolled in. But just before that, my family and I wandered the grounds of the country club, walked along the ridge of a hill that offered a view of the city, the whole of Boston laid out there in the hazy, humid distance. The four of us there, lined up and regarding it. It felt like a maudlin farewell. To this city weâve all been so tethered to, just then rendered so small, so faraway.Â
I traveled a lot this summer, more than I had planned. I went to Provincetown for a few nights, my new favorite place, and felt the mid-June thrill of all that. I went to Los Angeles, mostly for workâa grinding reporting assignment that has yet to bear fruit but still could be something good, I hopeâbut also to see my sister. Sheâs so good at day trips, feeling so blessed with a car, and we drove up to Ojai, spent a late morning and early afternoon in its clenching, clean heat. We hiked a short distance to a waterfall, where barefoot kids were laughing and dogs were shuffling around. We went into town, roaming an outdoor used bookstore where I searched for my own book and, as ever, came up short. Iâd heard so much about Ojai and, while finding it beautiful, was surprised by how little it offered. âYou have to be rich to enjoy it,â I said to my sister as we got back in her car and, sealed up in the air conditioning, drove back to the city.Â
In Los Angeles, I spent a lot of time holed up in my hotel, a once-trendy place on the Sunset Strip that has a thumping pool club and is just the right amount of uncomfortable to feel cool. Itâs a full-service place, so I could take my meals there, do drinks on the patio, barely leave the confines of it. I went a little crazy, swaddled up in the gray blanket of that placeâits easy, healthy-ish, sour food, its lukewarm sauvignon blanc mood. I felt like I was there for a whole long Shining winter, growing a beard and going insane and locating some truer kernel of myself than Iâd ever known existed. I let myself skitter out into the night on occasion, to see friends and revel, just a bit, in the riot of a city I hate. (Iâm sorry, L.A. friends. I have tried so hard to like Los Angeles, but it makes me so stressed and unhappy and full of constant Sunday Scaries that I have to hate it. That said, I canât wait to visit again.) But mostly I was alone, conducting halting interviews on the phone, pacing around in my cold room while tall trees fluttered in the balcony window. One uneasy afternoon, I watched a bug crawl around the enormous beanbag chair the hotel provided and figured it knew what to do with this lump of furniture more than I did.Â
I just got back from Fire Island, another place I have tried to love andâunlike L.A.âmight finally be done with. What a dream of an idea that place is, and yet in execution, or at least in my admittedly narrow experience of it, what a drab and horny and exhausting thing it actually is. I donât fit in there at all, which is a strange sensation for someone who has prided himself on being able to adapt, to quickly recover, to renegotiate physical and social spaces as needed. Fire Island, the Pines in particular, is a bridge past a bridge too far, Iâm afraid. Not because I donât admire its moxie, its Speedo tan-ness, its louche, buggy reverie. I love that people love it. I just feel sad that Fire Island is something like Parisâa beautiful dream Iâll never be able to actually step into, that Iâll never feel filling me like air, like smoke. (I Juul nowâanother life update.) But itâs good to have that conclusionâto know, because of increasing adulthood and experience, that it, hey, just isnât for me. I wish it the best. I wanted to blow a kiss to the island as the ferry puttered away back toward Sayville. Goodbye, place! Goodbye, dream! Goodbye all you wonderful people who partied and yearned and grieved and fucked and fell in love there. See you in Ptown, maybe. All you lively ghosts, living and dead.
Fall trips loom. Film festivals, which are so much fun. Iâm going to Venice for the first time, next week, and I am so stressed and excited and curious. I booked an Airbnb thatâs not near the movies, thatâs on the main island with all the canals and handsome gondoliers and luring, leering pasta. (My Fire Island diet nearly killed me, readers.) I chose holistic life experience over festival ease in booking that place and I hope I donât regret it. And then itâs straight on to Toronto, a festival I love, a town I am growing to like, with people I know and with whom Iâm so ready to pretend itâs summer camp again. Fall camp. Autumn camp. What a good time that will be.
But it will keep me away. Iâve been away so much this year, which has been exhilaratingâI gave an award out on stage at a loud gay discotheque in Guadalajara, Mexico!âbut also lonely, and denying. The thing Iâve sort of stylistically held for the end here is that I fell in love this year, and while itâs a new-ish, only nine-month relationship (âWe have a baby,â I said to Andrew tonight), itâs still a totalizing thing. Itâs impossible to look at all of thisâparents moving, cities roiling, islands churningânot through the lens of that. How terrifically grounded I have felt this year, to something good and happy and intimate and huge in its smallness. This is the first time Iâve really written about himâa scientist, a smiler, a kind and gentle person who calms me and encourages meâand it feels a little scary to type it out. But there he is, suddenly a center.Â
When I was home over the 4th, my mom told my sister and me a story about our cousin, the one whose kid got married at the country club. I guess when this cousin was little, a toddler maybe, she would often say, âI need something.â Just that. That quiet little unspecific thing. âI need something,â sheâd say in a small voice, tugging at pant legs and looking up at the adults hoping theyâd understand and satisfy whatever it was she was asking for. Iâve thought about that a lot since my mom told us about it, there in the backyard Iâll never see again. I need something. I need something! I NEED SOMETHING!Â
Of course we all do. Need something. Need so many things. I get corny, thinking about it. I want to say what a mad and blissful and terrible adventure it is, to go chasing after that need. It is. But, again, thatâs hokey. So I guess Iâll just end this ramble with a little moment, from Fire Island. I went to bed early one night, and was half asleep when some of the boys of tea came home. I heard them rumbling around upstairs in the living room, muffled laughter and bottles opening. It reminded me of being a kid in the house I grew up in, that will now be lived in by a nice family from Framingham who wrote a heartening letter to my parents about how much they loved the house. That feeling of life happening just beyond the light under the door. And maybe it is. But in that room on Fire Island that night, there was also the beautiful dark, also the hum of the air conditioner, the whine of the mosquito, and there was me, breathing and blinking and alive. That was so much, too.Â

( shawn mendes, cismale, he/him ) i just saw MARCO SPIEGELMAN walking down the streetâs of provincetown the other day playing 100 BAD DAYS BY AJR out loud. rumor has it that the TWENTY TWO year old is WARMHEARTED, but can also be UNNECESSARILY OVERWROUGHT â overall theyâre a POLYMATH. they remind me of A WORN GUITAR NECK WITH OLD STRINGS, COMING HOME THREE MINUTES BEFORE CURFEW, A CRACKLING WOODFIRE, AND FRESHLY BLOWN OUT BIRTHDAY CANDLES. ( ophelia, 19, est, they/she )
hello guys, gals, and non-binary pals, my name is ophelia and itâs lovely to meet u all!! i am nineteen, living in florida, work at an escape game, and my t key on my laptop gets stuck so um if u ever see me leave a t out of a word thatâs why. also, fun fact!! iâm originally from a small town in ma about a two hour drive from provincetown :O but enough about me !! this is marco, heâs an actual meme, and you can read all about him under the cut. like this and iâll come slide into ur dms for plots. <3
(also this got way longer than anticipated, iâm sorry, pls love me)
PINTEREST.
tw: cancer, death, car crash, addiction
marco joshua spiegelman was born on an overcast august day in the city of boston, massachusetts. he was the fourth child and the youngest by seven years, meaning that in some way, he was his parentsâ last hope.
the spiegelman family practiced orthodox judaism â his dad was raised orthodox and his mom converted from reform judaism in order to marry his dadâ so marcoâs childhood was very much focused on religion. the spiegelman family went to services every friday night, celebrated every holiday, forced marco to wake up early on sundays to go to hebrew school, and treated him they same as they had treated his older siblings. however, as his siblings grew up and moved out, they all stopped devoutly practicing judaism and moved into a more modern and laid back interpretation of their religion. marco craved this from a young age, but because he was stuck at home with his parents, he was forced to follow their rules and beliefs.
marco went to jewish private school for elementary and middle school, had his bar mitzvah in the seventh grade, and tried to blend in as best as he could. he liked history and english, eager to learn more about the past and help shape the future. at this point in his life, he had his goal of becoming a politician pretty much set. he would help the end the fighting in israel, solve world hunger, and just be an all around awesome guy.
however, his plans shifted on valentineâs day his eighth grade year. after coming home from school, his parents sat him down and told him that his dad had stage four exocrine pancreatic cancer. he knew that his dad had been losing weight and not eating as much recently, as well as complained all the time that his back hurt, but marco didnât realize that it was something so terrible and life threatening.
with a survival rate of about one percent, the spiegelman family knew that his dadâs chances of survival were not good. the next few months were difficult, his dad went through lots of chemotherapy and experimental trials, but nothing seemed to be working, and he passed away before june. this crushed marco and his mom; his dad was a kind, gentle, and loving person, and the three of them had grown extremely close with each other due to marco being the youngest and the only child still living in the house.
it was hard for the two of them to live by themselves in a town that his mom didnât really have any connection to, so a few months after his dadâs passing, marco and his mom moved to provincetown, the place where she had grown up, to try and start fresh. their new beginning came coupled with the loss of their connection to their religion, and marco and his mom no longer practiced judaism
freshman year in a brand new town was intimidating for marco, and this resulted in him being extremely quiet and shy for the majority of the year. however, his history teacher saw how invested in history and current events he was and convinced marco to join the debate team. this is where he found his voice once again.
marco did a type of debate called public policy debate, a style of debate where you talk extremely fast and have to do an insane amount of research to ensure that you know what youâre talking about. in order to participate in that style of debate, his teacher assigned him a partner and he grew extremely close to her very quickly. the two of them went on to win the national title their sophomore and junior years
after joining debate, marco grew more confident in himself and began to talk more both in and out of class. being good at something gave him the boost he needed to no longer be shy, and he was well liked by most people at school. this was also when he found the snackpack, and he has always been grateful for their presence in his life. marcoâs sophomore and junior years were quite possibly the best years of his life.
however, right before the trophy ceremony his junior year, he got a call from his mom, telling him that his sister had gotten in to a car crash and that she was in a coma in a hospital in san francisco. marco flew to san fran immediately after receiving the call, leaving his partner to collect the trophy on his behalf.
for the following two weeks, marco rarely left the hospital for fear that his sister would pass away without him there. although the two of them were not that close, losing another family member was something that marco could not imagine. on the fifteenth day of her being in the hospital, the doctors said that there was nothing they could do to save his sister. so they harvested her organs as donations, and the spiegelmans were forced to put another member of their family into the ground.
senior year came around and marco was a changed person. he was not as passionate or confident as he used to be, he quit debate, and he focused on judaism again to try and give his life some meaning. however, he explored the type of judaism his sister was into, reform judaism, based more on learning and exploring the ideas of religion than sitting in a sanctuary and praying.
although he skipped school often and had mediocre grades, he managed to graduate, his dreams seeming unimportant and his life in shambles. throughout this, he still managed to keep a positive attitude, now convinced that god had a plan for him and that everything would work out fine. he does have really bad anxiety tho, so itâs this classic combination of trying to have faith in the way things work out but never really being sure that they will
without his debate professor, he wouldnât have even gotten into college, but with the help of someone making sure he followed through, he got into u mass amherst to study sustainable food & farming. this seemed like a out of the blue choice, but it combined marcoâs love of research & science, and allowed him to feel like he could have a greater impact on the world than he could as a politician.Â
college went by without incident, but here are some highlights (joined hillel and loved being w/ other jews, was a nerd, did nerd things **including a lot of acid, lived his best life)
he just graduated and is home for the summer, he has a job working for the local farmersâ market, and is just chillinâ, trying not to think about the other shoe that is bound to drop
heâs doing okay, and thatâs all heâll ever answer the question âhow are you?â with
headcanons:
marco worked as a waiter at an italian restaurant in high school so that he could have spending money. money was never a problem in his household as his mom is a cardiologist, but he always felt bad asking for money for things, so he made his own money instead
if marco was a crayola crayon, heâd be pine green. the color is a bit darker than most of the other greens in the crayola family, just like marco in his family, but also has a hint of blue in it, hinting at the sadness that lies beneath marcoâs outer layer.
marco really loves old school video games. his old nintendo 64 is collecting dust in his closet, and although he rarely has time to play it anymore, he refuses to throw it out. while growing up, video games were his way of connecting to his two older brothers, his older sister always watching on with a disapproving gleam in her eye. whenever the siblings get together, however, they always manage to turn on an old, favorite game of theirs, and the competition is always heated
in high school, marco smoked a lot of weed. he would always be seen outside at any high school party, smoking by himself or with a group of other people. however, after graduating, marco switched to cigarettes. he smokes frequently, but will furiously deny being addicted if approached about it
marco plays as waluigi when he plays mario kart/party

The Future Is Brighton -Â Boston Pads
New Balance has nearly single-handedly changed the face of Brighton. Now, if only others would follow in its footsteps.
Head west on the Mass. Pike, perhaps on your drive home from work, and within minutes the stately brownstones of Bostonâs Back Bay fall away and are replaced by a bleak stretch of urban blight. Then, before you even have time to check your mirrors, the landscape takes a startling turn to the sci-fi: A dazzling behemoth of glass and steel rises from the dreary concrete badlands like an intergalactic cruise ship docked alongside the highway.
Youâd be forgiven if your first thought was, What the hell is that?
Itâs a question that workers inside the futuristic new buildingâthe global headquarters of New Balance and its $3.7 billion sneaker empireâhave gotten used to answering since it opened in 2015. The structure âisnât anything other than what people want it to be,â says Jim Halliday, managing director of NB Development Group, New Balanceâs construction arm. âItâs got a little bit of a shoe motif to itââin fact, its swooping curves stem from the running track that encircles the buildingââbut if you ask the architect, heâll tell you itâs to invoke movement.â It also so happens to be a striking symbol of change for the area.
Brighton has long amounted to Bostonâs take on flyover country. A former industrial center that lost its lifeblood somewhere in the mid-â60s, this no-manâs land seemed worlds away from the more-vibrant streets of Allston. Before the Mass. Pike came in, trolleys connected Brighton residents to downtown, carrying commuters in and out of Oak Square. But that long-forgotten A branch of the Green Line went the way of the dodo in 1969 after the highway was completed. That left only the most remote tendrils of the MBTAâs network of grumbling buses to service the neighborhood. In turn, students and other bargain hunters, seduced by Brightonâs dirt-cheap housing, found themselves cut off from civilization if they didnât own a car. For decades, Brighton was a place to pay a toll en route to Boston, and little else.
These days, however, Brighton is crackling with activityâand New Balanceâs footprints are all over it. In âBoston Landing,â CEO Jim Davisâs 1.4-million-square-foot brainchild, the company has helped transform what used to be a squat, nondescript distribution center into a thriving hub of new local businesses and residences flanked by green spaces along walkable Guest Street, the developmentâs central promenade. Nearby at the Lincoln Bar & Grill, you can order the New Balance burgerâa veggie patty topped with cheese, lettuce, and tomato, as to befit the so-called health district. Meanwhile, for the first time in a generation, the Bruins are practicing in Boston, at the state-of-the-art Warrior Ice Arena just a few steps away from New Balance HQâand when the teamâs away, youth hockey programs and beer leagues take their turn on the pristine sheet. Next year, the Celtics will follow suit with a sleek, cantilevered building that puts the teamâs 17 championship banners on full display for passersby on the Mass. Pike. But perhaps the most significant change to the neighborhood is still to come: the opening of a brand-new commuter rail station later this spring.
Exciting as it is, itâs perhaps more interesting to note that whatâs happening in Brightonâwhere big business is joining forces with local government to forge responsible urban renewalâis a refutation of the conventional wisdom that public funding is the only way to build neighborhoods in this town. You want public transit? Donât wait around for the MBTA to fish quarters out of its sofaâpay for and build a stop yourself. Ditto for sidewalks and streets. In fact, if Boston Landing is any indication, public-private partnerships could be the key to ensuring that as companies benefit from their new Boston Pads CEOÂ Demetrios Salpoglou, so do their communities and surroundings. Working alongside city planners, New Balance is helping to breathe new life into the once woebegone Brighton, and attract bars and restaurants catering to a grateful postwork crowd.
This is in stark contrast to many other instances of Bostonâs building boom. The late Mayor Tom Meninoâs rule-by-fiat approach to city planning transformed the limitless potential of the Seaportâa rare opportunity to start fresh in a city so often hampered by its historyâinto little more than a cold Blade Runner set piece of high-end chain restaurants and big-name tech companies, devoid of street life or even a decent grocery store. Brighton had other ideas in mindâand it may just provide a blueprint for everyone else.
Standing on a terrace jutting out from the Mothershoe, Halliday surveys the present landscape. Before us stretches a patchwork of construction sites dotted by dozens of workers in hardhats, bringing the dreamy renderings of the Celticsâ new home and a world-class track-and-field facility to fruition. But Halliday also sees the past. New Balance, he points out, is by no means a newcomer to Brighton. The shoemaker planted its flag here in 1976, 70 years after the companyâs founding, and has remained a bedrock of the community ever since. Halliday points to each of New Balanceâs four former Brighton residences, visible from our perch. âIt was an industrial area that was dying,â he tells me. âOne of the things we did coming out here was, before we filed plans with the city, we actually went to the community, talked about the kinds of things we would like to accomplish in conjunction with hearing back from them what they would like to accomplish.â
This fusion of past and future is part of the headquarters itself. Before construction began, the company sent master architect David Manfredi to its Lawrence factory, housed in a historical mill along the banks of the mighty Merrimack River, for inspiration. As a result, the interior of the futuristic structure takes a few design cues from the regionâs industrial past, with lofty ceilings and impossibly long hallways lined with low-impact track material in case employees want to squeeze in a midday run.
The breakneck pace of construction at Boston Landing is truly impressiveâyou can actually observe it in real time. Leaving New Balanceâs headquarters after my hourlong tour, I spotted three new stone benches near the entrance that hadnât existed when I arrived.
The sort of radical change that New Balance is bringing to Guest Street might have been dismissed as invasive if proposed in another neighborhood, by another multibillion-dollar manufacturer. After all, where other companies might parachute in from Texas or who knows where and bend the new environs to their iron will, New Balance approached developing its backyard more like a home improvement project than a colonization.
Of course, itâs not strictly altruismâitâs shrewd business strategy. âYouâre not going to be able to attract the best and the brightest and treat this as a destination unless you provide a reason for people to be out walking the streets,â says Keith Craig, NB Developmentâs infrastructure expert. âYou typically think of that as something a government does, but in this case, we could do it faster. We wanted to do it our way.â
New Balance started by planning out a grid of streets with spacious 15-foot sidewalks built to city specs, new lighting, and below-grade utilities, alleviating traffic between Market and North Beacon streets. Then, with these improvements in place, the company signed its first wave of retailânot big chains, but a largely local mix carefully curated for the neighborhood. In came KĆhi Coffee Company (founded in Provincetown), Rail Stop Restaurant and Bar (owned by the Gloucester-based Beauport Hospitality Group), and New Hampshireâs Flatbread Company, which hopes to attract the same crowd of families and twentysomethings that frequents its bowling-and-pizza concept in Davis Square.
But handcrafted lattes and wood-fired pies donât mean all that much if people have no means of getting to themâso the linchpin of the Boston Landing plan would be the creation of a new transportation hub. Waiting for Bostonâs beleaguered transit agency to come to the rescue wasnât an option, so New Balance took matters into its own hands. âThe T has always had a station stop somewhere approximate to here as part of one of their capital projects, but given the backlog and the issues that the DOT and the MBTA have had in the last few years, the prospect of us getting one any time soon was even more years out,â Craig says. âSo we thought that this might be a win-win, where we could propose that we can take on a lot of the cost, build the station, do what the T was going to do anyway, just a lot quicker.â
To get it done, New Balance began negotiating with state transportation officials for a commuter rail stop. Encouraged by the Tâs renovation and expansion of the Yawkey stop in the shadow of Fenway Park, New Balance drafted an agreement with MassDOT and the MBTA to build its own rail station on the Framingham/Worcester Line. In October 2015, construction crews broke ground. New Balance held all the contracts and tapped architecture firm STV to design the Boston Landing station to the Tâs specifications. The company wanted a double-sided station to get the preferred train schedules, andâat the request of T officials concerned with upkeepâchanged the color from a bright green to muted beige. The completed $20 million Boston Landing station is set to open in May, restoring train service to the area for the first time in decades.
New Balance accomplished this in three years, while Somervilleâs Green Line Extension has suffered delays and mismanagement, allowing costs to pile up. Can you blame the company for opting to open its checkbook, rather than wait to have the stateâs latest publicly funded boondoggle foisted upon it? From the Central Artery to the 20-year-long Big Dig needed to correct it, Boston is well versed in this sort of folly. Itâs worth noting that New Balance built its own commuter rail stop before the MBTA even broke ground on its publicly funded one in Allston, which had been first announced by then-Governor Deval Patrick three years ago.
The transformation of AllstonâBrightonâs Piscean twinâfrom the grungy home of Rubinoff-soaked undergrads to something a bit more refined is already under way, with the ripple effects of New Balanceâs presence having spread far beyond Guest Street. âThereâs been a real transition in the last five years,â says Max Toste, who has spent a combined 15 years in Allston-Brighton. He first moved to the neighborhood in 1996, because âthatâs where all the musicians were.â Now he has a particularly good vantage point to observe the changing face of Allston: Toste owns Deep Ellum and Lone Star, two popular adjoined watering holes on Cambridge Street that serve $12 pours of Trillium beer, piping-hot tacos, stick-to-your-ribs brunches, and a glorious invention known as the âMexican happy mealââa shot of tequila, a pint of Modelo Especial, and a side of sangrita. Back when he opened Deep Ellum in 2007, skeptics told him he was crazy for offering anything beyond turkey tips and 20-cent wings in the heart of Allstonâmuch less an upscale hipster bar.
Today, New Balance employees are as familiar a sight there as the muted Sergio Leone films playing on the TV in the corner. âThereâs been this interesting demographic shift. Iâve noticed the neighborhood is majorly in flux,â Toste says. âAnd my neighbors mention it a lot as well, because a lot of themâmy neighbors, meaning other businesses, who rely really heavily on the student populationâhave been a little harder hit by this sort of flux.â
Considering the frenzy of construction thatâs taken hold of our city in recent years, you might think Brightonâs current development boom was all but inevitable. But thereâs an alternate history worth examining: The Guest Street property was originally earmarked for something very differentâa Loweâs big-box home improvement storeâuntil residents beat that proposal down. Itâs difficult to imagine that the behemoth hardware chain wouldâve had the same transformative effect on its surroundings as New Balance has with Boston Landing. Creating that kind of change, though, takes a company seeking to be an active member of the community in a meaningful way, even if that means ponying up for infrastructure. As Boston becomes a business destination, welcoming big names such as General Electric and Reebok, New Balanceâs example is setting the gold standard.

Afrofutures donât collide; they coalesce and emerge.
Published in conjunction with The Tenth magazine and Home Box Office (HBO), Fall 2018Â
+++
I never had the luxury of âsummeringâ on weekends in California as a youth. When I was older, I would understand a different meaning and a vastly different culture around that rumination. Summering for me, was spending the day at Catalina Island off the coast of Long Beach, California. Once I moved to New York, I knew white associates who would venture to peninsula towns such as Sag Harbor or Cape Cod with their Vera Bradley weekend bags and deep-v tee shirts in tow, getting their much-needed break from city life at the commence of Summer Fridays.
There are white spaces. There are gay, white spaces. And there are black people entering those spaces. Entering the space that weekend was an homage to our ancestors who surrendered the great bounty. Freedom.
Our journey with each other started before we knew it had.
I couldnât sleep a wink before we set off to Provincetown that Sunday morning. At 5:45 am my phone rang, it was Darnell outside in the taxi. I tiredly made my way down my first-floor walk-up to meet him outside and we were off to Pennsylvania Station. Upon first sight of one another we began to laugh. Perhaps it was just fatigue, but none of it mattered because we were so curious as to what the next few days would bring.
As we boarded our train at Penn Station, we a saw a tall, beautiful black man with a lovely smile near us in line and knew that he must be part of our tribe. We all met eyes and knew we must be together, and so we were. After sharing some laughter and handshakes, Steven, Darnell, and I made our way towards the trainâs âquiet car.â We sat, cupped our laughter through our fingers, and enjoyed the journey ahead. Before the train disembarked, one lady swiftly gathered her things and moved several seats ahead of us no less than five minutes of us sitting near her. At this juncture, the clock nearly struck 7 am and this is how we felt. We were not going to dim, bother or apologize for the black boy joy that washed over our faces. There was no stifling the next four hours of Afrofuture bonding that would ensue on this train car. These are the moments we cherish and only we can mark them for ourselves.
Nearly four hours later, we arrived at Bostonâs South Station. As we stood in line awaiting the ferry, I noticed a brother in a denim bucket cap standing in front of us holding onto his bags as the sky began to sprinkle on us.
Darnell wasnât having any of it, so he rushed off to snag a courtesy umbrella from the ticket kiosk.
I murmured to myself, âWhy canât I ever pull off a bucket hat?â
Moments later, the denim-clad brother turned around. It was AndrĂ©! He and I had only met once, but Iâd recognize that smile from a mile away. At this time, Darnell was hurriedly walking with an umbrella from the kiosk. We all embraced, laughed, and once Darnell returned, we boarded the ferry as one.
Then, I told AndrĂ© what I had murmured about his bucket hat. He responded, âCan anyone wear a bucket hat? You just have to wear it!â
Touché, I thought.
But hidden in that statement was a brother who realized the far-reaching beauty of us. In his eyes, nothing could torch that, not even a throwback denim bucket cap.
As we boarded the ferry, we all found our seats. I looked about immediately. We were the only black faces. There may have been more, but no more than I can count on one hand. It didnât take long for us to start talking about the ancestral waters we were crossing. I thought of slave ports along Americaâs eastern seaboard. I thought of slave ships. I thought of freedom. I thought of this freedom we had. I thought of black folk. And I thought of our souls. And because I was turned toward the other passengers on the boat, I could see the faces of intrigue and exasperation as we spoke pure facts on this ferry ride to Cape Cod. We spoke kitchen-table talk about being black, gay, and unbothered in this country. This feeling was all heightened as we journeyed across these choppy waters. The weather doubled the length of the trip so the passengers who sat near us had to gag for nearly two hours. Though, I could visibly see one or two of the passengers intrigued at our conversation. But this conversation was for us. Yet, we were all captive and they would have to listen.
It was quite lyrical, just like Claudia Rankineâs Citizen. âI feel most colored when I am thrown against a sharp white background.â
On our way to âvacationâ we were very intentional in our thoughts. But, as queer black people. I am often aware. We are often aware. So, then I thought are we ever free of those thoughts? Are we allowed to be free of them? Should we be free of them? In order for there to be liberation, there must be a body count that had to exist for that liberation to occur. We ferried across those waters that kept those bodies.
The next day we sat along the sandy beach and I watched my brothers swim and laugh. I watched André swim and wash his stones and gaze out to the beyond. His body was continually baptized and bathed. Oshun had spread the fullness of her libation among my brother while I sipped on a pre-made cocktail on a weekday.
---
The Tenth is the representation of art and service in its true expression as a vision realized by W.E.B DuBois. It is service to our ancestors as we pick up the pieces and the wholes of what they left for us to stand upon. Our art today is in conversation with that art they provided for us, by any means necessary.
I will remember and call upon that radical love that swept through the Cape far into my days. Far far into my thoughts. And by far, far into this body.
