Wolf 359 historical AUs I would/will/want to write for AU Roulette if I can summon the time & energy:
Nineteenth Century Whalers. Captain Minkowski is captain of the whaling ship Hephaestus but the ship's figurehead is an image of the goddess Hera and also she can talk don't question it. It is a shitty ship and shitty crew and shitty job. There are only three of them because reasons. They are chasing a mystical White Whale for their boss back in Boston which they aren't even sure exists. They find Lovelace marooned on an island; the captain of the previous crew sent after the Whale by Mr. Cutter. She has 19th Century Novel Trauma Amnesia. She can't remember what happened to her. (What happened to her was her whole crew died and the whale rammed and destroyed her ship and she was swallowed by the whale and spent an undisclosed amount of time in the belly of the whale before being ejected Changed.)
1200s BCE Aegean. Captain Minkowski is once again the captain of a ship, a like, knockoff Argo with the rejected Argonauts trying to find some mystical artifact like the Golden Fleece (the Golden Apples that grant eternal life?) for her wanax. It's part of her mandatory military service the way Late Helladic Mycaenean city-states would do. For Eiffel it's a punishment and he does not want to go on this quest at All. Their boat can talk because magic and they named it the Hera after the queen of the gods as a blatant attempt to curry favor with a powerful goddess for protection. Lovelace has once again been shipwrecked, betrayed by the wanax and the gods and Very Angry about it.
Western. I don't know enough about Westerns to construct a plot but Minkowski is one of the Eastern European immigrants they sent to Texas to try to build up the white population and Lovelace is the daughter of a well-off Black family from New York so what is she doing in Texas and Hera is Eiffel's talking horse that he stole. Or maybe she stole him. They disagree. Cutter is probably trying to single handedly annex and become emperor of Mexico.
#Wolf 359#putting the ideas out here#AURoulette2023#postapocalypse meanwhile would be a Bad End Decima Apocalypse AU

Hockey Fast Facts
In which a series of random hockey facts are presented to teach the history of the NHL
@heliads
The NHL was founded on November 26th, 1917 and was founded after the suspension of the National Hockey Association
Initially the NHL only consisted of 4 teams for the initial 1917-1918 and all four were based in Canada. The only still active team is the Montreal Canadiens who have often been referred to as the Habs.
Although there were a few teams who joined the NHL after that first season in 1917, none of those teams are still in existence. The second oldest team in the NHL are the Boston Bruins who first joined in the 1924-1925 season. That season consisted of 6 teams in total.
Divisions were first introduced in the 1926-1927 season and consisted of the Canadian and American divisions although one team from New York was included in the Canadian division. Today there are four divisions: the Atlantic, Metropolitan, Central, and Pacific divisions.
You may come to hear of people referring to some teams as part of the ‘Original Six’. This is in reference to the six teams that made up the NHL from the 1942 season through the 1967 season. The teams in question are the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, and Toronto Maple Leafs.
The 1967-1968 team introduced 6 new teams to the NHL and creating the East and West Divisions of the NHL. The Original Six were made a part of the Eastern Division with the new 6 teams making up the West Division. Although the divisions would change in seasons after, the East and West Divisions would eventually return and are still used to this day.
Many teams came and went but by the 1974-1975 season, a total of 18 teams were active in the NHL. This season brought change to the NHLs game structure with the introduction of teams being split into Conferences and then Divisions. The Conferences were: Prince of Wales Conference (holding the Adams and Norris divisions). And the Campbell Conference (holding the Patrick and Smythe divisions)
The 1979-1980 season saw a total of 21 teams in the NHL as the WHA (World Hockey Association) disbanded. The four teams were the Winnipeg Jets, Edmonton Oilers, New England Whalers, and Quebec Nordiques. Only the Jets and Oilers are current teams.
The 1993-1994 season saw a change in title to the Conferences and Divisions as well as teams rearranging and landing in different divisions. The Eastern and Western Conferences with the Atlantic, Metropolitan, Central, and Pacific divisions is the current format to this day. However from the 1998 season through the 2013-2014 season there were 3 divisions per Conference.
No hockey was played in the 2004-2005 season due to an unresolved lockout. As such no Stanley Cup was awarded and what is engraved on the Cup for this instance is ‘Season Not Played’
For the most part that brings us to how the league stands today. There were a few more team expansions which bring up the total number of competing teams to 32 but that’s basically league history
Note: I am planning some info posts about the teams where I’ll go more in depth on aspects like expansions, important players, etc. Wanted to keep this post fairly straightforward and as short as I could for the time being!

Apples.
Nobody stands and peels apples just for themselves. Peeling apples is something which only gets done when preparing a special meal for someone else.
There’s something in the repetitive motions of choosing one, feeling it’s round weight in my hand, laying it onto the wooden board, and slicing downwards through its heart….
Little black seeds huddled together, are suddenly exposed to the light. The peel slips off as the knife wobbles its way along the curve - the naked slice plonks into the bowl.
My mind toddles backwards into memory of other days of peeling apples. Always a day with a feast at the end of it. Anticipation and preparation inside a kitchen.
Kitchens change. Homes and younger days spread out behind me like the wake behind a Boston Whaler. It doesn’t take many pulls to get that old engine going - and away I go backwards into holidays long passed.
Grandma Harper, always in aprons, stands firmly planted in 1962. She is peeling apples into a green Pyrex bowl. Aunts and uncles and cousins talk loudly in the next room. The kitchen is a dream of delicious roast-beef-and-mashed-potatoes steam that fogs the window behind the porcelain sink.
My 1968 mom is hacking up apples and complaining about the injustice of holiday meals (and holidays in general. Misery incarnate.)
The scent of apples. I’m in the kitchen of my first apartment in Providence, it’s 1977 and I’m determined to bake an apple pie. Betty Crocker in her red-and-white checked clothbound cover, is propped up on the drain board. The first of a lifetime of pies -ALL delicious.
Friends and boyfriends and a previous husband have all loved apple pies from my oven. A series of apartments and kitchens and relationships roll past - the scent of peeling apples and damp dish towels…
I’m in the kitchen of our apartment in the Meatpacking District. It’s 1996 and I’m peeling apples at the table while three toddlers play on the linoleum floor at my feet. Apple pie is happening, and the Macys Thanksgiving parade is on TV.
Christmas 2001, and my daughters want to help me peel apples. I show them how, and they do their best. Lumpy, but delicious - I hope they will remember standing at my side, and the scent of cinnamon.
Teenagers stay upstairs as I peel. They gather around the table, we eat the days work - gobble the pie - and they disappear again.
Young adults. 2015. The girls wander into the kitchen, and do a little peeling. It doesn’t last long, and off they go again. I fill the bowl with slices and reach for the rolling pin.
I find myself in Ireland. I stand in the kitchen peeling apples for the first Irish pie. One part apple, two part tears. I’m so heartbroken I can’t even breathe - there’s nobody to help me peel. My girls are grown and thousands of miles away. Maybe they will peel some apples of their own today? I wipe my face on my sleeve, and keep cutting.
Easter 2024. And I’m peeling apples.
Big, ugly green apples called “Bramley’s” - weird shapes and twisted cores, but perfect to cook with. Today these will become applesauce to cuddle up next to the very dry turkey, and keep it company on our plates.
I wonder how many more years I can coax my fingers to close neatly around the paring knife? Stiff and tired, numb and fumbly- they are giving me trouble that I don’t want to talk about. I lean over the pot on the stove, stirring as they relax into themselves. Cinnamon dumped into the brew - the scent is exquisite. It knocks me backwards into all the years and all the times and all the friends, lovers and random strangers …
Peeling apples is an act of love.

Phillis Wheatley: The Unsung Black Poet Who Shaped the US
She is believed to be the first enslaved person and first African American to publish a book of poetry. She also forced the US to reckon with slavery's hypocrisy.
— Rediscovering America | Black History | New England | USA | North America | Tuesday February 21st, 2023 | By Robin Catalano
When the Dartmouth sliced through the frigid waters of Boston Harbor on 28 November 1773, the Quaker-owned whaler carried a cargo that included 114 chests of British East India Company tea. Eighteen days later, the tea, along with 228 additional trunks from the soon-to-arrive Beaverand Eleanor, would play a starring role in the US Colonies' most iconic act of resistance, which ultimately led to the Revolutionary War.
In the Dartmouth's hold was another precious cargo: freshly printed copies of Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral, a collection by Phillis Wheatley, the first enslaved person, first African American woman and third female in the US colonies to publish a book of poetry. Her life and work would become emblematic of the US struggle for freedom, a tale whose most visible representation – the Boston Tea Party, when American colonists protested Britain's "taxation without representation" by dumping tea into the harbour – celebrates its 250th anniversary this year.
Evan O'Brien, creative manager of the Boston Tea Party & Ships Museum, said, "Our mission, especially this year, is to talk not just about the individuals who were onboard the vessels, destroying the tea, but everyone who lived in Boston in 1773, including Phillis Wheatley."

Actor Cathryn Philippe, who interprets Wheatley at the museum, connected with the poet's remarkable accomplishments. "You often hear about the tragedy of enslavement, which is a part of history that needs to be understood. But we don't hear much about the joy or successes of enslaved or formerly enslaved Africans."
Wheatley was born in what is now Senegal or Gambia and was abducted in 1761 when she was just seven or eight years old. Forced, along with 94 other Africans, aboard the slave-trading brigantine Phillis, she survived the treacherous Middle Passage, which claimed the lives of nearly two million enslaved people – including a quarter of the Phillis' "cargo" – over a 360-year period, and arrived on Boston's shores that summer.
“We Shouldn't Hesitate To Call Her A Genius”
Frail after eight weeks at sea, the girl caught the attention of wealthy merchant and tailor John Wheatley. He purchased the child as a gift for his wife, Susanna, and renamed her after the vessel that had spirited her away from her home.
Phillis showed a natural aptitude for language. David Waldstreicher, professor of history at the City University of New York and author of the forthcoming biography The Odyssey of Phillis Wheatley, said, "She became fluent and culturally literate and able to write poems in English so quickly that we shouldn't hesitate to call her a genius."
Despite Wheatley's connection to the Boston Tea Party, her legacy remains largely unknown (Credit: Robin Catalano)
Although the Wheatleys were not abolitionists (they enslaved several people, and segregated Phillis from them) they recognised Phillis' talents and encouraged her to study Latin, Greek, history, theology and poetry. Inspired by the likes of Alexander Pope and Isaac Watts, she stayed up at night, writing heroic couplets and elegies to notable figures by candlelight. She published her first verse, in the Newport Mercury, at age 13.
While many New Englanders took note of the poet's gifts, no American printer would publish a book by a Black writer. Poems on Various Subjects was eventually financed by Selina Hastings, Countess of Huntingdon, and published in London. As a 19-year-old in 1773, Phillis travelled to the city, escorted by the Wheatleys' son. She was an instant sensation. Her celebrity, along with England's criticism of a new nation that simultaneously subjugated her while comparing its own relationship to the Crown as slavery, led the Wheatleys to manumit her in 1774.
A keen observer, Phillis frequently wrote about significant moments in America's fight for independence, carefully walking a fine line between being overtly political or critical of the colonial government as a Black woman. As a 14-year-old in 1768, she praised King George III in the poem To the King's Most Excellent Majesty for repealing the Stamp Act. Two years later, in On the Death of Mr. Snider Murder'd by Richardson, she memorialised the killing of 12-year-old Christopher Snider by a Massachusetts-born Loyalist during a protest over imported British goods.
Soon after, in 1770, a skirmish between Colonists and British soldiers erupted in front of the Old State House, not far from where Phillis lived on King Street, culminating in the Boston Massacre. Today, a circle of granite pavers, its bronze letters dulled by age and thousands of footsteps, marks the spot where blood was spilled. Following the incident, Phillis was inspired to write the poem On the Affray in King Street, on the Evening of the 5th of March, 1770.

Scholars estimate that Phillis produced upwards of 100 poems. Because her work makes few references to her own condition and is often couched in Christian concepts and the extolling of popular figures of the day, she has sometimes been dismissed as a white apologist.
Ade Solanke, a writer and Fulbright Scholar whose play Phillis in London will be performed in Boston later this year, said, "I think the biggest misconception about her is that she wasn't an abolitionist. You think of Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, people who were explicitly condemning slavery and going to war against it. But the act of writing poetry as a Black woman in this time period was pretty radical."
Wendy Roberts, a University at Albany professor who recently discovered a lost Wheatley poem in a Quaker commonplace book in Philadelphia, agrees. "I don't think any deep reader of Wheatley comes away thinking she's an apologist. She was asserting herself, her agency, her wish for freedom, her presence as a person."
Most buildings in Boston with a direct connection to Phillis' life no longer stand. Some were razed by a pair of fires in the 18th and 19th Centuries, and others have been replaced by urban renewal in the mid-1900s. The Old South Meeting House, a stately Georgian red-brick church built in 1729 and tucked between glass-and-concrete skyscrapers on Washington Street, is an exception. Besides being Phillis's place of worship, it was a cradle of philosophical debate, and served as planning headquarters for the Boston Tea Party. It now operates as a museum, with a statue of the poet flanked by exhibits on other ground-breaking figures from the pre- and post-Revolutionary eras.

The writer almost certainly strolled through 50-acre Boston Common, the country's oldest public park (and site of the newly unveiled, and controversial, statue honouring Civil Rights icons Martin Luther King and Coretta Scott King). Phillis may have conducted the Wheatley family's shopping at Faneuil Hall, once the city's main marketplace for household goods – and located next to where enslaved people were once sold. It's now a retail centre, where visitors can pick up souvenirs, sample a variety of foods, or take a tour with a guide outfitted in 18th-Century breeches, waistcoat and tricorne hat.
Some experts speculate that Phillis participated in funeral processions for Snider and the five victims of the Boston Massacre, in which their coffins were paraded from Faneuil Hall to the Granary Burying Ground – also the final resting place of Revolutionaries like Samuel Adams, John Hancock and Paul Revere. Sombre and quiet, the cemetery bears more than 2,000 slate, greenstone and marble gravestones, many carved with traditional Puritan motifs like blank-eyed death's heads and frowning angels.
Phillis, who died in poverty after developing pneumonia at age 31, is thought to be buried in an unmarked grave, with her deceased newborn child, at Copp's Hill, in Boston's North End neighbourhood. An elegant statue of her, alongside renderings of women's rights advocate Abigail Adams and abolitionist Lucy Stone, holds court over the Commonwealth Avenue Mall. This year, when a replica of the Dartmouth sails into the Boston Tea Party & Ships Museum on Griffin's Wharf, it will host a permanent exhibit on the poet.
In addition to a statue of Wheatley at the Boston Women's Memorial, a second statue of her is located inside the Old South Meeting House (Credit: Robin Catalano)
Phillis's legacy is perhaps best experienced in the work of contemporary artists. As part of the 250th anniversary celebrations, Revolution 250, a consortium of 70 organisations dedicated to exploring Revolutionary history, will host a variety of performances and exhibits, including a full-scale re-enactment of the Tea Party on 16 December. Several events will honour the poet, among them a photography exhibit by Valerie Anselme, who will recreate Phillis' frontispiece that adorned the original publication of Poems on Various Subjects.
Artist Amanda Shea, who frequently hosts spoken word events and poetry readings around the city, explained that, in many ways, she is carrying on a legacy pioneered so long ago. "I feel like I'm part of the continuum of Phillis Wheatley. It's really important to be able to write and tell our stories. It's our duty as artists to reflect the times in which we live."

Further there are more companies that we purchased now they're in pre-purchase but really we were telling what we purchased so just going to put the percentage usually we don't say pre-purchasing unless we're doing that all the companies that preceded this purchased at the percentages
" DeSantis iron and yes it is related to the governor it's his family they acquired the company 10 years ago and it's 90% of the steel in Florida and it is a decent size company although there's not much steel here there's a lot of rebar we won't be using a rebar but okay we can use it for other things that we need it they do construction that's what it's for and we have 80% of it, slew of small steel and iron companies a lot of them have their own smelting and some of them have minds all together 8% of the world's steel and iron industry and we acquired 100% of it mostly except for this company and a few others.
*millwrights and some company that does machining for all sorts of things and mostly engines and we acquired this company it is at 80%. It's about 30% of the world's parts production for motors and they supply most of the Pistons that's what they specialize in places like Ford motor company Briggs & Stratton they make their own parts that attach to the piston and throw rods and everything and there are a lot of parts in the motor usually but ours are a little simpler and it's going to make it easier
*Costco logistics their warehouses 80% and Sam's at 70% bj at 40% and Walmart at 10% and we're beginning to take over the shipping and trucking for everything and people want to see us break these pseudo empire and then they want to take it back they say
*there are a few more things that we acquired one of them makes mini bikes and it's not Coleman it's Briggs & Stratton at 60% we have controlling share we're going to do tons of stuff we have huge numbers the voters to make they're trying orders in Megan Merkel ordered 500,000 no she ordered 500 trillion last week and has has not seen any of them and is desperate and is called for the lawn mowers and she's going to make the super car it's true it's a supercar goes so fast so we're going to ask her to send an order in and yeah we'll have to have a meeting and we're going to bring some motors we make them different already no it's a shower that we have motors and there's a shipping agreement and everything there's a lot of money to be made but people are not building so she'll be surprised when we show up with them and yes she has to make sure it's real and Coleman engines and other we have 80% of it and that's new today is happy about it there's other companies but we will start making small boats and for her company she wants a boat and she has to design it he says she's really happy about that they have a couple boat companies that they bought from but she wants to make a Coleman. Used to make them when was the rowboat and the design is adequate but we have to change it because of the plastic but it will do for a haul but really we need to make a new boat and with Coleman there usually ponds and rivers and lakes and lake boats and intercoastal waterway only and she's aware of that so it's really not important to make it ocean Worthy but there will be a lot of waves these days and so she's conscious to that and so she's going to design it and we'll look at it and it's going to be fun and she wants to use his system and RTA send it off with a trailer and stuff in it an Open boat 15 ft would be about 7,500 unassembled and $15,000 assembled and people are saying ooh wow that's what it is. And it's plasticy.
*we bought several more companies and their boat companies chaparral 70% begin production tomorrow and we are using our system yes, Boston whaler 30%, Grady White 20%, Chris Craft 20%, they want to keep building boats and they're not building them. There's a few companies that is not familiar with that are making tons of boats it's like Felipe or something no he's seeing them and he knows it's black watch and there's a few companies donzi and we have 0%, Viking we have 0% and there's a few more but we are trying to buy them out and Bayliner 0% with these companies we're going to start our own already and we know how to do it well chaparral has a different division and it's a different boat name we are going to mention more companies probably later on this morning
Thor Freya
Olympus
Zues Hera
We have an acquiring dirt bike companies and motorcycle companies and you know about Harley-Davidson it hasn't changed yet but KTM we have 10%, Husqvarna 10% pretty much are all 10% the Japanese bikes are 0% Chinese bikes are 0%? Even issue here is not building bikes we need bikes and scooters and we don't own the Harley-Davidson company and we're waiting. We do not have a scooter company no we do have a scooter company and it's Daniel's scooter no we have a scooter company and it's not even Chinese and it's not a Time it's not Italian and it's American but we don't want to mention the name is so 60 70 80 cc scooters or something no they sell the ones we mentioned they look rancid motorcycles really that look like Harley's and sort of he says why not build the one that looks like a Coleman so we can make the Coleman and Enduro with a little less wide tire people love that that'll sell like crazy so I'm going to start on that and his other idea is to use the scooter company and we're going to go ahead with it

Kicks down the door to talk about whaler George Johnson, on the subject of whalers falling Somewhere Under The LGBTQ Umbrella. I mentioned Johnson before on this post, in a discussion of women disguising themselves as whalers. I hadn’t found much more written about Johnson’s experience up to this point. BUT! Jen Manion’s book Female Husbands: A Trans History was able to trace Johnson’s life long after that voyage. Rather than a circumstantial donning of an identity to fit in on a ship, it seems Johnson continued to live as a man in the years that followed as well.
In 1849, Ann Johnson of Rochester New York signed on the whaleship the Christopher Mitchell under the name George Johnson. Well-liked on the ship, later newspapers characterized the seven months Johnson was a whaler:
“She performed her duty faithfully for the seven months previous to her discovery, never shrinking from going aloft, even in the worst weather or the darkest night. She also pulled her oar twice in pursuit of whales, but the boat in which she belonged had never been fast to one of the monsters, or perhaps her courage might have failed her. She was a general favorite on board, never mixing with the crew any more than was absolutely necessary. Her quiet inoffensive behavior has also very much prepossessed the Captain and his officers in her favor.“ —Emancipator & Republican, Boston Mass, Jan 31 1850
After the whaling voyage Johnson was shortly arrested in the Five Points neighborhood in New York under suspicions of larceny meaning…spending the hard-earned from that whaling trip and the cops were like ‘THAT’S A LOT OF MONEY CLEARLY IT ISN’T YOURS.’
Before the magistrate, Johnson related where it came from.
“Consequently to fulfill her designs, she proceeded to Nantucket, under the garb of a sailor, and took passage in a whaling ship for a three years’ cruise. In this disguise the young woman maintained her position among the other men in the forecastle for over seven months, until the 5th of July, after rounding Cape Horn, the ship put into Pico for water, and while the ship thus lay at anchor by a mere accident her sex was discovered. The fact was soon communicated to the captain who transferred his female sailor to the care of the American Consul.” The paper went on to characterize Johnson as having a “very good looking countenance, short stature and broad built; her hair was cut short; she both chewed and smoked tobacco, and talked sailor lingo very fluently, which is generally of a plain nature, embellished now and then in their own way.” —Boston Daily Mail, Jan 17 1850.
In the years that followed, Johnson moved to Pittsburg and worked in factories, on riverboats, and had a brief but unsuccessful stint trying to open a fruit and confectionary shop. During all those years, Johnson lived as a man. On returning to work at a whip factory, this time in Westfield Massachusetts, Johnson’s identity was yet again ‘discovered’ and opined on in the papers in 1856.
“A Male Girl — A Young Woman has been working in the factory of the American whip company at Westfield, Massachusetts during the last six months, attired in male clothes. She pretended to be a nice young man of 17, smoked strong cigars, was a successful beau among the young ladies, and acted her part as a modern gentlemen very well to all outside appearances”. —Brother Jonathan, June 14, 1856.
The New York Herald wrote on Johnson that summer too,
“The Pittsburg papers are full of the adventures of a young woman who for some years past has figured in that city as a dashing young man…in all her wanderings up to this time, her secret was never suspected, and it is to be regretted she was not able to remain undiscovered and earn an honest living under the protection of male attire.”
19th century newspapers are always operating under a specific societal angle, but in reading between the lines of them I’m glad to see more information on this person’s life and identity, and to see that Johnson was striving to always live in accordance to that identity.
you ever read journals from gay or bi whalers????
Not explicitly, but that’s so often the way of things regarding lgbtq+ history. Are the men whose journals I’ve read who occasionally describe their fellow whalers as fine/good-looking or handsome attracted to them, or simply using complimentary language? Does one man saying he played as another man’s “lady” at a dance during a gam mean anything regarding his identity in relation to other men, or was it simply the language he used to say he danced as the opposite partner in an all-male space? Who knows! Maybe, maybe not. Is a mate goading the men in his boat's crew by saying:
"I love you, my dear fellows, yes, yes, I do; I'll do anything for you, I'll give you my heart's blood to drink"
anything? Dunno! Sure is hot and weird tho!
Scholar Margaret Creighton highlighted one whaler, Elias Trotter, as someone who forged--if not romantic--very close emotional relationships with other men. This included both men he met briefly on gams as well as men aboard his ship.
He described one man, Charles Wheeler, on a gam saying that he ‘drew my attention on account of his manly beauty, activity, and intelligence’, and spent the entire gam speaking with him alone for hours, lamenting at the end the inevitable parting when both ships went on their way. He also developed a close relationship with someone on his ship named Longworth.
Dan W. Everton is a graduate student who spent time researching Trotter, and at a talk highlighted an excerpt of Trotter’s description of Longworth. I found it very poignant and it gives a little bit of insight to one man's perception of another, as well as the specificity of life at sea:
“During the night watches Longworth and myself will paint a pleasing future and will count and cipher out the many days to elapse before we tread our native soil. Will build many castles in the air and then with sober thought will crush them. How truly does sympathy entwine around the heart and produce friendship in its purest, fondest state. How such interchange of thought foments affection? I flatter myself tis even so with us, for, when after these interchanges of thought, of hope, of sympathy I know and feel that the friendship between us grows stronger and more lasting. At sea, there is no formality. Man acts himself and tis here that none has an opportunity of seeing his fellow in all his impurities as well as in all his goodness. I take pride in writing that, in every circumstance and in all duties, Longworth during the last twelve months has shown himself to be one of nature’s noblemen, so kind, so good, so free.”
Since Trotter’s journal hasn’t been digitized I haven’t been able to read it myself since I don't have physical access to the collection it lives in! I'm really hoping that it will be digitized (or fully transcribed) one day though.
The only (very scant) records I’ve seen explicitly regarding same sex activity on whaleships have been non-consensual instances in which there was disciplinary action taken. And that disciplinary action was also in connection with other violence/threats of violence from the man in question that led to his expulsion.
How consensual same sex relations on a whaleship may have been regarded and navigated is a bit of an unknown. But as with any same-sex occupation (especially something as lengthy and isolating as whaling, where one would maybe get liberty ashore every 6ish months) there were undoubtedly going to be same sex acts and partnerships. To say otherwise would be silly, I think. The absence of their mention gives me the sense that it was something people tended to look the other way with (or circumstantially accepted) if parties were consenting, rather than that they just didn’t happen at all. Herman Melville’s ‘oh I love you my fellows’ Moby Dick chapter that’s just an extended mutual masturbation pun has to come from somewhere. And not just from the notion that Melville likely loved men. But uhhh if you want a gay/bi whaler, there’s probably Melville, at the very least.

Ukraine is moving ahead in weapons developments, even while fighting a huge fascist crime syndicate. They will see successes with these water drones, I’m sure. Even if they don’t sink any ships, forcing them to keep far away from Ukrainian shores will make attacks on Ukrainian cities much more difficult, which in itself is a success.

Scrimshaws for use aboard
We often associate scrimshaws with the aesthetic and artistic, i.e. what the sailors made on board from the bones and teeth of a whale or other animal. However, whaling ships (Whalers) were usually on the move longer than any other ships. Several years, in fact. The ships had many things on board, including many spare parts, but even these could break down under bad conditions, and many captains felt that calling at a port for this reason was a waste of time. So the talented men also made their spare parts from bones. Since these were often consumable objects, only a few have survived to this day, in contrast to the art and (everyday) objects for themselfes, the loved ones and customers at home. Here a small collection :
Ship’s block - James Wells, Boston 1845 (x)
A serving board and a seam rubber, 19th century (x)
A fid, c. 1850 (x) A scribing tool, c. 1850 (x)
A handsaw, 19th century (x)
A scrimshawed whale tooth cork pull stippled with a portrait of a gentleman with mustache, bone block, two deadeyes and four clothespins, mid 19th century (x)
